Zane Basma takes first place at Bobby Lyons Invitational

Despite sitting out several key starters, the Charles Page High School wrestling squad was still more than capable of finishing third at their home tournament behind the #1 teams in 6A and 5A. After upsetting the #1 Broken Arrow Tigers Thursday night, the most important thing for the Sandites to do now is remain healthy for Regionals, State, and Dual State. #8 Riley Weir, John Jiminez, #2 Trace Fleischman, #7 Lane Lettich, and Delvin Jordan all set out the tournament to rest and recover, and several backups got to see their first varsity action of the season.

160 #4 Zane Basma (17-9) won his first tournament of the season, pinning Seth Steinke (Cascia Hall) in 3:01 and Alec Puckett (Bixby) in 2:29. Gabe Evans of Broken Arrow got a rematch after being pinned in Thursday night's dual, and fared slightly better this time, but was defeated 6-0 to seal Basma's trip to the finals against Tony Connor of Collinsville. Basma won that match 11-5.

At 170 Bryton Beck (5-11) gave up pins of 3:46 and 2:16 to Brad Bell (Okmulgee) and Stephen Shibley (Sapulpa), respectively.

182 Mike Brown (0-2) was pinned in 1:30 by #2 Jared Kerr of Bixby and lost 14-5 to Chris Connor, also of Bixby. Mike Martinez (0-2) also made his varsity debut at 182, but was pinned in 0:41 by Zach Wellman of Bartlesville, and in 1:54 by Paul Fleming of Cascia Hall. 

At 195 #8 Zack Sims (14-15) gave up a 1:55 pin to 5A State Runner-Up Roc Robbins of Collinsville in the opening round, then accepted a forfeit from Broken Arrow's Skylar Haynes. Sims wrapped up the Friday wrestling with a 1:48 pin of Cascia Hall's Hunter Hedrick. On Saturday, Sims lost 7-2 to #4 Cody Adams of Bixby, but managed to edge out Ponca City's #6 Bradyn Presnall 4-3 for a 5th Place finish.

220 Gage Fain (5-14) was pinned in 2:26 in the opening round by Alex Cantu of Grapevine, Texas, but turned it around with two pins of his own in 2:29 against Blake Buoy (Bartlesville) and 0:59 against Dylan Dobbs of Collinsville. From there, however, Fain would be pinned in 3:46 by Baylee Perigo of Barnsdall and forced to a rematch against Cantu. This time he avoided the pin, but gave up a 7-3 decision for a 6th Place finish.

The Sandites wrestled two new guys at Heavyweight, Jace Anderson (0-2) and Dom Piper (0-2). Anderson forfeited to Sapulpa's #5 Daylan Durham, then was pinned in 0:11 by Derek Bay of Sperry. Piper was pinned in 2:25 by #1 Trenton Lieurance and in 4:52 by Jackson Wilson of Collinsville.

Beau Bratcher places first at Bobby Lyons Invitational

#2 Beau Bratcher (26-4) was the victor of 138, pinning Cascia Hall's Miles Waller in 2:37 and Ponca City's Nenebah Biggoose in 1:05. Broken Arrow's Blake Mattioda gave Bratcher the closest run for his money, only giving up a 4-1 decision, but Bratcher prevailed against both him and #4 Brody Perciful (Ponca City) in the finals with a 5-0 decision for his first championship of the season.

Gavin Garcia (0-2) made his varsity debut wrestling unattached at 145, but had to take on #8 Gabe Evans, a state qualifier from Union in the first round and was teched 16-1 in 4:58. The next battle was much closer, but Jimi Cerre of Ponca got the 5-0 decision for the win.

145 #10 Cody Mathis (8-7) had one of the highest-scoring matches of the night, running up a 17-14 decision over Barnsdall's Colten Allen, then pinned Cerre in 4:53. In the next round, however, he was defeated 5-0 by 5A State Runner-Up Justin Walker of Collinsville and bumped to the consolation bracket. Saturday morning Mathis had to take on Evans and was overcame 9-2, but he rebounded with a narrow 3-2 victory over Jacob Waits (Sperry) for a 5th Place finish. 

At 152 #2 Payton Scott (11-3) defeated Wesley Yarber (Barnsdall) 9-3 and pinned James Ott of Grapevine, TX in 1:31. Union's #5 Christian Mayhue battled valiantly before falling 5-3 to land Scott a spot in the finals against Elijah Tanner of Collinsville. Unfortunately, Scott aggravated an injury and forfeited his last match to settle for second place. Earlier this season Scott defeated Tanner 7-6 and Tanner defeated Scott 3-1 at Geary.

Daton Fix places first at Bobby Lyons Invitational, remains undefeated

At 132 #1 Daton Fix (26-0) worked his usual magic, pinning Bartlesville's Ian Hallaway in 1:01, then accepted a forfeit from Chandler Bryant of Barnsdall. #8 Dillon Wingo may be an outstanding wrestler, but few are a match for the #3 wrestler in the nation. The Broken Arrow wrestler was teched 26-11 in only 4:15, setting up Fix for one of the toughest matches of his high school career. 3A State Champion Tanner Skidgel of Cascia Hall actually took charge at the beginning of the match--briefly. Ultimately Fix found his mojo and pulled ahead for an 11-3 major decision, but that in itself is a testament to the incredible talent of Skidgel. Of Fix's 26 matches this season, 19 were decided by either pin or tech fall.

Sage Singleton (0-2) got to see his first varsity action, wrestling unattached at 138. In his first match, he was pitted against #4 Brody Perciful of Ponca City and pinned in 1:02, then narrowly gave up a 5-4 decision to Wyatt Coffman of Oologah.

Jack Karstetter takes first in Bobby Lyons Invitational

The Sandites had two wrestlers at 126. Wrestling unattached and making his season varsity debut was Ian Baustert (0-2) who was pinned in 3:27 by Grapevine, Texas's Samuel Hodges, and defeated by 6-2 decision by Kyle Jones of Oologah. 

Also at 126 was #1 Jack Karstetter (21-6) who made quick work of Sapulpa's Tanner Frew, pinning him in 1:12, then beating that time with a 0:33 pin of Jones. His next match was a lot closer, only a 6-3 decision over 3A state qualifier and fellow Team BIG member Louden Akin of Sperry. It was more than enough to earn him his way to the finals, however, where he would get a rematch against Broken Arrow's #4 Brady Mattioda. Mattioda came ready to battle, and tied him 1-1 to force overtime. The two had met thrice before, each time Karstetter came out on top by major decision. This time it was a close 3-1 sudden victory, but Karstetter still got the win and the first place finish.

Blake Sargent takes first at Bobby Lyons Invitational

After upsetting the #1 Broken Arrow Tigers Thursday night, the most important thing for the Sandites to do now is remain healthy for Regionals, State, and Dual State. #8 Riley Weir, John Jiminez, #2 Trace Fleischman, #7 Lane Lettich, and Delvin Jordan all sat out the tournament to rest and recover, and several backups got to see their first varsity action of the season.

With Weir nursing a hurt arm, the Sandites didn't wrestle anybody at 106.

At 113 Sand Springs wrestled #5 Michael Ritchey (11-11) against #9 Laif Jones of Bartlesville, and the hometown boy put forward a 3-1 decision for the win. Unfortunately in the next round he was pitted against the #3-ranked State Runner-Up Mason Naifeh of Union. Earlier this week Naifeh defeated Ritchey by a narrow 4-1 decision in the dual, but this time the Perry Champion would pull even further ahead for an 11-3 major, sending Ritchey to the consolation bracket. From there Ritchey rebounded with an 11-3 major of his own over #8 John Warford of Sapulpa, but fell 2-1 to Barnsdall's Logan Bryant and had to settle for fourth place.

Also at 113, but wrestling unattached, was junior Kenny Daniel (0-2) who made his first varsity appearance since the Bixby dual last January. Daniel was pinned in 1:37 by Bryant and 2:45 by Warford. 

120 #6 Blake Sargent (21-7) made a great opening statement with a 3:37 pin of #9 Cameron Clark of Sapulpa, then followed it up with a 6-3 decision over Devon Ball (Sperry) and a 1-0 decision against Union's Cordney Chairs to wrap up the first day's action. In the Saturday finals Sargent got a rematch against #7 TaJuan Daniels of Broken Arrow, whom he had just beaten 4-2 in overtime Thursday night. Once more the Sandite would prevail, this time 3-2 for a first place finish.

#20 Jenks Trojans upset #10 Sandites

The Charles Page High School varsity dribblers still hold their #10 ranking, but have been going in the opposite direction from where they started.  

After starting the season 7-0, the boys have given up four straight and gave up a close loss to the #20 Jenks Trojans whom they should have handled easily. 

The Sandites got on the board first with a layup by Arvionte Nichols, but TJ Washington shot three from three-point range, broken up by a Kyle Keener free throw, to make the score 9-3. Once more it would appear the Trojans were having difficulty at the score table, however, and the score was only updated to 7-3--a mistake that would not be corrected.  

The Trojan scoring frenzy continued till they had worked up a 22-9 first quarter lead.

The second quarter belonged to Sand Springs, however, as the Sandites found their mojo and doubled the home team 16-8 by half time. The visitors still trailed by 5 (three according to the scoreboard) but they were clearly on the up-and-up.  

The Sandites won the third quarter as well, but only by 12-11 and still trailed by four going into the final period.  

Both teams battled valiantly but ultimately it came down to a series of desperation fouls and the Trojans came out on top for a 53-48 finish with Washington sinking a pair of freebies for an incredible 28 point game high. 

Keener and Haddock both doubled but it was a shortage of rebounds that ultimately did the Sandites in.
