CPHS Football Halftime Report: Sandites trail 21-6, Wilkerson scores TD

The Class 6A-II No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School football team (2-6, 1-4) traveled to No. 8 Sapulpa (5-3, 2-3) Friday for a Highway 97 Rivalry match-up on the Chieftains’ Senior Night. Despite suffering significant losses on both sides of the ball, the home team was still heavily favored coming into the game, and is holding onto a 21-6 halftime lead.
Mistakes plagued the Sandites, whose frequent high snaps resulted in short awkward runs as well as a lost fumble, a short punt, and a missed PAT. Despite the two score deficit, Sand Springs outgained their foes in total first half yardage.
Sand Springs turned over its first possession on a fumbled hike, recovered by Kandon Williams at the Sandite 31-yard line. Sapulpa capitalized with a six-play drive and scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Zac Mason for the lead.
The two teams traded punts till the final minute of the first quarter, when Kaivon Mortazavi missed a 43-yard field goal attempt.
Two punts later and the Sandites finally got on the board with a methodical fourteen-play 76-yard march, scoring on a one-yard run from Trey Wilkerson. A bobbled hike resulted in a short kick that failed to even reach the endzone, and the visitors still trailed 7-6.
The Chieftains blew up the final minutes, scoring their second touchdown on a trick play, with Mason throwing a lateral to Marcus Esparza, who found Kenyon Kahmeyer for 49 yards and a touchdown.
The Sandites broke out their own playbook, with Ty Pennington handing the ball off to backup QB Braden Foster, who hit Keaton Campbell for 40 yards on the first play of the drive. The team’s third fumble of the night was fortunately recovered by Ryan Johnson, and they converted on their next play. They wouldn’t be so lucky on the following play, as Tyyee Atkison briefly broke into the Chieftain red zone before Kahmyer stripped the ball to set up another scoring drive.
This time the hungry Cheiftains carved out 75 yards in five plays, scoring on a 27 yard pass from Mason to Williams. Mortazavi was three-for-three on PATs, and the home team took a comfortable margin into the locker room.
Pennington was 8-15-97-0 passing in the first half, while Mason was 6-9-68-0.
