Boys Win Glenpool Classic, Ambrielle Chambers is Sandites' First-Ever Girls JH State Champ

The Charles Page High School boys’ wrestling team brought home its third team title of the season from the Glenpool Warrior Classic on Friday, defending their prior year’s crown with five individual champions.

The team title was decided by half a point and came down to the heavyweight placement round where Mason Harris took first place while Broken Arrow’s Kahlen Thompson settled for third.

No. 4 Broken Arrow settled for second place, followed by Owasso in a distant third place.

Harris (30-2) earned a 9-3 decision over Christian Heritage’s Chase Graham for his 15th win in a row and second consecutive tournament title, making his way to the finals with three consecutive pins.

Also winning titles were Dawsen Briscoe, Kase Skaggs, Zander Grigsby, and Jaxon Trotter.

Briscoe (20-11) earned his first gold medal of the season after pinning all four of his foes at 106 pounds. In the finals he trailed 2-0 after giving up a first-period takedown to Owasso’s Chace Hill, but he started the second period on top and worked the Ram over for a fall in 2:57.

Skaggs (32-7) followed it up with a win at 113. The junior lightweight has now won nine matches and two tournaments in a row, also taking home gold at the Nathan Hale tournament two weeks ago.

Skaggs earned one technical fall and one pin in pool play before eking out a pair of decisions in the championship bracket. In the finals he took Sapulpa senior State-placer Cavin Peper to overtime, scoring a pair of third-period takedowns after trailing 3-0. He added a third takedown for the 6-4 sudden victory win.

Zander Grigsby (34-1) picked up his fourth tournament title of the season and has now won 12 matches in a row since his only loss of the year. Grigsby pinned his first three opponents in the first period at 165 pounds. In the finals he won a 10-2 major decision against Jenks junior Josh Henderson.

Trotter (33-7) won his second title in a row after winning the Skiatook tournament last month. He pinned his first three opponents at 175 before dominating the last two by way of technical superiority. In the semifinals he won 16-1 in only 2:48 and in the finals he defeated Glenpool senior Mason Buzbee 17-2 in 3:27.

David Ritchey (16-7) took third place at 120, only losing an 8-5 semifinal decision to Owasso senior State-placer Bryson Humphries. In the placement round he pinned Glenpool’s Jayden Worledo in 1:04.

Jayden Pait (14-2) placed third at 138, pinning his first three opponents before falling 15-3 to Broken Arrow State Champion Jake Miller in the semifinals. In the consolation finals he pinned Sapulpa State qualifier Ethan Peterson in 1:42.

Peyton Callis (32-10) placed third at 190, pinning two opponents before losing 4-2 to Jenks State qualifier Owen Jones in the semifinals. In the placement match he won a 16-0 technical fall against Broken Arrow senior Braden Jones in 3:26.

Jesse Moore placed fifth at 144, Preston Reyna placed fifth at 150, Hunter Spencer placed sixth at 126, Colt Hood placed seventh at 126, Brody Ensten placed seventh at 157, Gage Gunn placed eighth at 132, and Isaac Sensintaffar placed ninth at 157.

The Sandites (10-1) will return to action Friday at noon against No. 4 Stillwater (13-2) in the first round of Dual State at the Stride Bank Center in Enid. The winner of that dual will face the winner of No. 1 Edmond North (15-1) vs. No. 8 Edmond Deer Creek (12-7) at 2:00 p.m. The Championship finals will be at 6:30 p.m.

Junior High

The boys took seventh place and the girls took fourth place at the Junior High All-State tournament, led by freshman Ambrielle Chambers as the Sandites’ first-ever girls State Champion.

The junior high State tournament is arguable tougher than the high school tournament because there are no divisions based on school size.

Chambers pinned her first five opponents in the first period while outscoring them 15-1. In the 108-pound finals she won a 9-5 decision over Union’s Lydia Suniga with a takedown, two reversals, and three nearfall points.

Kenzie Johnson was runner-up at 87 pounds, pinning each of her first three opponents in the first period before falling to Lawton Eisenhower’s Emalyn Johnston-Stewart in the finals. She actually led 4-0 early in the match before giving up a takedown in the second.

Bailey Copeland was runner-up at 94 pounds, pinning her first three opponents before falling to Edmond North’s Alexandria Skidmore in the finals.

Kasen McAffrey was runner-up at 138 pounds, only dropping a close 1-0 decision to Ft. Gibson’s Brendan Bell. He started the tournament with a major decision, three falls, and a technical fall, outscoring his opponents 35-2 without giving up a single takedown.

Griffin Sensintaffar was runner-up at 87 pounds, losing a 6-5 decision to Hobart’s Jett Kline in the finals. He pinned his first four opponents and added an 11-0 major decision in the semifinals.

Ryder Richardson placed sixth at 76 pounds in the 6th and 7th-grade division and Jaxon Grigsby placed sixth at 128 in junior high.

Wrestling Roundup: Junior High Lady Sandites Place 2nd at Home Tourney, Keystone Kids 2nd at State

Chanute, Kansas edged out No. 5 Westmoore 211.5 to 207 to win the second annual Sand Springs girls high school wrestling tournament Saturday at Clyde Boyd Middle School.

The defending champions, Springdale Har-Ber, slipped to 17th this year while host No. 10 Sand Springs placed 21st in the field of 42 teams.

In junior high action the Sandites finished runner-up to Norman by a margin of 228 to 214.5 after calling down a pair of varsity freshmen. Defending junior high champion Perry tied for third place with Bixby at 173 points. 37 schools participated in the junior high tournament.

Sand Springs went 3-1 in the finals while Norman was 1-2, but the Tigers had the edge in consolation with seven top-five placers to the Sandites’ five.

High School Girls

Kelsi Hilton led the varsity team with a fourth place finish at 140 pounds, with both of her losses coming to Har-Ber’s Kinalisa Lokot. Hilton previously pinned Lokot for first place at the Diamond State Invitational in December, but the junior State placer got the upper hand this time with a pair of second period falls.

Laila Mirza went 5-2 at 115 for fifth place, with all of her wins coming via fall. Trinity Owens placed eighth at 110, Audree Robinson placed 10th at 125, and Emily Ambriz placed 10th at 235.

Junior High Girls

Kenzie Johnson won at 89 pounds with two falls and an 8-7 semifinal decision. In the finals she pinned Ponca’s Bailey Ward in 4:10.

Bailey Copeland won at 96 pounds, pinning her first four opponents before dominating Cleveland’s Hannah Stephenson 8-0 in the finals.

Ambrielle Chambers won at 102 pounds, pinning all five of her foes. In the finals she stuck Norman’s Rylie Hillis in 2:41.

Copeland and Chambers, both freshmen, usually wrestle with the varsity team.

Rylee Allen was runner-up at 117, pinning her first four opponents before getting pinned by Norman’s Claire Lancaster in the finals.

Kyla Crittenden placed third at 73, Faith Humble placed sixth at 117, Collby Garrison placed seventh at 145, Lyla Waldren placed eighth at 102, Cailey Miller placed eighth at 155, Brylee Smith placed ninth at 145, Audrey Pride placed ninth at 117, Rowen Hull placed tenth at 138, Savannah Taylor placed 11th at 110, and Sawyer Briscoe placed 12th at 102.

Junior High Boys

The junior high boys competed at the 82nd annual Ted Anderson tournament in Edmond and took fifth place with two champions.

Griffin Sensintaffar won at 86 pounds for his fourth title of the season. He pinned his first three opponents before closing out with a pair of decisions. In the finals he wont 3-0 against Broken Arrow’s Bryson McQueen in a rematch of last week’s semifinals. Sensintaffar pinned McQueen last weekend en route to a tournament title at Perry.

Freshman Jaxon Grigsby won at 126 pounds with two pins and two decisions before taking down Edmond North’s Brooks McCollom in the finals. Grigsby scored a takedown with 15 seconds left to tie it at 3-3. He scored a takedown in overtime but McCollom had a pair of escapes to tie it at 5-5 before Grigsby scored a reversal in the third overtime period for the 7-5 win.

Kasen McAffrey placed third at 140, Kaden Pope placed fifth at 132, Rowdy Ash placed sixth at 80 pounds, Corbin Wooley placed sixth at 155, and Hunter Fields placed sixth at 170.

Youth Wrestling

The Keystone Kids Wrestling Club competed at the OKUSA State Championship and took first place in Division I and Division II and second place overall. Head coach Kyle Waag was named the OKUSA Coach of the Year for the east side of the state.

Madden Moore, Jett Galloway, and Raylee Dawes won gold in Division I and Holden Yingst was runner-up.

Patrick Sanchez and Hagan Wolfenberger won gold in Division II, Hudson Waag was runner-up, and Maddix Spencer placed fourth.

In Division III Ty Galloway and Autumn Foust placed third and Sutton Hawley placed fourth.

Maddox Pope won gold In Division IV while Karson Waag and Bryson Pope were runners-up. Wes Wilson and Zander Pope placed fourth.

Kayden Worthington won gold in Division V.

In the Novice divisions: Landon Replogle and Carter Randall won gold; Gage Fadenrecht and Maverick Spencer placed third; and Hunter Sims, Brayden Replogle, Nakona Eaglin, and Joseph Satoe placed fourth.

Lady Sandites Place Second at Strother, Kiya Dover Wins Gold

The Charles Page High School girls powerlifting team came up 28 points shy of defending its title at the Strother Invitational on January 19th, but a finished a strong second place behind Kiya Dover’s gold medal.

Dover won despite being quite undersized for her weight class, with top marks in all three events. The heavyweight benched 145 pounds and deadlifted 325 for close victories, but blew out the competition with a 315-pound squat that was 65 pounds heavier than the runner-up’s mark.

Gracey Massey placed third overall at 198. She was third in squat at 255 pounds, fifth in bench at 125 pounds, and second in deadlift at 285.

Bailey Doughty was third overall at 220 but won two of her events. Doughty had the top bench at 120 pounds and the top deadlift at 295, while squatting 210 for fourth.

Paisley Brown placed fourth at 123, squatting 155 pounds and benching 80 for second place in each division and deadlifting 145 for ninth.

Kelsi Hilton was fourth at 157 with a 200-pound squat for fifth and a 115-pound bench for third. Her 265-pound deadlift was sixth.

Hannah George placed fifth at 168 with the best bench of her division at 120 pounds. She was also fifth in deadlift at 240 pounds and sixth in squat at 200.

Kadence Grant placed eighth at 168 with a 205-pound squat for fourth, a 95-pound bench, and a 205-pound deadlift. Tessa Urrey was ninth at 168 with a 170 squat, 105 bench, and 220 deadlift.

Jocelyn Wright placed sixth at 145 with a 190 squat, 95 bench, and 230 deadlift. Laila Mirza was ninth in the same class with the same squat and bench, but deadlifted 215.

Preslie Graham was sixth at 198 with a fifth-place 210-pound squat, a 105-pound bench, and a 230-pound deadlift. Amaia Harp was seventh with a 160 squat, a 95-pound bench, and a 220 deadlift.

Callie Brown placed ninth at 220 with a 115-pound squat, 75-pound bench, and 205-pound deadlift. Brooklyn Buckaloo placed tenth at 132, squatting 175, benching 100, and deadlifting 190.

The junior high team won the Strother meet for the second consecutive year, led by Marlee Dixon in first place at 181 pounds.

Dixon had the top bench at 105 pounds, the top deadlift at 215, and was second in squat at 195.

Kayleigh Felsinger was third at heavyweight with fourth-place finishes in squat and deadlift. She squatted 180, benched 90, and deadlifted 225.

Adelynn Ray finished sixth at 168 but had the top mark in deadlift at 250 pounds. She squatted 135 and was fifth in bench at 95.

The junior high also compete at the Little Axe Invitational on Wednesday and placed third.

Cheyenne Meritt placed second and Ambrielle Chambers was third at 108 pounds. Meritt squatted 105, benched 65, and deadlifted 140 for second, fifth, and second, respectively. Chambers squatted 100, benched 80, and deadlifted 125 for third, first, and third.

Dixon was second at 181, squatting 200 for second, benching 115 for first, and deadlifting 225 for third.

Taliah Rushing placed third at heavyweight with a 175-pound squat, a 100-pound bench for fifth, and a 300-pound deadlift for third.

Ray placed fourth at 165, squatting 145 for fourth, benching 90 for third, and deadlifting 260 for first.

The Lady Sandites will return to action in a few weeks at the McAlester event on February 16th.

Laila Mirza Crowned Homecoming Queen, Lady Sandites split with Ponca City & Westmoore

For the first time in Sandite history, the wrestling Homecoming queen was an actual wrestler. Laila Mirza was crowned in between a pair of victories as the Sandites hosted Westmoore and Ponca City on Thursday.

No. 9 ranked Sand Springs (4-2) won 42-36 against No. 13 Ponca City (0-4) before falling 54-30 to No. 6 Westmoore (3-0).

“We’ve been trying to take one dual at a time and handle Ponca City first, but we knew Westmoore was going to be tough,” said head girls coach Trent Cleveland.

“They battled us tough and ended up getting the better of us. We did have a couple of girls out of the lineup tonight. That probably played a factor but it is what it is, just got to roll with the punches.”

Sand Springs never trailed against the Wildcats, though the visitors tied things up twice and held close till the end.

Bailey Copeland took an 8-2 lead on Camila Bohon before pinning her at the 5:17 mark. Caryss Upton received a forfeit at 105 to take a 12-0 lead.

Ponca City tied things up with pins from Marli Arbona against Ambrielle Chambers and Toutie Bales against Trinity Owens.

Mirza responded by pinning Oakly Hunt and Gracie Gifford pinned Kaylie Thomas to make it 24-12, but Porscha Kreger pinned Audree Robinson and State placer Adisyn Ivers pinned Mia Bruns at 135 to tie it once again.

Kelsi Hilton gave her team its final lead by pinning Caitlin Cooper in 3:38, then Kayla Arnold and Tessa Urrey received forfeits to clinch the dual.

Fiona Schalk pinned Kadence Grant at 170 and the Wildcats received a forfeit at 190, but neither team had a heavyweight, resulting in a double forfeit.

In the second dual the Sandites never led but clawed back from a 24-0 deficit to keep things close before the Jaguars ran away with the final three weight classes.

Returning State qualifiers Kyrain and Krystan Perez pinned Copeland and Chambers, the Sandites forfeited 110, and Michaela Pinley pinned Owens to start the dual.

Mirza snapped the Jaguars’ streak by pinning Paula Galindo in just 42 seconds, then Gifford and Robinson received forfeits. The teams traded pins from there.

Zusette Arellano pinned Bruns at 135, Hilton pinned Ashlyn Hyde in 2:49, Izzy Galindo pinned Arnold, Urrey pinned Kaysie Gallope in 4:48, and Pearl Galindo pinned Grant to make it 42-30. Sand Springs forfeited 190 and 235.

Sand Springs came into the night with momentum, ranked the highest in school history after winning the Diamond State Invitational last weekend.

“We’re definitely coming off a high, going a state over and representing Oklahoma wrestling,” said Cleveland.

“It’s all kind of coming together at the right time. I couldn’t be luckier to have such a great coaching staff, support group, and wrestlers. The girls are really just coming out of the hallways just to try it out. We’ve officially got a full lineup.”

“It’s the first team title. There’s a lot of firsts going on this year and so now we’re really searching for that first State qualifier and that first State placer.”

Sand Springs also competed at the Supergirl 64 tournament at Union High School over the weekend, taking 15th place out of 46 schools.

Hilton took second place at 140 pounds, winning her pool with three pins. In the gold bracket she won two more pins, beating Bixby State qualifier Jay’la Ford in the semifinals before dropping a 5-1 decision to Yukon State qualifier Trysten Rittberger.

She was the only Lady Sandite to place in the loaded tournament.

“We try to give our girls a tough schedule so Regionals is not a shock when they go in there,” said Cleveland.

Lady Sandites Win Diamond State Invitational Over Top Arkansas Teams

Charles Page High School has laid claim to its first ever tournament title in girls’ wrestling, winning the Diamond State Lady Invitational with four champions Saturday afternoon in Springdale, Arkansas.

Bailey Copeland, Ambrielle Chambers, Laila Mirza, and Kelsi Hilton all took top honors at the event while Tessa Urrey was runner-up and every Lady Sandite placed top-five.

Sand Springs earned 192 team points for a three-point advantage over Sylvan Hills, last year’s Arkansas 5A State Runners-Up. Placing third was defending Arkansas 6A State Champion Springdale Har-Ber with 147 points.

Copeland won the 100-pound bracket handily, pinning all four of her opponents while outscoring them 18-1. In the second round she took an 8-0 lead against Sylvan Hills State Runner-Up Emele Siegfried before pinning her in 3:36. Her other three opponents didn’t make it out of the first period.

Chambers won the gold at 105 pounds, also pinning all four of her foes while outscoring them 20-5. In the first round she pinned State Champion Farrah Crossno of Greenwood in 1:21.

Mirza won at 120 pounds with three pins, outscoring her opponents 21-0. All three of her pins came in under a minute and in the second round she won a 5-0 decision against Sylvan Hills State Runner-Up Chelsea Harmon.

Hilton won at 140 pounds, pinning all four of her foes, including Arkansas State qualifiers Kinalisa Lokot and Alyssa Beasley. She outscored her opponents 18-3, only surrendering escape points.

Urrey was runner-up at 155 pounds with a 6-2 record, with all six of her wins coming via fall. She had two wins over returning State qualifiers. In round eight she took a 7-0 lead on Har-Ber State Runner-Up Serena Valentine before pinning her in the second period, and in the final match she pinned Fayetteville’s Meya Flowers.

Mia Bruns placed third at 130, Kayla Arnold placed third at 145, Emily Ambriz placed third at 235, Zoe Butler placed fourth at 135, Gracie Gifford placed fourth at 125, Caryss Upton placed fifth at 110, Trinity Owens placed fifth at 115, and Kadence Grant placed fifth at 170.

The Lady Sandites (4-1) will return to action Thursday with duals against Westmoore (1-0) and Ponca City (0-2).

Lady Sandites Defeat Jenks on Senior Night, Place Second at Cleveland Tournament

The Charles Page High School girls wrestling team (4-1) rolled to a 54-24 victory against Jenks (0-1) Tuesday on Senior Night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The two teams split 4-4 in matches that were actually wrestled, but the Sandites had the deeper roster and picked up five forfeits.

“The fact that we finally have a full girls dual lineup here at Sand Springs, it’s just been thanks to all these coaches helping to get these girls out,” said head girls assistant coach Trent Cleveland, who left the head coach position at Glenpool to lead the Lady Sandites this year.

“We’ve still got girls that are taking interest in it. This is year two, we started with four girls last year and the girls are just taking off with it.”

Bailey Copeland, Ambrielle Chambers, and Caryss Upton all received forfeits to start the dual 18-0 and the home team never trailed.

Addi Thompson pinned Trinity Owens at 115 to get the Trojans on the board and the teams double forfeited 120.

Gracie Gifford easily handled Brook Albyn at 125, taking an 8-3 lead into the the third period before pinning her in 5:14, then Zoe Butler and Audree Robinson received forfeits.

Kelsi Hilton clinched the dual at 140, taking a 9-1 lead against Mazzy Conley in the second period, reversing for a pin at 3:52 to go up 42-6.

Maddi Wilke pinned Kayla Arnold at 145 but Tessa Urrey responded with a pin of Nevaeh Maldonado with 13 seconds left in the match.

Jenks’s Mariah Jones pinned Kadence Grant at 170 and Elaine Kenny received an injury forfeit from Addily Shotwell in the first period, but Emily Ambriz capped the dual off by pinning Nylah Blackwell in 1:06 at heavyweight.

The victory is the latest sign that the girls wrestling program at Sand Springs is the real deal as the girls have put together a remarkable record in their first-ever dual season.

“We’ll be seeing these girls later down the road at Regionals,” said Cleveland. “Picking up a win over Sapulpa and now Jenks, we’re definitely making headway in 6A and trying to make some noise.”

The girls also took second place out of 30 teams at the Joe Cole Classic in Cleveland this past weekend, finishing only 13 points behind champion Bentonville West.

Hilton took first place at 140 pounds while Chambers, Laila Mirza, and Urrey finished as runners-up.

Hilton (16-2) pinned Bristow’s Abigail Jones in 1:17, Cleveland’s Zoe Zucca in 3:36, and Bentonville’s Samantha Graciano in 1:19.

Chambers (8-3) pinned her first two opponents at 105 before falling to Warner’s Rachel Torres in the finals.

Mirza (15-4) recorded two first-period falls at 120 and a 6-0 decision over Mannford’s Roseline Baker before falling to Bristow State qualifier Zoey Freeman in the finals.

Urrey (7-8) pinned her first two foes at 155 before falling to Henrietta’s Lily Haywood in the finals.

Shotwell placed fourth at 190 and Grant was fifth at 170.

Next up for the Lady Sandites will be a trip to Springdale, Arkansas for the Diamond State Lady Invitational on December 29th.
