Lady Sandites Win Carl Albert Titan Classic, Wilson Named MVP

Sakauri Wilson’s MVP performance and a blowout fourth quarter led the Charles Page High School girls basketball team to a 61-49 come-from-behind win over Carl Albert in the Titan Classic finals Saturday in Midwest City.

The Lady Sandites trailed 40-31 late in the third before riding a 15-0 streak into the fourth to take the lead.

“I just asked them going into the fourth ‘hey, let’s be us.’” said head coach Josh Berry.

“Let’s have some energy and let’s play with a little bit of passion and grit and toughness. They responded and they did that. I think Aaliyah (Simone) made a play to start it off with a couple of jump balls and after that the rest was history.”

The Sandites brought an aggressive press defense, coming up with five steals in the fourth quarter and tied up several jump balls while outscoring the host Titans 25-9 in the final stanza.

“I think they finally took the lid off the basket for us,” said Berry. “We’ve been having that lid on there for probably about five games now. It kind of came off.”

Sand Springs has now won four in a row since a disappointing 1-2 performance at the Putnam City Invitational two weeks ago.

The girls won 63-52 against Del City (6-8) in the first game, leading only 39-38 early in the fourth before pulling away down the stretch.

“The fourth quarter is always like a win or go home moment,” said Wilson. “Go hard or go home.”

The senior guard scored a game-high 20 points with 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists in the win. Hope Bump added 14 points and Taiona Morris had 10.

In the semifinals they won a 58-54 overtime battle with No. 5 Edmond Memorial (12-2) in a preview of a looming district battle.

After taking a 24-20 lead into the locker room, the Lady Sandites led for the entire second half until Addy Johnson scored off back-to-back steals to tie it up at 50-50 on the final drive.

Wilson was on fire in overtime, scoring the first three buckets for the Sandites to lead 56-53. The teams traded free throws from there but the Bulldogs were unable to close the gap a second time.

Wilson ended the game with a career-best 32 points, 5 boards, 2 steals, and 5 assists, followed by Bump with 10 points and 7 rebounds.

In Saturday’s finals the Sandites jumped out to a 9-2 lead against the Titans before surrendering an 11-0 run.

“I think we messed up, especially early on, on our assignments,” said Berry. “But, at the end of the day, I think that fourth quarter and end of the third quarter, they played hard. That’s all we asked them was just give us everything you got whenever you’re out there, and I believe they did that.”

A pair of free throws from Simone gave the Sandites a 15-14 lead to enter the second quarter but a five-point run from Jakary Brown put the Titans back on top 24-22 at halftime.

The teams traded blows to open the second half before Bump took a spill in the paint and hit her head. With the junior forward out of the game, the Titans went on a 10-2 run for their biggest lead at 40-31.

“When she hit her head, I heard somebody on the sideline say ‘oh, she woke up now,’” said Berry. “I’m not saying it’s a good thing, but after that, she responded and played the way that we know she can play.”

Bump drained a three shortly after reentering the game to break up the Titans’ run and scored five points in the fourth quarter to go with some aggressive defense.

“Our mindset was just go, go go,” said Wilson. “The more we speed them up, the more they turn over the ball and that’s in our advantage.”

Wilson ended the game with 18 points, 3 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals, while Morris matched her career-high with 17 points, 4 boards, and 3 steals. Bump added a season-best 14 points and 8 rebounds. All three were named to the all-tournament team.

Wilson was named the tournament’s MVP after averaging 23.3 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3.3 steals per game.

“It takes everybody, not just me, but everybody coming together - playing hard and guarding everybody how we’re supposed to guard and executing everything,” said Wilson.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a district road game at Union (8-6, 3-2). The Lady Sandites are 4-1 for third place in district play while the RedHawks are fourth.

Sand Springs football downs Del City on the road 21-17, Pennington sets another record

This story was originally written for the Tulsa World.

Any coach will tell you, when it comes to the playoffs, your record doesn’t matter. What matters is going 1-0 every week.

The No. 6 Sand Springs football team (8-3) is 1-0 for the second straight year after taking down No. 4 Del City (9-2) on the road, and will get a familiar opponent next week.

The Sandites’ 21-17 upset of the District One Champions will put them on neutral territory against No. 7 Edmond Deer Creek (9-2) who they beat 34-29 in last season’s playoffs. The Antlers pulled off a 36-29 upset of their own against No. 2 Choctaw (8-3).

“We’re just on a mission, we’re highly favored,” said Sandites head coach Bobby Klinck. “What an unbelievable football team Del City has. Hard-nosed kids. What a good job the coaches have done over here, but man that’s a big one.”

The Eagles took to the ground for most of the game, and drove 51 yards on their opening possession before Dominic Ornelas made a third-down tackle for loss in the red zone to force a 31-yard field goal from Stanley Johnson.

The Sandites responded three plays later with a 79-yard touchdown pass from Ty Pennington to Brody Rutledge, and the score stayed 7-3 till the fourth quarter.

The Eagles took the lead twice in the final stanza, once on a five-yard plunge by quarterback Virgil Yates, and once on a 55-yard breakaway run by Ethan Lawrence.

But both times, the Sandites responded. Pennington put the Sandites up 14-10 with a 40-yard pass to Keaton Campbell, then took the final lead at 21-17 on a two-yard run, pushed from behind by his O-line.

The third quarter started on a sour note after the heavily recruited Kanijal Thomas picked off Pennington in the end zone, but that didn’t get the star quarterback down.

“I just try to focus on my next drive after a mistake like that and just don’t look back on it,” said Pennington.

In the fourth quarter alone, he was 5-of-5 passing for 95 yards and ran the ball 11 times for 34 yards.

“Why wouldn’t I put it in the best quarterback in the state’s hands right there,” asked Klinck. “There’s not another guy in the locker room who wanted it anywhere else. He proved again he’s the best quarterback in the whole frickin state and we’re going to ride that dude.”

Pennington ended the night 13-of-20 passing for 221 yards, setting the school’s single season passing record unofficially at 2,532 yards. He already holds the school records in career passing yardage, career passing touchdowns, single season passing touchdowns, and career total touchdowns.

Always humble though, Pennington always has more to say about his receivers and his linemen than about himself.

“Man, there is no better feeling. That’s the greatest feeling in the world. I just trust my guys that they’re going to do the right thing, I trust what my coaches are telling me, and I trust my guys to go make the plays.”

“Any game could possibly be the last time I play with these dudes and I’ve played with them a whole lot so it’s definitely a motivation.”

The Sandite defense was clutch against an Eagle unit that averaged 40 points per game coming into the night. Drake Fain tallied 12 tackles and Brooks Dudley had 11 as the Sandites forced two punts and two turnovers on downs.

“We had to stop the run,” said Klinck. “We had to commit to it, and we had to trust our secondary when they took shots to make a play.”

“We have unbelievable players, unbelievable coaches. We’ve got great players in Sand Springs. We are not good coaches without great players. It’s all about those dang kids and the effort and the heart they give.”

Rutledge was 4-121 receiving and Campbell was 3-51. Blake Jones had 16 carries for 44 yards for the Sandites, and Jonathan Daniels was 3-of-3 on PATs. Click here to view the full statistics.

CPHS Football Preview: Sandites travel to Del City for playoffs

For the second consecutive year the Sandites are headed to the playoffs, but despite a better season than last year they’ll have a tougher first-round opponent.

While the Sandites benefited from a bizarre COVID season last year that allowed them to host a fifth-seed Deer Creek in an extra playoff round, this time around they’ll play their first game on the road at District Champion Del City in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

In honor of Veterans Day, all veterans, either active duty, retired, reserve, or national guard, will receive free admission to the first round of the playoffs with free admission for one guest as well. Veterans must have either a Military ID card or driver’s license showing proof of military status.

The game will also utilize the GoFan Electronic Ticket process, with tickets priced at $8.35. Cash admission will be $10 per person. School-aged children and above will need to purchase a ticket but children ages three and younger are admitted free of charge.

The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. at Robert Kalsu Stadium at 1900 S. Sunnylane Rd, Del City, OK 73115. Formerly known as Eagles Stadium, it was rededicated in 2020 following a $17 million renovation.

The game will be livestreamed by Del City on the Oklahoma Sports Network.

The winner of the game will play the winner of No. 2 Choctaw (8-2) vs. No. 7 Deer Creek (8-2). On the other side of the bracket are No. 1 Bixby (10-0) vs. No. 8 Putnam City North (5-5) and No. 3 Booker T. Washington (8-2) vs. No. 5 Stillwater (8-2).

Sand Springs

The Sandites are in their second year under Head Coach Bobby Klinck, who holds an all-time coaching record of 27-20. While Sand Springs was a perennial playoff contender from 2012 to 2017, they hit a rough patch of three losing seasons before Klinck’s arrival spurred them from 2-8 in 2019 to 7-5 last year.

In the season opener they beat archrival Sapulpa 53-26, then they easily handled Bishop Kelley 34-13. Against defending Arkansas 4A State Champion Shiloh Christian they had to come from behind in a 40-33 shootout. In district action they won 30-13 against Ponca City and 48-34 against Muskogee before falling 37-32 to Booker T. Washington, 58-14 to Bixby and 41-28 to Choctaw.

The Sandites snapped the losing streak 41-20 at Bartlesville after jumping out to a 41-0 lead before sending in the backups. They then rolled Putnam City West 44-7, once again getting a first-team shutout before allowing the Patriots on the board in the final minutes.

“Definitely satisfied, glad we’re healthy, glad we were able to make some explosive plays,” Klinck said after the last game. “Little disappointed in the personal foul, that was a point of emphasis last week, so we need to do better because next week in Del City those are going to really hurt us. But all in all, happy for the win, happy for the seniors, but we’ve got a lot left to play for.”

As for the Eagles… “They do a really good job of running the football and then defensively they’re very sound, so we’ve got our work cut out for us,” said Klinck. “It’s going to be a physical football game, so we’ve got to bring our lunch pail and come ready to go.”

Del City

The Eagles are in their first season under head coach Robert Jones, who spent the previous four years as defensive coordinator. He is the fourth head coach in the past seven years for Del City, who has historically been an above average team in the class.

Del City went 4-6 last year, but that was their first losing record since 2011. Three of those losses were by a touchdown or less, and four were non-district. Every loss came to a playoff-bound team, and the Eagles themselves went 1-1 in the playoffs with a 41-7 trouncing of Ponca City before falling 63-27 to State Champion Bixby.

After six years at 5A, the Eagles moved up to 6A-II in 2018 and are 29-14 since then.

This year, the Eagles lost their season opener 39-26 to No. 3 Booker T. Washington, but have won out since then despite some close scares that included three overtime trips.

They won 52-20 at Carl Albert, 27-21 against Bishop McGuiness in overtime, 62-0 against Northwest Classen, 30-7 at Stillwater, 27-6 against Midwest City, 20-14 at Putnam City North in overtime, 35-28 at Deer Creek in overtime, 59-7 at U.S. Grant, and 62-35 at Lawton.

Jaylin Sweet (Jr. WR/CB) is 13-234 receiving with 2 TDs and has 4 interceptions.

Kanijal Thomas (Jr. WR/CB) is 6-158 receiving with 2 TDs and has 46 tackles. A three-star recruit according to 247Sports, Thomas has offers from Iowa State, Kansas, Memphis, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech.

Darius Hampton (Sr. DE) has 72 tackles, 33 tackles for loss, 18.5 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles.

Brian Stocker (Sr. MLB) has 67 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

Aaron Carter (So. MLB) has 58 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and a fumble recovery.

Jaedon Foreman (Jr. DE) has 31 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks.

Braelon Adamah (So. FS) has 50 tackles and 4 interceptions.

Sandites roll Patriots 44-7 on Senior Night, Jones scores 3 TDs

A version of this story was originally written for the Tulsa World.

Senior Night at Memorial Stadium was all about recognizing the 23 football players who have spent four years building a huge legacy in Sand Springs, but head coach Bobby Klinck wasn’t yet ready to talk legacy after the game.

“Some coaches and some players are getting a little bit nostalgic or whatever, but we’ve got a lot left to play for,” said Klinck. “So you know, once the season’s truly over, maybe I’ll look back and see that, but their legacy is not done yet.”

Instead, it’s all eyes on the playoffs.

Class 6A-II No. 6 Charles Page High School (7-3, 4-3) rolled to an easy 44-7 district win over an outclassed Putnam City West (0-10, 0-7), dealing the Patriots their 34th consecutive loss.

The game marked the final time that many of the players would compete on their home turf and served as a tune-up before the Sandites travel to No. 4 Del City (9-1) next week.

Sand Springs took a 31-0 lead into the half and sent in the backups in the fourth quarter with a 44-0 advantage.

Ty Pennington was 18-of-22 passing for 293 yards and two touchdowns, and added a third score on the ground.

Jacob Blevins had eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Brody Rutledge caught three passes for 74 yards and the first score of the game.

Blake Jones saw his most productive game since suffering a mild injury four weeks ago, and carried the ball 13 times for 63 yards and three touchdowns. His second score of the night came with a helpful push from lineman Owen Higgins, who powered him through a handful of defenders for the final few yards.

Kenneth Page racked up 100 yards on the ground, mostly in the fourth quarter, to lead the team’s seven rushers.

Jonathan Daniels handled most of the kicking duties, going four-for-four on extra points, and added a 35-yard field goal to end the first half. Logan Wolfe also kicked a PAT for the Sandites.

Defensively the team was led by Conner Light with eight tackles and two sacks. Alex Turner forced a fumble that Jabe Schlehuber recovered, and Drake Fain had an interception.

The Patriots struggled in most aspects of the game, but had an ace up their sleeve in three-star Baylor-commit Corey Gordon, who had eight catches for 223 yards, and a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

“Definitely satisfied, glad we’re healthy, glad we were able to make some explosive plays,” said Klinck. “Little disappointed in the personal foul, that was a point of emphasis last week, so we need to do better because next week in Del City those are going to really hurt us. But all in all, happy for the win, happy for the seniors, but we’ve got a lot left to play for.”

This season marks the Sandites’ second winning record and second postseason trip in their two years under Klinck. It’s the team’s first 7-3 regular season finish since 2014 technically, though they would have been 7-2 in 2015 had they not forfeited two wins due to an OSSAA violation.

Next week’s trip to Del City will mark the first ever meeting between the Sandites and Eagles. Del City has won nine consecutive games since a season-opening loss to Booker T. Washington.

“They do a really good job of running the football and then defensively they’re very sound, so we’ve got our work cut out for us,” said Klinck. “It’s going to be a physical football game, so we’ve got to bring our lunch pail and come ready to go.”

The Charles Page High School football team will enter a new era in 2020 under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Bobby Klinck, replacing Dustin Kinard who led the Sandites for thirteen years. The new season will also feature some new teams on the schedule, following the release of new District assignments from the state’s governing athletic board.

The OSSAA released its district football assignments Wednesday afternoon, and Sand Springs will see five familiar faces and two newcomers in District 2. Bartlesville, Bixby, Booker T. Washington, Muskogee, Ponca City, and Sand Springs will remain. Shawnee and Sapulpa are dropping to 5A. Choctaw and Putnam City West are moving over from District 1.

Deer Creek, Del City, Lawton, Midwest City, and Stillwater are all returning to District 1. In addition to losing Choctaw and Putnam West to District 2, they’re also losing Putnam City to 6A Division 1. Putnam City North will drop from 6A-1, Northwest Classen will move up from 5A, and U.S. Grant is rejoining OSSAA competition after a six-year hiatus.

Northwest Classen was 1-6 for seventh place in District 5A-2 and 3-7 overall. They were 2-8 on the field for their best mark since 2016, then received a third win when their final loss was overturned by a forfeit.

U.S. Grant got a six-year pardon from OSSAA competition to try and rebuild their program from the ground up. They are rejoining the league after going 6-3 on an independent schedule for their first winning record since 1998.

District 2

Bixby went 7-0 in District 2 for their second-straight district title, and have won 25-straight games for their second-straight State title.

Muskogee was 5-2 for second place in District 2 and were 8-3 overall for their third winning season in the past four years.

Choctaw went 5-2 for third place in District 1 last year and were 8-4 overall for their best mark and first post-season win since at least 2004.

Booker T. Washington went 5-2 for third place in District 2 and were 6-5 overall for their eighth-straight winning season.

Ponca City was 3-4 for fifth place in District 2 and 5-5 overall for their best record since 2005.
