Cross Country

The Sandites got their first taste of the postseason Tuesday at the Frontier Valley Conference Meet in Bartlesville. The girls didn’t have a full lineup, but the varsity boys played eighth and the junior high boys placed seventh.

Jazmin Lopez led the varsity girls with a 5K time of 24:32 for 37th place. Alejandro Lopez led the varsity boys in 19:15 for 30th place, closely followed by Noah Hanlon in 19:22 for 33rd. 

Chloe Grona led the junior high girls with an 11:57 two-mile run for fourth place. Taigh Wright led the junior high boys with a time of 11:39 for 13th. 

The varsity teams will return to action Saturday, October 23rd at Mohawk Park in the 6A-East Regional.

Fishing

Sandite duo Mack Taylor and Parker Haling placed fourth at the Oklahoma BASS Nation trail event on Lake Skiatook Saturday, catching three fish totaling 6.29 pounds. On Sunday they caught one fish weighing 1.19 pounds for 37th place. 

Standings have not been updated with this weekend’s results yet, but the duo should rank among the top 10 in the state. The OBN season will take a winter break and return to action April 2nd at Lake Tenkiller.

Softball

The Charles Page High School softball team recently ended the season with an 18-15 record as Regional runners-up. 

Despite not advancing to the State tournament, the Sandites showed flashes of brilliance this year, including wins over Edmond Memorial and El Reno, who did go to State. They pitched three shutouts and won seven games by run rule.

Lauren Hammock led the team in batting average (.446), on-base percentage (.532), and hits (41). Kelsi Hilton batted .413 and led the team in slugging (.543) with a team-best four triples and 30 RBI. Raegan Rector led the team in doubles (11) and Jolee McNally led in runs (36).

Rector led the team in put-outs with 183, and Avery Tanner led in assists with 66. Rector turned 14 double plays and Tanner had 12. Rector was also among the most efficient fielders, holding a .995 fielding percentage on 204 opportunities.

Hilton was the team’s ace pitcher this season, collecting a 10-6 record with a 4.5 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and a team-high 46 strikeouts. Nataley Crawford went 5-6 in the circle with a 4.2 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts.

The Sandites will graduate five seniors this year: Tanner, McNally, Hammock, Rector, and Taylor Skipper.

Volleyball

Sandite Volleyball wrapped up its season with a 14-20 record, going 2-6 in Frontier Valley Conference action, and winning its home tournament.

The girls played a tougher schedule than they have in the past few years, competing at several A-league tournaments, and 12 of their 20 losses came at the hands of eventual State Qualifiers. 

Payton Robbins led the offense with 259 kills, followed by Kasidy Holland with 204, Layla Lenex with 192, and Jacelyn Smith with 147. Robbins also led the team in aces with 49, followed by Charley Fahland with 36 and Smith with 34. 

Lenex led the team in blocks with 64, Robbins had 31, and Smith had 29. Fahland had a team-high 353 digs, Robbins had 265, and Teyha Johnson had 217. Johnson handled most of the setting, recording 689 assists.

Sand Springs will graduate Smith, Holland, Fahland, and Johnson this year.

Sandite Athletics Weekly Roundup: Softball upsets Bixby

Cross Country

The Sand Springs elementary cross country team competed at Bishop Kelley Tuesday, September 21st and took third place in a combined boys and girls run. Chloe Grona led the team with a second-place finish, running a 5:48 mile. Josie Grona placed seventh in 6:11 and Jacob Lovins placed eighth in 6:12.

Fast Pitch Softball

Sandite Softball (15-13) wrapped up district action with a 3-2 upset of Bixby Thursday, holding the Spartans scoreless after the first inning. 

JoLee McNally scored on a double from Lauren Hammock in the first inning, then hit a triple in the third inning and tied it up on a double from Avery Tanner. Kelsi Hilton scored the go-ahead run on a single from Morgan Rector in the sixth. 

Bixby put two runners on in the seventh, but Tanner scooped a groundball and made the throw to first to end the game. Hilton got the win in the pitcher’s circle with seven hits, two strikeouts, and three walks. 

Sand Springs then competed at the Tahlequah-NSU festival and went 1-3. 

Raegan Rector pitched a 10-5 win against Jay on Saturday, giving up only four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Hilton led the offense, batting 2-of-3 for two runs, two RBI, and a double. 

The Sandites lost games of 11-4 to Tuttle, 6-0 to Moore, and 10-2 to Edmond Deer Creek. 

They will wrap up the regular season Thursday on the road at Oologah-Talala. Regional Assignments will be released Friday. 

Fishing 

The Charles Page High School fishing club competed at the Oklahoma Bass Nation trail events on Broken Bow Lake September 18th and 19th. 

Mack Taylor and Parker Haling placed ninth on Saturday, catching five fish weighing 8.77 pounds. Then on Sunday they caught five fish weighing 8.06 pounds for tenth place. They are currently sixth overall in this season’s standings. 

Nate Griffin and Jaxon Trotter caught two fish weighing 3.31 pounds on Saturday for 33rd place. 

The next OBN trail event will be October 16th on Skiatook Lake. 

Volleyball

Class 6A No. 16 Sand Springs (13-17 overall, 2-4 conference) went 3-3 last week, winning a 3-0 conference sweep of Muskogee on Tuesday before competing at the Bishop McGuinness tournament over the weekend.

In Tuesday’s match against Muskogee Payton Robbins scored 10 kills and five aces, Teyha Johnson recorded 19 assists, Jacelyn Smith scored eight kills, Charley Fahland made nine digs and scored four aces, and Layla Lenex had four blocks. All five of Robbins’s aces came in a 9-0 run during set two. The Sandites easily dismantled the Roughers 25-13, 25-9, and 25-11. 

In Oklahoma City the Sandites won 2-0 against Choctaw and Yukon, but fell 2-0 to Bishop McGuinness, Deer Creek, and Carl Albert.

Sandite Volleyball will return to action Thursday, September 30th with a conference match against Booker T. Washington at home. 

Sand Springs Weekly Sports Roundup: Daton Fix wins World Team Trials, Carter Young flips to OSU

Varsity Cross Country traveled to Stillwater Saturday for the Cowboy Jamboree but neither the boys nor the girls had a complete lineup to earn a team place. The junior high and elementary teams competed at Holland Hall.

Jasmin Lopez led the varsity ladies in 64th place with a 5K time of 23:06. Alex Lopez led the boys in 130th place with a time of 19:33, followed by Noah Hanlon in 142nd with a time of 19:43.

Junior high boys placed seventh, led by Taigh Wright’s 12:28 two-mile run in 19th place. Junior high girls didn’t have a full lineup, but Maddyx Hampton placed 48th in 15:14.

The elementary boys placed second, led by Conner Williamson with a 6:11 mile for second place. The elementary girls placed fifth, led by Josie Grona with a 6:48 mile for sixth place.

Softball

Sand Springs (11-10, 5-6) went 2-2 in district action last week, winning a pair of 16-0 district double headers against the combined Tulsa Memorial / Booker T. Washington team before falling 9-3 to Jenks and 8-3 to Stillwater.

The Sandites needed only three innings apiece to run-rule the Tulsa team on Monday, out-hitting TPS 19-1 over the two games. 

Kelsi Hilton and Raeagn Rector combined for a no-hitter with six strikeouts in game one, and Hilton got the win. Nataley Crawford pitched all of game two and tossed six strikeouts with one hit.

The Sandites will host Bixby Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to wrap up district play.

Volleyball

The 6A No. 15 Sandites (10-14) went 3-3 overall last week and 2-3 at the Owasso tournament. They beat No. 14 Bartlesville 3-1 on the road Tuesday in conference action, then beat Ponca City 2-0 and Southmoore 3-1 in tournament play. They dropped matches of 2-0 to Owasso, 2-0 to Edmond Memorial, and 2-0 to Booker T. Washington.

Wrestling

Former 4X State Champion Sandite and current Oklahoma State wrestler Daton Fix won the 61kg freestyle world team trials in Lincoln, Nebraska. Fix outscored his opponents 41-5 with two technical falls to earn the right to represent the United States at the World Championships in Oslo, Norway this October.

In the Round of 16 he defeated Carter Young 13-2, then he beat 2018 NCAA Champion Seth Gross 11-0. In the semifinals he topped defending World Team member Tyler Graff 2-0 to earn a best-of-three finale against Nathan Tomasello. The 2015 NCAA Champion was no match for Fix, who won 8-3 and 7-0. 

After falling to Fix in his second match, Carter Young battled back to win the consolation bracket and place third. Young is also a former Sandite, winning a state title as a freshman at Sand Springs before transferring to Stillwater.

Young won his first match 8-6 over 2020 ACC Champion Jakob Camacho. In consolation he received a forfeit from Ethan Lizak, won 10-8 against 2016 NCAA Champion Nahshon Garrett, received a forfeit from Nick Suriano, then beat Graff 9-2 and Gross 15-12.

Young previously committed to and enrolled at Northwestern in Illinois, but he has now signed with Oklahoma State University instead.

Sandite Roundup: Shelli Brown celebrates 600th win in 25th season

Shelli Brown has been the head softball coach at Charles Page High School since before her current class of seniors was even born. In fact, she’s been the head coach since before some of her assistant coaches were born.

Now in her 25th season as a Sandite, Coach Brown is a pillar in the community. 

“Shelli’s an icon in women’s softball at the high school level,” says Sand Springs Athletic Director Rod Sitton. “She started her career here, hopefully she ends her career here. She’s not only a great coach, but a great leader and a great example for the young ladies that go through here. It’s been a real privilege to have her here and work with her, and also be her boss. She’s just a great person all around.”

On Tuesday, August 24th, the team celebrated Brown’s 600th career win in fast pitch. The milestone came in a 14-6 rout of Adair on Thursday, August 19th at the Rogers State festival in Claremore. They also beat Lincoln Christian 11-2 in the first game of the festival.

Owning a 603-326 record with 10 regional championships, two academic state championships, two district championships, and one conference championship, Brown has been one of the most successful coaches in school history in any sport. Under her guidance, 32 sandites have received All-State accolades and at least 60 have signed to play at the next level.

“It’s not about excellence just in softball itself, but it’s also about academic excellence,” added District Superintendent Sherry Durkee. “Personally, I’m super proud of the two academic state championships.” 

Prior to the Tuesday-night doubleheader against Enid, Brown’s senior class presented her with a commemorative game ball signed by the entire team, along with flowers and balloons. Then they gave her a 601st and 602nd win by drubbing the Pacers 20-3 and 3-1.

Raegan Rector went 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI and two doubles in the first game, Mikenna Stephens was 3-of-4 with four RBI, and Kelsi Hilton was 3-of-4 with four runs. 

With temperatures nearing 100℉, the bats slowed down in game two, and the Sandites actually needed a fifth-inning comeback. Trailing 1-0, Taylor Skipper tied it up with a single to score Ashlyn Clark, then Skipper and Jolee McNally scored on an error for the lead.

Nataley Crawford pitched eight strikeouts and only three hits in the first game, and Hilton got the win in game two. 

The Sandites followed it up with a 12-4 district beatdown of Bartlesville on Thursday that saw Hilton go 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple, two runs, and four RBI, while also striking out four batters in four innings from the circle. Lauren Hammock was also 3-of-4 with three runs and two RBI.

Sandite Softball is now 5-3 on the season and will continue district action on the road with a Thursday game at Bixby (9-2, 5-0).

CPHS Volleyball

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Sandite Volleyball team (7-4) suffered a 3-1 conference loss to No. 3 Broken Arrow (10-3) Tuesday, August 24th at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites lost sets of 25-15, 25-22, and 25-9, but stole the third set 25-20 for their first game win against the Tigers since 2018.

Payton Robbins scored nine kills with three blocks, 16 digs, and three aces in the loss. Layla Lenex had three kills and five blocks. Tehya Johnson had two kills, two aces, and 23 assists. Jacelyn Smith scored seven kills and two blocks. Charley Fahland had two aces and 17 digs, and Kasidy Holland had seven kills and three digs.

Sandite Volleyball will travel to Regent Prep Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Cross Country

The Lady Sandite varsity cross country team placed 11th in a 5K run at Edmond Deer Creek, August 21st, led by Jazmin Lopez in fifth place out of 105 runners with a time of 23:13.98. 

The boys team didn’t have enough runners to place as a team, but Noah Hanlon finished in 26th with a time of 19:13.58.

The elementary girls placed third at Kiefer Saturday, August 28th. Chloe Grona won the one-mile run in 5:52.45, Josie Grona placed third in 6:19.71, and Sophie Grona placed 15th in 7:06.99.

Tough Start for Lady Sandite Softball

The Charles Page High School fast-pitch softball team had a tough start to the season, going 0-2 in their first week before canceling a game against Sperry and pulling out of the Broken Arrow weekend tournament due to injuries and COVID protocols. 

Sand Springs hosted Tahlequah Monday, August 9th and fell 8-6 despite out-hitting the Tigers 12 to 8. Down 1-0, Jolee McNally tied it up on a bases-loaded single in the second inning, then Raegan Rector gave her team the lead with a two-run single. 

Tahlequah tied it up in the fourth and made it 6-3 in the fifth on a pair of errors at first base. Ashlyn Clark scored on a sacrifice bunt from Kelsi Hilton in the fifth, but Tahlequah added a two-run single in the sixth to pad their lead. Clark put two more on the board in the sixth with a two-run single, but couldn’t muster up another run before the game drew to a close.

On Tuesday at Owasso the Sandites were swept 8-0 and lost in a six-inning run-rule walkoff. Lauren Hammock and Hilton made two hits apiece, but all five Sandite baserunners were left stranded. Freshman ace Preslee Downing struck out eight Sandites to lift the Rams to the win.

Rector got the loss against Tahlequah with eight hits, four strikeouts, and three walks, while Hilton got the loss against Owasso with 13 hits, three strikeouts, and one walk.

Sandite Softball will return to action at the Rogers State University festival Thursday with games against Lincoln Christian and Adair, then will play the Stillwater festival on Friday.

CPHS Softball Season Preview: Sandites Look for New Leaders

Losing only three seniors would typically be a good thing for a softball team, since most of the unit is still intact. Unfortunately for Charles Page High School, their three recent graduates were All-State talent that included their best hitter and their best pitcher.

The team is used to reloading, however, and Head Coach Shelli Brown figures they will still be in good shape as they enter her 25th season at the helm. The team has made it to the State Tournament ten times in Brown’s career, including five straight from 2015 to 2019, but last year they came up one win short in a 25-7 campaign.

“It always helps when you have a group that's been there, and this senior group has been there,” says Brown. “So by not getting to go last year they've experienced both sides: the excitement of winning and getting to go, and the disappointment of losing and staying home. I'm hoping that will be a factor and that experience will come into play.”

This year’s State Tournament will be extra exciting as it returns to USA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City after being at Firelake Arena in Shawnee the past few years. The largest softball stadium in the country, the Hall of Fame complex also hosts the Women’s College World Series every year.

“It’s always a special place to play,” says Brown. “This senior group, they've been playing at Firelake. I think hopefully that will be a motivating factor for the kids.”

First they have to get there, and that means going through a new district that includes two returning State Tournament teams. Bartlesville, Bixby, Enid, and Putnam City North will be among their district rivals, as will be a combined team from Booker T. Washington and Tulsa Memorial. Jenks, Stillwater, and Sand Springs figure to be the most likely District Championship contenders. Stillwater upset the Sandites twice at their home Regional last year to hold them back from State.

The girls played their first round of scrimmages this past week against Berryhill, Skiatook and Sperry, and will host Skiatook, Oologah, and Mannford for three straight days of 10:00 a.m. scrimmages Wednesday through Friday. 

“I've seen improvement every day between practices and scrimmages,” says Brown. “The kids are getting to know each other. That's one of the things we always talk about is the team chemistry changes every year with graduation and new kids coming in. I think the kids have been working really hard and trying to get their team chemistry and getting each other's timing down and the kind of coverage and range that each kid has when we have different scenarios.”

“We've got four girls that I've been pitching and so each time a pitcher comes in, the dynamics of the position players and outfielders change, but we've been making progress. I thought that this week, each day we got a little bit better.”

The team will be adapting for the loss of Madison Lee, Aliyah Taff, and Drew Hawkins, who were all three All-State selections.

“You just have to kind of find the kids that can step into some of those spots and take on those new roles. That's something we talk about too, is that every year your role is going to change. And so now my junior group is going to be seniors, you know, there's five of them, and they've had some past senior leadership to watch and observe and learn from that have been really good. They work hard and they're good kids, and they've been really trying to step up and take on their leadership role, so I've been really pleased watching them.”

Figuring out their new ace pitcher will be one challenge in the coming week after losing Taff. Junior Nataley Crawford will bring a lot of experience, earning a 7-1 record with a 3.2 ERA last season. They also have sophomore Kelsi Hilton, left-handed senior Raegan Rector, and freshman Addy Hughes to draw from. 

Reloading on offense is another challenge after losing Lee, who hit .532 last season, and Hawkins who was .409. Last year’s team was one of the best slugging units in school history.

“I think instead of being able to get a home run, I think we're going to be looking more at base hits,” says Brown. “We have a lot of lefties in the lineup right now. We've got a couple of freshmen, Ashlyn Clark and Kenzie King that have been getting some time. They’re lefties and they’re real fast. And so I think with time, Ashlyn Clark and them can probably look like a Madison Lee. They've got the speed and I think with experience and age, they're gonna do really well.”

As for the senior leadership, the team will lean on Avery Tanner, JoLee McNally, Raegan Rector, Lauren Hammock, and Taylor Skipper.

“Lauren Hammock has really stepped up in scrimmages and done really well in putting the ball in play and scoring runs,” says Brown. “So I hope that will continue. I've seen some real improvement and progress there. And then Taylor Skipper. She's a kid every team needs. if I need her to go play first, she’ll go play first. if I need her to get behind home plate, She's just gonna do it. She’s probably a morale booster for our kids. She's always positive and I think trying to stay positive and work with the team. All those seniors have been doing something in one way or another either by leadership on the field or actions or what they're saying vocally out there.”

Sandite Softball will kick off the season Monday, August 9th with a 5:30 p.m. home game against Tahlequah, followed by an away game against Owasso Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
