CPHS Softball: Sandites run-rule Sapulpa twice, Clemons hits grand slam

Sand Springs swept a Highway 97 Rivalry double-header against Sapulpa Thursday afternoon, winning both games by run-rule.

Class 6A No. 14 ranked Charles Page High School (6-8) needed only three innings for a 17-5 win against No. 17 Sapulpa (6-8) in the first game and followed it up with a 15-5 victory in four innings in game two.

The visiting Sapulpans struck first with a solo home run from Kaylyn Hearon in the top of the second. That lead wouldn’t last long however as the Sandites buried them under sixteen runs in the bottom of the inning.

Madelyn Blair singled and walked in a run after three-straight walks. Rachel Jones batted in Makenna Skaggs and Felicity Horn. Kimi Presnell doubled to bring in Cameron Clemons and Jones. Then came the lumberjacks.

Sabrina Usher hit the first of many home runs. Jacie Taber scored on an error. Skaggs scored Blair and Elizabeth Luttrell with a homer, Clemons scored Horn with a homer, Usher scored Jones with a homer, and Jensen Arnold scored Jacie Taber on a double for a 16-1 lead.

Justise Wade scored Kali Husman and Alexis Cahwee scored Jessica Hobbs in the top of the third. Sapulpa loaded the bases with an error and Blakely Alden doubled to bring in Wade and Cahwee to make it 16-5 before the inning came to a close.

Horn secured the twelve-run victory for the Sandites in the bottom of the third with a double to score Blair. Jensen Arnold got the win on the mound.

The Chieftains had lots of opportunity in game two, but stranded loaded bases in the top of the first inning. Instead, it Jensen Arnold with the single to score Usher for the opening run. Usher scored on a hit from Jensen Arnold, Arnold scored on a hit from Blair, and Luttrell scored on a hit from Horn.

Clemons stole the show with her second home run of the afternoon, a grand slam scoring Blair, Skaggs, and Horn for a 7-0 lead.

The visitors made their way onto the scoreboard in the top of the second, loading the bases with two singles and a walk. Hearon singled in Trinity Mosquito, Husman, and Sierra Squires.

Usher hit her third home run of the day to score Madison Lee in the bottom of the second, then Mackenzie Hughes homered to score Wade in the top of the third.

Luttrell hit a lead off homer in the bottom of the third. Kinsey Skaggs singled in Horn, then Madison Lee scored Clemons and Skaggs to make it 13-5.

Usher, Taber, and Arnold hit singles to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth, then Luttrell hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Usher. Blair secured the victory with a single to score Taber. Luttrell got the win on the mound in game two.

Sand Springs softball will return to action Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. with a road game against No. 2 Union (15-3). Sapulpa will host No. 10 Jenks (13-6) Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.

The No. 1 ranked undefeated Charles Page High School wrestling team (17-0) traveled to Bixby (1-7) Tuesday night for their final dual of the regular season and won twelve of fourteen matches for a dominating 70-12 victory. The Sandites picked up forfeits at 106 and 220 and nine victories by pin.

Bixby started with a six-point deficit after forfeiting the 106 pound weight class to Brendon Wisely and it was the closest they would get all night. Tanner Ward (27-9 season, 103-21) pinned Alex Hernandez in 0:42, then Michael Ritchey (30-8, 59-32) worked up a 12-0 lead on Ainslie Lane before pinning her in 5:11.

Blake Sargent (30-8, 82-22) took on the Spartans' top dog, Easton Hudson, at 126 and nearly pinned the State Qualifier before he was saved by the buzzer. Sargent took a 5-0 lead into the second and quickly got an escape. He added another takedown early in the third period and added back points for an 11-0 major decision and a 22-0 team lead.

Daton Fix (37-0, 155-0) brought his infamous offensive assault against Gavin Southern and took a 16-4 lead before pinning the Spartan in 1:46. Jack Karstetter (23-1, 96-16) pinned Derek VanDyke in 0:49. Beau Bratcher (36-6, 127-29) pinned Braden Roller in 0:40. Payton Scott (31-2, 52-10) worked over Ryan Stetler in 0:46. Noah Almy (18-16) had little difficulty with Owen DeWoody and scored a 7-1 lead before pinning the Spartan in 0:59. Zane Basma (20-2, 82-27)  got his pin in 0:58 against Christian Shubert.

Hayden Cramer (8-8) worked up a 5-0 lead against Max Guyer before getting suprised and pinned in 4:54. With the dual officially a Sandite victory at 58-6, the Spartans finally averted the shutout.

Gage Fain (25-11, 38-33) got in trouble early against Matt Smith and was taken down for nearfall points before reversing and getting the pin in 1:35. Bixby waited to see who would check in at 220 and forfeited to Delvin Jordan (35-2, 66-14), sending No. 7 Cody Adams up against Kris Edwards (4-1). Edwards put up a tough fight, but the first-year varsity wrestler wasn't quite ready for the two-time State Qualifier and was pinned in 0:31.

The season is nearing its end for the Sandites, and they won't return to action till Dual State at Firelake Arena in Shawnee Friday, February 11th. The undefeated District Champions will also host the Regional Tournament February 17th and 18th.

Oklahoma Freestyle breezes through South Dakota at Nationals

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Oklahoma Outlaws put the whole arena on high notice that they were on a warpath in the opening round of Freestyle Friday morning. The back-to-back Junior Dual National Champions have every intention of threepeating this weekend at the Cox Business Center in Tulsa.

South Dakota's Nick Casperson won the first round with a back-and-forth 20-10 tech fall over Dan Baker, but Zach Marcheselli got Oklahoma in the win column with a 12-2 tech against Payson Dirk.

The Outlaws got the lead with a forfeit at 220 and never looked back. Trenton Leiurance had little difficulty running up an 11-0 tech fall over Truman Ashes in 5:34.

Kellyn March won a 10-0 tech over Alex Fields for South Dakota, but Oklahoma went on a run from there. Wyatt Adams received a forfeit at 106, Colt Newton teched Trevor Klinnert 10-0, and Jet Taylor did the same to Caden Lamer.

Brandon Carroll put up a solid attempt on Daton Fix, but the National Champ prevailed 11-0 in 2:33. Jacob Butler continued the undefeated streak he began in Greco with an 8-4 decision over Jebben Keyes, Jaxen Gilmore teched Bailey Mennis 14-4, and Beau Guffey teched Josh Cid 10-0.

Wyatt Sheets received a forfeit at 152, Dayton Garrett teched Blake Beitz 10-0, and Drew Hinkle wrapped the dual up with a 10-0 tech fall over Jesse Mikrut for a final score of 55-11. Up next for the Outlaws will be an untested Iowa Blue team who received a bye in the first round.

Payton Scott, Team Oklahoma place sixth at Junior Greco Roman Nationals

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The Oklahoma Outlaws put up a tough fight, but lost back-to-back duals for a sixth place finish Thursday evening at the Cox Business Center in Tulsa. The USA Wrestling Junior Greco-Roman Dual Nationals featured thirty-four teams from twenty-six states and drew nearly 600 of the best wrestlers in the nation. Last year the Oklahoma Greco team included two Sandites in Kyler Childers and Cody Karstetter, and placed fifth overall. This year Payton Scott was the lone Charles Page student to compete in Greco.

Team Oklahoma got off to a fast start against Team Georgia Blue Wednesday morning and won every weight for a 68-2 finish. Read that story here.

Next to go down was a scrappy team from Pennsylvania who put up a tough battle but ultimately fell 38-30. Read that story here.

In the Pool D finals, Oklahoma pulled off a surprisingly easy 41-29 upset over the top-seeded team from Iowa. Read that story here.

Day two was far tougher for the Outlaws as they faced off against the toughest teams in the nation in the Gold/Silver Pool. Their dominating win streak came to an end at the hands of California in a fiercely contested battle that wasn't decided till the final match. Read that story here.

Scott had the honor of clinching the win in the next dual, however, as the Okies edged out Florida 36-30. Read that story here.

The final two duals would not be as kind to Oklahoma, however, as they lost to Minnesota Blue and Michigan Blue back-to-back.

Trenton Lieurance, Wyatt Adams, Jet Taylor, Jacob Butler, and Jaxen Gilmore all won their matches against Minnesota, but the home team lost 43-22 to the eventual National Champions. Oklahoma can take some solace in the fact that they didn't lose by any more than the eventual Runners-Up from Illinois. Both teams lost by 21 points.

Lieurance won a 9-2 decision over Trenton Rogich, Adams teched Minnesota State Champ Ashton Clark 10-0, and Taylor teched Curtis LeMair 10-0. Butler pulled off a huge 12-10 upset decision over Brent Jones, who placed third at last year's Fargo Nationals. Probably the biggest win went to Jaxen Gilmore who pinned Cadet National Runner-Up Calvin Germinaro in 1:45.

Scott lost his match by 10-0 tech fall to Southern Plains Regional Champion Travis Ostby. Alec McDoulett put up a great performance against nationally ranked No. 9 Patrick McKee that ended in a close 16-15 decision. Bear Hughes also went the distance for a 14-10 decision to Nationally ranked No. 11 Taylor Venz.

In the placement match against Michigan Blue, the Okies were noticeably drained after a long day of brutal competition. Dalton Duffield defeated Michigan State Champion Jordan Hamdan with a 16-5 tech fall. Butler finished out the tournament undefeated after holding off Central Regional Champion Nick Freeman for a 3-0 decision. Butler was the only Oklahoma wrestler to go undefeated. Brik Filippo won a 12-0 tech fall over Trent Lashuay and Jaryn Curry pinned Dustin Gross in 1:54. Dan Baker went the distance against Nationally ranked No. 11 Jelani Embree for a 15-8 loss.

After placing sixth in the country, the Oklahoma team earned All-American status for the third straight year.

Friday morning will begin the Freestyle Dual tournament in which Team Oklahoma is the back-to-back defending National Champions. Thirty-nine teams will be competing, including two from Oklahoma. Riley Weir and Daton Fix will be representing Sand Springs on the Oklahoma Blue team.

OK Blue is the fifth-highest seeded team in the tournament, behind California, Illinois, Iowa Red, and New Jersey, but boasts an impressive roster of nationally ranked wrestlers. Paxton Rosen is ranked 12th in the nation, Fix is ranked second, Kaden Gfeller is ranked fourth, and Wyatt Sheets is ranked 11th. Up first for team Blue is South Dakota at 9:00 am, followed by Texas Blue immediately after.

Photos of Team Oklahoma can be found at this link.
