CPHS Volleyball: Lincoln Christian snaps Sandite winning streak 3-2

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (9-7) had an eight-match win streak snapped Thursday evening at Lincoln Christian School (6-5) as the Bulldogs overcame early errors for a 3-2 non-conference victory.

Five Sandites recorded kills and five posted blocks in the first set, holding strong for a 25-19 win, capped by a tipped ball from Vanessa Wyrick. The Bulldogs never led, but also never fell far behind, trailing by only six points at their worst.

Lincoln came out hard in round two, winning five straight rallies after an ace from Raylynn Mong. A kill and an ace from Wyrick cut it to 6-5 but Micah Clayton got hot with three kills in a 6-1 run for the Bulldogs. Bayleigh Smith was big at the net with four kills and three blocks, while Hope Keltner had a kill, a block, and three aces. The home team ended on a ten-point streak for the dominant 25-11 win.

Game three was closely fought with seven lead changes and ten tie scores. Sand Springs took its final lead with a four-point run at 14-11. After a kill from Devree Youngblood at 15-13 the Bulldogs went on a seven-point streak with three kills from Keltner that the Sandites never recovered from. The visitors won four of the final six rallies, but couldn’t quite tie it and Smith attacked the 25-23 game-winner.

Sand Springs stormed back in the fourth set to tie the match. Raena Marrick was first on the board, but the visitors won the next six rallies, capped by back-to-back aces from Youngblood. The Sandites took their biggest lead at 16-7 before the Bulldogs tried to stage a comeback. Katie Gleason aced to cut it to 21-19, but the visitors won four of the final five rallies with an ace from Wyrick and a kill from Youngblood.

The home team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final game and never gave it up, finishing on a five-rally streak for the 15-6 victory.
