Lady Sandites roll Booker T. Washington on Homecoming, secure home Regional

The OSSAA has released its 6A regional basketball pairings and the No. 2 ranked Charles Page High School girls will be hosting their own tournament, beginning Thursday, February 24.

Sand Springs will host No. 15 Muskogee (2-11), No. 7 Putnam City North (9-9), and No. 10 Ponca City (9-10), with a first-round game against Muskogee. 

The Lady Sandites already beat Putnam North 50-33 at the Jenks/Union tournament, and beat Muskogee 56-43 on Thursday. They have yet to play Ponca City this season.

“The way I see it is, in the playoffs anybody can get beat if you’re not ready,” says Sand Springs head coach Josh Berry. 

“Jenks is a perfect example. We had two really good games against them, then we’re in a dog fight and we barely got away with that one.”

After routing the Trojans by 34 and 21 points in two games earlier this season, the Sandites only won 53-50 on Tuesday. The No. 13 Trojans (5-10) never trailed in the first half and didn’t relinquish their lead till Sand Springs went on a 16-point run in the third quarter.

Hailey Jackson led all scorers with 19 points and 10 rebounds in that game, and Journey Armstead added 16 points and 6 rebounds.

“You can’t take any team lightly,” said Berry. “We’ve got to come out ready to play from the start.”

“Even Muskogee; they gave us a run last night. All of them have the potential to beat us, so we’ve got to go in with that mindset and play as hard as we can.”

After falling behind 18-3 late in the first quarter, Muskogee came storming back in the second and cut it as close as 25-22. Although the Roughers only led for three possessions in the opening minutes, they kept it far closer than one might have expected from a two-win team.

Jackson scored 23 points in that game with 8 rebounds, followed by Layne Kirkendoll with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

On Friday the Sandites pushed their win streak to four with a 65-40 Homecoming victory over No. 8 Booker T. Washington (10-10). They never trailed after the first quarter and dominated the second half 32-12. 

“I feel like today we did some great things,” Berry said on Friday. “They played together. We’ve got different people stepping up and that’s what we’re going to need.”

“As long as we’ve got that and we’re having fun out there, I like our chances. If we don’t have that energy then we’re not very good but as long as we’ve got energy and passion and we’re playing the right way, then we can play with anybody.”

Jackson scored 24 points to lead all scorers, followed by Armstead with 16, and Kirkendoll with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Armstead was also crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the boys’ game.

“I’m just proud of all of them,” said Berry. “What nobody’s really talking about is Leyshia Morris, how much her passing really helps us out. She makes a lot of really great passes to Hailey (Jackson) and to Laynie (Kirkendoll) to get them wide-open looks. She does it over and over again, she’s a valuable asset for us.”

As for what the Sandites need to focus on before the playoffs…

“We’ve just got to play harder, we’ve got to rebound better, and we’ve got to box out. We’ve got to be disciplined on every single possession and not take plays off.”

The Lady Sandites are now 16-3 on the season and 9-2 for second place in Frontier Valley Conference action. Next up will be conference road games at No. 11 Owasso (8-11) on Monday and No. 6 Broken Arrow (13-7) on Tuesday, followed by Senior Night against No. 14 Bartlesville (4-15) on Friday.

Boys Basketball

The 6A-East No. 14 Sandite boys (5-14, 1-10) have dropped four in a row and had a tough week at home, falling 78-41 to Jenks, 59-54 to Muskogee, and 68-47 to Booker T. Washington. 

They held No. 2 Jenks to a 30-25 halftime advantage before the Trojans regrouped for a second-half rout. Jason Clark scored 11 in that game. 

On Thursday they took No. 10 Muskogee to overtime behind 14 points from Cale Askew, 11 from Clark, and 10 from Alijah Roper. The two teams combined for an astounding 48 fouls in that game, and Muskogee did most of its damage at the free throw line.

On Friday JD Dickson scored 11 and Ethan Oakley added 10 in the Homecoming loss.

The boys also received their Regional assignment this week and will travel to No. 3 Putnam City West (16-4) on Friday, February 25.

Wrestling

The Sandite wrestling team wrapped up the regular season with a 7-4 dual record after falling 45-15 to No. 4 Broken Arrow on Monday. Next up is the 6A-East Regional tournament, starting Friday at Stillwater.

Lady Sandites take first loss, place third at Jenks/Union Invitational

All good things come to an end eventually, as did the Lady Sandites’ undefeated start to the season Friday afternoon at the Frank Herald Field House. 

After winning 11 consecutive games, the Class 6A No. 6 Charles Page High School girls basketball team (12-1) fell 56-32 to No. 1 Edmond North (15-0) in the Jenks/Union Invitational semifinals.

Sand Springs bounced back in the third-place battle with No. 16 Putnam City North (6-7), however, and dominated the Panthers defensively to win 50-33.

“(Edmond North) is probably the best team right now in 6A, so it’s a good thing that we got to see them,” said Sand Springs coach Josh Berry. 

“I was just proud that they kept fighting, they didn’t just lay down after a bad start,” said Berry. “The only thing from here is to get back in the gym and work and put in the time and see what we can do from here on.”

Journey Armstead led the Sandites with 14 points against the top-ranked Huskies, but was the only Sandite in double digits. She also scored 22 points in the quarterfinals against Jenks and was named to the All-Tournament team following Saturday’s game.

Hailey Jackson led the Sandites against the Panthers with 12 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Layne Kirkendoll with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Armstead was held to 9 points for her lowest tally of the season.

“Layne is a special talent,” said Berry. “She’s getting better and better, she’s getting healthier. The healthier she gets, I think you’ll see a lot more of those double-doubles from her.”

Sand Springs never trailed after the early first quarter and held Putnam North to only five points in both the second and fourth quarters, but the Panthers still threatened at 37-28 going into the fourth.

Failing to put away free throws proved to be the biggest struggle for the Sandites, who shot well from the field, but only went 7-of-19 at the charity stripe.

“After three days playing back to back to back, we’ll take a win, “said Berry. “We know what we’ve got to work on. We’ve got a lot of work to do between now and Tuesday.”

The Sandites will be traveling to No. 4 Bixby (11-3 overall, 4-1 conference) Tuesday as they aim to improve to 6-0 in Frontier Valley Conference action. Things won’t get any easier from there, as they’ll host 5A No. 2 Sapulpa (9-4, 2-2) on Friday and No. 5 Union (10-3, 4-1) the following Tuesday.

OSSAA Football: 2020-2021 District Assignments released

The Charles Page High School football team will enter a new era in 2020 under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Bobby Klinck, replacing Dustin Kinard who led the Sandites for thirteen years. The new season will also feature some new teams on the schedule, following the release of new District assignments from the state’s governing athletic board.

The OSSAA released its district football assignments Wednesday afternoon, and Sand Springs will see five familiar faces and two newcomers in District 2. Bartlesville, Bixby, Booker T. Washington, Muskogee, Ponca City, and Sand Springs will remain. Shawnee and Sapulpa are dropping to 5A. Choctaw and Putnam City West are moving over from District 1.

Deer Creek, Del City, Lawton, Midwest City, and Stillwater are all returning to District 1. In addition to losing Choctaw and Putnam West to District 2, they’re also losing Putnam City to 6A Division 1. Putnam City North will drop from 6A-1, Northwest Classen will move up from 5A, and U.S. Grant is rejoining OSSAA competition after a six-year hiatus.

District 1

Stillwater went 7-0 to win their second-straight District 1 title, and were 12-1 as State Runners-Up for the second-straight year.

Del City was 6-1 in District 1 last year for second place, and 9-3 overall for their best season since 2012. Their three losses were all to State Finalists.

Midwest City was 4-3 in District 1 last year for fourth place, and was 4-7 overall for their worst season since 2012.

Putnam City North went 3-4 in 6A-1-2 last year for fifth place, and were 6-4 overall for their second-straight winning season.

Deer Creek went 3-4 in District 1 last year for fifth place, tying their previous district record. They were 5-5 overall for their best mark since 2015.

Lawton went 2-5 in District 1 for sixth place, and were 5-5 overall for their worst record since 2008.

Northwest Classen was 1-6 for seventh place in District 5A-2 and 3-7 overall. They were 2-8 on the field for their best mark since 2016, then received a third win when their final loss was overturned by a forfeit.

U.S. Grant got a six-year pardon from OSSAA competition to try and rebuild their program from the ground up. They are rejoining the league after going 6-3 on an independent schedule for their first winning record since 1998.

District 2

Bixby went 7-0 in District 2 for their second-straight district title, and have won 25-straight games for their second-straight State title.

Muskogee was 5-2 for second place in District 2 and were 8-3 overall for their third winning season in the past four years.

Choctaw went 5-2 for third place in District 1 last year and were 8-4 overall for their best mark and first post-season win since at least 2004.

Booker T. Washington went 5-2 for third place in District 2 and were 6-5 overall for their eighth-straight winning season.

Ponca City was 3-4 for fifth place in District 2 and 5-5 overall for their best record since 2005.

Bartlesville was 3-4 for sixth place in District 2 last year and 3-7 overall for their fourth-straight losing season.

Sand Springs was 1-6 for seventh place in District 2 and 2-8 overall for their third-straight losing season and worst record since 2009.

Putnam West was 0-7 in District 1 and 0-10 overall. They were shut out four times. It was their third-straight losing season and second 0-10 mark of the decade.

Lady Sandite Soccer season comes to an end at Deer Creek

The Charles Page High School Girls' Soccer Team (9-6) traveled to Edmond Thursday night for their season finale against Deer Creek High School (11-3) and fell 5-2 to cap a disappointing end to a season that started with lots of promise. 

The girls started the year with a bang, racking up a 3-1-1 record in preseason scrimmages, including winning the Stillwater preseason tournament. In the season-opener at East Central they dominated their opponents with a 10-0 mercy rule shutout in only 23 minutes. Over the course of the season they racked up six shutouts and a championship trophy at the Edison Green and White Tournament.

The girls' six-straight win streak came to an end with a 6-0 loss to Union, who is currently ranked number one in the nation with a 30-game win streak. They rebounded with a dominating 9-1 performance against Putnam City North, which saw Megan DeShazo score six goals. From there, however, they lost the final four of the season and failed to make the playoffs.

Things started out fairly close as Deer Creek held a 3-1 lead after the first half, with the lone Sandite goal coming from Kyndal Zicker.

DeShazo narrowed the gap to 3-2 on a penalty kick exactly four minutes into the second half, but Megan Neilson returned the favor seven minutes later for the two-point advantage. 

Oral Roberts University-signee Taylor Reed added to the lead on a high-sailing free kick from 27 yards out that sailed just over Sandite goalie Abigail Banks's head into the top right corner with 21 minutes to play.

With a 5-2 lead and 17 minutes left, the Lady Antlers pulled their starting lineup and sent in the second string. That evened things out quite a bit, but even the youngsters from an annual powerhouse like Deer Creek are above average players and the two teams were evenly matched for the duration and regulation expired before either team could score again. 

With the bulk of the ladies' wins coming against non-district foes, the girls settled for sixth in the district and failed to make the playoffs. Despite the heavy losses at the end of the season, the girls still outscored their opponents by an impressive 46-26 overall this season.

DeShazo led her team in scoring with 13 goals, followed by Zicker with 12, Kayla Foster with 10, Brooklyn Eardley with 9, and Kylie Taylor with 2.

Foster, who is signed to play with Missouri University of Science and Technology next season, led for much of the season, scoring two hat tricks in the first four games, but was sidelined for half a dozen games after sustaining an injury against Bixby. 

DeShazo, a junior, opened the season with a hat trick against East Central, and had the highest single-game performance for the girls with her six goals against Putnam North. 

The girls will be losing McKinzie Horton, Marissa Doll, Bryn Lewis, Taylor Coyle, Ashley Marino, and Alexis Slabby plus four players who are signed to play at the collegiate level. Eardley is headed to ORU, Kylee Cramer is headed to Oklahoma Baptist University, and Madison Dye will be playing for Northeastern State University.

DeShazo dominates Putnam North with 6 goals, Lady Sandites win 9-1

The Charles Page High School girls soccer team (9-2) returned home to face Putnam City North High School (4-5) after a tough road loss. The Lady Sandites fell to the Union High School Lady Redskins (9-0) who are ranked #2 in the nation earlier this week, but rebounded with an impressive 9-1 victory over the Lady Panthers, their second highest win this season.

Sand Springs got things rolling quickly, scoring two goals in the first eight minutes en route to a 5-0 lead at the end of the first half. Junior Megan Deshazo got things started in the opening moments off of an assist from Kyndal Zicker. Deshazo scored the next two as well to notch a hat trick less than a quarter of the way into the game, one coming via penalty kick. Zicker got herself on the board after a free kick by Brooklyn Eardley ricocheted directly to her for a wide open shot. The Lady Panther goalie got a hand on it but not enough to stop the strike. Deshazo scored her fourth goal of the game just before the half on a misplay by the Lady Panther defense.  

The second half was nearly as lopsided as the first, though Lady Panther Courtney Tate managed to get her team on the board. Zicker and Eardley both scored for Sand Springs on penalty kicks, and Deshazo scored another two goals to put her total at an incredible six for the match.  

The back line for Charles Page was stifling, allowing just one shot on goal for the entire match. The line consisted of Jae Anthony-Wilson, Bryn Lewis, Emma Peak, and Mckinzie Horton. 

The Charles Page High School boys soccer team (2-9) came home for another tough matchup, this time against Putnam City North High School (7-4). Earlier in the week the Sandites battled hard against nationally ranked Union High School (9-1) but came up short. 

It was another hard fought nail biter for Garland Betts's team, as the match saw the visiting Panthers take an early one goal lead that they would not relinquish. Sand Springs made a number of solid runs downfield but were unable to come up with the equalizer. In the final minute Sandite of the Week Ethan Baxter dribbled deep into the box with a defender draped all over him, but couldn't manage to get the ball off of his cleat and the Sandites fell 1-0.  

Both teams will return to district play on April 12th, in Jenks. The Girls will play at 6 pm and the Boys at 8 pm. The Trojans are 2-4 and the Lady Trojans are 5-3.
