Oklahoma routs Iowa 41-29 to remain undefeated after day one

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Oklahoma Outlaws are sitting pretty after day one at the Junior Greco-Roman Dual Nationals. The host team destroyed Georgia in round one 68-2, pushed past a scrappy Pennsylvania team 38-30 in the semis, and handled Iowa with surprising ease in the Pool D finals Wednesday night to advance to the Gold/Silver Pool Thursday morning.

Team Iowa entered the dual as the top seed in the Pool, but that didn't deter an ambitious Oklahoma team. The Outlaws are the defending National Champions in Freestyle, and they're clearly on a warpath to add Greco to the resume this year.

The dual started off with a 14-3 tech fall from Brik Filippo, the State Champ from Tuttle, over Nelson Brands. Iowa rebounded with a 22-9 tech fall by Matt Malcomb over Payton Scott of Sand Springs, but Jaryn Curry got the Outlaws back on track with a huge upset. The State Champion from Choctaw came down hard on No. 9 nationally ranked Fargo All-American Colton Clingenpeel for a 10-0 tech fall.

Brandon Haas returned the favor with an 8-0 upset over State Champ Nick Mahan of Lawton MacArthur, but Oklahoma swept the next three straight matches. State Champ Dan Baker of Sulphur teched Bailey Chyma 18-8, State Champ Bear Hughes of Coweta pinned Isaac Bartel in 1:25, and Tanner Hawkins of Weatherford pinned Caleb Ring in 4:50 for a 23-9 lead.

Iowa broke the streak as No. 11 Carter Isley took out State Runner-Up Gage Johnson of Norman North with an 8-0 decision at heavy weight, but Oklahoma continued to push the lead in the lower weights.

Crescent's Alex Fields picked up a 16-4 tech fall over Cobe Siebrecht and MacArthur's State Champ Wyatt Adams pinned Carter Weeks in 1:53 before Iowa found another win. Drew Bennett pinned Alec McDoulett in 4:35, but Fargo National Champ Dalton Duffield of Westmoore clinched the dual with an 11-0 tech fall over Brenden Baker. Sallisaw State Champ Jett Taylor tacked on the exclamation point with a 0:45 pin of Dante Tacchia to make the score 41-19 and the Okies forfeited the last two weights to finish 41-29.

The Outlaws will return to action Thursday morning against California, Florida, and Minnesota Blue before the placement match. California placed second in Pool C after falling to Michigan Blue in a close 34-33 knockdown drag-out. Florida placed second in Pool B after going down 42-25 to Illinois. Minnesota Blue is the top-seeded favorite and didn't even blink as they bulldozed through the A Pool by a minimum of 38 points per dual.

Oklahoma dominates Georgia 68-2 in Dual Nationals round one

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Team Oklahoma got off to a fast start against Team Georgia Blue in the first round of the Junior Greco-Roman Dual Nationals Wednesday morning, building up a massive lead before the wrestling even started.

Jet Taylor, Jacob Butler, and Jaxen Gilmore received forfeits for 126 to 138. Tuttle's Brik Filippo wasted no time in putting points on the board with a 10-0 tech fall over Khyree Alexander, then Sand Springs's Payton Scott took down Dustin Berry 10-0 in thirty seconds flat. Ezequiel Rubio pinned Cole White in a quick twenty then Nick Mahan teched Chandler Miele 13-2.

Bear Hughes continued the winning streak with an 11-0 tech over Devyn Villafane. Zach Marcheselli received a forfeit, Tanner Hawkins picked up a 16-6 tech fall over Richard Walker, then Trenton Lieutance, Alex Fields, and Wyatt Adams all received forfeits.  Alec McDoulett teched Brandon Foster 11-0 and Westmoore's Dalton Duffield wrapped things up with a 12-0 tech of Alex Cain for a final score of 68-2 with no matches lost.

Up next for Oklahoma is Team Pennsylvania who solidly defeated Team Kansas Red 49-12 in round one.

Blake Sargent, Team Oklahoma place fifth in Greco Roman Nationals

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Charles Page High School junior Blake Sargent has spent the last two days in York, Pennsylvania wrestling with Team Oklahoma at the Cadet Dual Nationals, and he's ran up quite the record. The Greco-Roman tournament came to an end Thursday, and the Freestyle bracket will begin Friday morning.

Sargent finished his sophomore year with a 39-12 record and placed third in the State Championship. Since then, he's won the Team Big Freestyle Tournament and came in Runner-Up in the OKUSA Freestyle State Tournament in Cushing.

Oklahoma was pitted against North Carolina in the first round of pool play and devastated their opponents, giving up only one match for a 73-5 victory, the third-largest win of any team in the tournament. Sargent kicked things off with the first match of the dual and pinned his opponent in the first period. North Carolina Greco State Runner-Up Phifer Ozimek went down in 2:11, setting the tone for the rest of the dual. Team Oklahoma won the next thirteen straight matches with nothing but pins and tech falls.

The next dual wasn't quite as big of a blowout as the first, but it was a clear and dominating victory, nonetheless. The Okies won twelve of seventeen matches over Florida for a final score of 55-25. Sargent put the icing on the cake, pinning Florida Greco State Champion Emauni Smithson in 1:27 for the final match of the dual.

Oklahoma finally met its match in the Pool A finals. Minnesota Storm raced off to a quick advantage with four-straight victories before Oklahoma evened it out with four of their own. The back and forth affair continued right down to the end, but Minnesota got the 39-33 edge. Sargent remained undefeated with a close 12-8 decision over Northern Plains Regional Champion Sebas Swiggum. Minnesota Storm would go on to sweep the entire tournament.

Thursday morning the Oklahoma team began battling in the Gold/Silver Pool against far tougher teams than their earlier opponents. Sargent teched his first opponent, Illinois Greco State Champion Jared Head (not to be confused with the Owasso wrestler of the same name) 11-1, but Illinois won the dual 48-27.

The Okies were in for another defeat in round two as Pennsylvania Blue won nine of seventeen matches for a narrow 44-31 victory. Sargent would lose his first match of the tournament in an 11-1 tech fall to 2015 USAW National Champion Beau Bartlett.

From there Reece Witcraft filled in at the 126 weight for the duration of the tournament. Sargent finished with an overall record of 4-1. Oklahoma rebounded from the pair of tough losses with a 41-35 victory over New Jersey Red and secured the fifth place spot with a 42-33 win over Washington.

The Freestyle Dual Nationals will begin Friday morning against New Jersey Blue. Last week, in the Schoolboy Dual Nationals, Team Oklahoma placed ninth in Greco and improved to seventh in Freestyle. Sand Springs's Carter Young went undefeated in both styles at that tournament and achieved All-American status.

CPHS junior Blake Sargent goes undefeated in Greco-Roman Nationals Day One

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Last week the Schoolboy (ages 13-14) National Duals came to a close with Team Oklahoma placing ninth in Greco-Roman and seventh in Freestyle with four undefeated All Americans, including Clyde Boyd Middle School's Carter Young. The young Sandite was one of only sixteen wrestlers in the country to make the All-Tournament team in both styles.

Wednesday began the Cadet (ages 15-16) National Duals in York, Pennsylvania, and once again Sand Springs is representing well on Team Oklahoma. Charles Page High School junior Blake Sargent is currently undefeated after day one in Greco Roman and the team placed second in their pool.

Sargent finished his sophomore year with a 39-12 record and placed third in the State Championship. Since then, he's won the Team Big Freestyle Tournament and came in Runner-Up in the OKUSA Freestyle State Tournament in Cushing.

Oklahoma was pitted against North Carolina in the first round of pool play and devastated their opponents, giving up only one match for a 73-5 victory, the second-largest win of any team in the tournament.

Oklahoma finally met its match in the pool finals. Minnesota Storm raised off to a quick advantage with four-straight victories before Oklahoma evened it out with four of their own. The back and forth affair continued right down to the end, but Minnesota got the 39-33 edge. Sargent remained undefeated with a close 12-8 decision over Northern Plains Regional Champion Sebas Swiggum.

Team Oklahoma will return to action Thursday morning in the Gold Pool against a tough team from Illinois who breezed through their first pool with dominating victories over Kansas Red, Pennsylvania Red, and Missouri Red. From there the Okies will battle Pennsylvania Blue, and New Jersey Red before the placement matches.

Sand Springs Wrestling Team qualifies four for Nationals

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School wrestling team was well represented at the OK USA National Team Qualifier at Union this weekend, and four wrestlers qualified for Nationals this summer in Fargo, North Dakota.

Junior three-time undefeated OSSAA State Champion Daton Fix wrestled at 126 pounds in Junior Freestyle and had no problem breezing through his opponents, teching Omar Pollard and Jet Taylor 10-0 each, and receiving a forfeit from Karson Bellmard for first place.

Junior Jack Karstetter, a 2016 State Runner-Up, wrestled at 132 pounds and placed second in Junior Freestyle with a 3-1 record. He defeated Gage Gomez by 10-0 tech fall, then narrowly edged out Westmoore's Dalton Duffield in an 11-11 tie breaker. Duffield went 41-4 this past high school season and came in runner-up to Fix at the State Championships. Karstetter picked up another tech fall with an 18-8 win over Billy Simpson in the semifinals. The final round pitted Karstetter against Garrett Rowe of Choctaw. Rowe went 40-5 last season and secured his second-consecutive State Championship. Karstetter battled hard but lost by 12-8 decision.

The remaining Sandites have about an hour long break before the next round begins at the 6A State Championship in Oklahoma City.

Charles Page wrestling qualified eleven for the tournament with seven Regional Champions, more than either Broken Arrow or the Dual State Champions from Choctaw. Unfortunately 220 pound junior and Regional Champion Delvin Jordan was unable to participate dropping the number to nine.

106 freshman Riley Weir (20-12) came in third at Regionals and was pitted against Choctaw's Colt Newton (40-3) in the first round and was pinned in 0:41. From there he was majored 14-4 by Yukon's Braden Fowler and eliminated.

113 Regional Champion Michael Ritchey (22-16) was defeated in round one by Westmoore's Wes Hardin (31-11) by a narrow 5-2 decision but managed to hold the lead in the next match for a 5-3 victory over Spencer Schickram (14-9) of Ponca City.

120 Regional Champion Blake Sargent (36-10) went into overtime with Zackery Bibb (24-5) of Capitol Hill and lost 4-2 in the tie breaker round. He fell in an early hole to Justin Gundlach (29-11) of Moore and trailed 3-2 going into the final period, but rallied for a takedown and pin at 5:14 to stay alive in the consolation bracket.

126 two-time undefeated State Champion Daton Fix (44-0) pinned Bobby Robinson (30-13) of Deer Creek in 1:37.

132 Regional Champion Jack Karstetter (38-7) breezed through his first match with a 17-2 tech fall over Norman's Jeffrey Adams (23-12) in 5:42.

145 Regional Champion Payton Scott (18-4) pinned Westmoore's Trey Painter (32-10) in 3:52.

160 Regional Runner-Up Zane Basma (32-11) scored an 8-3 decision over Sam Hensley (31-13) of Edmond Memorial.

170 Trace Fleischman (10-4) placed fourth at Regionals but rebounded big time at State with a 3-1 upset of West Regional Champion Jacob Schimmels (23-6) of Edmond.

The top three teams are as close now as they have been all season with Broken Arrow at 25.5, Choctaw at 25, and Sand Springs at 23.5.

The semi finals will begin at 7:15.

Zane Basma takes first place at Bobby Lyons Invitational

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Despite sitting out several key starters, the Charles Page High School wrestling squad was still more than capable of finishing third at their home tournament behind the #1 teams in 6A and 5A. After upsetting the #1 Broken Arrow Tigers Thursday night, the most important thing for the Sandites to do now is remain healthy for Regionals, State, and Dual State. #8 Riley Weir, John Jiminez, #2 Trace Fleischman, #7 Lane Lettich, and Delvin Jordan all set out the tournament to rest and recover, and several backups got to see their first varsity action of the season.

(Part Five of Five...)

160 #4 Zane Basma (17-9) won his first tournament of the season, pinning Seth Steinke (Cascia Hall) in 3:01 and Alec Puckett (Bixby) in 2:29. Gabe Evans of Broken Arrow got a rematch after being pinned in Thursday night's dual, and fared slightly better this time, but was defeated 6-0 to seal Basma's trip to the finals against Tony Connor of Collinsville. Basma won that match 11-5.

At 170 Bryton Beck (5-11) gave up pins of 3:46 and 2:16 to Brad Bell (Okmulgee) and Stephen Shibley (Sapulpa), respectively.

182 Mike Brown (0-2) was pinned in 1:30 by #2 Jared Kerr of Bixby and lost 14-5 to Chris Connor, also of Bixby. Mike Martinez (0-2) also made his varsity debut at 182, but was pinned in 0:41 by Zach Wellman of Bartlesville, and in 1:54 by Paul Fleming of Cascia Hall.

At 195 #8 Zack Sims (14-15) gave up a 1:55 pin to 5A State Runner-Up Roc Robbins of Collinsville in the opening round, then accepted a forfeit from Broken Arrow's Skylar Haynes. Sims wrapped up the Friday wrestling with a 1:48 pin of Cascia Hall's Hunter Hedrick. On Saturday, Sims lost 7-2 to #4 Cody Adams of Bixby, but managed to edge out Ponca City's #6 Bradyn Presnall 4-3 for a 5th Place finish.

220 Gage Fain (5-14) was pinned in 2:26 in the opening round by Alex Cantu of Grapevine, Texas, but turned it around with two pins of his own in 2:29 against Blake Buoy (Bartlesville) and 0:59 against Dylan Dobbs of Collinsville. From there, however, Fain would be pinned in 3:46 by Baylee Perigo of Barnsdall and forced to a rematch against Cantu. This time he avoided the pin, but gave up a 7-3 decision for a 6th Place finish.

The Sandites wrestled two new guys at Heavyweight, Jace Anderson (0-2) and Dom Piper (0-2). Anderson forfeited to Sapulpa's #5 Daylan Durham, then was pinned in 0:11 by Derek Bay of Sperry. Piper was pinned in 2:25 by #1 Trenton Lieurance and in 4:52 by Jackson Wilson of Collinsville.

Beau Bratcher places first at Bobby Lyons Invitational

(Part Four of Five...)

#2 Beau Bratcher (26-4) was the victor of 138, pinning Cascia Hall's Miles Waller in 2:37 and Ponca City's Nenebah Biggoose in 1:05. Broken Arrow's Blake Mattioda gave Bratcher the closest run for his money, only giving up a 4-1 decision, but Bratcher prevailed against both him and #4 Brody Perciful (Ponca City) in the finals with a 5-0 decision for his first championship of the season.

Gavin Garcia (0-2) made his varsity debut wrestling unattached at 145, but had to take on #8 Gabe Evans, a state qualifier from Union in the first round and was teched 16-1 in 4:58. The next battle was much closer, but Jimi Cerre of Ponca got the 5-0 decision for the win.

145 #10 Cody Mathis (8-7) had one of the highest-scoring matches of the night, running up a 17-14 decision over Barnsdall's Colten Allen, then pinned Cerre in 4:53. In the next round, however, he was defeated 5-0 by 5A State Runner-Up Justin Walker of Collinsville and bumped to the consolation bracket. Saturday morning Mathis had to take on Evans and was overcame 9-2, but he rebounded with a narrow 3-2 victory over Jacob Waits (Sperry) for a 5th Place finish.

At 152 #2 Payton Scott (11-3) defeated Wesley Yarber (Barnsdall) 9-3 and pinned James Ott of Grapevine, TX in 1:31. Union's #5 Christian Mayhue battled valiantly before falling 5-3 to land Scott a spot in the finals against Elijah Tanner of Collinsville. Unfortunately, Scott aggravated an injury and forfeited his last match to settle for second place. Earlier this season Scott defeated Tanner 7-6 and Tanner defeated Scott 3-1 at Geary.

Sandite Wrestling dominates Broken Arrow to earn #1 rank in Oklahoma

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

It was a battle of the undefeateds Thursday night at Ed Dubie Fieldhouse as the #2 Charles Page Sandites challenged the defending state champions, the #1 Broken Arrow Tigers. Both teams went into the dual 4-0 for the season.

The Sandites started off at 126 with #3 Jack Karstetter (17-6) scoring a 14-4 major decision over Brady Mattioda for a 4-0  team lead. Karstetter had multiple takedowns and a near fall, but was unable to get the pin.

At 132 Derek Davis (5-2) got off to a great start against #10 Dylan Wingo, scoring a 2-pt takedown in the first minute. Davis expanded that lead to 4-0 by the end of the first period, and rode for nearly the entire match, but was unable to score again and ended with a 4-0 decision for a 7-0 team lead.

Next up was the #1 wrestler in the state, #3 in the nation, the undefeated 2X State Champion Daton Fix (22-0) against (145 #5) Blake Mattioda. Fix exploded on to the mat with a somersault and flip to great crowd applause. In typical fashion it was cat and mouse as Fix outscored his opponent 10-4 in the first period and the only points Mattioda scored were escape points that Fix handed him. Ultimately Fix ended with a win by technical fall for a 12-0 lead.

At 145 both Beau Bratcher (22-4) and Caleb Wise wrestled up from their usual 138. Bratcher is currently ranked #3 in 138, Wise is ranked #4, and the two had met twice already this week. Bratcher defeated Wise 6-5 at the start of the Geary Invitational, then beat him 2-1 later on in the tournament. Bratcher wrestled his way up through the consolation bracket at Geary for a second place finish and is currently Sandite of the Week. This time Bratcher would edge Wise out even more for a 3-0 finish and a 15-0 Sandite lead.

152 #3 Payton Scott (8-2) immediately made a statement with a takedown of #4 Blake Warren barely 8 seconds into the match. Warren got the escape point, however, and Scott gave him another escape to start the second period. The two were tied throughout the entire second period, but Scott scored a 2pt reversal early in the third for the 4-2 lead. With 9 seconds left Scott slammed Warren and looked like he would get a pin, but ultimately only got a 6-3 decision for an 18-0 Sandite lead.

For the third time this dual, it was the #3 wrestler in 160 versus the #4. Zane Basma (13-9), the underdog, scored a 2:32 upset pin over Brady Jones for the 24-0 lead

At 170, Gavin Potter scored the first win of the night for the Tigers over Bryton Beck (5-9). The Sandite Senior was filling in for Trace Fleischman (3-2) who is nursing an ankle injury, and battled valiantly before giving up an 11-2 major decision.

At 182 it was #6 Lane Lettich (4-3) against #1 Isaiah Page and the two had a perfect repeat of their 170 pound match at last year's dual. The Geary Champion from Broken Arrow beat Lettich 7-2 for the second year in a row, but the Sandites still led 24-7.

195 #10 Zack Sims (11-13) had a David vs Goliath matchup against #1 State Runner-Up Skylar Haynes but managed to avoid bonus points, going down 13-6 and holding the team lead 24-10.

At 220 came standout linebacker Delvin Jordan, Jr. (5-2) against #9 Gage Kaiser. The Sandite scored first on a second period escape, and nearly got a takedown in the third but Kaiser battled it out for a match-tying escape. Jordan was outstanding, clearly wrestling through some major pain from a still-recovering leg injury. The match went into overtime and Jordan narrowly worked his way through a near-takedown and reversed it for the 3-1 sudden victory decision and a 27-10 lead.

The Sandites are lacking in the heavyweight department, and Gage Fain (3-11) has been having to wrestle up against much larger opponents such as #3 Trenton Lieurance who had more than 50 pounds on Fain and won by pin in 3:27 to keep the Tigers' hopes alive.

Circling back to the light weights, it was 106 #8 freshman Riley Weir (14-8) wrestling against junior state-placer Tyler Lawley who is ranked #5 in 113. Weir is nursing a majorly strained ligament in his arm and overcame a near fall for a pin in an inspiring match against Union Tuesday night. Weir wasn't able to pull off the win, but he battled it out to a 7-1 decision, preventing bonus points as the Sandites led 27-19.

All 113 #6 Michael Ritchey (9-9) had to do was win by simple decision to cinch the dual for the Sandites, but he made it clear he was looking for the pin, and nearly got it at the end of the first. Instead, the Junior had to settle for near-fall points and a 5-0 lead. Ultimately Ritchey would settle for the 7-0 shutout decision over Blake Gonzalez, but he had all the riding time and wrapped up the upset win for the Sandites.

The last match was merely a formality as Sand Springs already had an 11-point lead with only 6 points left, but 120 #9 Blake Sargent (17-7) went above and beyond in his battle against the #5 wrestler in 126. TaJuan Daniels is an incredible athlete, but Sargent worked it over on him for most of the regular match. Daniels wouldn't go down without a fight, however, and escaped with 10 seconds left to tie things up 2-2 and force overtime. Sargent got the 2-pt sudden victory takedown and the Sandites ended things with a 33-19 victory to unofficially claim the #1 rank in the state.

Broken Arrow won the Junior High dual 36-26. The Sandites will next see action tomorrow at the Bobby Lyons Invitational Tournament at Ed Dubie Field House.
