Sand Springs Wrestling places second at Bedlam Battle with 11 champions

Sand Springs Elementary and Middle School wrestling took second-place in their second-straight tournament this weekend, sending 37 athletes to the Stillwater Bedlam Battle. Fifteen made the finals and eleven brought home the gold. The home team took first place in the tournament, entering fifty competitors, and finishing with twenty finalists and twelve champions.

Tabor Reiss (4-0, 15-2) competed in Division One Open at 37 pounds and took first place. He teched Gabriel Sharp (Broken Arrow) 16-0 and John Farmer (Cleveland) 15-0, then pinned Bryson Cupps (Catoosa) in 2:00 and Ryatt Rodden (Harrah) in 0:34.

Jackson Martin (4-0, 19-6) competed in Division Three Open at 52 pounds and took first place. He pinned Caleb Kendall (Sapulpa) in 0:32 and Spencer McClellend Pryor) in 1:14, then teched Ryker Ernce (Stillwater) 16-0 and Brenner Ball (Ponca City) 18-2.

Balance Johnson (4-0, 7-0) competed in Division Three Open at 110 pounds and took first place. He pinned Aidan Hays (Broken Arrow) in 1:10, Wesley Silvis (Guthrie) in 0:37 and Treg Bowman (Stillwater) in 3:53, and teched Ryan Peterson (Sapulpa) 18-3.

Clayton Giddens (4-0, 37-2) competed in Division Four Open at 67 pounds and took first place. He pinned Kaleb Collins (Broken Arrow) in 2:56, Jacob Caviness (Stilwell) in 3:33, and Cian Kimerling (Moore) in 1:09, then teched Tyler Misenheimer (Blanchard) 19-3.

Owen Martin (4-0, 24-3) competed in Division Four Open at 70 pounds and took first place. He pinned J.J. Lopez (Prodigy) in 0:46, Braxton Sloan (Stillwater) in 2:25, Blake Hawthorne (Prodigy) in 1:59, and Jim Watkins (Bristow) in 0:24.

Asher Giddens (3-0, 12-8) competed in Division One Open at 43 pounds and took first place. He pinned Parker Ingram (Cleveland) in 1:22, topped Daxen Delacerda (Bristow) 11-8, then teched Nathan McFarland (Southmoore) 19-2.

Will Meredith (3-0, 22-5) competed in Division Two Open at 46 pounds and took first place. He teched Parker Lapham (Owasso) 17-2, majored Jackson Smith (Moore) 13-0, and topped Brennan Gray (Prodigy) 6-4.

Jaxon Grigsby (3-0, 25-5) competed in Division Two Open at 49 pounds and took first place. He pinned Brycen Celis (Westmoore) in 0:28, topped Levi Smith (Stillwater) 11-10, then pinned Malaki Venetoff (Berryhill) in 3:32.

Promised Johnson (3-0, 5-2) competed in Division Two Open at 64 pounds and took first place. He majored Max Harland (Berryhill) 12-3, topped Tohmi Carney (Broken Arrow) 12-5, and won a 4-2 sudden-victory overtime decision over Caden Johnson (Stillwater).

Jayden Pait (2-0, 10-6) competed in Division Four Novice at 76 pounds and took first place. He topped Madison Roe (Blanchard) 2-0 and James Edwards (Del City) 16-8.

Chase Kelley (2-0, 7-12) competed in Division Four Novice at 130 pounds and took first place. He drew only one opponent and pinned Colton Ingram in 0:34, then teched him 15-0 in a best-of-three series.

Hunter Spencer (3-1, 22-9) competed in Division Two Open at 61 pounds and took second place. He pinned Cruz Raines (Lexington) in 1:54, topped Seth Kysar (Cleveland) 6-4, the pinned Zeke Hughes (Lexington) in 1:58 before falling 7-0 to Jaedan Adams (Stillwater) in the finals.

Grady Mittasch (2-1, 37-9) competed in Division Three Open at 67 pounds and took second place. He lost his opening match 6-4 to Bryson Humphries (Catoosa), but pinned Aiden Cox (Southmoore) in 0:23 and majored teammate David Ritchey 13-0.

Robert Burke (2-1, 19-6) competed in Division Three Open at 64 pounds and took second place. He pinned Caleb Macias (Southmoore) in 1:14 and Bryson Rocco Caruso (Moore) in 0:53, but fell 4-2 in sudden-victory overtime to Devon Miller (Stillwater).

Zane Swafford (2-1, 2-5) competed in Division Three Open at 70 pounds and took second place. He pinned Jase Winchester (OWA) in 2:46 and Bo Ware (Cleveland) in 4:20, but fell 7-0 to Wesley Madden (OWA).

Jaxon Trotter (2-1, 24-22) competed in Division Three Open at 80 pounds and took second place. He pinned Pierce Frederick (Owasso) in 3:19 and topped Tyler McCall (Catoosa) 5-3, but fell in 2:04 to Ishmael Guerrero (Stillwater).

David Cline (2-1, 8-9) competed in Division Two Novice at 70 pounds and took second place. He majored Brendan Stalnaker (Broken Arrow) 13-4, then topped Porter Jones (Guthrie) 2-0 before getting pinned in 0:11 by Brody Byers (Harrah).

Ayreson Reiss (1-1, 3-9) competed in Division Three Open at 55 pounds and took second place. He defeated Jaden Bixler (Cleveland) 10-3, but was pinned in 1:14 by Cayden Cupps (Catoosa).

Ryder Flores (3-1, 21-8) competed in Division One Open at 40 pounds and took third place. He pinned Knox Lopez (Pryor) in 1:00, but was defeated 7-2 by Colten Sims (Bristow). In the consolations he pinned Lynette Mullin (Stilwell) in 1:21 and Lopez in 2:49.

Tanner Copeland (3-1, 10-1) competed in Division Two Novice at 61 pounds and took third place. He was pinned in 3:00 in the opening round by Lane Simpson (Cushing), but received a forfeit from Logan McMullen (Westmoore) and pinned Kolby Robertson (Southmoore) in 0:49 and Daxon Renollet (Stillwater) in 0:29.

Skyler Wood (3-1, 16-2) competed in Division Two Novice at 64 pounds and took third place. He pinned Louden McDoulett (Little Axe) in 0:38, then was majored 12-2 by Ryder Trepton (Ponca City). In the consolations he defeated Brody Stevenson (Glenpool) 5-0 and pinned McDoulett again in 1:21.

Mitchell Smith (2-1, 9-9) competed in Division Four Open at 73 pounds and took third place. He lost his opening match 2-0 to Kaden Wallace (Moore), but pinned Cade Hill (OWA) in 0:36 and majored Vince Veloquio (Pryor) 18-7.

Joshua Spurgeon (2-1, 20-7) competed in Division Three Novice at 61 pounds and took third place. He was majored 15-5 by Aydin Machado (Cushing) in the opening round, but defeated Tatum Dolan (Berryhill) 7-3 and Wiley Welch (Glenpool) 8-0.

Ivan Barham (2-2, 2-14) competed in Division Three Novice at 90 pounds and took third place. He was pinned in 1:16 by Tanner Hulbert (Cleveland) and in 0:58 by Canon Bronson (OWA), but received a forfeit from Stephen Burgess (Southmoore) and pinned Brandon Pulido Barajas (Ponca City) in 1:00.

Seven Sand Springs seniors sign letters of intent to play college sports

Seven Sand Springs High School students signed letters-of-intent Wednesday morning in the Ed Dubie Field House, bringing the grand total of college-bound athletes from the Class of 2017 to fourteen.

Sand Springs has two softball players, two cross-country runners, two baseball players, one basketball player, three football players, one volleyball player, and two soccer players all headed to the next level.

No. 1 Sand Springs improves to 16-0 with 70-12 victory over Bixby

The No. 1 ranked undefeated Charles Page High School wrestling team (17-0) traveled to Bixby (1-7) Tuesday night for their final dual of the regular season and won twelve of fourteen matches for a dominating 70-12 victory. The Sandites picked up forfeits at 106 and 220 and nine victories by pin.

Bixby started with a six-point deficit after forfeiting the 106 pound weight class to Brendon Wisely and it was the closest they would get all night. Tanner Ward (27-9 season, 103-21) pinned Alex Hernandez in 0:42, then Michael Ritchey (30-8, 59-32) worked up a 12-0 lead on Ainslie Lane before pinning her in 5:11.

Blake Sargent (30-8, 82-22) took on the Spartans' top dog, Easton Hudson, at 126 and nearly pinned the State Qualifier before he was saved by the buzzer. Sargent took a 5-0 lead into the second and quickly got an escape. He added another takedown early in the third period and added back points for an 11-0 major decision and a 22-0 team lead.

Daton Fix (37-0, 155-0) brought his infamous offensive assault against Gavin Southern and took a 16-4 lead before pinning the Spartan in 1:46. Jack Karstetter (23-1, 96-16) pinned Derek VanDyke in 0:49. Beau Bratcher (36-6, 127-29) pinned Braden Roller in 0:40. Payton Scott (31-2, 52-10) worked over Ryan Stetler in 0:46. Noah Almy (18-16) had little difficulty with Owen DeWoody and scored a 7-1 lead before pinning the Spartan in 0:59. Zane Basma (20-2, 82-27) got his pin in 0:58 against Christian Shubert.

Hayden Cramer (8-8) worked up a 5-0 lead against Max Guyer before getting suprised and pinned in 4:54. With the dual officially a Sandite victory at 58-6, the Spartans finally averted the shutout.

Gage Fain (25-11, 38-33) got in trouble early against Matt Smith and was taken down for nearfall points before reversing and getting the pin in 1:35. Bixby waited to see who would check in at 220 and forfeited to Delvin Jordan (35-2, 66-14), sending No. 7 Cody Adams up against Kris Edwards (4-1). Edwards put up a tough fight, but the first-year varsity wrestler wasn't quite ready for the two-time State Qualifier and was pinned in 0:31.

The season is nearing its end for the Sandites, and they won't return to action till Dual State at Firelake Arena in Shawnee Friday, February 11th. The undefeated District Champions will also host the Regional Tournament February 17th and 18th.

Cheyenne Walden is named first-ever 4X Gatorade Runner of the Year

CHICAGO (January 23, 2017) — In its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, today announced Cheyenne Walden of Charles Page High School as its 2016-17 Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. Walden is the first Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Charles Page High School, and it is her fourth time being selected.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse, distinguishes Walden as Oklahoma’s best high school girls cross country runner. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced in January/February, Walden joins an elite alumni association of past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Lukas Verzbicas (2010-11, 2009-10 Carl Sandburg, Orland Park, Ill.), Megan Goethals (2009-10, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Mich.), Jordan Hasay (2008-09, Mission College Prep., San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and Chris Derrick (2007-08, Neuqua Valley, Naperville, Ill.).

The three-time returning Gatorade Runner of the Year, the 5-foot-4 senior won her fourth-straight Class 6A state meet title this past season with a course-record time of 17:55.6, breaking the tape 40.8 seconds ahead of her next-closest competitor and leading the Sandites to an eighth-place finish as a team. Walden finished 34th at the Nike Cross Nationals Final and became the first Oklahoman to twice qualify for NXN Final. She also took 11th at the Foot Locker South Regional championships.

In addition to her four Cross Country titles, she is also a three-time State Champion on the track. She won gold in 2015 for the 3200 meter run, and won both the 1600 and 3200 in 2016.

Diagnosed with central auditory processing disorder and dyslexia, Walden speaks to youth groups about her learning challenges and working to overcome them. She has also volunteered locally at the Sand Springs Children’s Home and as a youth running coach. “Cheyenne had a great year,” said David Ayres, Bartlesville High head coach. “She is an amazing competitor and pushes herself every race. She trains hard, eats right and knows what it takes to succeed. She is one of the best Oklahoma runners ever and it’s an honor to watch her run and to be on the same field as her.”

Walden has maintained a weighted 3.76 GPA in the classroom. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to run cross country on scholarship at Oklahoma State University this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection Committee, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Four-time winner Walden joins Gatorade Oklahoma Girls Cross Country Runners of the Year Alex Davis (2012-13 & 2011-12, Plainview High School), Noemi Hernandez (2010-11, Westmoore High School), Jori Davis (2009-10, Piedmont High School), Andrea Lewis (2008- 09, Bishop Kelley High School), and Sara Vaughn (2007-08, Union High School) as athletes who have won the cross country award since its inception in 2007.

As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Walden will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. Every Gatorade Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate and will have the opportunity to enter for an additional $10,000 spotlight grant by writing a brief essay explaining why their selected organization deserves additional support. 12 spotlight grants – one for each sport – will be announced throughout the year.

Daton Fix becomes fourth Division One commit in CPHS Class of 2017, more are possible

Charles Page High School is on a roll lately with talented athletes in all areas, and has signed seven to play at the collegiate level this week. Four of those are going to NCAA Division One schools, and we haven't even got to winter and spring sports yet.

Senior three-time State Champion Daton Fix signed with No. 1 Oklahoma State University as the number one most sought-after recruit in the nation. He's a ten-time Freestyle National Champion, three-time Folkstyle National Champion, three-time Greco-Roman National Champion, Freestyle and Greco Pan-American Champion, and two-time World Championship Freestyle Bronze Medalist.

Senior pitcher Jake Terry signed with the No. 21 University of Oklahoma to play baseball after committing to the program in 2015. He finished last season with a 5-4 record and 3.88 ERA and is currently recovering from shoulder surgery with his Senior year still ahead of him.

Senior pitcher/short-stop Sydney Pennington signed with the No. 31 Oklahoma State University softball team after committing to the program in 2014. She finished last season with a 6-0 record, 1.41 ERA, and .543 batting average and is also the leading scorer on the Lady Sandite Basketball team.

Senior seven-time State Champion Cheyenne Walden signed with the No. 15 Oklahoma State University cowgirls after committing to the program in October. She finished her Cross Country career with four State Titles and looks to the Spring track season where she already holds three State Titles in two distances.

Senior four-time State Qualifier Alexis Davis signed with the NCAA Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She finished her career as the first ever Lady Sandite (along with Walden) to ever qualify for State all four years. She took 21st in the State this fall and will continue to show off this spring in Track.

Senior All-State outfielder Jessica Collins signed with NJCAA Division I Connors State. She finished last season with a .316 batting average and was named to the All-District, All-Region, and All-State teams. She will join the Lady Sandite basketball team this winter before finishing her high school career with Spring slow pitch.

6'6" Senior center Kyle Keener signed with the NCAA Division II University of Central Oklahoma basketball team after committing to the program in September. He finished his junior year as the number three scorer on his team with 11 points and 6 rebounds per game.

The only other Sand Springs student currently committed to a college is Class of 2018 volleyball player Gloria Mutiri, who verbally committed to Ohio State University in September, but there are several other Seniors expected to go to the next level.

CPHS wrestling coach Kelly Smith says he has two or three other seniors who are more than capable of wrestling at the Division One level if they can get the exposure necessary.
