Spring sports have arrived in Sand Springs, with soccer, baseball, and track kicking off their seasons this past week. Both varsity soccer teams recorded wins to start the season. The boys won 3-2 against Glenpool on Tuesday, and the girls won 5-0 against Muskogee on Friday.

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team (9-7) is now 3-1 against Broken Arrow (6-8) in their two seasons under Head Coach Josh Berry, picking up a 40-38 Frontier Valley Conference win Tuesday night at Tiger Field House. But just like all three games last year, it was close from start to finish. All four meetings have been decided by five points or less.
The Lady Sandites trailed only once in the game, after Taleyah Jones put up the opening bucket. Freshman star Sakauri Wilson scored on a steal to tie it, then Darrian Jordan sank a three for the lead and they never gave it up. Jordan scored through contact to add a conventional three, then Layne Kirkendoll made it 10-3 before the Tigers came roaring back.
Broken Arrow made it a one-point game twice in the first quarter and they were only down 12-11 when Leyshia Morris drilled a three to end the quarter. Mikah Hampton scored a putback and Hailey Jackson made buckets on back-to-back possessions to win the second quarter 6-0 and took a ten point lead into the locker room.
The home team won the second half 27-19 but couldn’t quite erase their scoreless second stanza. The Sandites were short one starter for almost the entire half after Kirkendoll fouled out on a technical early in the third, and without her height the Sandites lost the rebound battle significantly. The Tigers made it a one-score game five times in the fourth quarter but the Sandites made just enough plays to stay alive.
Jones led all scorers with 19 points and was the only Tiger in double digits. Jordan scored 11 to lead the Sandites for the second time this season, followed by Jackson with nine. Journey Armstead, playing through a recovering injury, was held to a career-low four points - but her fellow Sandites stepped up to the occasion with one of their most balanced team efforts of the season.
The Sandite boys are in a bit of a tough spot, unranked and coming off their worst loss since 2016. No. 10 Broken Arrow (11-5) rolled to an 82-50 conference win Tuesday night on the home court for their fifth-straight in league play. The Tigers improved to 5-2 in the Frontier Valley while Sand Springs dropped to 1-6 and 5-8 overall.
6’5” junior forward Anthony Allen singlehandedly gave his team a 6-0 lead en route to a team-high 21 points for the Tigers, who never trailed and led 23-8 by the end of the first period and 42-24 at the half. Senior first-year starter Corbin Fisher put up a career-high 22 points to lead all scorers, but was the only Sandite in double digits. The Tigers had four double-digit scorers, including Simon Blair who had 18 off the bench.
Broken Arrow was the most accurate team the Sandites have played all season, shooting 62% in the field and 10-of-17 on three-pointers.
Sand Springs basketball is scheduled to host the Northeast Oklahoma Association of Home Schools (NOAH) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in non-conference play, followed by Bartlesville Friday.

The Class 6A No. 15 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team is 2-0 for the fourth straight year after escaping Inola (0-2) in the first round of the Jerry O’Quin Tournament Monday night. The Sandites beat the home team 56-44 after holding the Longhorns to only three points in the third quarter.
Inola played a close, streaky game against the Sandites and led 24-22 at halftime. The Sandites needed back-to-back threes from Marlo Fox to take their first lead at 8-4, and the senior star added two free throws and a layup to tie it at 12-12 before the first buzzer. He added five more points in the second quarter, aided by a layup from Daren Hawkins and a free throw from Trevor Stone to lead 20-12 before Caden Thomas and the home team stormed back to take the lead.
The game tied again at 26-26 before a putback from Ethan Oakley gave the visitors the lead for good. Sand Springs scored 16-straight points and had their biggest advantage at 47-29 before the Longhorns rattled off ten in a row to try and battle back.
Fox finished the game with a career-high 28 points, including five three-pointers, along with six rebounds and three steals. Jason Clark was the only other Sandite in double digits, with 11 points. Inola had three players in double digits. Norman led his team with 11 points, followed by Thomas and Garrett Cummins with ten each.
Sandite Basketball will open up Frontier Valley Conference play Tuesday evening at Bartlesville (0-1, 0-1). The boys will return to Inola Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for the tournament semifinals. Inola will play in the consolation semifinals Friday at 8:30 p.m.

March 26, 2020—1:30 p.m.—On March 25, the State Superintendent announced that all public schools would remain closed until the end of the academic year for each respective public school. The academic year for schools will end between May 8 and May 15.
In conjunction with this decision the OSSAA Board voted unanimously, at the March 26, 2020 Teleconference Board Meeting, to cancel the State Basketball Tournament for Classes 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A; additionally, all spring activities have been cancelled for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
For the purpose of all OSSAA member school activities, all school personnel, including certified, adjunct or volunteer coaches, as well as teachers, directors, or instructors are prohibited from engaging in any type of OSSAA member school activity involving secondary students; no practice, instruction, training, weight lifting, tryouts, competition or travel is permitted.
SUMMER TIME ACTIVITIES: Until further notice, no OSSAA member school activities will be permitted. The timeline for the beginning of summer activities will be provided to member schools at a time when CDC recommendations as well as State and Local government recommendations allow for safe participation.

The Charles Page High School girls’ basketball team is filled with fresh blood, both on the bench and on the coaching staff. One of the most successful Sandite programs in recent years, the girls are coming off a 21-5 season and undefeated conference mark under Tobey Nightingale, who moved out of state after her lone season at the helm.
Now taking the reigns is Joshua Berry, the former boys’ head coach at Muskogee. In seven seasons Berry led the Roughers to a 76-90 record, but was 74-70 prior to his final year.
Just seven years ago the Lady Sandites went 3-42 over two seasons and were winless in the Frontier Valley Conference. Then came a program rebuild led by Dustin Morrow, who took his alma mater to three winning records in five seasons, and began a tradition of success.
Three straight Regional Championships. Three straight Area Championships. Two Conference Championships in the past three years. Six regular-season tournament titles in the past five years. Not all of that success can be credited to the coaches, however. Morrow and Nightingale were blessed with a wealth of Division 1 talent.
Both coaches had the benefit of leading a unit with Northeastern State University’s Isabella Regalado, University of Tulsa-bound Destiny Johnson, and the University of Kansas’s Holly Kersgieter, who recently picked up Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Morrow also had Gloria Mutiri, who is a starter on the Kansas State University volleyball team, and both had Jacie Taber, who is a freshman on the Missouri State University softball team.
Coach Berry will have a tough task in front of him, rebuilding a team that graduated 75% of its scoring power and 69% of its defense (rebounds/blocks/steals). Fortunately, the team has run a deep bench in recent years, and he has ten returners with varsity experience, as well as two starters. He also has an ace in the hole: a young move-in with a bright future.
Coaching Staff
Joshua Berry coached the Muskogee boys to a 76-90 record, but was 74-70 prior to his final year. He led the Roughers to three straight winning seasons from 2013-2017, including one State Tournament berth, but was dismissed after a 2-20 mark last year. Before joining Muskogee he was an Assistant Women’s Coach at Independence Community College in Kansas, then was Girl’s Head Coach at Will Rogers High School in Tulsa from 2010-2012. In his two seasons with the Ropers he went 14-11 and 8-12 with one State Tournament appearance, and was named All-Metro Coach of the Year in 2011. As a player, Berry was on the Booker T. Washington team that took state in 2002.
Yukon native Brad Mallam is in his second season with the Sandites. Mallam spent eight years in El Reno in various roles: 8th Grade Boys, Freshman Boys, and Varsity Boys’ Assistant. He went 4-44 as Head Boys’ Coach at Elgin from 2012-2014, then returned to El Reno. As the Girls’ Interim Head Coach from 2015-2016, Mallam led the Indians to a 13-13 mark and Area Tournament appearance.
Jordan Evans is in her first year with the Sandites. She was an All-Conference selection from Daniel Webster High School, where she helped the Warriors to a historic 21-9 mark in the 2011-2012 season. Coincidentally, her last high school game was the Area Consolation playoff, which was held at Sand Springs’s Ed Dubie Field House. She played collegiate ball for two seasons at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, then finished up at Rogers State University. Evans played in the Women’s Minor League Basketball Association this past year, helping the Oklahoma Warriors to a Championship Finals appearance in the team’s first season.
Terence Buckley has worked as a Physical Education teacher at Tulsa Public Schools’ Unity Learning Academy, and as a basketball coach with We R One Basketball Club.
Returning Players:
5’9” senior Madison Burris started 25 games last year, shooting 35% in the field, 33% on threes, and 53% on free throws. She averaged 4.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.0 steal per game, and scored a career-high 14 points in the Area Championship against Moore.
5’8” junior Raegan Padilla played 25 games and started 12, shooting 31% in the field, 26% from three-point range, and 76% at the charity stripe. She averaged 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds per game, and put up a career-high 14 points against Owasso.
5’8” junior Darrian Jordan played 25 games last year and started 4, shooting 46% in the field and 56% on free throws. She averaged 3.4 points and 2.0 rebounds per game, and scored a career-high 16 points against Muskogee.
5’8” senior McKenzie Harris played 9 games last year and started 1, averaging 1.6 points per outing. She shot 36% in the field and 40% on threes, and scored a career-high 6 points against Muskogee.
5’5” Sophomore Mikah Hampton played 19 games last year, shooting 54% in the field, 33% on threes, and 77% on free throws. She averaged 1.3 points per game, with a career-high 6 points against Ponca City.
5’8” Junior Bayleigh Chaney played 6 games last year, shooting 25% in the field, 20% on threes, and 100% on free throws. She averaged 1.2 points and 1.0 rebound, and scored a career-high 3 points against Broken Arrow.
5’6” junior Jentry Hughes played 12 games last year, shooting 29% in the field and 50% at the stripe for 5 total points, with a career-high of 2.
5’4” senior Jade Shrum played 11 games last season, shooting 13% in the field, 20% on threes, and 20% on free throws. She scored 4 points, including a 3-point performance against Tulsa Memorial.
5’6” junior Haden Brown saw action in 5 games.
Newcomers who could get called up to varsity include 5’9” Alison Day, 5’5” Avery Tanner, Desiree Ramos, Heaven Pahsetopah, Layne Kirkendoll, Abby Hughes, 5’6” Faith Walker, 5’9” Sophia Regalado, and 5’11” Haley Jackson.
Also on the roster is 5’9” sophomore East Central move-in Journey Armstead, who helped her team to a Class 5A State Quarterfinals appearance last year. She averaged 16 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds as a freshman, and put up a career-high 27 against Ponca City.

The Frontier Valley Conference will feature two returning State Tournament teams in Sand Springs and Union. Sand Springs, Union, and Booker T. Washington all won Regional titles, and Bartlesville also made an Area appearance.
Although they went undefeated in conference action, the Sandites struggled with non-conference play last year. The girls lost their season-opener at Ponca City, then failed to win the Bishop Kelley Tournament for the first time in four years and needed overtime in the third-place round.
The girls won ten-straight games before hitting a rough patch at the Moore Tournament, where they took fourth place and lost back-to-back games for the first time in over a year. Those losses motivated another impressive run of eight-straight games that led to a third-straight State Tournament appearance.
This year will see a fifth-straight Bishop Kelley Tournament appearance, where they have seen substantial success. Instead of a return to Moore, they will compete at the Enid Holiday Classic. This will be the first time the boys and girls have played the same tournament since the 2016-2017 season when they traveled to Coffeyville. The last time both teams won the same tournament was the 2014-2015 season.
Sand Springs will have a tough start to the year, with a non-conference debut against Ponca City, who made an Area appearance last year, followed by a battle with last year’s No. 2 team in the conference, Union.

The No. 13 ranked Oklahoma State University Cowgirl Softball team (42-14) won its first Regional Championship since 2011 Saturday afternoon, squeezing out a 2-1 come-from-behind Finals win over No. 25 Tulsa (37-20). The Pokes also won 3-1 against the West Coast Conference Champions from BYU (30-26) and beat Tulsa 13-10 in their first meeting of the tournament.
The Cowgirl roster includes two former Sand Springs standouts in sophomore Sydney Pennington and senior Mallory Goodman.
Pennington played third base throughout the three-game tournament, recording two put outs and eight assists. At the plate she was 2-of-10 with 2 runs and 1 RBI, hitting a solo homer in the top of the second inning in the first game against Tulsa.
Pennington is .250 on the season with 30 runs, 42 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 10 homers, 33 RBI, a .482 slugging average, .314 on-base-percentage, and a .948 fielding average. In her career she’s .277 with 57 runs, 102 hits, 18 doubles, 1 triple, 17 homers, and 76 RBI.
Goodman hasn’t seen any action this season, but she’s .241 in her career with 17 runs, 28 hits, 5 doubles, 3 homers, a .362 slugging average, and .343 on-base-percentage.
The Pokes will return to action Thursday and Friday against the defending National Champions from No. 4 Florida State (54-8) at the Tallahassee Super Regional. Game times are 6:00 p.m. CT Thursday, 2:00 p.m. CT Friday, and 11:00 a.m. CT Saturday (if necessary). Thursday and Saturday’s games will be on ESPN and Friday’s game will be on ESPN2.

Central Christian College senior Breanna Bill batted .271 this season with a .388 slugging average, 23 runs, 35 hits, 4 doubles, 4 triples, 1 home run, 11 RBI, and 8 sacrifices. The Tigers went 16-38 overall and 8-28 in the SAC.
1983 grad Randall King led the Broken Arrow High School Slow Pitch Softball team to a 23-9 record, Class 6A No. 5 ranking, and State Tournament appearance.
2011 grad Joely Rogers finished her first season as Pitching Coach at Coffeyville Community College, helping the Ravens to a 7-34 record.
Sophomore Jessica Collins batted .284 with a .327 on-base percentage, .561 slugging average, 32 runs, 42 hits, 5 doubles, 12 home runs, and 33 RBI at Connors State College as the Cowgirls went 16-31 overall and 11-22 in conference. She went 1-5 on the mound, throwing 5 strikeouts in 34 innings with a 9.34 ERA and .948 fielding percentage.
Northeastern State University went 28-27 overall and 14-12 in conference. Junior Jessica Schuler batted .297 with 29 runs, 47 hits, 33 RBI, 14 doubles, 5 homers, a .481 slugging average, .386 on-base percentage, and a .991 fielding percentage.
Junior Kennedy “Goose” Salyers finished the season .234 at the plate with 5 runs, 11 hits, 1 double, 1 RBI, a .255 slugging average, and a .250 on-base percentage at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The Savage Storm went 29-28 overall and 25-19 in conference.
Baseball
Rhett Rutledge is playing NCAA Division I baseball at Florida International University in his junior year, following a two-year stent at Northern Oklahoma College. He currently owns a .250 batting average and .300 slugging average on the season with five hits, seven runs, and one RBI, with a .905 fielding percentage. The Panthers are 22-29 overall and will return to action Thursday with a three-day three-game home series against Louisiana Tech.
Sophomores Mack Thompson and Treyce Tolbert saw action on a 24-22 Rose State College baseball team, the school’s best record since 2013. Thompson ended the season with a .879 fielding percentage, .337 batting average, .413 on-base percentage, and .402 slugging average, recording 31 hits, 6 doubles, 20 runs, and 16 RBI. Berryhill grad and native Sandite Jacob Bailey is seeing reduced duty with the Seminole State baseball team. He is 1-0 on the mound in 3.2 innings pitched with a 0.0 ERA and 6 strikeouts. Last season he was 6-1 for a 4.14 ERA. Seminole went 39-14 this season.
University of Oklahoma sophomore Jake Terry has pitched two innings this season and thrown one strikeout. His career ERA stands at 7.53. The Sooners are 31-20 overall and 9-12 in Big 12 action. They will play a three-game Red River Rivalry series this week to conclude the regular season.
CPHS Class of 1981 grad Mike Moore is Head Baseball Coach at Jay High School, and recently wrapped up the season with an 18-14 record.
Basketball
University of Central Oklahoma freshman Colt Savage scored 84 points with 25 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for the Men’s Basketball team this past season, helping the Broncos to an 11-17 record. He shot 55.6% on field goals, 50% on three-pointers, and 90% on free throws.
Football
Sophomore Jacob Taber and the Fort Hays State University football team earned their second-straight MIAA Conference Title with a 9-3 overall record and 6-0 undefeated performance on their home turf. Taber played in all twelve games, recording 4 total tackles.
Jerry Lyons didn’t see any action his freshman year at Southwestern College football, but the Moundbuilders finished the season 6-5 overall and 5-5 in conference.
Payton Scott took a redshirt his freshman year at the University of Central Oklahoma, but the football team went 8-4 overall, 7-4 in conference, and won the Heart of Texas Bowl.
Golf
University of Denver golfer Carson Griggs cracked the starting lineup this season as a true freshman and helped his team to a Summit League Conference Championship with a sixth place finish out of 44 golfers. The Pioneers concluded their season Wednesday with a 12th place finish at the NCAA Stanford Regional.
Griggs placed 54th out of 96 at the Ram Masters Invitational, helping his team to a 4th place finish. He was first on his team and 13th out of 100 at the William H. Tucker Invitational. He was second on his team and 31st of 84 at the Bayou City Collegiate Tournament. He placed 30th of 90 at the Ping Cougar Classic, 67th of 75 at Regionals, 68th of 72 at the Paintbrush Invitational, 84th of 112 at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, and 101st of 120 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Classic.
Rowing
University of Oklahoma senior Hannah Hammond was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rowing Team.
Soccer
1991 grad Roger Bush led the Oral Roberts University Women to an 8-12 record. Junior Brooklyn Eardley played eight games and recorded one assist.
1999 grad Ryan Bush led the Oral Roberts University Men to a 6-7-3 record.
2012 grad Tyler McIntosh led the Midwest City Boys to a 2-12 record.
2010 grad Aaron McIntosh led the Mingo Valley Boys to a Heartland Christian Athletic Association Conference Championship in his first year as Head Coach.
Junior Kayla Foster played seven games this past season at Missouri University of Science and Technology, scoring one goal and one assist. The Miners went 4-11-1 overall and 3-9-1 in conference.
Megan Deshazo (sophomore) and Emma Peak (freshman) helped the Northern Oklahoma College (Tonkawa) team to an 8-7-1 overall record and 7-5-1 conference performance this season. Deshazo was named Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year and made the NJCAA All-Region team, leading the team in total scoring with eight goals and three assists. Deshazo is signed to play for Southwestern Christian University next season. Peak scored one goal and two assists.
Oklahoma City University freshman Abigail Banks only got to play one game this season, due to sharing the lineup with an All-Conference goalie. The Stars went 11-3-2 overall and 6-1-1 for second in conference.
Redlands Community College and sophomore Brooklyn Turner went 9-6-2 this season. Turner saw action in twelve games.
Tennis
Assistant Coach Peter McCorkle (C/o 2005) helped the Oral Roberts men’s team to a 6-12
Track and Field
Colby Community College freshman Ian Baustert finished 27th in the 800 meter run at the NJCAA Region VI Track Championships with a time of 2:09.10 last week. Earlier this season he set 4:28.77 PR in the 1500.
Grand Canyon University sophomore Cheyenne Walden finished the season 6th in the 3K Steeplechase in 11:12.13 and 23rd in the 5K run in 18:47.24 at the Western Athletic Conference Championships. Over the course of the season she set PRs of 4:45.56 in the 1500 run, 5:22.13 in the one-mile, 10:17.49 in the 3k, 17:10.40 in the 5K, and 10:54.11 in the 3K Steeple. She also won the NAU Friday Night Duals one-mile run in the season-opener, placed second in the 3K Steeple at the Aztec Invitational, and broke the school’s 5K record.
Volleyball
Kansas State sophomore Gloria Mutiri had a remarkable season this past fall, earning a multitude of accolades. She was twice named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week, made the All-Big 12 Rookie Team, and was a second team All-Big 12 selection. The American Volleyball Coaches Association selected her for the All-Midwest Region First Team, named her Midwest Freshman of the Year, and gave her an All-American Honorable Mention.
Mutiri finished the season with 271 kills, 3 assists, 15 aces, 192 digs, and 67 blocks in 98 sets. The Wildcats went 15-12 overall and 5-11 in Big 12 action. They will be taking a nine-day trip to Brazil later this month to play a series of exhibition matches in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Labette freshman Kylie Taylor recorded 2 assists, 2 aces, and 44 digs in 34 sets, helping the Cardinals to an 8-22 record.
Wrestling
Oklahoma State redshirt freshman Daton Fix won the first 26 matches of his career and went 35-2 overall this season, picking up titles at the Oklahoma City Open, the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Southern Scuffle, and the Big 12 Conference Tournament. His only losses came to All-Americans and he placed second at the NCAA Tournament.
UCO redshirt junior Cody Karstetter went 1-0 in his debut season with the Bronchos, winning an 8-3 decision in a dual with Fort Hays State.
