Charles Page High School hosted its first fishing contest Thursday evening, drawing seventeen teams of two, and two solo participants. The event was a kind of launching pad for the new Sand Springs High School Bass Club which was started this school year.

Noah Daczewitz (15) and Hunter Hilger (14) formed the first team at CPHS and have since been joined by two others. John Miller plus Caden Pennington make up Team Two and Braden Millican and Ty Steelman comprise Team Three.

The teams compete on the Oklahoma Bass Nation High School Trail, which consists of five tournaments. Teams are awarded points based on their finish in each tournament, and the top team will advance to the 2016 Bass Nation High School National Championship this summer.

While the club is officially recognized by the school, it does not receive funding and relies on sponsorship from local businesses like Keystone Chevrolet and Woody's Bait and Tackle.

The first official OBN event was held at Lake Eufala last October. Team One managed just one catch, weighing in at 3.77 pounds and placed 15th.

Earlier this month Teams One and Two placed 12th and 15th respectively at Lake Murray on April 3rd, and immediately followed it up with a tournament at Lake Texoma on April 4th. Team One was hung up with mechanical difficulties, but Team Two performed excellently with a fourth place finish.

Both teams at the Lake Murray Tournament caught the five fish limit, with Team One weighing in at 11.91 pounds, with the largest fish weighing 2.82. Team Two weighed in at 9.47 with the largest weighing 2.51.

At Lake Texoma Team One only managed one catch, weighing 2.15 pounds, before they were forced out of the competition in 28th place. Miller and Pennington soared to fourth with five fish totaling 10.88 pounds, the largest being 2.74.

The latest standing were released earlier this month and Team One sits at 13th with 248 points, with Team Two coming in at 22nd with 183 points.

Brock Youngblood tied with Daczewitz for biggest bass at 20.5 inches. \\SUBMITTED

All three teams were supposed to participate in an event on Grand Lake but it was called off due to hazardous wind conditions. The next tournament will be at Ft. Gibson from May 14-15 and it will be Team Three's first official appearance.

There's no limit to the number of teams a school can have. All teams consist of two student anglers and one adult captain, and boats must meet strict safety regulations outlined by the Bass Anglers Sportsman Society.

The Sandite Bass Classic had a two fish limit and was judged by length, not weight. Daczewitz and Hilger took first place at 40.25 inches, followed by Brock Youngblood and Riley Rutledge at 36.5."

Youngblood and Daczewitz tied in the Big Bass competition at 20.5 inches. Overall there were 36 contestants in the competition. Assistant Principle Rod Sitton did the presenting of the awards. Also on hand were Principle Stan Trout and Mayor Mike Burdge. Photos from the weigh-in ceremony are available at https://sanditepride.smugmug.com/1st-Annual-Sandite-Bass/

Blake Sargent takes first at Bobby Lyons Invitational

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Despite sitting out several key starters, the Charles Page High School wrestling squad was still more than capable of finishing third at their home tournament behind the #1 teams in 6A and 5A. After upsetting the #1 Broken Arrow Tigers Thursday night, the most important thing for the Sandites to do now is remain healthy for Regionals, State, and Dual State. #8 Riley Weir, John Jiminez, #2 Trace Fleischman, #7 Lane Lettich, and Delvin Jordan all sat out the tournament to rest and recover, and several backups got to see their first varsity action of the season.

(Part One of Five...)

With Weir nursing a hurt arm, the Sandites didn't wrestle anybody at 106.

At 113 Sand Springs wrestled #5 Michael Ritchey (11-11) against #9 Laif Jones of Bartlesville, and the hometown boy put forward a 3-1 decision for the win. Unfortunately in the next round he was pitted against the #3-ranked State Runner-Up Mason Naifeh of Union. Earlier this week Naifeh defeated Ritchey by a narrow 4-1 decision in the dual, but this time the Perry Champion would pull even further ahead for an 11-3 major, sending Ritchey to the consolation bracket. From there Ritchey rebounded with an 11-3 major of his own over #8 John Warford of Sapulpa, but fell 2-1 to Barnsdall's Logan Bryant and had to settle for fourth place.

Also at 113, but wrestling unattached, was junior Kenny Daniel (0-2) who made his first varsity appearance since the Bixby dual last January. Daniel was pinned in 1:37 by Bryant and 2:45 by Warford.

120 #6 Blake Sargent (21-7) made a great opening statement with a 3:37 pin of #9 Cameron Clark of Sapulpa, then followed it up with a 6-3 decision over Devon Ball (Sperry) and a 1-0 decision against Union's Cordney Chairs to wrap up the first day's action. In the Saturday finals Sargent got a rematch against #7 TaJuan Daniels of Broken Arrow, whom he had just beaten 4-2 in overtime Thursday night. Once more the Sandite would prevail, this time 3-2 for a first place finish.

#20 Jenks Trojans upset #10 Sandites

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Charles Page High School varsity dribblers still hold their #10 ranking, but have been going in the opposite direction from where they started.

After starting the season 7-0, the boys have given up four straight and gave up a close loss to the #20 Jenks Trojans whom they should have handled easily.

The Sandites got on the board first with a layup by Arvionte Nichols, but TJ Washington shot three from three-point range, broken up by a Kyle Keener free throw, to make the score 9-3. Once more it would appear the Trojans were having difficulty at the score table, however, and the score was only updated to 7-3--a mistake that would not be corrected.

The Trojan scoring frenzy continued till they had worked up a 22-9 first quarter lead.

The second quarter belonged to Sand Springs, however, as the Sandites found their mojo and doubled the home team 16-8 by half time. The visitors still trailed by 5 (three according to the scoreboard) but they were clearly on the up-and-up.

The Sandites won the third quarter as well, but only by 12-11 and still trailed by four going into the final period.

Both teams battled valiantly but ultimately it came down to a series of desperation fouls and the Trojans came out on top for a 53-48 finish with Washington sinking a pair of freebies for an incredible 28 point game high.

Keener and Haddock both doubled but it was a shortage of rebounds that ultimately did the Sandites in.

Haddock scores 26 in Sandites' defeat of #5 Ardmore

The Ardmore Holiday Invitational has been a mess of delays, but it hasn't slowed down the Sandite scoring effort.

The whole tournament was pushed back 24 hours due to the blizzards, flooding, tornadoes, and whatever else the Oklahoma weather was throwing at us Sunday and Monday. Then, the Sandites' opening game against Greenhill Prep (12-3) was delayed a further two hours Tuesday night, and Wednesday night's game against the tournament hosts was delayed an hour and a half.

Tuesday night's game against the Dallas-area private school was a back and forth effort till midway through the fourth quarter when the Sandites finally pulled away for a 73-54 win and a 6-0 record.

At halftime the lead was a mere 36-33.

Three Sandites scored in the double digits--the same three that lead the team overall for the season. Colt Savage led all scorers with 18 points, tying the career-high record he set last season. Not far behind him was fellow sophomore Brooks Haddock with 16 and Kyle Keener with 15.

Greenhill also had three double-digit scorers. Kreitling and Bryant both scored 13 followed by Woods with 11.

The action continued Wednesday night as the Sandites took on the hosting Ardmore team who had just defeated Western Heights 88-72 the night before. The #5 team in 5A had a 5-3 record going into the game, and Sand Springs was out to spoil it.

Sand Springs got on the board first with a three-pointer from Mack Thompson who tied his season-high with ten points. The two teams were back and forth in scoring, but the Tigers led for most of the first period before Sand Springs began to tie it up towards the end of the quarter.

Finally, Kyle Keener sank a two and added a free-throw to retake the lead, 19-18. It would only last a moment, however, as Carlos Coppage would nail a three at the buzzer.

The two teams traded the lead with each of the first three shots of the second period before Thompson, Keener, and Colt Savage scored back-to-back to give their team some wiggle room.

The Sandites trailed by as much as 4 in the first period, then led by as much as 7 in the second before a sloppy finish gave the Tigers three-straight turnovers to narrow the game to 37-36 going into the half.

The Sandites missed 15 field goals in the first half and gave up 14 turnovers.

Whatever Coach Savage said to them at half time seemed to work, because the boys only gave up 7 more turnovers in the second half.

The better offensive effort helped Sand Springs to outscore the Tigers 16-11 in the third, but the beginning of the fourth belonged to Ardmore who tied things up at 55 halfway through the fourth.

Finally, Sand Springs pulled away, scoring 19 points in the last 4 minutes to ice the cake for a 74-60 win.

Free-throws seemed to be the Tigers' kryptonite as the home team shot 13 of 25 from the line compared to the Sandites' 19 of 26. Ardmore did lead in turnovers, however, giving up the ball only 13 times to the Sandites' 21.

Brooks Haddock led all scorers with a season-high 26 points, chased by Ardmore's Marvin Johnson with 21. All together, Sand Springs had 4 players in double digits, while Ardmore only managed 2. Jacob Taber also scored a personal season-best with 5 points.

Sand Springs (7-0) will play in the tournament championship Thursday at 2:30.
