Blake Sargent takes first at Bobby Lyons Invitational

Despite sitting out several key starters, the Charles Page High School wrestling squad was still more than capable of finishing third at their home tournament behind the #1 teams in 6A and 5A. After upsetting the #1 Broken Arrow Tigers Thursday night, the most important thing for the Sandites to do now is remain healthy for Regionals, State, and Dual State. #8 Riley Weir, John Jiminez, #2 Trace Fleischman, #7 Lane Lettich, and Delvin Jordan all sat out the tournament to rest and recover, and several backups got to see their first varsity action of the season.

With Weir nursing a hurt arm, the Sandites didn't wrestle anybody at 106.

At 113 Sand Springs wrestled #5 Michael Ritchey (11-11) against #9 Laif Jones of Bartlesville, and the hometown boy put forward a 3-1 decision for the win. Unfortunately in the next round he was pitted against the #3-ranked State Runner-Up Mason Naifeh of Union. Earlier this week Naifeh defeated Ritchey by a narrow 4-1 decision in the dual, but this time the Perry Champion would pull even further ahead for an 11-3 major, sending Ritchey to the consolation bracket. From there Ritchey rebounded with an 11-3 major of his own over #8 John Warford of Sapulpa, but fell 2-1 to Barnsdall's Logan Bryant and had to settle for fourth place.

Also at 113, but wrestling unattached, was junior Kenny Daniel (0-2) who made his first varsity appearance since the Bixby dual last January. Daniel was pinned in 1:37 by Bryant and 2:45 by Warford. 

120 #6 Blake Sargent (21-7) made a great opening statement with a 3:37 pin of #9 Cameron Clark of Sapulpa, then followed it up with a 6-3 decision over Devon Ball (Sperry) and a 1-0 decision against Union's Cordney Chairs to wrap up the first day's action. In the Saturday finals Sargent got a rematch against #7 TaJuan Daniels of Broken Arrow, whom he had just beaten 4-2 in overtime Thursday night. Once more the Sandite would prevail, this time 3-2 for a first place finish.

Daton Fix wins Geary Invitational; Sandites place 5th

The Sand Springs Sandites are at near-full strength and demonstrated so at the oldest wrestling tournament in the country, the 72nd Geary Invitational Wrestling Tournament 

The Sandites, ranked #2 in Duals and #3 in tournaments, initially entered the season to much hubbub on the national scene after being ranked #25 in the nation by Flowrestling and #37 by InterMat.

Unfortunately, they weren't able to hold on to those ranking for long due to a less than spectacular performance at the Kansas City Stampede. Not because they don't deserve the rankings, but because they were missing half their starters. The state-title run made by the Sandite football team, which shares many athletes with the wrestling team, left several state qualifiers and other great wrestlers out of shape and battered from the extended time on the gridiron. 

Head wrestling coach Kelly Smith wants to see his team make a state title run of their own, and made the decision to sit out more than half a dozen wrestlers for the first half of the season, to ensure their health down the line--when it counts.

After the winter break, however, Payton Scott, Trace Fleischman, Lane Lettich, and Delvin Jordan are back in action.

#2 Sandites dominate defending Dual State Champions 51-10

The #9 Stillwater Pioneers (3-2) might not be the team they were last year, losing seven state qualifiers, including a state champion. But only a fool would discount one of the most consistent annual powerhouses in the state. 

There's not a single pushover on that team, and not a single Pioneer gave up a major decision or tech fall. 

106 #6 Riley Weir (12-5)  received a forfeit for a 6-0 team lead. 

113 #7 Michael Ritchey (7-6) defeated Matt Norton by 3-0 decision for a 9-0 team lead.

120 #8 Blake Sargent (13-4) received a forfeit for a 15-0 team lead.

126 #6 Jack Karstetter (11-5) was tied 1-1 with #1 State Runner-Up Andrew Neiman but fell 3-1 in a sudden victory takedown in overtime. Sandites lead 15-3.

132 #1 Daton Fix (15-0) pinned Andrew Biggs in 1:05 for a 21-3 team lead.

138 Beau Bratcher (12-3, ranked #3 in 145) defeated #5 state-qualifier Tyler Dieringer by 5-1 decision for a 24-3 team lead. 

145 Cody Mathis (4-3) was defeated 17-8 by #5 Kendon Lee. Sandites lead 24-7.

152 Payton Scott (2-0) defeated #5 Connor Wilcoxen 5-2 for a 27-7 team lead.

160 #3 Zane Basma (10-6) lost 6-0 to #1 state-placer Christian Bahl. Sandites lead 27-10.

170 Trace Fleischman (1-0, #2 in 182) defeated Jase Hoffman 7-1 for a 30-10 team lead.

182 Lane Lettich (2-0, #5 in 160) defeated #5 Jace Brownlee 6-3 for a 33-10 team lead.

Meet the Sandites: Blake Sargent & Jack Karstetter

There's 15 days left till the Charles Page varsity wrestling team kicks off the season with a big win over Owasso. This season Sand Springs took runner-up in the Fast Pitch softball State Championship, and is soon to beat the snot out of Bixby for a State Championship in football. Once the hubbub surrounding the gridiron quiets down, it'll be all eyes on the mat as Sand Springs returns one of the greatest squads in school history. 

For the next 15 days, we'll be counting down to the first dual and taking a look at our crowded roster of major talent. 

Blake Sargent

Sargent made a solid freshman debut with 3rd place finishes in both the Perry Tournament of Champions and the Jay Hancock Memorial Invitational and participated in several duals as well. Since the high school season ended, Sargent is 18-5, and he will likely continue that dominating record well into the school year.

Jack Karstetter is no joke. Then again, none of the Karstetter clan is anything to mess around with. Jack gets better every year, and in 2015 he's sitting at 63-9 with 11 pins and 28 tech falls. He went 34-7 last school season and earned a ticket to the State Championships, though he didn't place. Those losses at the the Championship spurred him into a 20-win streak and earned him a spot on Team Oklahoma at the Cadet National Duals where they took 2nd place in Greco-Roman. He also took 8th place in Greco Nationals this summer and is pretty much guaranteed to rank for every dual this season. No doubt he's headed back to state this season and will likely place if not win it all.
