Sandite Alumni Report: Aden Baughman Wins Washburn Open

The Pittsburg State University track team competed at the Washburn Open Friday and Saturday, and 2019 Charles Page High School alum Aden Baughman took first place in the 600-yard run.

The junior former State Champion finished the race in 1:11.863, just 0.005 seconds ahead of the runner-up. He also ran the 800-meter run in 1:59.24 for 33rd place.

Pitt State will return to action next weekend when it hosts the 9th annual Indoor Gorilla Classic.

2022 alum Layne Kirkendoll is in her sophomore year at South Dakota State. She took fifth place in high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 3 inches at the Bison Open in Fargo, North Dakota on Saturday.

SDSU will host its own indoor meet next weekend.

Sandite Alumni Report: Track, Wrestling, Volleyball & More

Oklahoma State University super-senior Daton Fix, a 2017 CPHS alum, is now 8-0 on the season and ranked third in the country at 133 pounds.

Most recently Fix won an 11-3 major decision against No. 7 Evan Frost to help the No. 5 Cowboys win a 21-12 upset against No. 4 Iowa State (9-2) Saturday night.

OSU is now 10-0 on the season and will return to action Friday with a home dual against Arizona State (3-4).

2022 alum Ethan Norton is in his sophomore season at College of the Ozarks. The 157-pounder went 1-2 at the Pete Willson Invitational this weekend, earning a 6-5 decision over Muskingum’s Zeke Poulos.

Men’s Basketball

2021 CPHS alum Marlo Fox is in his junior year at Rogers State University. The Hillcats are 11-8 on the season and 8-5 in the MIAA conference.

Rogers State will look to bounce back from a 75-53 loss at Missouri Southern when it hosts Washburn (13-6, 9-4) Thursday in Claremore.

Cheer

2022 alum Ashley Blake is in her sophomore year at Oklahoma Baptist University while 2020 alum Coleman Wright is representing the Sandites at Nichols College.

Women’s Track and Field

2021 alum Erika Baker is a distance runner at Pittsburg State University, where she placed 24th in the 5000 meter run Saturday at the Gorillas’ home invitational. The junior ran the event in 19:19.54 for eighth place in her heat.

She also ran in the recent Rumble in the Jungle Invitational on January 19th and placed 28th in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:18.55.

Layne Kirkendoll is in her sophomore season at South Dakota State and is already seeing major success.

The 2022 alum won the high jump event at the Jim Emmerich Alumni meet on January 20th with a mark of 5 ft. 5 in. and was seventh in long jump at 17 ft. 7.5 in. as the team placed second overall.

Men’s Track and Field

2019 alum Aden Baughman made his Pittsburg State University debut at the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational on the 19th.

The junior ORU transfer placed fourth in the 600-meter finals with a time of 1:12.81, just 0.6 seconds behind the champion. He also ran the second leg of the 1600-meter relay, helping the Gorillas to a sixth place finish. Pitt State won the invitational overall.

At the Pittsburg State Invitational on the 27th he took third place in the 800-meter finals in 1:53.13. He also ran the 1600-meter relay on the Pitt State B-team that placed 10th.

Volleyball

2020 alum Gloria Mutiri is playing professional volleyball with USC Muenster in Germany. Muenster is 5-12 on the season and will return to action on Saturday against the Vilsbiburg Red Ravens.

Muenster won its latest match 3-0 against VC Neuwied, 25-11, 25-21, and 25-16. Mutiri scored 7 points in the match as the No. 3 scorer for USC.

Sandites Wrap Up College Cross Country Season, Prepare for Indoor Track

2021 Charles Page High School alum Erika Baker is in her first year at Pittsburg State University after transferring from Oral Roberts.

The Gorillas just wrapped up their season with an 18th place performance at the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Baker competed in four events for the Gorillas this season, wrapping up her season at the Firestarter Classic on October 14th when she ran a personal record 5K time of 19:58.7 for ninth place.

The junior will return to action with the Track & Field team this winter.

Aden Baughman (2019) will kick off his junior indoor season at Pitt State on December 8th at the Boo Rogers Combined Events. He also transferred from Oral Roberts this year.

Layne Kirkendoll (2022) will leap into her sophomore season at South Dakota State on December 1st in the SDSU Holiday Open. She competed in seven meets for the Jackrabbits last indoor season with five top-five finishes in the high jump.

Sandite Basketball Preview: Boys and Girls Poised for Success in 2022

The Charles Page High School varsity basketball season will officially tip off Tuesday, November 29th at Sapulpa.

The Sandite basketball teams went different directions last season. The boys will look to get back to form as they seek their first winning season since 2020, while the girls will look to build momentum off of last season’s state semifinal appearance.

After graduating a talented senior class that accounted for 75% of last season’s scoring, the boys will look to build a new identity behind a mostly young, inexperienced roster.

Fans can expect big things from sophomore Kooper Kelley, the lone returning starter, who averaged 6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1 steal last year.

Junior Alijah Roper also saw extensive action last season, averaging 2.9 points over 21 games. 6-foot-5 sophomore Blake Johnson also played in 21 games, averaging 1.3 points and 1.8 rebounds.

Kade Holland, Luke Hooper, Michael Foster, Jax Marshall, Mark Lair, and Sam Hayes will provide the team’s senior leadership.

The Sandites went 5-18 last season and were 7-11 in 2020, but have seen tremendous success under tenth-year head coach Eric Savage with four winning seasons, two Regional championships, and two State tournament appearances.

Savage holds a 423-218 head coaching record over 21 years and is 118-125 at Sand Springs.

The Lady Sandites are entering their fourth season under head coach Josh Berry, who holds a 50-21 record at Sand Springs and a 148-134 career mark.

The girls went 23-4 last season for their best record since 2017, winning the school’s eighth Regional title and seventh Area championship.

Sand Springs took big losses in Journey Armstead, Layne Kirkendoll, and Leyshia Morris, but still has lots of star power ready to make a name for itself.

6-foot senior Hailey Jackson averaged 13.9 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals last season, with three double-doubles and a career-best 31-point performance against Broken Arrow.

Juniors Taiona Morris and Sakauri Wilson also return as starters after combining for 11.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.9 steals per game last year.

Kiaryn Taylor, Fayth Walker, Abigaile Martin, Patience Pearce, and Tay'Ja Butler all saw solid playing time last season and will give the Sandites strong rotational depth. Freshman Calla Fueshko is also expected to make an impact.

When the girls tip off against Sapulpa at 6:30 p.m. they will be looking for their first Highway 97 Rivalry win since 2019. The boys, however, have won three straight meetings with Sapulpa since 2019.

The girls will then travel to the She Got Game Classic in Dallas over the weekend. The home opener for both teams will be December 6th against Muskogee with the girls playing at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Roundup: Sandite Coach Josh Berry Joining Kansas Wesleyan Hall of Fame

Kansas Wesleyan University announced Wednesday that it would be inducting the 2006-2007 men’s basketball team into the Coyote Athletic Hall of Fame in October. 

Lady Sandite head coach Josh Berry was an All-Conference honorable mention on that team, which went 28-4 overall to set a school record and won the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. 

Berry transferred to KCAC as a senior out of Sterling College and averaged 3.7 points, 3 assists, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game.

Now entering his fourth year, Berry holds a 50-21 record as the Sand Springs girls’ coach.

The Coyote Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held October 22 during Homecoming week.

Journey Armstead Shines in All-State Hoops

One of the best to ever don the black and gold got to represent Sand Springs one last time Wednesday night at the OCA All-State basketball game.

Journey Armstead scored 18 points Wednesday night at the Sapulpa Chieftain Center but it wasn’t enough to secure the win as the West defeated the East 62-61.

Armstead led all scorers and added five rebounds and three assists. She will continue her career at Hutchinson Community College.

Junior High Fishing Duo Competes at Nationals

Sand Springs junior high students Drew Turner and Caden Strawn earned their way to the Bassmaster Junior Series National Championship at the Carroll County 1000-Acre Recreational Lake in Tennessee.

After placing third at the Oklahoma State Championship, the Sandites finished the season fifth in the nation. The duo turned in a haul of 16 pounds, 11 ounces.

Sandite Golfer Wins State Amateur Championship

Meghan Charles, a 2021 graduate of Charles Page High School and Oklahoma City University sophomore, won the Women’s Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Gaillardia Country Club in Oklahoma City.

Charles defeated Edmond’s Ashlynn Weir 4 and 3 in the President’s Flight semifinals, then beat Oklahoma City’s Drew Faires 3 and 2 in the finals.

Two CPHS Grads Sign College LOIs

Two more members of the Class of 2022 signed college letters of intent in recent weeks. 

High Jump State Champion Layne Kirkendoll signed with South Dakota State University, an NCAA Division I program that competes in the Summit League. The Jackrabbits placed third in their conference this past season.

Kirkendoll holds the all-time Sand Springs records in long jump and high jump, and also received college offers as a basketball star.

Gabe Glenn signed to play baseball at Allen Community College in Kansas. Glenn batted .433 for the Sandites this past season, scoring 37 runs and 45 RBI. Allen competes in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and the NJCAA.

Sandites Selected for PBR Showcase

Several Sand Springs baseball players were selected to represent Oklahoma at the Prep Baseball Report (PBR) Junior Future Games showcase in Lakepoint, Georgia.

Alex Dudley and Jackson Turney were selected from the Class of 2026, Eli Buxton represented the Class of 2024, and Kayden Campbell was chosen from the Class of 2025. 

Sandite Track & Field celebrates successful season with donut relay

The first Track and Field season of the Gloria Avey era may have been highlighted by Layne Kirkendoll’s High Jump State Title, but its glorious finale was a donut relay.

The Charles Page High School Sandites didn’t stop practicing just because the season ended last week, but they did make practice more fun with some end-of-the-year games that included “Red Light, Green Light” and a three-legged race.

“I want the kids to have fun, but I also want the kids to know that we’re serious about it,” said Avey. “So being serious and having fun are my two goals, and I feel like we accomplished that this year.”

Avey took over the Sand Springs program after three years as an assistant, working two years under Tim Dial and one year under Virginia Williams.

“I’ve had a lot of coaches that I’ve learned from over the years. I’ve been coaching for Sand Springs for four years and I feel like I’ve learned a lot, kind of taking things from different people.”

Avey’s first season was a definite success as the girls placed 15th at State for their highest finish since 2017, and the boys placed 22nd for their highest finish since 2019.

“I learned a lot,” said Avey. “I’m definitely going to do some things differently next year, but I think it was a really successful season. I think the majority of the kids had a really good time and they all improved on their times.”

The 28-year-old first-time head coach has spent most of her life in Sand Springs, but actually graduated from the now-defunct Moriah Christian Academy, which didn’t have an athletics program. 

“I’ve always been a runner. I’ve always enjoyed running and I’ve just run on my own ever since I was in middle school. Fitness and exercise has always been a passion of mine so I kind of got recruited to (coach) track.”

In addition to running, Avey has also been involved in CrossFit over the years. She graduated Oklahoma State University in 2017 and is also a math teacher at the high school.

Her husband, Kevin, is the strength and conditioning coach for the Sandites, as well as the head coach of the brand new girls powerlifting program and an assistant football coach.

Of course, the Sandites can credit a lot of their season’s success to athletes like Kirkendoll - the senior leaper with Division I prospects.

“Layne has made podium every year of high school except the year she lost to COVID,” said Avey. 

“She’s just got that God-given talent. There’s just a few little tweaks that we make and little cues that we give her, but she just pretty much knows what to do.”

Kirkendoll already had full-ride scholarship offers from Oral Roberts University and South Dakota State coming into her senior year and she has also collected some offers to play collegiate basketball, though she has yet to make a commitment. 

In addition to Kirkendoll the Sandites will also lose shot put qualifier Matthew Shelton, discus qualifier Jestin Rawlins, and relay runner Jazmin Lopez, but will return Kelsi Hilton, Josie Myers, and Gracie Gifford from the 4x800 team next season.
