The Charles Page High School basketball program held its annual Meet the Sandites celebration Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. Boys and Girls teams from 7th Grade through Varsity were introduced to fans, along with games and performances from the junior high and varsity Cheer teams.

Boys’ Head Coach Eric Savage received a pie in the face from Girls’ Head Coach Joshua Berry after the girls won a contest selling tailgate tickets at a recent football game.

The Sandite Basketball season will officially kick off Tuesday, November 26th with a home game. Junior Varsity Girls will start the night at 4:00 p.m. against Ponca City, followed by JV Boys, Varsity Girls, and Varsity Boys.

Sandite Alumni Report: Holly Kersgieter named Big 12 Player of the Week

Charles Page High School Class of 2019 graduate Holly Kersgieter picked up Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, and Freshman of the Week honors following her collegiate debut with the University of Kansas Women’s Basketball Team (2-0) this past weekend.

Kansas kicked off the season with an 84-72 non-conference home win against Indiana State (1-1) Thursday evening, led by Kersgieter with 24 points and 10 rebounds in her college debut.

Kersgieter was the second player on the board, driving through triple coverage for a layup and a 4-0 lead, setting the tone of her performance to come.

The former Sandite All-State performer was 8-of-14 on field goals, 4-of-7 from three point range, and 4-of-8 from the charity stripe with 5 offensive rebounds, 4 defensive rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, and 2 steals.

Next up for Kansas was a dominant 91-50 beatdown of the University of Chicago at Illinois (0-3). In that game Kersgieter put up 8 points, 3 assists, 1 steal, 2 offensive rebounds, and 5 defensive rebounds while shooting 3-of-6 on field goals and 2-of-2 on free throws.

The Jayhawks are coming off a 13-18 season with a 2-16 conference mark under now fourth-year head coach Brandon Schneider. They were picked to finish last in the ten-team Big 12 Conference in last month’s preseason coaches’ poll.

Kansas will return to action Wednesday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. with a home game against Omaha (1-2).

University of Tulsa (1-1) freshman Destiny Johnson didn’t see any action in the Hurricane’s season-opening 67-63 loss to Stephen F. Austin State University (2-0), but played five minutes of a 79-77 win over Arkansas State (1-1). The Sandite was 1-of-2 on free throws for 1 point, 1 steal, and 1 assist. She did not make any field goal attempts.

Northeastern State University (0-2) started the season with a 71-59 loss to Northwestern Oklahoma (1-1) and a 51-39 loss to the University of Mary (2-3). Freshman Isabella Regalado has yet to make her collegiate debut.

Men’s Basketball

The University of Central Oklahoma (0-2) went down 64-56 to the University of Mary (1-1) in overtime on Friday, then fell 63-55 to Northwestern Oklahoma State (1-1).

Sophomore Colt Savage only played 7 minutes in the season debut, collecting two defensive rebounds and going 0-of-1 in the field. He saw far more action on Saturday, going 2-of-6 on field goals and 4-of-6 at the stripe for 8 points and 1 defensive rebound.

The Bronchos will travel to Oklahoma Christian (0-0) Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before playing William Jewel (1-1) and Upper Iowa (1-1) this weekend at the Fairfield Inn Classic in Warrensburg, Missouri.

UCO also picked up a recent commitment from Charles Page senior standout Davon Richardson, who averaged 15.7 points and 8.4 rebounds in his junior year. Richardson will officially sign a letter of intent Wednesday morning.

Class of 2019 signs 23 college letters of intent

Nine more athletes from the Charles Page High School Class of 2019 signed collegiate letters of intent recently, bringing the school’s grand total to 23 thus far. Six baseball players, five softball players, four track and field athletes, three basketball players, two football players, one wrestler, one cheerleader, and one tennis player are headed to the next level.

Riley Weir signed to wrestle with Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami. The community college competes in the NJCAA and owns three team National Titles. They finished last season second in the National Tournament under Head Coach Joe Renfro (174-34-3).

Weir missed the post-season of his senior year due to injury, but finished his high school career as a two-time State Champion with a 108-34 record, 49 pins, 10 technical falls, and 16 major decisions. He also holds the school record for fastest technical fall at 1:48.

Aden Baughman signed with the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs and will compete at the NCAA Division I level in track and field and cross country in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons placed fourth at their recent Conference meet

Baughman holds twenty individual titles, including two 6A State Championships in the 800-meter run. He holds personal records of 49.12 in the 300 hurdles, 50.13 in the 400 dash, 1:53.16 in the 800, 4:30.42 in the 1600, and 10:48.89 in the 3200.

Mitchell Mefford signed with the Oral Roberts University Track and Field Team and will be throwing Discus and Shot Put. Mefford ended his high school career with four Discus titles, including the 6A State Championship, and a personal best mark of 159’01.00”. In Shot Put his PR is 41’10.50.”

ORU is a private university in Tulsa, competing at the NCAA Division I level in the Summit League conference. The men’s team placed fourth in this season’s Conference Meet. They are led by Joe Dial in 24th year as Head Coach.

Jacob Smith signed with Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Smith will run track and cross country with the Bees, competing in the NAIA Sun Conference. Smith holds a 3200 meter PR of 10:22.07 and a 1600 PR of 4:39.94. He holds two individual track titles.

Sara Abbet signed with the track and cross country teams at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma. Abbet holds personal records of 3:12.32 in the 800, 6:28.9 in the 1600, 13:49.23 in the 3200, and 23:21.6 in the 5K. SNU is led by 15th-year Head Coach Billy Miller and competes at the NCAA Division 2 level in the Great American Conference.

Ben Banker signed with the Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team, joining teammates John Miller and Tyler Ash, who signed earlier this year. Banker finished his high school pitching career with a 2.03 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 7-2 record in 51.2 innings.

EOSC is a public community college in Wilburton competing in the NJCAA. Matt Parker (349-133) took the reigns this year after seven winning seasons at Oklahoma Wesleyan. The Mountaineers just finished the season with a 24-22 record, falling in the first round of the Region Two playoffs.

Abbie White signed with the Northern Oklahoma College Cheer team. NOC is a public community college in Tonkawa. The Mavericks are coached by Karri Morrill in her twelfth season. In February they won the Small Two-Year College Co-Ed Title at the United Spirit Association Collegiate Championships in Anaheim, California.

JT Bristow recently signed to play football at Lyon College. Lyon is a private Presbyterian college in Batesville, Arkansas, competing in the NAIA and American Midwest Conference. The Scots went 4-7 last season under first-year head coach Casey Creehan. Primarily an offensive lineman, Bristow also recorded 22 tackles and one offensive fumble recovery last season.

Logan Bateman recently signed with the Oklahoma Baptist University tennis team. Bateman is a #1 Singles State Qualifier, with a season-best performance of second place at the Bartlesville Invitational. OBU is a private NCAA Division Two university in Shawnee, competing in the Great American Conference. The Bison went 6-13 this season in duals, led by first-year head coach Jason Proctor.

OCA Basketball: Johnson, Kersgieter, Savage, and Durkee receive All-State Honors

The Oklahoma Coaches Association released its list of All-State basketball honorees recently and Sand Springs had several recipients. The organization only recognizes seniors.

Destiny Johnson and Holly Kersgieter both made the All-State Girls team, while Cole Durkee and Cale Savage received Class 6A All-Star status. The All-Star honor recognizes top-players from each classification, while the All-State team is the absolute cream of the crop.

Johnson, a University of Tulsa-commit, was also named to the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-State Team, and the Frontier Valley All-Conference First Team, and was named the FVC Defensive Player of the Year. Johnson shot 48.3% in the field and 75.9% on free throws this season, averaging 16.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.8 steals per game. She scored 1,315 points in her career.

Kersgieter, a University of Kansas-commit, was also named to the OGBCA All-State Girls Team and FVC All-Conference First Team. Kersgieter shot 46.5% in the field and 76.1% at the charity stripe, averaging 19.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. She finished her career with 1,406 points.

Savage, a Northern Oklahoma College Baseball-commit, also made the FVC Third Team. Savage shot 45.7% in the field and 78.5% at the stripe, averaging 12.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. He totaled 650 points in his career.

Durkee shot 43.7% in the field and 66.7% at the stripe, averaging 4.1 rebounds and 8.7 points per game. He scored 484 points in his career.

The girls will play in the OCA All-State game July 24th at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center at 8:30 p.m. They will also play in the OGBCA All-State game June 1st at 1:00 p.m. at Norman North High School.

CPHS Basketball: Richardson, Kersgieter, Johnson named to All-Conference First Team

The Frontier Valley Conference recently announced its All-Conference accolades for the 2018-2019 basketball season and Sand Springs was well represented.

University of Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson and University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter were both named to the All-Conference First Team. Johnson was also named Defensive Player of the Year. Northeastern State University-commit Isabella Regalado received an honorable mention. All three Lady Sandites are seniors.

Johnson and Kersgieter were also recently named to the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-State Team.

On the boys side, junior standout Davon Richardson was a First Team selection and Northern Oklahoma College Baseball-commit Cale Savage made the Third Team. Also on the third team was Jenks senior Peyton Golightly, who played for Sand Springs his sophomore year.

Johnson shot 48.3% in the field and 75.9% on free throws this season, averaging 16.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.8 steals per game. She scored 1,315 points in her career.

Kersgieter shot 46.5% in the field and 76.1% at the charity stripe, averaging 19.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.0 steals per game. She finished her career with 1,406 points.

Regalado shot 32.1% in the field and 72.0% from the stripe, averaging 7.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. She scored 695 career points.

Richardson shot 48.9% in the field and 69.2% at the free throw line, averaging 15.7 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.1 blocks per game. His career scoring total stands at 718.

Savage shot 45.7% in the field and 78.5% at the stripe, averaging 12.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. He totaled 650 points in his career.

The Charles Page girls won their second FVC Championship in the past three years with a perfect 14-0 conference record. The boys went 9-5 for fourth place.

CPHS Basketball: Johnson and Kersgieter named to OGBCA All-State team

Two Charles Page High School seniors received All-State accolades this week for their performance on the basketball court. Destiny Johnson and Holly Kersgieter were named to the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association Large-East All-State team. They will play Saturday, June 1st, at 1:00 p.m. at Norman North High School.

Kersgieter and Johnson were both four-year starters for the Sandites, winning three Bishop Kelley Invitational Tournaments, two Interstate Classic Tournaments, two Frontier Valley Conference Championships, three Regional Championships, and three Area Championships.

Kersgieter scored 1,406 points in her career and averaged 19.2 this season. She shot 46.5% in the field, 76.1% from the free throw line, and averaged 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2 steals per game. She will continue her career at the University of Kansas.

Johnson scored 1,315 career points and averaged 16.6 as a senior. This season she shot 48.3% in the field, 75.9% at the stripe, and averaged 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.8 steals per game. She will play collegiate ball at the University of Tulsa.

The OGBCA announced five Hall of Fame inductees and eight individual award winners. Darlene Calip, Jay Wood, Annette Kennedy, Mark Hudson, and Wade Daniel will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony on the Friday before the All State games.

Calip has led the Sapulpa program to a 224-128 (.636) record in fourteen seasons with nine winning records, five State Tournament appearances, two Finals appearances, and one State Championship.

Wood spent the last four years at Kingfisher, going 57-51 (.528). In his 24-year career he has taken five teams to the State Tournament and won a State Title in 2015 at Thomas.

Kennedy took the Booker T. Washington Hornets to twelve State Tournaments, three Championship wins, and a 379-129 (.746) record in nineteen seasons.

Hudson is a past President of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Board of Directors. He coached boys and girls basketball as well as slow pitch softball at Preston before being named Superintendent in 2000. He amassed a 651-271 (.706) record as a basketball coach with one girls’ State Title, and three slow pitch State Titles.

Daniel never won a State Title, but led the Kiowa team to eight State Tournament appearances and seven Pittsburg Eight Conference with a 425-242 (.637) record.

Smithville’s Shermon Southard and Cashion’s Totsy Manning will be presented with Charles K. Heatly Awards.

Scott Winfield was named East Coach of the Year for leading Adair to a 3A State Title and 21-10 record.

Jeff Zinn was named the West Coach of the Year and Katie Cantrell will receive Assistant Coach of the Year honors. The two coached Anadarko to a 4A State Title and 27-3 record.

Clay Plunk will receive the East Assistant of the Year award for helping Latta to a 2A State Semifinals appearance.

Dale’s Scott Wilson and Weatherford’s Shelly Pond were named the Junior High Coaches of the Year.
