Sand Springs hosts All-State wrestling, West wins both duals

Charles Page High School in Sand Springs hosted the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Duals Wednesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, and the Western squads defeated the East in both Large and Small classifications.

Sand Springs had one senior wrestler receive an All State commendation, but he was unable to compete due to a shoulder injury. Baker University-commit Scott Patton won thirty straight matches his senior year, finishing with a 31-2 record and 2nd Place medal at the State Tournament. Broken Arrow’s Diego Maturino filled in for Patton in the 160 pounds spot.

Overall, western athletes won fifteen matches, the east won nine, and two matches resulted in ties. The Large West squad coached by Duncan’s Bobby Cook won its dual 36-21 over the Eastern unit coached by Durant’s Jim Taylor.

The dual started with a 2-2 tie after a scoreless overtime period between David Boucher and Dominic Derr. Cameron Picklo got a payback win at 138 pounds with a 4-2 decision over State Champion Spencer Schickram, who he was pinned by at the State Tournament. Two-time State Champion Kobi Gomez won a 4-2 overtime decision against three-time State Finalist Gage Hight to tie the dual at 12-12.

The West won seven straight matches and Carson Savage clinched the dual with a fall at 195. The East evened things up a little bit with a decision at 220 and an upset at heavyweight. 6A State Runner-Up Caleb Orr pinned two-time 5A State Champion Josh Heindselman to wrap the night up.

The Small West company coached by Anadarko’s Craig Pruitt rolled to a 30-9 advantage before the East began to battle back. Wagoner coach Micco Charboneau rallied his boys to win their final four matches for a close 30-27 defeat.

The Small West won their first two matches and never trailed in the dual. Thaddeus Long and Logan Farrell battled to a 4-4 tie in a rematch of 4A State Finals. Wesley Scott picked up a fall for the East, then viewers were treated to yet another Finals rematch. Kobe Kizarr repeated his State Championship win with a 3-0 decision against Price Perrier to kick off a five-match win streak.

Alec McDoulett won 11-4 in a battle of State Runners-Up against Abel Perez and 3A State Runner-Up Tyler Lavey knocked off State Champion Luke Ahrberg 6-4. Nathan Ulmer kicked off the Eastern rally attempt by pinning Denver Dahlenburg. Teaguen Wilson had the chance to tie the dual with a pin in the final match, but had to settle for a 4-1 decision.

Prior to the dual, awards were presented to the coaches and wrestlers of the year in each classification.

The remaining Sandites have about an hour long break before the next round begins at the 6A State Championship in Oklahoma City.

Charles Page wrestling qualified eleven for the tournament with seven Regional Champions, more than either Broken Arrow or the Dual State Champions from Choctaw. Unfortunately 220 pound junior and Regional Champion Delvin Jordan was unable to participate dropping the number to nine.

106 freshman Riley Weir (20-12) came in third at Regionals and was pitted against Choctaw's Colt Newton (40-3) in the first round and was pinned in 0:41. From there he was majored 14-4 by Yukon's Braden Fowler and eliminated.

113 Regional Champion Michael Ritchey (22-16) was defeated in round one by Westmoore's Wes Hardin (31-11) by a narrow 5-2 decision but managed to hold the lead in the next match for a 5-3 victory over Spencer Schickram (14-9) of Ponca City.

120 Regional Champion Blake Sargent (36-10) went into overtime with Zackery Bibb (24-5) of Capitol Hill and lost 4-2 in the tie breaker round. He fell in an early hole to Justin Gundlach (29-11) of Moore and trailed 3-2 going into the final period, but rallied for a takedown and pin at 5:14 to stay alive in the consolation bracket.

126 two-time undefeated State Champion Daton Fix (44-0) pinned Bobby Robinson (30-13) of Deer Creek in 1:37.

132 Regional Champion Jack Karstetter (38-7) breezed through his first match with a 17-2 tech fall over Norman's Jeffrey Adams (23-12) in 5:42.

138 Regional Champion Beau Bratcher (40-6) pinned Choctaw's Jeff Speer (23-10) in 4:48.

145 Regional Champion Payton Scott (18-4) pinned Westmoore's Trey Painter (32-10) in 3:52.

The Charles Page high school varsity softball team ended the regular season with a 4-3 extra-inning win over Skiatook Thursday evening at the Sandite Sporting Complex.

Senior Goose Salyers got the win on the mound for the Lady Sandites. Taylor Rogers started for the Lady Bulldogs but was replaced by Linzie Hopkins in the bottom of the third.

Skiatook took the lead early in the second inning. Mikayla Shulanberger and Maci Willingham each hit singles, then stole bases on a catching error by Kali Mallory. Sara Griffin brought home Shulanberger on a sacrifice bunt and Chloe Cooper scored Willingham on a bunt single.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Sand Springs scored a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

Salyers was walked and Jessica Collins hit a single, then the both of them stole bases on an error by Skiatook catcher Morgan Worley. Jessica Schuler was walked to load the bases then Mallory brought home Salyers on a sacrifice fly.

Rachel Blair was next up to the box and hit her second of three doubles for the night to score Collins. Stella Millican was walked next and the bases were loaded once again. That’s when Hopkins was brought in and the inning came to a close with a line drive from Cheatham to Willingham.

Worley, Shulanberger, and Willingham loaded the bases for Skiatook in the fifth inning, but short-stop Kimi Presnell put a stop to the Bulldogs, scooping up a groundball from Guardiola and tagging second base to bring the Sandites in to bat.

Oklahoma State University-commit Sydney Pennington hit a homerun over the left field fence to give the Sandites the 3-2 lead.

The sixth inning went scoreless and it looked like the Sandites would get the win as Worley and Tayler Andersen both got put out on flyballs in the top of the seventh. Then, Shulanberger was walked and stole second while Willingham was at bat. Willingham hit an RBI Triple into the fence and the home team failed to get on base. The game was forced into extra innings.

Salyers struck out Griffin, but Cooper was walked. Mikael Bunn tried to bunt but was put out at first on a pass from Salyers to Schuler. Next up was Taylor Anglen with a line drive into left field. Cooper got caught in a rundown between third base and home plate and was finally tagged out by Pennington.

Finally, in the bottom of the eight, the Sandites found their batting game. Rachel Blair hit a leadoff double into the fence, then Jacie Taber entered the game as a pinch-hitter to hit a double into centerfield. Cameron Clemons was caught out, but Madelyn Blair pinch-hit a double to score her sister and end the game.

Four Sandites had perfect on-base percentages and three had perfect batting averages. Rachel Blair had a game-high seven total bases. Defensively, Schuler led the Sandites with 10 of their 24 putouts and Willingham led the Bulldogs with 6 of their 19 putouts. Both teams allowed a total of 11 base hits.

Skiatook (11-22) still has two games left in the regular season against Bartlesville and Sapulpa. Sand Springs (25-7, 13-1) will be sitting out the Bixby Festival they had originally planned to participate in and will next take on Claremore (13-15) in the first round of Regionals at home on October 8th at noon. They will also host Union and Ponca City.
