CPHS Basketball: Johnson and Kersgieter named to OGBCA All-State team

Two Charles Page High School seniors received All-State accolades this week for their performance on the basketball court. Destiny Johnson and Holly Kersgieter were named to the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association Large-East All-State team. They will play Saturday, June 1st, at 1:00 p.m. at Norman North High School.

Kersgieter and Johnson were both four-year starters for the Sandites, winning three Bishop Kelley Invitational Tournaments, two Interstate Classic Tournaments, two Frontier Valley Conference Championships, three Regional Championships, and three Area Championships.

Kersgieter scored 1,406 points in her career and averaged 19.2 this season. She shot 46.5% in the field, 76.1% from the free throw line, and averaged 9.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2 steals per game. She will continue her career at the University of Kansas.

Johnson scored 1,315 career points and averaged 16.6 as a senior. This season she shot 48.3% in the field, 75.9% at the stripe, and averaged 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.8 steals per game. She will play collegiate ball at the University of Tulsa.

The OGBCA announced five Hall of Fame inductees and eight individual award winners. Darlene Calip, Jay Wood, Annette Kennedy, Mark Hudson, and Wade Daniel will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony on the Friday before the All State games.

Calip has led the Sapulpa program to a 224-128 (.636) record in fourteen seasons with nine winning records, five State Tournament appearances, two Finals appearances, and one State Championship.

Wood spent the last four years at Kingfisher, going 57-51 (.528). In his 24-year career he has taken five teams to the State Tournament and won a State Title in 2015 at Thomas.

Kennedy took the Booker T. Washington Hornets to twelve State Tournaments, three Championship wins, and a 379-129 (.746) record in nineteen seasons.

Hudson is a past President of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association Board of Directors. He coached boys and girls basketball as well as slow pitch softball at Preston before being named Superintendent in 2000. He amassed a 651-271 (.706) record as a basketball coach with one girls’ State Title, and three slow pitch State Titles.

Daniel never won a State Title, but led the Kiowa team to eight State Tournament appearances and seven Pittsburg Eight Conference with a 425-242 (.637) record.

Smithville’s Shermon Southard and Cashion’s Totsy Manning will be presented with Charles K. Heatly Awards.

Scott Winfield was named East Coach of the Year for leading Adair to a 3A State Title and 21-10 record.

Jeff Zinn was named the West Coach of the Year and Katie Cantrell will receive Assistant Coach of the Year honors. The two coached Anadarko to a 4A State Title and 27-3 record.

Clay Plunk will receive the East Assistant of the Year award for helping Latta to a 2A State Semifinals appearance.

Dale’s Scott Wilson and Weatherford’s Shelly Pond were named the Junior High Coaches of the Year.
