Sandite Elementary wins 2nd Annual Case Cross Country Invitational (with Photo Gallery)

Sand Springs held its 2nd Annual Case Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Case Community Park, hosting dozens of teams in age divisions from elementary through high school. The Sandites won their first team title at the home event with a first place finish in the Elementary race.

The Case Invitational featured Varsity, Junior Varsity, 8th Grade, and 7th Grade races in both genders. The Elementary Boys and Girls races were combined to expedite the day after the time-keeping company arrived 45 minutes late. Not included in the event was the Conner’s Classic 5K Open, which ran for eight years before being canceled this season.

The Sandite Boys placed sixth of eighteen teams in the Varsity 5K. Sophomore Alejandro Lopez was the top performer with a 19:48.12 time for 29th place. Lopez, Sam English, Noah Hanlon, Dalton Wilcox, and Caleb James all ran season-bests.

Sand Springs placed ninth of ten teams in the Varsity Girls 5K led by sophomore Jazmin Lopez in 18th place with a time of 23:46.67, knocking more than a minute off her prior week’s race. Erika Baker, Victoria Baker, and Ty Davis also improved over their Broken Arrow performances.

The Sandites did not have a full JV Girls team, but Madison Chambers finished 24th in 32:08.63. Both Chambers and Sarah Rigsby ran season-bests. The JV Boys placed eighth of ten teams, led by Alex Newport in 23:16.53 for 50th place. David Rigsby knocked thirteen seconds off his season-best.

Malayna Garcia placed 13th in the 8th Grade Girls one-mile run in 6:38.33. Dallas Potter placed 83rd in the 8th Grade Boys one-mile in 8:26.61. Kennedy Shirley placed 59th in the 7th Grade Girls one-mile in 8:51.95 and Colt Cothran placed 69th in the 7th Grade Boys one-mile in 8:43.18. Sand Springs does not have full lineups at the Junior High levels.

Sand Springs had three top-five finishers in the mixed elementary one-mile race. Griffin Sensintaffar (5th Grade) was second in 6:14.81, Brynlee Durburrow (6th) was third in 6:20.00, and Chloe Grona (4th) was fifth in 6:30.82. Alliyah Watts, Avery Nolen, Colton Chambers, Landon Durburrow, Caden Ketcher, Dean Earnest, and Memo Borunda all improved on their season-best performances.

The Sandite Varsity teams will return to action September 28th at the 31st Annual Fayetteville Chile Pepper Festival, while Junior Varsity and K-8th will compete at the 34th Annual Holland Hall Invitational that day.

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (1-1) rolled to a 35-0 shutout of No. 15 Putnam City (0-2) Friday at Memorial Stadium.

CPHS Softball: Sandites roll Muskogee 13-4 in district road game

The Charles Page High School fast pitch softball team (15-8, 7-2) won a district road game in Muskogee (5-9, 5-7) Tuesday afternoon, rolling over the Roughers 13-4 in a game that could have been much worse for the home team. Muskogee gave up fifteen hits and three walks, and committed six errors.

Muskogee was first on the board with a 2RBI single from D’Asia Brown to score Jordan Simmons and Shania Henry in the bottom of the first. Jaden Jordan batted in Avery Tanner in the third inning and Drew Hawkins scored on a hit from Jolee McNally to tie it. Isyss Patton hit a triple in the bottom of the third and scored on a single from Simmons to reclaim the Rougher advantage.

Sand Springs took their first lead in the top of the fifth. Hawkins doubled in Felicity Horn to tie it and scored on a single from Madison Lee to make it 4-3. Simmons hit an RBI single to score Katlyn Clark for the third tie and final Rougher run of the night in the bottom of the inning.

The game stayed all knotted up till the seventh when Sand Springs blew it wide open. McNally, Sabrina Usher, Hawkins, Jordan, and Lee hit singles and Tanner had a double. Two errors and a walk set up the visitors for a nine-run inning. Lee, McNally, Usher, Makenna Skaggs, Horn, Tanner, Hawkins, and Jordan scored runs in the inning.

Mackenzie Bechtold (5-2, 9-2) got the win in the pitcher’s circle with four hits and one walk in three innings. Aliyah Taff (7-4, 11-10) picked up her first save of the season with three hits, three strikeouts, and no walks in four innings.

Sand Springs softball will host a district battle with Shawnee (9-17, 3-5) Thursday at 5:00 p.m. They previously defeated the Wolves 7-1 last month. Muskogee will play Owasso (15-6) Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the first round of the Tahlequah Sequoyah Fall Classic. They were swept 7-6 and 8-4 by the Rams in district action.

Owasso (15-6, 8-1) snapped the Sandites’ eight-game winning streak to move into first place in district standings. The Rams outhit the Sandites 12-5 with Avery Tallman in the pitcher’s circle. Tallman struck out three Sandites and walked none.

Jaycee Hampton scored on a single from Paige Knight, and Knight scored on a double from Payton Compton for an Owasso 2-0 first inning lead. In the second inning Callee Gregory and Knight hit singles to bring in Allene Dennis and Teagan Denny.

Tanner, Lee, and McNally loaded the bases in the third inning with a trio of singles. Tanner and Lee scored on a ground ball from Usher and Usher scored on an error to make it a one run game, but that was the last of the Sandite offense.

Dennis scored on a single from Gregory in the fourth, Madi Norton scored on a single from Compton in the sixth, then Compton and Annslee Leeviraphan scored on a single from Chloee Sams for the final points of the game.

Bechtold (4-2, 8-2) got the start and the loss for Sand Springs with six hits and one walk in two innings. Taff (7-4, 11-10) threw six hits, four walks, and one strikeout in four innings of relief.

CPHS Football Preview: Sand Springs celebrates 100th anniversary Friday against Greenwood

The Class 6A-II No. 11 ranked Charles Page High School varsity football team (1-1) will host the defending back-to-back Arkansas 6A State Champions from Greenwood (2-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. Prior to kickoff the Sandites will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sand Springs Football with an alumni event.

Former Sand Springs football players and managers, cheerleaders, dancers, color guard, and band members are invited for refreshments from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. in the Sandite Room of the Fine Arts Building, located near the south end zone of Memorial Stadium.

Alumni will be allowed to tour the locker rooms and the sideline beginning at 6:15 p.m. Four minutes prior to halftime alumni are invited to gather at the northeast corner of the stadium where they will be sorted by decade, then will be introduced to the crowd and will get to walk across the field.

Also prior to the game, the Church That Matters Tailgate Crew will be selling hot dogs, burgers, and chicken sandwiches with chips and a drink for only $6.00. The event will benefit Sandite Cheer. Last week they raised $1851 for the Quarterback Club.

Tickets for Sandite Football games are $5.00 for students and $7.00 for adults.

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 3-7 season but prior to that was riding a program-best six straight years of playoff appearances. They are 64-68 under thirteenth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard. The Sandites own one gold ball, from 1966, and made their last State Finals appearance in 2015.

Greenwood went 12-1 last year, losing their season opener before winning out for a 6A State Title. The Bulldogs own nine Championships (2000, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2017, and 2018). They also played for titles in 2015 and 2016. Greenwood has lost only three games in the past four seasons and haven’t lost two in a year since 2014. Rick Jones is 177-24 in his sixteenth season.

Coach Jones recently commented on the Sandites to Richard White with Greenwooddogpound.com

“‘I’ve been there a couple times,’ he said. ‘I know quite a bit about them. I coached in Tulsa for 12 years and I’m familiar with them. We played them when I was at Tulsa Union and Broken Arrow. They are tough kids. They have a great wrestling program. They are always physical and tough. They’re not afraid of anybody.’”

Last year was the first-ever meeting between Sand Springs and Greenwood, with the Bulldogs prevailing 49-13. Greenwood held the Sandites to 45 passing yards, Sand Springs held the Dogs to 60 rushing yards. The visitors ran for 234 yards and the home team passed for 244 yards.

Greenwood scored on the first play from scrimmage then forced a punt and scored on the return and never slowed down, taking a 42-0 lead before letting the visitors on the board. Sand Springs had two red zone turnovers on downs before averting the shutout a minute before the fourth quarter.

This Season

The Sandites were hammered 41-7 in their season opener at Mansfield Summit (3-0). They didn’t have too much difficulty moving the ball, but threw two picks and gave up three turnovers in the red zone.

After a bye week the boys rolled to their first shutout in four years, 35-0 against Putnam City (0-2). They did all of their damage by air with 259 yards and five touchdowns, but were held to a 31-75 rushing performance. Defensively they held the Pirates to 80 total yards.

Greenwood pitched a second half shutout in a 38-10 win over Fort Smith Northside (2-1), holding the Grizzlies to only 30 yards passing. The team scored four touchdowns by air, one on the ground, and had one field goal. In week two they won 44-14 against Fort Smith Southside (0-2) with three passing scores, three rushing scores and a field goal.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites remain undefeated at home, beat Booker T. Washington 3-1

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (13-8, 4-2) won its tenth home game of the season Tuesday evening against No. 17 Booker T. Washington (8-12, 1-5) to remain undefeated in the Ed Dubie Field House. Sand Springs won 3-1 in a Frontier Valley Conference match-up with sets of 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, and 25-14.

It looked like Sand Springs would run away with the first set on two different occasions, but both times the Hornets came buzzing back. Cloe Campfield and Jacelyn Smith scored kills and Campfield added an ace for a 4-1 lead that the visitors quickly negated. Then Campfield and Vanessa Wyrick scored kills in a five-point run and Wyrick combined on a block with McKenzie Harris to make it 12-7 before the Hornets rattled off five of their own to tie it again. The set tied ten times and the Hornets led by as much as 15-13, but their last advantage came at 18-17. Sand Springs held their visitors at bay in a close exchange for a 25-23 win, capped by Madison Burris’s first kill of the night. 

Game two was total Hornet domination right out of the gate, but ended in a valiant comeback attempt. Wyrick and Raylynn Mong combined on a block to start the set, then Wyrick and Campfield blocked to tie it at 3-3, but things quickly unraveled from there. Tia Gripado served three aces in a five-point run before Burris broke it up with a kill, then Ruby Vance added two more aces. Emma Pappas aced for a 16-7 lead, Burris recorded another kill, then Leia Turner and Senna Stephens hit kills for a ten-point lead. 

A Gripado kill made it 22-12 for the visitors, and most teams would have given up by that point. But Sand Springs won ten of the next thirteen rallies and only lost 25-22. Burris scored two kills, Mong scored one, and Campfield aced before Makenzie Johns killed to make it 24-17. The home team went on a five-point run from there with kills from Wyrick and Devree Youngblood and an ace from Madison Blaylock before Gripado secured the victory. 

Set three started the way of the second, with the visitors storming out to a 12-3 advantage with aces from Vance, Gripado, and Bridget Johnson. The Sandites had to play from the hole till Burris tied it at 18-18 after a 10-2 run by the home team. Burris gave her team their first lead at 20-19 with an ace, Taryn McIntosh put the visitors back up 23-21, then the two teams exchanged errors till a Campfield kill and a Hornet error ended the 27-25 Sandite victory.

Set four was a breeze for the Sandites, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead with kills from Wyrick and Youngblood and an ace from Mong. They went on a seven-point run for a 20-9 lead and led by as much as 23-10 before the Hornets won four of the final six against the Sandite second string.

Burris recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 assists, both team-highs. Youngblood and Campfield led the Sandites in digs with 21 apiece. Gripado was the top-scorer for the Hornets with 13 kills and four aces, while Vance had a match-high six aces.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at the Mustang Tournament against No. 6 Mustang (16-3), No. 16 Choctaw (8-5), and No. 20 Enid (7-9). The Hornets will host 5A No. 8 Bishop Kelley (10-7) Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

Oklahoma High School Football Rankings: Class 6A-II Week Three

1. Bixby (2-0, Last week No. 1).

   • The defending 6A-2 State Champions are coming off a bye week and riding a 14-game win streak. They won their last game 57-7 against the 6A-I Runners Up from Jenks (1-2). Mason Williams was 15-17-289 passing with four touchdowns, Braylin Presley was 9-108 rushing for four touchdowns, and Brennan Presley was 4-144 with two touchdown receptions and two pick sixes.

   • The Spartans will travel to Putnam City (0-2), who they defeated 64-0 last year.

2. Stillwater (2-0, Last week No. 2).

   • The Pioneers rolled over Norman North (0-2) 55-14 in their home opener. With both offense and defense ranked in the top 3 in the division, Stillwater took a 41-0 halftime lead before easing up on the Timberwolves. Gunnar Gundy passed 15-22-295 for four touchdowns and Qwontrel Walker carried 19-173 for three scores.

   • Stillwater will travel to Southmoore (0-2) Thursday at 7:00 p.m. They beat the Sabercats 49-15 last season. Southmoore is coming off a 46-7 rivalry loss to Westmoore.

3. Lawton (2-0, Last week No. 5).

   • Lawton prevailed 36-21 against their crosstown rivals from MacArthur (1-1) Friday, shutting out the Highlanders 13-0 in the second half.

   • The Wolverines will take on another rival Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Eisenhower (0-2). They beat the Eagles 42-13 last season. Ike is coming off a 50-25 loss to Choctaw.

4. Booker T. Washington (1-2, Last week No. 3).

   • The Hornets fell 17-6 to Bentonville (3-0).

   • Washington will take a bye week before traveling to Bartlesville (0-2) to start district action. They throttled the Bruins 43-6 last season.

5. Del City (1-1, Last week No. 4).

   • Del City fell 49-19 to the defending 5A State Champs from Carl Albert (2-0), despite totaling nearly 250 more yards than the Titans, due to four crippling turnovers and 118 penalty yards.

   • The Eagles will host Bartlesville (0-2) next week. They beat the Bruins 33-7 last season.

6. Muskogee (2-0, Last week No. 6).

   • The Roughers eked out a 19-12 come-from-behind road win in Midwest City (0-3). The Bombers led 12-0 after the first quarter, but were shut out after that. Ty Williams was 6-12-74 passing and 16-110 rushing for one touchdown, and Jimmie Coleman carried 21-93 for two scores.

   • Muskogee will host Putnam City West (0-2) Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their home opener. They beat the Patriots 34-29 last year.

7. Sapulpa (2-0, Last week No. 8).

   • The Chieftains doubled down on Claremore (1-1), winning 49-24 after initially falling behind 17-7. Eli Williams carried for 244 yards and four touchdowns and was 5-10-61 passing. Marcus Esparza was 18-137 with two scores. Ja Mario Jones scored on a 50-yard interception return to put the defense on the board.

   • The Chieftains will host East Central (1-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m. in their home debut. The Cardinals are coming off a 7-0 win in Stilwell (0-2). Sapulpa won last year’s meeting 49-12.

8. Choctaw (2-0, Last week No. 9).

   • The Yellowjackets pounded Lawton Eisenhower (0-2) 50-25, leading 50-7 after the first half. Thad Williams threw five touchdowns in the dominant win.

   • Choctaw will face one of its toughest foes of the season Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host a Putnam North (2-0) team that outscored its first two opponents 118-7.

9. Midwest City (0-3, Last week No. 7).

   • The Bombers are 0-3 for the first time since 2012 after a 19-12 loss to Muskogee. Xavier Jackson was 2-6-100 with one passing TD. Bradley Langford also passed for a touchdown.

   • Midwest City will take a bye week to prepare for a district road game against Lawton (2-0). They beat the Wolverines 56-45 last year.

10. Edmond Deer Creek (1-1, Last week No. 10).

    • The Antlers got a big win under their belts to start the season, 45-14 against Southmoore (0-1), but were rolled over 49-7 by Norman (2-0). Tyler Travis was held to 17-86 rushing after a 200-yard performance against Southmoore. Elijah Allen ran in the only score.

    • Deer Creek will travel to Edmond Memorial (0-2) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They defeated the Bulldogs 34-13 last year.

11. Sand Springs (1-1, Last week No. 12).

    • Ty Pennington was 13-21-184-0 with four touchdowns Friday in a 35-0 rout of Putnam City (0-2) for the Sandites’ first shutout in four years. The Sandite defense held Putnam to only 80 offensive yards.

    • Sand Springs will take on a whole different beast Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they host the back-to-back Arkansas 6A State Champions from Greenwood (2-0).

12. Ponca City (2-0, Last week No. 15).

    • The Wildcats are 2-0 for the first time since 2005 after a 17-7 win over Guthrie (1-2). Sam McKinney scored two touchdowns and Spencer Ball kicked his third field goal of the season.

    • Ponca will travel to Collinsville (1-1) Friday at 7:00 p.m. They were shutout 28-0 by the Cardinals last year.

13. Shawnee (1-1, Last week No. 13).

    • Shawnee recovered from a 49-21 loss to Choctaw by winning 33-23 over Guthrie (1-1), then took a bye week.

    • They will host Carl Albert (2-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Titans won 47-7 last year.

14. Bartlesville (0-2, Last week No. 11).

    • The Bruins are still looking for their first win after falling 20-17 to Collinsville (1-1) in overtime. Bartlesville led 14-7 late in the fourth, but Ben Winters threw a pick-six to tie it. They gave up three fumbles and two interceptions.

    • Bartlesville will get its first big test Friday at 7:00 p.m. when they travel to Del City (1-1). They fell 33-7 to the Eagles last year.

15. Putnam City West (0-2, Last week No. 14).

    • The Patriots lost their eighth-straight game 68-7 to Putnam North (2-0) and will travel to Muskogee Friday at 7:00 p.m.

16. Putnam City (0-2, Last week No. 16).

    • The Pirates lost their thirteenth-straight game 35-0 to Sand Springs and still haven’t scored this season. Tyrece Romesberg was 3-10-30-1 passing and the offense was held to 80 yards on 49 plays.

    • Putnam will have a far tougher time when they host Bixby (2-0) Friday at 7:00 p.m., who defeated them 64-0 last year.
