Team Oklahoma got off to a fast start against Team Georgia Blue in the first round of the Junior Greco-Roman Dual Nationals Wednesday morning, building up a massive lead before the wrestling even started.

Jet Taylor, Jacob Butler, and Jaxen Gilmore received forfeits for 126 to 138. Tuttle's Brik Filippo wasted no time in putting points on the board with a 10-0 tech fall over Khyree Alexander, then Sand Springs's Payton Scott took down Dustin Berry 10-0 in thirty seconds flat. Ezequiel Rubio pinned Cole White in a quick twenty then Nick Mahan teched Chandler Miele 13-2.

Bear Hughes continued the winning streak with an 11-0 tech over Devyn Villafane. Zach Marcheselli received a forfeit, Tanner Hawkins picked up a 16-6 tech fall over Richard Walker, then Trenton Lieutance, Alex Fields, and Wyatt Adams all received forfeits.  Alec McDoulett teched Brandon Foster 11-0 and Westmoore's Dalton Duffield wrapped things up with a 12-0 tech of Alex Cain for a final score of 68-2 with no matches lost.

Up next for Oklahoma is Team Pennsylvania who solidly defeated Team Kansas Red 49-12 in round one.

Meet the Sandites: Payton Scott, Kenny Daniel & Zane Basma

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

There's 15 days left till the Charles Page varsity wrestling team kicks off the season with a big win over Owasso. This season Sand Springs took runner-up in the Fast Pitch softball State Championship, and is soon to beat the snot out of Bixby for a State Championship in football. Once the hubbub surrounding the gridiron quiets down, it'll be all eyes on the mat as Sand Springs returns one of the greatest squads in school history.

For the next 15 days, we'll be counting down to the first dual and taking a look at our crowded roster of major talent.

Kenny Daniel

  • Junior
  • Weight: 120

Kenny hasn't done much wrestling this past year, but he's a stud and is expected to be a big contender for the 106 spot left vacant by State placer Cody Randall who is now at NEO.

Payton Scott

  • Sophomore
  • Weight: 160
  • 2011 Southern Plains Greco-Roman Novice Regional Runner-Up
  • 2013 USAOK Middle School Folkstyle Champion
  • 2013 Joe Zamora Junior High Champion
  • 2014 Oklahoma State Cadet Freestyle Champion
  • 2015 OK USAW Cadet Freestyle Champion
  • 2015 Cadet Greco-Roman National Dual Runner-Up (Team Oklahoma)

Scott is as good on the mat as he is on the gridiron, if not better. He didn't get to wrestle much last high school season, but in 2013 went a perfect 25-0 with 14 pins. He's also the 2nd leading running back on the football team with over 800 yards and is an extraordinary all-around athlete. He currently sits at 19-3 in 2015.

Zane Basma

  • Weight: 170
  • Junior
  • 2015 Jerry Billings Tournament Runner-Up
  • 2015 6A State Qualifier

Basma sits a crowded weight where he'll have tough competition to make the varsity dual team each week. However, he's a solid wrestler and won't need to worry too much. He proved himself last season going 27-13 as a sophomore, taking 10th place in the prestigious Kansas City Stampede, and 4th at the 6A East Regional. He's currently sitting at 12-7 for 2015 and will likely finish the year with a solid win record.
