Sandite Baseball Splits With Broken Arrow

The hunt for the 6A-3 district title is still wide open as the Charles Page High School baseball team (11-5, 4-2) split a district series with Broken Arrow (13-3, 5-1) last week.

“One of our goals every year is always to finish in the top two and host a Regional,” says head coach Matt Brown.

“We’ve put that opportunity right in front of us. When we go and play how we’re supposed to play, we’re going to end up in a good place at the end of the year.”

The Sandites have now split series with two of the top three teams in the district, making next week’s games against district-leading Jenks (12-6, 6-0) crucial. Sand Springs will play the Trojans at home on Monday and Tuesday on the road.

“Jenks hasn’t lost a district game yet so obviously they’re good,” says Brown.”And we’re pretty good too, so it should be some fun baseball games.”

On Monday the Sandites fell 7-1 to Broken Arrow despite an eight-strikeout effort from Eli Buxton (1-3). Rhen Rutledge scored the lone run on an RBI single from Schlehuber in the bottom of the first.

Schlehuber (3-0) got the win in Tuesday’s rematch with Easton Webb recording the save in a shootout.

“We’re really deep on the mound,” says Brown. “We’ve got a lot of experience on the mound and I think that’s our strength. We’re really pretty well rounded.”

The teams combined for 23 hits as the Sandites scored the most runs of any Broken Arrow opponent this season.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Sandites took the lead once and for all in the second on a two-run single from Wyatt Rutledge. Elliott and Rhen Rutledge added one-run singles to go up 5-2.

The Tigers cut it to 5-4 in the third but Rhen Rutledge added his second scoring hit in the fourth to bring in Brody Rutledge, who tripled. Dom Ornelas’s fifth homer of the year put the visiting Sandites up 8-4.

“Dom is obviously our leader offensively for sure and Rhen and Brody have pretty great years so far. We’ve worked really really hard in the weight room all year long and it’s nice to see that translate out on the field.”

Broken Arrow scored two more in the fifth but Rhen Rutledge added an insurance run in the sixth on a single from Ornelas.

The Sandites had a Thursday game against Lincoln Christian rained out before winning a 6-4 non-district battle against Muskogee (4-10) on Friday.

The Sandites stormed out to a 6-0 lead before a sixth-inning Rougher rally flipped the script from blowout to nail-bitter.

“In Oklahoma, everyone’s good,” says Brown. “Every time you show up, there’s someone in the other dugout who’s capable of beating you.”

“Everybody in 6A has good kids…You lose focus for even a second and mess around - you’ll get beat.”

Four walks, a sacrifice hit from Schlehuber, and a two-run single from Wyatt Rutledge put the home team up 4-0 in the bottom of the first.

Jackson Turney added an RBI double in the second and Brody Rutledge scored on a sacrifice fly from Ornelas after a leadoff triple in the fourth.

Gage Elliott (4-0) got the start and win on the mound, fanning four with one hit in three innings.

Jace Arnold (1-1) entered the game in the fourth and struck out five before getting in a bind in the top of the sixth. After loading the bases with two walks and a single he struck out a sixth before Doc Estes blasted a bases-clearing triple to get Muskogee on the board.

Arnold ended with seven strikeouts to three hits and two walks in three innings. Webb recorded his second save of the week to close out the game.

“I really like where our program is at,” says Brown. “I feel like we can compete with anybody. I know for sure our kids aren’t scared of anybody. We’re at a place right now where our kids show up and expect to win and it doesn’t matter who’s in the other dugout. They expect to win every single time.”

Sand Springs will host Glenpool (7-11) Thursday at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to Edmond Deer Creek (10-8) on Saturday.

Kelsi Hilton placed third in the high school girls 140-pound bracket. She took a 4-2 lead against Broken Arrow’s Alexandrea Coombs but got stuck in the third period. She pinned her next two opponents and earned a rematch with Coombs in the finals, this time prevailing 10-4.

Sandite Roundup: Shelli Brown celebrates 600th win in 25th season

25th-year Sandite Softball Head Coach Shelli Brown is presented with a commemorative ball for her 600th win by the Class of 2022 seniors.

25th-year Sandite Softball Head Coach Shelli Brown is presented with a commemorative ball for her 600th win by the Class of 2022 seniors.

A version of this story was originally published in the Sand Springs Leader.

Shelli Brown has been the head softball coach at Charles Page High School since before her current class of seniors was even born. In fact, she’s been the head coach since before some of her assistant coaches were born.

Now in her 25th season as a Sandite, Coach Brown is a pillar in the community.

“Shelli’s an icon in women’s softball at the high school level,” says Sand Springs Athletic Director Rod Sitton. “She started her career here, hopefully she ends her career here. She’s not only a great coach, but a great leader and a great example for the young ladies that go through here. It’s been a real privilege to have her here and work with her, and also be her boss. She’s just a great person all around.”

On Tuesday, August 24th, the team celebrated Brown’s 600th career win in fast pitch. The milestone came in a 14-6 rout of Adair on Thursday, August 19th at the Rogers State festival in Claremore. They also beat Lincoln Christian 11-2 in the first game of the festival.

Owning a 603-326 record with 10 regional championships, two academic state championships, two district championships, and one conference championship, Brown has been one of the most successful coaches in school history in any sport. Under her guidance, 32 sandites have received All-State accolades and at least 60 have signed to play at the next level.

“It’s not about excellence just in softball itself, but it’s also about academic excellence,” added District Superintendent Sherry Durkee. “Personally, I’m super proud of the two academic state championships.”

Prior to the Tuesday-night doubleheader against Enid, Brown’s senior class presented her with a commemorative game ball signed by the entire team, along with flowers and balloons. Then they gave her a 601st and 602nd win by drubbing the Pacers 20-3 and 3-1.

Raegan Rector went 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI and two doubles in the first game, Mikenna Stephens was 3-of-4 with four RBI, and Kelsi Hilton was 3-of-4 with four runs.

With temperatures nearing 100℉, the bats slowed down in game two, and the Sandites actually needed a fifth-inning comeback. Trailing 1-0, Taylor Skipper tied it up with a single to score Ashlyn Clark, then Skipper and Jolee McNally scored on an error for the lead.

Nataley Crawford pitched eight strikeouts and only three hits in the first game, and Hilton got the win in game two.

The Sandites followed it up with a 12-4 district beatdown of Bartlesville on Thursday that saw Hilton go 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple, two runs, and four RBI, while also striking out four batters in four innings from the circle. Lauren Hammock was also 3-of-4 with three runs and two RBI.

Sandite Softball is now 5-3 on the season and will continue district action on the road with a Thursday game at Bixby (9-2, 5-0).

CPHS Volleyball

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Sandite Volleyball team (7-4) suffered a 3-1 conference loss to No. 3 Broken Arrow (10-3) Tuesday, August 24th at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites lost sets of 25-15, 25-22, and 25-9, but stole the third set 25-20 for their first game win against the Tigers since 2018.

Payton Robbins scored nine kills with three blocks, 16 digs, and three aces in the loss. Layla Lenex had three kills and five blocks. Tehya Johnson had two kills, two aces, and 23 assists. Jacelyn Smith scored seven kills and two blocks. Charley Fahland had two aces and 17 digs, and Kasidy Holland had seven kills and three digs.

Sandite Volleyball will travel to Regent Prep Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Cross Country

The Lady Sandite varsity cross country team placed 11th in a 5K run at Edmond Deer Creek, August 21st, led by Jazmin Lopez in fifth place out of 105 runners with a time of 23:13.98.

The boys team didn’t have enough runners to place as a team, but Noah Hanlon finished in 26th with a time of 19:13.58.

The elementary girls placed third at Kiefer Saturday, August 28th. Chloe Grona won the one-mile run in 5:52.45, Josie Grona placed third in 6:19.71, and Sophie Grona placed 15th in 7:06.99.

CPHS Softball: Sandites roll Lincoln Christian 11-1, lose to Coweta in extra inning

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (9-1) started its season on the best undefeated run in many years, but after beating Lincoln Christian 11-1 in the first game of the Rogers State University festival, they fell 5-4 to Coweta in an international tiebreaker Thursday afternoon.

Against Lincoln Christian (2-7) they needed only four innings to secure the win. Nataley Crawford (3-0, 6-2) got the start and win in the pitcher’s circle, throwing four hits, four strikeouts, and two walks in three innings. Raegan Rector made her season pitching debut with two strikeouts in relief.

The girls wasted no time in jumping out to a commanding lead, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Madison Lee capitalized on a walk with two stolen bases and scored the first run on an error. Rector and Jaden Jordan also drew walks and came in on a double from Aliyah Taff, who went on to score on a wild pitch. Drew Hawkins singled, Lauren Hammock walked, and Nately Crawford brought them both in on a single before the inning came to a close.

The Bulldogs put two runners on base in the second, but both were stranded after Crawford struck out the next three batters. Rector hit a double in the bottom of the inning, then scored on a triple from Taff. Taff scored on an error to make it 8-0.

Adyson Roberts hit a single in the third, took third on a double from Mackenzie Kelley, then stole home to avert the shutout, but Sand Springs went right back to scoring in the bottom of the inning. Lee scored on a single from Avery Tanner, who came in on a passed ball to make it 10-1. Lee finished the game off with an RBI single to score Lauren Hammock and the game ended mid-inning.

Roberts got the loss for the Bulldogs, throwing eight hits, four strikeouts, and eight walks in 3.1 innings.

The loss to Coweta was nearly a come-from-behind victory as the girls scored three runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-3 advantage. The Tigers forced extra innings, however, and won it in an international tiebreaker.

Lee and Jordan hit a pair of doubles in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead, but Kayley Lott doubled in Chaney Helton to tie it. The Sandites stranded seven runners over the next four innings and Coweta took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three singles and a pair of runs from Helton and Sherri Mason.

Lee kicked off a Sandite rally in the seventh with a single, then Tanner hit a double to put the team in scoring position. Rector hit a two-run double, then scored on a single from Jordan for the lead. Coweta wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and put together four singles with a run from Karley Mcnamee to force an extra inning.

In the tiebreaker inning, both teams started their at-bats with a runner on second. The Sandites failed to land a hit and left Kelsi Hilton stranded on third, while Holcomb tagged up on a line out from Denton to secure the win.

Taff (6-1, 23-15) took her first loss of the season with twelve hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts. Braedyn Sheofee got the win with ten hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

Sandite softball will look to kick off a new win streak Friday at 10:00 a.m. when they play Stillwater (6-2) in the first round of the Stillwater Festival. They will also play Deer Creek (4-2) at 12:00 p.m.

CPHS Volleyball: Lincoln Christian snaps Sandite winning streak 3-2

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (9-7) had an eight-match win streak snapped Thursday evening at Lincoln Christian School (6-5) as the Bulldogs overcame early errors for a 3-2 non-conference victory.

Five Sandites recorded kills and five posted blocks in the first set, holding strong for a 25-19 win, capped by a tipped ball from Vanessa Wyrick. The Bulldogs never led, but also never fell far behind, trailing by only six points at their worst.

Lincoln came out hard in round two, winning five straight rallies after an ace from Raylynn Mong. A kill and an ace from Wyrick cut it to 6-5 but Micah Clayton got hot with three kills in a 6-1 run for the Bulldogs. Bayleigh Smith was big at the net with four kills and three blocks, while Hope Keltner had a kill, a block, and three aces. The home team ended on a ten-point streak for the dominant 25-11 win.

Game three was closely fought with seven lead changes and ten tie scores. Sand Springs took its final lead with a four-point run at 14-11. After a kill from Devree Youngblood at 15-13 the Bulldogs went on a seven-point streak with three kills from Keltner that the Sandites never recovered from. The visitors won four of the final six rallies, but couldn’t quite tie it and Smith attacked the 25-23 game-winner.

Sand Springs stormed back in the fourth set to tie the match. Raena Marrick was first on the board, but the visitors won the next six rallies, capped by back-to-back aces from Youngblood. The Sandites took their biggest lead at 16-7 before the Bulldogs tried to stage a comeback. Katie Gleason aced to cut it to 21-19, but the visitors won four of the final five rallies with an ace from Wyrick and a kill from Youngblood.

The home team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final game and never gave it up, finishing on a five-rally streak for the 15-6 victory.

Clayton led all scorers with sixteen kills. Youngblood had a team-high fourteen kills, seventeen digs, and three aces. Madison Burris led the Sandites in assists with fourteen, and Jacelyn Smith had a team-high four blocks.

Lincoln Christian will return to action Tuesday in Coweta (6-4) at 6:00 p.m. Sand Springs will host Muskogee (4-4, 1-2) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in a return to conference action.
