CPHS Volleyball: No. 9 Owasso sweeps No. 12 Sand Springs 3-0

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (16-13, 4-4) suffered a 3-0 sweep at the hands of No. 9 Owasso (14-13, 6-2) in a Frontier Valley Conference match Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The Sandites endured their worst defeat since 2013 in set one, falling 25-5 with no kills and only eight digs. Owasso took a 12-0 lead before Vanessa Wyrick combined on back-to-back blocks with Mackenzie Harris and Cloe Campfield. The Rams committed only two errors in the game, and Wyrick served an ace late in the set.

Game two was far closer as Sand Springs stepped up on both offense and defense and the Rams committed far more mistakes. Sand Springs committed only seven errors to Owasso’s eleven, but the Rams churned out fourteen kills and four aces and the Sandites only scored eleven points in the 25-22 loss. The game tied at 15-15 after an ace from Campfield, but the visitors rattled off three more kills and never gave up the lead again.

Owasso got off to another fast start in game three, taking a 6-1 lead. Sand Springs stayed competitive, cutting it to 12-11 with a five-point run that included blocks from Madison Burris, Devree Youngblood, and Wyrick, and an ace from Raylynn Mong. The Rams soon went on a four-point run for a 19-14 lead and rolled to a 25-17 victory.

Owasso senior Mallory Hendrix led all scorers with twelve kills, and Addy Berry had a match-best four aces. Campfield led the Sandites with five kills, Burris had six assists, Wyrick scored five blocks and two aces, and Madison Blaylock had fifteen digs.

Sand Springs will play their last home match of the season Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when they host No. 16 Ponca City (12-12) for Senior Night. Owasso will end the regular season next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. with a conference road game against Booker T. Washington (8-15, 1-7).

CPHS Softball: Sandites upset District Champs 2-0 to earn home Regional

Owasso didn’t have much to prove Monday evening at the Sandite Softball Complex, but for Charles Page High School it was a crucial game with major post-season implications. The Lady Sandites rose to the occasion with a 2-0 payback win against the Rams, who had beaten Sand Springs 8-3 last month.

Click here to view our photo gallery from the game.

Owasso (21-11, 10-2) already had the District Title on lock, but the win positioned the Sandites (18-10, 9-3) at second in the standings, edging out Jenks (18-9, 9-3) on run differential for the right to host a Regional Tournament. Sand Springs has hosted and won four consecutive Regional Championships. Owasso has hosted five straight Regional playoffs, and has won the past three.

Sand Springs took the lead right out of the gate as Madison Lee hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first before scoring on a wild pitch. They had plenty of chances to score after that, but didn’t knock in the second run till the fifth.

The Sandites stranded two in the third and one in the fourth before Makenna Skaggs hit a double and scored on an RBI single from Raegan Rector. They loaded the bases later that inning but stranded the side after two forces at home and a ground ball to first. They stranded another runner in the sixth.

The visitors stranded two in the first, three in the third and one in the fourth with only four total hits. It was their lowest hitting performance of the season in seven-inning games.

Aliyah Taff (10-5, 14-11) got the win on the mound with two strikeouts and no walks. Lily Shaw got the start and the loss, giving up five hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Avery Tallman pitched four hits, no walks, and one strikeout in two innings of relief.

Sand Springs will play two non-district tune up games this week before Regionals. They will host Collinsville (22-5) Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. for Senior Night, then will travel to Oologah (26-2) Thursday at 5:00 p.m.

Owasso will host a double-header Saturday, playing Lone Grove (22-3) at 12:00 p.m. and Stillwater (9-14) at 3:00 p.m.

Final District 6A-3 Standings

9-3 Jenks (18-9)

CPHS Softball: Sandites run-rule Jenks 11-1, Usher hits home run against Jay

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (17-10, 8-3) went 2-1 this past weekend, splitting games at the Tahlequah Tournament on Friday before winning an 11-1 district game against Jenks (17-9, 8-3) on Saturday. The payback win over the Trojans positioned the Sandites to potentially take second in the district.

Jenks previously beat Sand Springs 9-6 in August, but the Sandites outhit the Trojans 8-4 and benefited from three Jenks errors and eight walks for the lopsided run-rule win. Aliyah Taff (9-5, 13-11) got the win in the pitcher’s circle with two walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Jordyn Pipkin took the loss for the Trojans with seven hits, two strikeouts, and three walks.

The Trojans took their first and only lead in the top of the third with a solo home run from Pipkin, but Sand Springs loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and took the lead with a pair of Trojan mistakes. Sabrina Usher was hit by pitch to walk in Makenna Skaggs, and Reagan Rector scored on an error.

Sand Springs blew the game wide open in the fifth. Taff hit a 2RBI single to score Rector and Madison Lee and Jolee McNally scored on an error. Drew Hawkins hit an RBI single to score Brooklyn Harper, Rector hit a 2RBI single to score Avery Tanner and Hawkins, and Skaggs scored on a wild pitch for the 9-1 lead.

In the sixth inning Taff hit a double and courtesy runner Harper scored on a wild pitch. Tanner received a walk, stole second base, took third on the wild pitch, and scored the game winner on a bunt from Hawkins.

Jenks and Sand Springs are tied 8-3 in district action with one game left, and Sand Springs has the edge on run differential. The two teams are vying for the right to host a Regional Tournament, and it’ll come down to their Monday evening games. If both teams win, or both teams lose, Sand Springs will host. If Jenks can hold off Shawnee (12-17, 6-5) at 6:00 p.m. and Sand Springs falls to Owasso (21-10, 10-1) at 5:00 p.m., then the Trojans will get the home playoff. Sand Springs has hosted and won four-straight Regional Tournaments.

On Friday the Sandites played two games at the festival-style Tahlequah Tournament. They won 9-1 against Jay (6-19) in game one, but fell 7-0 to Moore (20-8). The games ran on a timer and only lasted four innings apiece.

Taff got the win against Jay with three hits, one strikeout, and one walk in four innings. Marsis Foreman took the loss with seven hits, one strikeout, and eight walks in three innings.

Jay scored their lone run in the top of the first as Foreman singled and stole home. Usher hit her 11th home run of the season to bring in Lee and McNally in the bottom of the inning, and Felicity Horn hit an RBI single to bring in Skaggs.

Sand Springs loaded the bases in the second and Taff hit a 2RBI single to score Lee and McNally. Usher scored on a ground ball from Horn. Hawkins scored on a single from Rector in the third inning, and Rector scored the final run of the game on a ground ball from McNally.

Mackenzie Bechtold (5-3, 9-3) took the loss against Moore, throwing eight hits, one strikeout, and one walk in four innings. Morgan Max got the win with one hit, five strikeouts, and three walks in three innings. Ashlynn Haley pitched two hits and a strikeout in one inning.

Horn, Tanner and Hawkins were the only Sandites to notch hits against the Lions, and Horn and Hawkins had doubles.

CPHS Football: Sandites beat Shawnee 21-19 on Homecoming, Snodgrass scores 2 TDs

The Class 6A No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (2-2, 1-0) won their Homecoming game Friday night at Memorial Stadium 21-19 over No. 13 Shawnee (1-3, 0-1) to kick off district action. The Sandites led by 21-12 to start the fourth quarter before the Wolves began to rally for a thrilling fourth-quarter showdown.

Sand Springs outscored their foes 7-6 in the first and second quarters and won the third quarter 7-0 before being shut out in the fourth. Senior standout Jacob Snodgrass produced the Sandites’ first two scores on Wildcat runs, while sophomore quarterback Ty Pennington threw a pass to Daren Hawkins in the third quarter.

Shawnee sophomore Karsen Conaway was 13-31-174-1 with touchdown passes to Cyn’Cere Spencer and Jaylon Orange, and Orange also ran in a score. Extra points were the deal-breaker for the Wolves, as Ian Johnson missed his first PAT kick, and Alex Turner stopped a two-point run attempt by Spencer in the second quarter.

Both teams punted their opening possessions and Sand Springs was first on the scoreboard with an 8-play 51-yard drive, capped by Snodgrass’s five-yard run. The Wolves responded with a 6-play 66-yard drive, scoring on a 45-yard reception by Orange through blown coverage.

Three punts later and the visitors took their first and only lead of the night with a 10-play 88-yard drive and ten-yard scoring run from Orange. The home team quickly got back out front with an 8-play 51-yard drive and one-yard scoring run from Snodgrass for the 14-12 lead to end the half.

Drake Fain and Terik Meschkat combined on a sack to force a turnover on downs in the second half, setting up a 14-play 67-yard drive for the Sandites. Junior Daren Hawkins, who led the Sandites in receiving yards and touchdowns last season, returned to the turf for the first time this season to immediate success after a preseason injury. He was targeted three times on the drive, resulting in two catches for 30 yards, a first down, and a touchdown. Snodgrass nearly had his third score of the night on a three-yard wildcat run, but it was called back for holding, setting up the 13-yard pass to Hawkins.

The Sandite defense continued to come up strong throughout the second half, but the offense stalled out. Lane Webster made a sack on fourth-down to stall the Wolves in the Sandite red zone. Zane Christopher came up with a fumble three plays later to return the Wolves to the red zone, but Brooks Dudley tipped a pass and Ethan Sartin came away with the pick.

Shawnee forced a three-and-out, turned the ball over on downs, forced another three-and-out, then put together the final scoring drive of the game. The 13-play 36-yard push had big plays called back for both sides of the ball.

On the first play of the possession Conaway pitched a lateral to Orange, who connected with Spencer for a 36-yard strike that was called back for a false start. Seven plays later Caden Harris returned an interception 40 yards before it was called back due to pass interference. Sand Springs gave up two first downs on personal fouls to keep the Wolves in the game, and Conaway finally found Spencer from 13 yards out. Johnson’s PAT was the final point of the game.

The Wolves attempted an onside kick, but the Sandites fielded it aptly. They were held to a quick three-and-out, however, and the Wolves threatened once again. They marched 24 yards but ran out of time as a deep pass fell incomplete.

Pennington was 13-27-143-0 on the night, with Snodgrass as his primary target. Snodgrass was 6-48 receiving and Blake Jones led the ground game with 21 carries for 86 yards. Zach Heinen was 3-for-3 on extra points for the Sandites, and is 11-of-11 in his debut season. Keaton Campbell averaged 25 yards per kick return, Jerret Haley led in tackles with 9, Bryson Chase had a team-high 3 pass breakups, and Dudley led in tackles for loss, with 2.

Sand Springs will take to the road next Friday at No. 6 Muskogee (3-0, 1-0), while Shawnee will travel to No. 12 Ponca City (2-2, 0-1).

Prior to the game, the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew raised $1,434 for Sandite Wrestling and Raegan Foster was named Homecoming Queen. At half time Sandite Soccer standout Jack Bratcher kicked a 17-yard field goal to win a free dinner for ten from Rib Crib.
