Sports Roundup: Layne Kirkendoll wins State Championship in High Jump

This story was originally written for the Sand Springs Leader.

Layne Kirkendoll came up an inch short of her 5-ft. 7-in. school-record high-jump mark Saturday afternoon in Ardmore, but she was still two inches higher than the rest of the crowd.

Five girls made it past the 5-ft. 4-in. mark, but only the Sandites’ senior leaper was able to clear the next notch up, securing her first State title and first high jump title in program history for the Sand Springs girls

The jump made Kirkendoll only the fifth Lady Sandite in school history to win a gold medal, and it was the 13th overall for the Lady Sandites.

Kirkendoll also placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 18 ft. 3 in.

Kelsi Hilton, Josie Myers, Gracie Gifford, and Jazmin Lopez placed 15th in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:55.27.

Jestin Rawlins placed fifth in discus with a distance of 148 ft. 2 in. and Matthew Shelton placed 15th in shot put with a mark of 44 ft. 3 in.

Overall, the girls placed 15th and the boys were 22nd in their first season under head coach Gloria Avey - notable improvements over the prior season’s 19th place finish for the girls and zero points scored for the boys.

Cheyenne Walden’s 1600-meter State Meet record from 2017 was finally broken, as champion Payton Hinkle and runner-up Caden Dawson both broke her 4:57.07 mark.

Several Sandites participated in the Summit League Championship at Oral Roberts University this past week.

Aden Baughman ran the second leg of ORU’s 4x400 relay team that placed second and also placed ninth in the 800-meter run.

Joel Mackey ran the first leg of the 4x100 relay team that placed fourth and also placed 15th in the 100-meter dash and 10th in the 200.

Mitchell Mefford placed 12th in discus throw and 15th in hammer throw, Victoria Baker placed 21st in the 800-meter run, and Erika Baker placed 24th in the 5K run.

Wrestling

Charles Page High School alumnus Daton Fix won gold at the Pan American freestyle wrestling championship in Acapulco, Mexico on Monday, May 9th.

The Oklahoma State redshirt junior rolled to a 3-0 sweep of the 61 kg bracket for his second Senior continental championship.

In the first round he scored an 11-0 technical fall against Puerto Rico’s Joseph Silva in 2:20, then he won 10-0 against Mexico’s Pedro Flores Salazar in 59 seconds. In the final round he took a 10-0 lead against Canada’s Logan Sloan before pinning him in 40 seconds.

Fix will return to the mat on June 3rd at the Final X competition in Stillwater where he will aim to retain his spot on the US World Team.

Volleyball

CPHS senior Kasidy Holland signed to play collegiate volleyball at Friends University, an NAIA school in Wichita, Kansas, competing in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The team captain and outside hitter was a Frontier Valley All-Conference honorable mention this season and helped lead the team to their second and third winningest seasons in school history over the course of her career.

Holland will join teammates Teyha Johnson and Charley Fahland, who previously signed with Friends in February.

Softball

Three Charles Page High School alumnae won titles in their respective softball divisions on Saturday, May 14th.

Sydney Pennington scored the go-ahead run in an upset of No. 1 Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at USA Hall of Fame Stadium. The redshirt senior scored on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning to propel Oklahoma State University to its first Big 12 Tournament Championship.

Rogers State sophomore Kimi Presnell helped lift her team to an NCAA Division II Regional Championship Saturday in Claremore.

The Hillcats had to battle back from the losers bracket after a Friday loss to Minnesota State, but won their first rematch 8-2 in a 15-inning showdown.

Presnell hit an RBI double in the final inning and Rogers went on to win 4-0 in the “if” game.

Missouri State University redshirt sophomore Jacie Taber didn’t come out of the bullpen on Saturday, but her team won a 10-4 battle with Northern Iowa in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship.

Walden and Baughman take gold, Mackey snags silver at Moore track meet

The Charles Page High School Track and Field teams traveled to the 2017 Ken Hogan Invitational in Moore Thursday and had yet another solid performance with four gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. The boys placed seventh overall and the girls came in eighth.

The boys' relay teams continued to impress, taking seventh place in the 400 meter and third place in the 3200 runs. The 400 relay has historically been a weak point for the Sandites, but this team finished in 44.85 for the best time in the thirteen years that Sandite Pride has records for. The 3200 team finished in 8:27.66 for their best performance since the 2013 Regional Champion squad.

The girls participated in three relays, taking eleventh in the 800, eighth in the 1600, and third in the 3200 with times of 1:58.84, 4:46.25, and 10:24.84, respectively.

Oklahoma State University-signed senior Cheyenne Walden took first place in all three of her solo runs. She won her second gold medal in the 800 with a time of 2:22.65, seven seconds ahead of the runner-up. She won her ninth gold medal in the 1600 with a time of 5:18.95 and was nine seconds ahead of the runner-up. She won her twentieth-straight and twenty-fourth overall gold medal in the 3200 with a time of 11:04.26, more than a minute ahead of the runner-up.

Tiqvah Soap also placed top-ten in both the 800 (7th) and 1600 (8th) with times of 2:35.91 and 5:58.40, respectively.

Aden Baughman won his third-straight 800 run with a time of 2:02.24, just barely edging out the runner-up by half a second. He also set a personal-record in the 1600 with a runner-up finish at 4:41.57 and was less than two seconds behind the winner. Ian Baustert took fifth in the 1600 with a time of 4:54.47.

Joel Mackey improved for the third-straight week in the 200 for a runner-up finish in 22.47, less than half a second behind the winner. Ben Nortey also PRed in the 200 for eleventh place with a time of 24.37.

Jacob Smith (6th) and Danny Murray (10th) both placed top-ten for the first time in their careers in the 3200. Smith finished in 10:50.99 and Murray set a PR at 11:14.76. Jaelyn Jackson placed ninth in the 400 with a time of 52.44 and Jacob Garbey placed tenth in the 800 with a time of 2:11.37.

Adrianna Tapp placed eighth in the 100 dash with a time of 13.53 and set a PR of 28.18 in the 200 for twelfth place. Madelyn Adams, Wanageeska Williams, and Leah Kaufman also set PRs in the 200.

Kristopher Edwards placed sixth in shot put with a distance of 46'11.00".

Sandite of the Week: Cheyenne Walden places 34th at Nationals; CPHS Cross Country runners excel in post-season

Left to right: Superintendent Sherry Durkee, Cross Country Head Coach Chris Corbin, Sandite of the Week Cheyenne Walden, Mayor and CC Assistant Coach Mike Burdge.

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Two members of the Charles Page High School varsity cross country team competed on the Oklahoma All-Star Team against Arkansas this past month. Senior Southwestern Oklahoma State-signee and four-time State Qualifier Alexis Davis placed 28th in the event with a 5K time of 20:54.85. Sophomore two-time State Qualifier Aden Baughman placed 36th with a time of 17:25.38.

The Arkansas Women's team won by nine points, though their average time was only two seconds ahead of the Okies. The Arkansas Men's team won by two points, but the average Oklahoman was a second faster. The meet was held at Rogers High School in Rogers, Arkansas.

Cheyenne Walden also qualified for the event, but instead traveled to The Woodlands, Texas for the Nike South Regionals. The four-time State Champion placed fifth at Bear Branch Park against runners from five different states. She finished the 5K with a time of 17:58.22. She was 26 seconds behind her personal-record, ten seconds behind the number-four runner, and 25 seconds behind the first place runner.

From there Walden advanced to Nationals in Portland Oregon where she competed this past weekend. In 2014 she placed 22nd at the South Regional, then took sixth last year and went on to place 59th in the Nation.

This time around she improved even further, placing 34th out of 200 of the country's best competitors. Walden finished the 5K run in 18:28.2 with an average mile of 5:56.3. She was neck-and-neck with several competitors, finishing 0.3 seconds behind the 33rd place runner and a flat second ahead of the runner after her. Overall she was 1:18.3 behind Berkeley-signed senior Brie Oakley who swept the National Championship by a 28 second margin over Portland sophomore Ember Stratton.

According to Head Coach Chris Corbin, Walden's performance is the best placing ever for an Oklahoma girl at the event. Walden was presented with a Sandite Spirit Award by the Sand Springs Board of Education at their regular monthly meeting Monday night. "She's a better human being than she is a runner," said Corbin during the presentation. Walden volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday with the Elementary running program.

Walden signed with the No. 15 ranked Oklahoma State University earlier this school year and will be studying physical education. This is her fourth time being named Sandite of the Week.

Daton Fix becomes fourth Division One commit in CPHS Class of 2017, more are possible

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Charles Page High School is on a roll lately with talented athletes in all areas, and has signed seven to play at the collegiate level this week. Four of those are going to NCAA Division One schools, and we haven't even got to winter and spring sports yet.

Senior three-time State Champion Daton Fix signed with No. 1 Oklahoma State University as the number one most sought-after recruit in the nation. He's a ten-time Freestyle National Champion, three-time Folkstyle National Champion, three-time Greco-Roman National Champion, Freestyle and Greco Pan-American Champion, and two-time World Championship Freestyle Bronze Medalist.

Senior pitcher Jake Terry signed with the No. 21 University of Oklahoma to play baseball after committing to the program in 2015. He finished last season with a 5-4 record and 3.88 ERA and is currently recovering from shoulder surgery with his Senior year still ahead of him.

Senior pitcher/short-stop Sydney Pennington signed with the No. 31 Oklahoma State University softball team after committing to the program in 2014. She finished last season with a 6-0 record, 1.41 ERA, and .543 batting average and is also the leading scorer on the Lady Sandite Basketball team.

Senior four-time State Qualifier Alexis Davis signed with the NCAA Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She took 21st in the State this fall and will continue to show off this spring in Track.

3X Sandite of the Week: Cheyenne Walden wins fourth Regional Title

By: Virgil Noah, Staff Writer

Cheyenne Walden refuses to relinquish her throne as the queen of Cross Country in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma State-commit set a new personal record, finishing with a time of 17:32 in her 5K, en route to her fourth Regional Title. The time was a three-second improvement over her Regional time from last year. Walden won by an incredible margin of 53 seconds over the second-place finisher from Bartlesville, Shay Stayton. She was 1:08 ahead of the number three runner. The victory gave Walden her sixth first-place finish this year and 26th for her career.

Along with Alexis Davis, Walden is one of only two runners in the history of Sand Springs Cross Country to qualify for State all four years.

Walden is a three-time Cross Country State Champion and three-time Track State Champion, and will look to build on that when she runs in the State Championship on October 29th. This is Cheyenne's third time being named Sandite of The Week.

19:18 Nelson Yazzie 80th Place
19:19 Jaden Weiser 81st Place

It was a great weekend for the Charles Page High School varsity cross country teams. The girls took seventh place at the Regional 5K at Mohawk Park, just making the cut for State. This is their third time qualifying in four years, having just missed it last year. The boys failed to qualify as a team, but set several personal records.

The regional takes the top seven teams and the top seven individuals who weren't on qualifying teams. In 2015 the girls took eighth place, but sent three runners individually. According to Head Coach Chris Corbin, seniors Cheyenne Walden and Alexis Davis are now the first runners in the history of the program to qualify all four years. Sophomore Aden Baughman led the boys and qualified for the second straight year after placing fourth among runners who weren't on qualifying teams.

The girls finished seventh of fifteen teams with an average time of 20:45, their best "true" 5K of the season. Last week they finished in 20:27 at the Conference meet, but that track was a few hundred meters short. Oklahoma State-commit Cheyenne Walden secured her fourth Regional Title by an incredible margin of 53 seconds over the number two runner, Shay Stayton of Bartlesville. She also set a personal record of 17:32, a three-second improvement over last year's Regional time. This is her sixth first-place finish this year and 26th first-place finish of her career. The full qualifying squad is Alexis Davis, junior Tiqvah Soap, sophomore Sara Abbet, sophomore Elizabeth Watts, freshman Chezney Kelley, and freshman Kaitlyn Walden. Abbet, Kelley, and Kaitlyn Walden all set personal records. There were 106 runners in the girls race.

The boys took tenth of sixteen teams with an average time of 18:13, their fourth best this season. Senior Jacob Garbey, who usually finishes top-three among the Sandite boys, was unavoidably out of town for the race, and freshman Jaden Weiser was nursing a mild injury throughout the race and finished 28 seconds behind his previous performance. Garbey's presence might have made the difference between tenth and ninth place, but wasn't likely to help qualify the boys as a whole. Overall, the boys still performed well and finished with strong times all-around. Baughman set a personal record 17:00 finish, marking a six-second improvement over last year's Regional. Freshman Kaegan Murray set a personal record 17:28, improving 28 seconds over his previous best. He finished second among non-qualifying runners and was just nine seconds away from making the cut. Senior Ian Baustert finished his high school career with a PR 18:36, improving six seconds over his previous best. Junior Phillip Elleman also set a PR.

The State Championship will be held Saturday, October 29th at Edmond Santa Fe High School. The school is located at 1901 W. 15th Street, Edmond, Oklahoma. 6A Girls will begin at 12:00 p.m. followed by 6A Boys at 12:45 p.m. The awards assembly will be held at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $7.00 for adults and students.
