Laila Mirza Becomes First-Ever Girls Tournament Champion from Sand Springs

Laila Mirza is officially the first ever regular-season tournament champion for the Sand Springs girls wrestling program.

The junior 120 pounder won the Joe Cole Classic in Cleveland, helping her team to a program-best 2nd place finish. All five Lady Sandites placed top-four in their divisions.

“I found her in the weight room because I help coach (Kevin) Avey with the girls weightlifting,” said head coach Ty Bowling, who started the girls’ program this year.

“She tries to get as much extra work (during free period) or during weightlifting period when they’re not lifting weights, and she’ll stay after practice.”

“She’s one that gets here early and stays late,” said Bowling.

Mirza pinned her first two opponents without giving up a single point, then received two forfeits in the round-robin bracket.

“She’s run cross country and she’s ran some track, and she told me at the beginning of the year that she had never ever won a medal.”

“That preseason tournament she went to she got first, then she took sixth (at Jay) and got a medal there, and then she got first here, so she’s kind of three for three on the medals in wrestling.”

Kelsi Hilton placed third at 140 pounds with three pins, only losing in a close 8-5 decision to the tournament champion.

Addily Shotwell placed third at 170 with one pin. Kreedence Behnke placed third and Madison Chambers was fourth at 100 pounds.

“Our girls are working hard,” said Bowling. “Wrestling’s not an easy sport and they’re in here every day doing it exactly like the boys are doing.”

“We’re not trying to put too much pressure on them, but we’re telling them how they’re going to be forever remembered as the girls that started (the program) and have a chance to be the first ever Sand Springs girls State qualifiers.”

The junior varsity boys placed fourth at the tournament despite mostly facing varsity competitors.

Kase Skaggs won the 113-pound bracket and four other Sandites also medaled.

Skaggs outscored his opponents 51 to 13 with a pin and two major decisions before earning a 4-2 decision over State qualifier Daxtyn Davis.

Peyton Callis was runner-up at 165 with three pins; Cash Lucas was runner-up at 285 with three pins; Jesse Moore placed third at 144 with four pins; and Logan Childers placed fourth at 113 with three pins.

The junior high boys team placed 12th with two total medalists and the junior high girls placed 14th with one medalist.

Gage Gunn placed fourth at 132 with three pins; Dallas Flores placed fourth at 155 with five pins; and Rylee Allen placed fourth at girls 117 with two pins.

The Keystone Kids wrestling club had no problem winning the Sand Springs Slam tournament over the weekend with 28 champions, nearly tripling the score of runner-up Barnsdall.

Jase Morgan, Maddix Spencer, Hagan Wolfenberger, Kason Wolfe, Acetyn Hart, Sutton Hawley, Zander Pope, Rylan Hamby, Ty Galloway, Samuel Moore, Joshua Compton, Griffin Sensintaffar, Ayreson Reiss, David Ritchey, Matthew Moore, Kasen McAffrey, Samuel Reichel, Jaxon Trotter, Brenntly Taylor, Jayce Parks, Caemon Young, Ryker Dawes, Collin Randall, Hunter Sims, Colt Combs, Kydon Harness, Gage Buchanan, and Saylor Eaglin all won their divisions.

The varsity boys and girls will return to action Tuesday, December 20th with home duals against Sapulpa at 6:00 p.m.

Addie Hughes has busy first week with Sandite Softball

The Sand Springs softball team is off to a 3-4 start to the season after a busy first week. The Sandites kicked off 2022 with a pair of non-district losses before playing in the Broken Arrow tournament over the weekend.

Sophomore Addie Hughes received the bulk of pitching duty, going 2-4 with 31 hits, 14 strikeouts, and only four walks in 26 innings.

The Sandites were shut out 9-0 at Tahlequah (5-3) and 2-0 at home against Owasso (4-2) in a no-hitter.

Kelsi Hilton pitched the first win of the season on Friday against Edmond North (0-3) and totalled 16 hits, three walks, and eight strikeouts over 9 ⅔ innings in week one.

Sand Springs batted .500 against the Huskies in a 15-3 tournament-opening rout in only three innings. Jaden Jordan scored three runs and four RBI and hit the team’s first homer of the season.

Hughes picked up her first win of the year in a 9-2 romp against Claremore (2-3), pitching six strikeouts.

Jordan was 3-of-4 with a run and two RBI, Mikena Stephens was 2-of-4 with a run and three RBI, and Ashlyn Clark was 2-of-4 with two runs. 

Broken Arrow (4-1) spoiled their tournament title hopes 7-5 in the third game of the day, despite out-hitting the Tigers eight to seven. The Sandites committed two errors and stranded nine in the close battle.

On Saturday the Sandites won a 9-0 shutout against Jay (0-5). Hughes only gave up one hit in three innings for the win and Jordan blasted her second homer of the season.

The Sandites’ day ended in a 9-2 loss to Bristow (6-1) in bracket play despite a seven-hit performance that included solo homers from Jordan and Hilton. 

Abby Glasglow went 3-for-3 at the plate but was stranded every time, as were four other Sandite runners. 

The Sandites will look to get back above .500 Monday with a district double-header Monday at Enid (2-2) before playing at the Rogers State Festival on Thursday and Friday.

Fishing

Two teams of Sand Springs bass fishers earned their way to the Bassmaster High School National Championship on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina this week.

Freshmen Eli Rogers and Nathan Griffin placed 158th out of 311 teams, catching eight fish weighing 12 pounds, 7 ounces. Seniors Mack Taylor and Parker Haling caught nine fish weighing 12 pounds, 1 ounce. 

CPHS Baseball: Keaton Campbell hits grand slam in final pre-season game

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team went 4-4 in preseason scrimmages and is set to start the regular season with a district home game against Edmond Memorial Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sandite Sports Complex.

The Sandites won 6-2 against Bartlesville behind a solid hitting performance that included six doubles and a home run from Ethan Sartin. Brycen Peterman and Keaton Campell both hit two doubles apiece and Kiefer Massey and Ty Pennington also had one each. 

Campbell was a perfect three-for-three at the plate with one RBI. Pennington led the team in runs with two, and Sartin led the team in RBI with two. The team was .360 batting and .720 slugging. 

Brock Swanson got the start and the win on the mound with three hits, one run, one walk, and four strikeouts in five innings. Massey tossed two innings in relief and threw one hit, one run, three walks, and two strikeouts. 

They struggled early on in a 10-3 loss to Bixby and didn’t get on the board till the sixth inning. Sebastian Cassidy got the start and the loss on the mound with seven hits, four runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts in three innings. Jasper Adams gave up eleven hits, six runs, one walk, and three strikeouts in two innings. Pennington tossed one perfect inning with no hits or walks. 

The Sandites were .207 at the plate with six hits. Bixby took a 10-0 lead before Jacob Shields scored on a dropped third strike in the sixth. Peterman scored on an error and Shields brought in Jaxon Skaggs on a sacrifice in the seventh. 

Last Monday they fell 6-3 to Bishop Kelley after giving up a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Massey scored the first run of the game on a dropped third strike in the second, but Kelley scored in the third and the fourth to take the lead.

Massey batted in Pennington in the sixth to tie it up, then Kaden Young stole home. The Comets’ bats came alive in the bottom of the inning with two RBI doubles, and a trio of Sandite errors allowed the comeback.

Carson Seabolt got the loss, giving up three hits and four runs with three strikeouts in two innings. Skaggs tossed seven hits, two runs, four strikeouts, and three walks in four innings.

The Sandites cleaned up the errors the next day against Jenks, but gave up 8 hits in an 11-3 loss. Watie, Young, Peterman, and Hayden Blair combined for 10 walks and three strikeouts on the mound. Campbell and Pennington hit doubles, and Campbell’s brought in Pennington and Cody Pulscher. Pennington scored the first run of the game on a steal of home.

The Sandites got back in the win column Thursday with an 8-2 win over Glenpool that saw both teams commit three errors. Blair, Taegan Cook, and Carter Williams all hit doubles, and Peterman had a triple.

Swanson got the win on the mound with four hits, two runs, three strikeouts, and three walks in four innings. Cassidy tossed three strikeouts with no hits or walks in two innings, and Adams tossed one strikeout with no hits or walks in one inning.

The pre-season ended on a high-note with a 13-8 win over Jay, including a fourth inning grand slam from Campbell. Campbell was walked twice and scored on all three plate appearances, leading the team in runs and RBI.

Massey got the start and the win on the mound with one hit, three runs, five strikeouts, and four walks in three innings. Adams struck out the side in the fourth, Watie tossed one strikeout and three walks in the fifth, Pennington threw one hit, one strikeout, and two walks in the sixth, and Blair had three hits, five runs, one strikeout, and two walks in the seventh.

CPHS Softball: Sandites run-rule Jenks 11-1, Usher hits home run against Jay

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (17-10, 8-3) went 2-1 this past weekend, splitting games at the Tahlequah Tournament on Friday before winning an 11-1 district game against Jenks (17-9, 8-3) on Saturday. The payback win over the Trojans positioned the Sandites to potentially take second in the district.

Jenks previously beat Sand Springs 9-6 in August, but the Sandites outhit the Trojans 8-4 and benefited from three Jenks errors and eight walks for the lopsided run-rule win. Aliyah Taff (9-5, 13-11) got the win in the pitcher’s circle with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Jordyn Pipkin took the loss for the Trojans with seven hits, two strikeouts, and three walks.

The Trojans took their first and only lead in the top of the third with a solo home run from Pipkin, but Sand Springs loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and took the lead with a pair of Trojan mistakes. Sabrina Usher was hit by pitch to walk in Makenna Skaggs, and Reagan Rector scored on an error.

Sand Springs blew the game wide open in the fifth. Taff hit a 2RBI single to score Rector and Madison Lee and Jolee McNally scored on an error. Drew Hawkins hit an RBI single to score Brooklyn Harper, Rector hit a 2RBI single to score Avery Tanner and Hawkins, and Skaggs scored on a wild pitch for the 9-1 lead.

In the sixth inning Taff hit a double and courtesy runner Harper scored on a wild pitch. Tanner received a walk, stole second base, took third on the wild pitch, and scored the game winner on a bunt from Hawkins.

Jenks and Sand Springs are tied 8-3 in district action with one game left, and Sand Springs has the edge on run differential. The two teams are vying for the right to host a Regional Tournament, and it’ll come down to their Monday evening games. If both teams win, or both teams lose, Sand Springs will host. If Jenks can hold off Shawnee (12-17, 6-5) at 6:00 p.m. and Sand Springs falls to Owasso (21-10, 10-1) at 5:00 p.m., then the Trojans will get the home playoff. Sand Springs has hosted and won four-straight Regional Tournaments.

On Friday the Sandites played two games at the festival-style Tahlequah Tournament. They won 9-1 against Jay (6-19) in game one, but fell 7-0 to Moore (20-8). The games ran on a timer and only lasted four innings apiece.

Taff got the win against Jay with three hits, one strikeout, and one walk in four innings. Marsis Foreman took the loss with seven hits, one strikeout, and eight walks in three innings.

Jay scored their lone run in the top of the first as Foreman singled and stole home. Usher hit her 11th home run of the season to bring in Lee and McNally in the bottom of the inning, and Felicity Horn hit an RBI single to bring in Skaggs.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the second and Taff hit a 2RBI single to score Lee and McNally. Usher scored on a ground ball from Horn. Hawkins scored on a single from Rector in the third inning, and Rector scored the final run of the game on a ground ball from McNally.

Mackenzie Bechtold (5-3, 9-3) took the loss against Moore, throwing eight hits, one strikeout, and one walk in four innings. Morgan Max got the win with one hit, five strikeouts, and three walks in three innings. Ashlynn Haley pitched two hits and a strikeout in one inning.

Horn, Tanner and Hawkins were the only Sandites to notch hits against the Lions, and Horn and Hawkins had doubles.

Two Sandites headed to NCAA Softball Super Regionals, and other alumni updates

The No. 13 ranked Oklahoma State University Cowgirl Softball team (42-14) won its first Regional Championship since 2011 Saturday afternoon, squeezing out a 2-1 come-from-behind Finals win over No. 25 Tulsa (37-20). The Pokes also won 3-1 against the West Coast Conference Champions from BYU (30-26) and beat Tulsa 13-10 in their first meeting of the tournament.

The Cowgirl roster includes two former Sand Springs standouts in sophomore Sydney Pennington and senior Mallory Goodman.

Pennington played third base throughout the three-game tournament, recording two put outs and eight assists. At the plate she was 2-of-10 with 2 runs and 1 RBI, hitting a solo homer in the top of the second inning in the first game against Tulsa. 

Pennington is .250 on the season with 30 runs, 42 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 10 homers, 33 RBI, a .482 slugging average, .314 on-base-percentage, and a .948 fielding average. In her career she’s .277 with 57 runs, 102 hits, 18 doubles, 1 triple, 17 homers, and 76 RBI.

Goodman hasn’t seen any action this season, but she’s .241 in her career with 17 runs, 28 hits, 5 doubles, 3 homers, a .362 slugging average, and .343 on-base-percentage.

The Pokes will return to action Thursday and Friday against the defending National Champions from No. 4 Florida State (54-8) at the Tallahassee Super Regional. Game times are 6:00 p.m. CT Thursday, 2:00 p.m. CT Friday, and 11:00 a.m. CT Saturday (if necessary). Thursday and Saturday’s games will be on ESPN and Friday’s game will be on ESPN2.

Central Christian College senior Breanna Bill batted .271 this season with a .388 slugging average, 23 runs, 35 hits, 4 doubles, 4 triples, 1 home run, 11 RBI, and 8 sacrifices. The Tigers went 16-38 overall and 8-28 in the SAC.

1983 grad Randall King led the Broken Arrow High School Slow Pitch Softball team to a 23-9 record, Class 6A No. 5 ranking, and State Tournament appearance.

2011 grad Joely Rogers finished her first season as Pitching Coach at Coffeyville Community College, helping the Ravens to a 7-34 record.

Sophomore Jessica Collins batted .284 with a .327 on-base percentage, .561 slugging average, 32 runs, 42 hits, 5 doubles, 12 home runs, and 33 RBI at Connors State College as the Cowgirls went 16-31 overall and 11-22 in conference. She went 1-5 on the mound, throwing 5 strikeouts in 34 innings with a 9.34 ERA and .948 fielding percentage.

Northeastern State University went 28-27 overall and 14-12 in conference. Junior Jessica Schuler batted .297 with 29 runs, 47 hits, 33 RBI, 14 doubles, 5 homers, a .481 slugging average, .386 on-base percentage, and a .991 fielding percentage.

Junior Kennedy “Goose” Salyers finished the season .234 at the plate with 5 runs, 11 hits, 1 double, 1 RBI, a .255 slugging average, and a .250 on-base percentage at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The Savage Storm went 29-28 overall and 25-19 in conference.

Baseball

Rhett Rutledge is playing NCAA Division I baseball at Florida International University in his junior year, following a two-year stent at Northern Oklahoma College. He currently owns a .250 batting average and .300 slugging average on the season with five hits, seven runs, and one RBI, with a .905 fielding percentage. The Panthers are 22-29 overall and will return to action Thursday with a three-day three-game home series against Louisiana Tech.

Sophomores Mack Thompson and Treyce Tolbert saw action on a 24-22 Rose State College baseball team, the school’s best record since 2013. Thompson ended the season with a .879 fielding percentage, .337 batting average, .413 on-base percentage, and .402 slugging average, recording 31 hits, 6 doubles, 20 runs, and 16 RBI. Tolbert finished with a .909 fielding percentage, .297 batting average, .360 on-base percentage, and .436 slugging average, with 30 hits, 12 doubles, 1 triple, 17 runs, and 19 RBI.

Berryhill grad and native Sandite Jacob Bailey is seeing reduced duty with the Seminole State baseball team. He is 1-0 on the mound in 3.2 innings pitched with a 0.0 ERA and 6 strikeouts. Last season he was 6-1 for a 4.14 ERA. Seminole went 39-14 this season.

University of Oklahoma sophomore Jake Terry has pitched two innings this season and thrown one strikeout. His career ERA stands at 7.53. The Sooners are 31-20 overall and 9-12 in Big 12 action. They will play a three-game Red River Rivalry series this week to conclude the regular season.

CPHS Class of 1981 grad Mike Moore is Head Baseball Coach at Jay High School, and recently wrapped up the season with an 18-14 record.

Basketball

University of Central Oklahoma freshman Colt Savage scored 84 points with 25 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals for the Men’s Basketball team this past season, helping the Broncos to an 11-17 record. He shot 55.6% on field goals, 50% on three-pointers, and 90% on free throws.

Football

Sophomore Jacob Taber and the Fort Hays State University football team earned their second-straight MIAA Conference Title with a 9-3 overall record and 6-0 undefeated performance on their home turf. Taber played in all twelve games, recording 4 total tackles.

Jerry Lyons didn’t see any action his freshman year at Southwestern College football, but the Moundbuilders finished the season 6-5 overall and 5-5 in conference.

Payton Scott took a redshirt his freshman year at the University of Central Oklahoma, but the football team went 8-4 overall, 7-4 in conference, and won the Heart of Texas Bowl.

Golf

University of Denver golfer Carson Griggs cracked the starting lineup this season as a true freshman and helped his team to a Summit League Conference Championship with a sixth place finish out of 44 golfers. The Pioneers concluded their season Wednesday with a 12th place finish at the NCAA Stanford Regional.

Griggs placed 54th out of 96 at the Ram Masters Invitational, helping his team to a 4th place finish. He was first on his team and 13th out of 100 at the William H. Tucker Invitational. He was second on his team and 31st of 84 at the Bayou City Collegiate Tournament. He placed 30th of 90 at the Ping Cougar Classic, 67th of 75 at Regionals, 68th of 72 at the Paintbrush Invitational, 84th of 112 at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, and 101st of 120 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate Classic. 

Rowing

University of Oklahoma senior Hannah Hammond was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rowing Team.

Soccer

1991 grad Roger Bush led the Oral Roberts University Women to an 8-12 record. Junior Brooklyn Eardley played eight games and recorded one assist.

1999 grad Ryan Bush led the Oral Roberts University Men to a 6-7-3 record.

2012 grad Tyler McIntosh led the Midwest City Boys to a 2-12 record.

2010 grad Aaron McIntosh led the Mingo Valley Boys to a Heartland Christian Athletic Association Conference Championship in his first year as Head Coach.

Junior Kayla Foster played seven games this past season at Missouri University of Science and Technology, scoring one goal and one assist. The Miners went 4-11-1 overall and 3-9-1 in conference.

Megan Deshazo (sophomore) and Emma Peak (freshman) helped the Northern Oklahoma College (Tonkawa) team to an 8-7-1 overall record and 7-5-1 conference performance this season. Deshazo was named Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year and made the NJCAA All-Region team, leading the team in total scoring with eight goals and three assists. Deshazo is signed to play for Southwestern Christian University next season. Peak scored one goal and two assists.

Oklahoma City University freshman Abigail Banks only got to play one game this season, due to sharing the lineup with an All-Conference goalie. The Stars went 11-3-2 overall and 6-1-1 for second in conference.

Redlands Community College and sophomore Brooklyn Turner went 9-6-2 this season. Turner saw action in twelve games.

Tennis

Assistant Coach Peter McCorkle (C/o 2005) helped the Oral Roberts men’s team to a 6-12

Track and Field

Colby Community College freshman Ian Baustert finished 27th in the 800 meter run at the NJCAA Region VI Track Championships with a time of 2:09.10 last week. Earlier this season he set 4:28.77 PR in the 1500.

Grand Canyon University sophomore Cheyenne Walden finished the season 6th in the 3K Steeplechase in 11:12.13 and 23rd in the 5K run in 18:47.24 at the Western Athletic Conference Championships. Over the course of the season she set PRs of 4:45.56 in the 1500 run, 5:22.13 in the one-mile, 10:17.49 in the 3k, 17:10.40 in the 5K, and 10:54.11 in the 3K Steeple. She also won the NAU Friday Night Duals one-mile run in the season-opener, placed second in the 3K Steeple at the Aztec Invitational, and broke the school’s 5K record.

Volleyball

Kansas State sophomore Gloria Mutiri had a remarkable season this past fall, earning a multitude of accolades. She was twice named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week, made the All-Big 12 Rookie Team, and was a second team All-Big 12 selection. The American Volleyball Coaches Association selected her for the All-Midwest Region First Team, named her Midwest Freshman of the Year, and gave her an All-American Honorable Mention.

Mutiri finished the season with 271 kills, 3 assists, 15 aces, 192 digs, and 67 blocks in 98 sets. The Wildcats went 15-12 overall and 5-11 in Big 12 action. They will be taking a nine-day trip to Brazil later this month to play a series of exhibition matches in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Labette freshman Kylie Taylor recorded 2 assists, 2 aces, and 44 digs in 34 sets, helping the Cardinals to an 8-22 record.

Wrestling

Oklahoma State redshirt freshman Daton Fix won the first 26 matches of his career and went 35-2 overall this season, picking up titles at the Oklahoma City Open, the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Southern Scuffle, and the Big 12 Conference Tournament. His only losses came to All-Americans and he placed second at the NCAA Tournament.

UCO redshirt junior Cody Karstetter went 1-0 in his debut season with the Bronchos, winning an 8-3 decision in a dual with Fort Hays State.

No. 17 Lady Sandite softball run-rules No. 6 Jay 17-6 at Jenks Festival

The No.17 ranked Charles Page High School slow-pitch softball team (2-3) started in the hole against 5A No.6 Jay (18-3) Tuesday afternoon at the Jenks Festival, but took the lead in the bottom of the second and never looked back. The girls are far behind the rest of the state after an already late-starting season was further postponed due to several cancellations by opponents. The lack of slow-pitch experience caused them to drop a few upsets to start the season, but the dominating performance against the highly ranked Lady Bulldogs has demonstrated the true potential of this team. 

Senior Northeastern State University-signee Jessica Schuler (2-0) got the win on the mound, giving up four hits and six walks, but striking out one and only allowing three earned runs.

The game was a slugging fest from the get-go. Haley Dry reached on an error to start and Marissa Lokey and Jade Creekkiller were walked to load the bases. Caitlin Taylor batted in Dry, Cayla Williams scored Lokey on an error, and Jade Frazier singled in Taylor for a 3-0 advantage to start.

The Lady Sandites retaliated in the bottom of the inning, however, as freshman Kimi Presnall tripled and came in on a single by Oklahoma State--commit Sydney Pennington. Schuler doubled in Pennington and Madelyn Blair doubled in Schuler to tie the game up. 

The Sandites fielded an impressive three-pitch three-out inning in the second and took the lead on a Rachel Blair sacrifice to score Cameron Clemons. 

In the bottom of the third they expanded on their lead as Mid-American Christian University-signee Stella Millican hit a 3RBI triple to score Schuler, Jessica Collins, and Madelyn Blair, then scored on an error.

The Lady Bulldogs sought to get back on the board in the top of the fourth after Shanny Smith drew a walk, but Sandites outed her at second in a double play for another three-batter inning. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Pennington doubled and came in on a double by Schuler. Madelyn Blair singled in Schuler. Clemons singled in Collins and Blair, then came in on a single by Kennedy "Goose" Salyers for a 13-3 lead. 

The Lady Dogs fended off the fifth-inning run rule by scoring three. Dry tripled in Mataya Tanner. Lokey singled in Dry, then came home on a throw to make it 13-6. Sand Springs responded with back-to-back-to-back doubles by Schuler, Collins, and Madelyn Blair for a 15-6 advantage, then pitched a no-hitter in the top of the sixth. Jacie Taber and Salyers both singled in the bottom of the inning and Pennington smacked the 2RBI double to end the game.
