Lady Sandite Soccer deal Booker T first loss of the season for third straight win

The Charles Page and Booker T Washington girls soccer teams both entered the district opener with records well over .500 for the year. The Lady Hornets carried an undefeated record of 4-0 with them into Memorial Stadium to face the Lady Sandites who boasted a record of 4-1 on the season. The lone Sand Springs loss came at the hands of Metro Christian Academy by a score of 1-0, but Bobby Behrens's girls have gotten back on track beating Enid 5-0 and Bixby 2-1.

Sand Springs took a major hit offensively coming in, as Senior captain and leading goal scorer Kayla Foster was unable to play due to injury. Foster has scored 7 goals in the first 5 games, including a pair of hat tricks.

The Lady Hornets made a strong run at goal in the opening minute as Freshman forward Lauren Cousins played a ball in to fellow freshman midfielder McKenna Raley who took a shot that went just wide to the right of the goal. That would prove to be the only shot of the half for Booker T. as the two teams would simply trade possession for the remainder of the half. The Lady Sandites managed one shot midway through the opening 40 minutes, and it came on a Brooklyn Eardley free kick that sailed well over the top of the goal.

Both teams seemed to really pick up the pace in the second half as they traded shots for the first 20 minutes with Sandite keeper Abigail Banks making a key stop on a shot by Cousins. Sand Springs finally found pay dirt in the 64th minute when Eardley collected a loose ball on the left sideline, cut past her defender towards goal, took a couple of touches and stroked a shot inside post past the keeper. Kyndal Zicker got in on the fun as the junior contributed with her 5th goal of the season coming in the 76th minute.  The Lady Hornets refused to give up though, as Cousins and the offense continued to press forward and get off shots, but Banks and the Sandite back line stood strong and completed the shutout. It was Banks's fourth clean sheet of the year and the girls's third straight victory.

The victory moves the Sandite girls to 5-1 (1-0) and the Lady Hornets fall to 4-1 (0-1). Sand Springs will play this weekend, April 1-2 at the Edison tournament.

#3 Sandites fall 17-14 to #1 Booker T Washington after last-minute field goal

#3 Sand Springs met with the #1 undefeated Booker T Washington Hornets Friday night and lost by a last-second field goal in a rainy knock-down drag-out at S.E. Williams Stadium.

The Sandites emerged to an early 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but then the Hornets dominated the second quarter to tie things up shortly before the half. The rest of the game was a slow mover with lots of defense and very few big plays, and the victor wasn’t decided till there was only 14 seconds left in the game.

Surprisingly enough, it was the Charles Page Sandites who dominated both sides of the ball, despite the loss. Sandite Payton Scott led both teams in rushing yardage with 10 carries for 163 yards, followed by Oklahoma State-commit Justice Hill of the Hornets with 139, and Sandite Lane Lettich with 104. Hill surpassed the 1500 season mark in tonight’s game, while the Sand Springs runningbacks are still shy of 1000, though they’ll likely pass it by the end of the post-season.

The defense excelled for both teams, though Booker T came up with the most tackles-for-loss, sacking Sandite quarterback Hunter Greathouse 4 times for 25 yards. Greathouse didn’t get to do a whole lot of passing in tonight’s rain, but the two times he did connect were for major bombs totaling 91 yards to Trace Fleischman.

The Hornets offense took the field at their 35 after a Kasey Bales punt traveled out of bounds. Justice Hill managed to pick up one first down for the home team, but the Sandites excelled in the first quarter and quickly took possession at their 32.

On their first drive of the night, the Sandites needed only five plays for Greathouse to find Fleischman for a 63-yard touchdown reception. Bales kicked the PAT and the Sandites had a 7-0 lead barely four minutes into the game.

The next Hornet possession fell flat on 4th and 5 at the Sandite 32. Looking to put points on the board, QB Dakari Willis went for the keeper and was brought down at the line of scrimmage by Nathan Simonton and the ball was turned over to the Sandite Offense.

Once again, the visitors had little difficulty moving the ball.

Payton Scott picked up a first down, rushing for 11 yards, then Greathouse connected to Fleischman for a 28 yard bomb. Scott came back in for a single play and made it count, finding a hole and picking up 30 yards to give his team first and goal at the 10. Three plays later it was Lettich’s turn to find the endzone on a 2 yard run. The corresponding Bales PAT gave Sand Springs a 14-0 lead with 1:24 in the quarter.

It was the first time all season that Booker T had trailed by 14 points.

It didn’t take the Hornets long to respond, however, as they used seven plays to move the ball 46 yards, ending with a four yard touchdown run by Justice Hill, his 21st this season. Zachary Haney’s PAT brought the game to 14-7 with 10:14 in the half.

Sand Springs failed to convert on their next drive and punted it away to the Hornet 38. It looked like Booker T was going to score again as they found three first downs in nine plays and confronted Sand Springs at their 28.

The best defense in the state found an ally in Mother Nature, however, as the slippery conditions caused a fumbled hike and an incomplete pass and the Hornets were pushed back to fourth and 23 and had to punt.

The elements then turned on Sand Springs, as Greathouse had to fall on a fumbled hike for the Sandites for second and 17 at their own 7. A handoff to Scott picked the seven back up, but then Jason Harris II found Greathouse for his fourth sack of the season and nearly got a safety as the QB was brought down at the 2. Bales managed a 37 yard punt, but the Hornet offense was thirsty.

With 49.7 seconds left, Justice Hill found the endzone once again, this time on an 11-yard run. A penalty on the point-after had Haney repeating for a long PAT, but it didn’t stop him from tying up the game shortly before the half.

The third quarter belonged to the Sandites who picked up 93 yards on 19 rushes for 6 first-downs. Marching to the Hornet 16, it looked like Sand Springs was about to take the lead again, but a penalty and a sack pushed things back to 4th and 15 and Charles Page decided to try for a field goal. A 31-yard kick by Bales was dead center, but was nullified due to a penalty that pushed it back to the 26. This time the hike was fumbled and Jacob Taber was unable to find a receiver downfield and took a tackle-for-loss at the 40.

Sand Springs got the ball back four plays later at the BTW45, and used six plays spanning over into the fourth quarter to march to the Hornet 4 yard-line where Lettich gave the Sandites 1st and goal at the 1 yard-line.

The Hornet defense showed up, however, and Sand Springs found themselves 4th and 4 after three failed runs. Instead of kicking a field goal, the Sandites decided to try for a pass to Fleischman, but it was broken up by Daxton Hill.

Neither team scored on their next possessions and the home team ended up with the ball at the SS20. With 14 seconds left, Haney connected on a 35-yard field goal to give the Hornets the lead for the first time. Then, Haney found his first touchback of the night on kickoff, preventing the Sandites from a last-second touchdown return.

Sand Springs went down swinging, attempting a deep pass to Fleischman that fell short, then Greathouse was sacked to end the game 17-14.

It was a bit of déjà vu for both teams. Two weeks prior, Haney connected on a late field goal for a 17-14 win over Bartlesville. Last year in week 10 Sand Springs lost by a field goal at the #1 Bixby Spartans’ home field in a down-to-the-wire battle royale.

While Booker T may have succeeded in clinching the district title, the Sandites were far from losers. This was only Sand Springs’s second true loss of the season and both were away games to the #2 and #1 teams. The boys from the Springs proved that they could stand toe-to-toe with the best in the state and give them a run for their money. With the post-season now a certainty, Sand Springs still has a very legitimate possibility of making a major run at the state title.

Week 9 Predictions

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

These next two weeks hold a lot of post-season-implication for District 1. While the dust is mostly settled down South, the North still has four teams battling it out for playoff berths and you can expect that none of them will go quietly into that good night.

#1 Booker T Washington (7-0, 5-0) District 1

#3 Charles Page (4-3, 4-1) District 1

Easily the biggest game of the week for 6A-II, and the biggest game of the year for Sand Springs, this will be the deciding game on if the Sandites have a real shot at the state title. If CPHS can pull off the upset here then they'll have a guaranteed ride to the playoffs. On paper, the Hornets should have no problem fending off Sand Springs, but a storm is brewing and the Sandites are hungry. Booker T is a predominately run-oriented offense while Sand Springs has a pretty even pass-rush split. BTW has the home field advantage, but with rain on the way, anything can happen. Booker T leads the series 11-6, but Sand Springs has won 2 of the last 3 and the last 2 were both big-scoring shootouts.

The pick: BTW 43, CPHS 24

#2 Bartlesville (7-1, 4-1) District 1

#10 Ponca City (2-5, 1-4) District 1

Not much to see here, the Wildcats will be easily tamed by the Bruins' stellar air raid. Colton Penrod just passed the 8000 mark on career-passing yards and is third in the state this season.

The pick: Bartlesville 56, Ponca 28

#4 Bixby (5-3, 3-2) District 1

#7 Muskogee (3-5, 3-2) District 1

Muskogee's last real hope for a playoff berth comes down to this game. The Spartans are still one of the top teams in the state, but they have fallen on hard times. Bixby is coming off a devastating loss to BTW and Muskogee gets the home field advantage in what's sure to be a thrilling game. The Spartans have a lot to prove in this game if they want to be a real contender for the title.

The pick: Bixby 42, Muskogee 27

#5 Lawton (6-1, 4-0) District 2

#6 Midwest City (6-2, 4-1) District 2

Probably the second-most exciting game of the week is the Title game for District 2. The Bombers put up a great effort in a week 1 loss to BTW, then got upset majorly by Stillwater. Was the Pioneer loss a fluke or are the Wolverines truly the best team down South?

The pick: Lawton 35, MWC 27

#8 Putnam City West (4-4, 2-2) District 2

#15 Eisenhower (0-8, 0-4) District 2

The Patriots came into the season as the bottom-ranked team in the division and haven't had a winning record since 2000, and haven't seen the playoffs since 1996. The current lineup has put an end to that era and is headed to the playoffs, so long as they aren't upset by the two worst teams in the state.

The pick: PCW 42, Ike 14

#9 Stillwater (3-5, 2-2) District 2

#14 Enid (2-6, 1-3) District 2

The Pioneers won't have a winning record, but they should make the playoffs with the bottom seed, at least. Enid's only true win was a 3-point win against Ike last week. Sand Springs had to forfeit a 33-7 victory after a player was deemed ineligible.

The pick: Stilly 38, Enid 20

#11 Claremore (2-6, 0-5) District 1

#13 Sapulpa (1-6, 0-5) District 1

The pick: Claremore 35, Sapulpa 27

#12 Choctaw (4-4, 2-3) District 2

US Grant (2-5)

The Generals finally broke a 6-game losing streak and officially have their best record since 2003. Don't expect them to tie that magical 4-6 season, however.

The pick: Choctaw 47, Grant 12

Lady Sandite Softball splits district with Yukon

The Charles Page High School softball team was inches away from securing the district title last Thursday as they traveled to Yukon. The Lady Sandites were undefeated all season in district play and the Yukon Millerettes had only one loss, 7-6 to the Sandites earlier in the season.

Had the Sandites trumped the home team it would have cinched the title. The Millers refused to go quietly, however, and handed the Sandites their first district loss of the season in a 4-0 shutout. This left both teams with a 13-1 record.

Breley Webb got the win on the mound for Yukon, allowing only five base hits. Sydney Pennington got the loss for Sand Springs.

Webb hit an RBI Single in the bottom of the first to score Holman. Hannah Franklin hit an RBI in the fourth inning to score Cheyenne Factor. Franklin secured her spot as the star of the show with a 2RBI Double in the bottom of the sixth.

The Millers needed to win by two runs to secure the number one seed, and they outdid themselves with four as the Sandites lost by a hair.

Sand Springs will still get to host a regional tournament October 8-9 and will play Claremore on the 8th at noon. Union and Ponca City will also be at the tournament. The Sandites haven’t played Claremore or Ponca this year, but they were defeated 5-2 by Union in the second game of the season.

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team handily defeated the Bixby Lady Spartans Tuesday night 7-2 in their last home district game of the season. Senior Northeastern State University-commit Jessica Schuler was the star of the show, batting .750 for five RBIs and one homerun. Oklahoma State University-commit Syndey Pennington was right behind her batting .750 with a homerun of her own and three total runs.

It was a bit of a slow start for the Lady Sandites, scoring only one run in the first inning on single by Schuler that brought home Jessica Collins. Their defense also ran into some problem early on, as Kat Taylor was walked and Hayley Womack reached base on an error. Both were left stranded, however.

In the third inning Lady Spartan Teri Pogue reached second base on a line drive into centerfield and Taylor was walked once again, but both were stranded after Blair scooped up a groundball and threw out Sierra Skaggs at first.

The Lady Sandites finally took a commanding 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Goose Salyers hit a double into the fence, Pennington hit a single down the third baseline, and Schuler scored all three of them—hitting a homerun over the fence.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning as Skaggs hit a single on loaded bases, scoring Taylor and Lillie Lavendusky. Stella Millican caught a fly ball from Sierra Kreiling that would have loaded the bases again, and Blair threw out Meredith Iden at first to bring the Spartan’s lone scoring inning to a close.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pennington found the third baseline again—this time for a double. Schuler brought her home on a centerfield single, then was replaced by designated runner Cameron Clemons who would score a few plays later on a single by third baseman Cody Cheatham for a 6-2 lead.

The final score of the game was a homerun over the fence from Pennington in the bottom of the sixth.

Pennington got the win on the mound for the Sandites with only 7 hits and 5 strikeouts, while Iden got the loss for Bixby with 15 hits and 1 strikeout. Schuler also led the game defensively with 10 putouts and 1 assist.

The Lady Sandites are 24-7 overall and 13-1 in district play. Recently, they went 1-1 at the Putnam City Tournament, losing 6-2 to Putnam City and defeating El Reno 10-1. A third game, against Duncan, was rained out.

Week 4 Sandite Pride Rankings and Predictions

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Week 3 was heavily disrupted by severe weather systems across the state that lead to more cancellations than actual games.

#1 Charles Page (2-0, 0-0) District 1

The Sandites were one of few teams to actually start a game Friday night, but it was cancelled shortly before halftime and will thus not count towards their record or stats. However, their performance on the field still plays into my rankings. They lead 5A unranked Guthrie 18-7 with 6 minutes in the half, and QB Hunter Greathouse was 4-5-129 in that short amount of time. Guthrie may not be the team they've been in recent memory, but they're far from pushovers.

#5 Bartlesville (3-0, 0-0) District 1

The Bruins were far enough North that they had plenty of time to put a 42-20 beat down on Enid before the weather reached them. Enid is an 0-3 pushover this year and the 20 points they scored on Bartlesville is the most they've mustered all season. I expect Bartlesville to come hot at the Sandites with their offense, but be unable to put up any stops of their own against double-threat Hunter Greathouse. I'm expecting a shootout with the Sandites coming on top by a pair of touchdowns, minus a few blocked/missed PATs.

The Pick: CPHS 46, Bartlesville 35.

#2 Bixby (2-1, 0-0) District 1

Despite nearly 700 yards of total offense, the Spartans didn't put up nearly the points I expected them to against Springdale, AR (0-3). It looks like the defending State Champions have their offense in good order between QB Tanner Griffin and RB Nic Roller but are going to need to whip their defense in shape quickly if they want to hold up against BTW and CPHS. The Spartans won 57-38, which is more points than they allowed anyone but Jenks to score last season.

#10 Claremore (2-1, 0-0) District 1

The Red Zebras held up to a 10 point loss to Siloam Springs, 22-12, only 3 points worse than I expected. Their passing game was abysmal and they won't stand much of a chance rushing against Bixby. If they manage to score at all it will be due more to Bixby's slacking defense than Claremore's capabilities.

The Pick: Bixby 52, Claremore 3

#3 Booker T Washington (2-0, 0-0) District 1

The Hornets game against East Central was cancelled Friday, though it's safe to say it would have been a slaughter considering the 62-6 they put on Tulsa Central in week 2.

#9 Ponca City (1-1, 0-0) District 1

The Wildcats' game against Shawnee was also cancelled, but not before they were outscored 10-6 in the first quarter. It's hard to judge a team off less than a quarter so I didn't drop them in my rankings, but I had expected Ponca to easily defeat the unranked 5A team.

The Pick: BTW 42, Ponca City 13.

#4 Midwest City (2-1, 0-0) District 2

The Bombers pulled off a big upset over the top ranked 5A Del City, 37-14, and are my favorite to win the District 2 title. They lost to BTW in the season opener, but when it comes to Eisenhower, they're going to bring the thunder.

#14 Eisenhower (0-3, 0-0) District 2

Lawton Ike scored a lot more against 5A #2 MacArthur than anybody expected them to, but were still handed a solid 57-34 beat down.

The Pick: MWC 28, Ike 6

#6 Choctaw (2-1, 0-0) District 2

Choctaw suffered their first loss of the season in a close 25-23 to Putnam North.

#12 Enid (0-3, 0-0) District 2

The Plainsmen have been getting their butts handed to them left and right this year, and I don't expect things to change in district play.

The Pick: Choctaw 38, Enid 12.

#7 Muskogee (0-3, 0-0) District 1

The Roughers have definitely not lived up to expectation these past two season under new Head Coach Rafe Watkins, but in their defense, they've only played really solid teams thus far. 33-22 to 5A #5 McAlester, 34-25 to 6A #5 Owasso, and 56-21 to undefeated #3 Fayetteville, AR. If they were in District 2 I could see them making a run at the district title, but in the talent-crowded Tulsa district I see them winning 3 games at most.

#13 Sapulpa (1-1, 0-0) District 1

Lawton may not be the team they were last year, but the Chieftains got off lucky that their game was cancelled. Unfortunately for them, there's no rain in the forecast for this Friday.

The Pick: Muskogee 35, Sapulpa 12.

#8 Putnam City West (1-2, 0-0) District 2

I was so impressed with PCW after their 5 point loss to Del City and their 29-6 win over PCN, then they had to go and blow it, getting slaughtered 49-17 by PC.

#11 Lawton (1-1, 0-0) District 2

I'm a lot less confident in PCW for this matchup than I was last week, and it's really anybody's game in my book.

The Pick: PCW 31, Lawton 28

#15 Stillwater (0-3, 0-0) District 2

Stillwater lost 26-14 to Edmond North Friday, and is the only team not starting District play this upcoming weekend. As District 2 is only 7 teams, the Pioneers will be battling with U.S. Grant as both teams look for their first win of the season.

The Pick: Stillwater 29, Grant 14.

My Record

  • Week 1: 10-2 83%
  • Week 2: 12-2 85%
  • Week 3: 6-3 66%
  • Overall: 28-7 80%

CPHS softball trumps Yukon in district battle

Sydney Pennington led the scoring for the Charles Page varsity fast pitch team with two runs and four RBIs, while Cheyenne Factor led the Yukon Millers’ softball team with three runs and three RBIs. Both hit the lone homeruns for their teams.

The Sand Springs Lady Sandites and the Yukon Lady Millers both entered Thursday’s district match-up at the Sandite Sporting Complex with undefeated district records and battled neck-and-neck to maintain that status.

Senior Goose Salyers got the start and win on the mound for the Sandites, while Breeley Webb suffered a loss for the Millers. Both players had a hard time pitching to such incredible talent at bat. Salyers allowed 34 hits over 7 innings and Webb allowed 29 hits over 6 innings—though Webb managed two strikeouts.

Yukon was first at bat and emerged to an early 2-0 lead over the home team. Mady Taylor was first on base with a single into center field, and was quickly brought home on an RBI homerun by Cheyenne Factor that easily cleared the fence. Makenna Arnold hit what should have been a single, but turned it into a double thanks to an error in left field by Rachel Blair. She was left stranded however as Stella Millican caught a fly ball into right field to bring the Lady Sandites in to bat.

Salyers hit a single that she turned into a double due to a Miller error. Jessica Collins hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Salyers to third, and Pennington smacked a big single into left field to bring her home, 2-1. Jessica Schuler nailed a double into the fence to bring Pennington to third, but they were both left stranded at the end of the inning.

The second inning saw four hits, no runs, and one stranded for the Millers, followed by three hits from the Sandites that failed to land anyone on base.

The Lady Millers furthered their lead in the third inning as Aleah Holman, Factor, and Webb hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, with Factor’s bringing Holman home and Webb’s bringing Factor home. Some impressive batting by Yukon was trumped by even more impressive Sandite fielding and two were left stranded as the home team came in to bat, trailing 4-1.

Salyers got on base with a single off of a fielding error by Webb, and was quickly brought in by a Sydney Pennington homerun that cleared the fence.

Sand Springs tied things up in the fourth inning, holding Yukon scoreless and scoring on a double into the centerfield fence by Salyers that brought Cody Cheatham home.

The fifth inning saw plenty of hits but no runs by either team. Great fielding by Kimi Presnell helped the home team to prevent any Yukon runs in the sixth inning and the Sandites came in to take the lead at bat. With back-to-back outs to start, Salyers changed the momentum with a single into centerfield followed by Collins. Pennington smacked an RBI single to bring Salyers home, and Schuler was walked leaving the bases loaded. Finally, Kalli Mallory hit a 2RBI single to bring Pennington and Collins home, 7-4.

The Lady Millers didn’t go down without a fight, as Riley Khr and Factor both hit singles and Arnold brought them in on a 2RBI double. Their attempt to retake the lead fell short, however, as Presnell caught an infield fly from Taylor to end the game.

Charles Page is now 16-3 overall and 9-0 in district play, maintaining the top spot in 6A-3 as Yukon drops to 12-6 and 7-1. The Sandites will next take on Tahlequah in the first round of the Coweta tournament Friday morning, and the Millers will travel to Norman next Tuesday. The two teams will get a rematch in a double header at Yukon’s home turf later this month.
