Lady Sandite Softball splits district with Yukon

The Charles Page High School softball team was inches away from securing the district title last Thursday as they traveled to Yukon. The Lady Sandites were undefeated all season in district play and the Yukon Millerettes had only one loss, 7-6 to the Sandites earlier in the season.

Had the Sandites trumped the home team it would have cinched the title. The Millers refused to go quietly, however, and handed the Sandites their first district loss of the season in a 4-0 shutout. This left both teams with a 13-1 record.

Breley Webb got the win on the mound for Yukon, allowing only five base hits. Sydney Pennington got the loss for Sand Springs.

Webb hit an RBI Single in the bottom of the first to score Holman. Hannah Franklin hit an RBI in the fourth inning to score Cheyenne Factor. Franklin secured her spot as the star of the show with a 2RBI Double in the bottom of the sixth.

The Millers needed to win by two runs to secure the number one seed, and they outdid themselves with four as the Sandites lost by a hair.  

Sand Springs will still get to host a regional tournament October 8-9 and will play Claremore on the 8th at noon. Union and Ponca City will also be at the tournament. The Sandites haven’t played Claremore or Ponca this year, but they were defeated 5-2 by Union in the second game of the season.

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team handily defeated the Bixby Lady Spartans Tuesday night 7-2 in their last home district game of the season. Senior Northeastern State University-commit Jessica Schuler was the star of the show, batting .750 for five RBIs and one homerun. Oklahoma State University-commit Syndey Pennington was right behind her batting .750 with a homerun of her own and three total runs.

It was a bit of a slow start for the Lady Sandites, scoring only one run in the first inning on single by Schuler that brought home Jessica Collins. Their defense also ran into some problem early on, as Kat Taylor was walked and Hayley Womack reached base on an error. Both were left stranded, however.

In the third inning Lady Spartan Teri Pogue reached second base on a line drive into centerfield and Taylor was walked once again, but both were stranded after Blair scooped up a groundball and threw out Sierra Skaggs at first.

The Lady Sandites finally took a commanding 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Goose Salyers hit a double into the fence, Pennington hit a single down the third baseline, and Schuler scored all three of them—hitting a homerun over the fence.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning as Skaggs hit a single on loaded bases, scoring Taylor and Lillie Lavendusky. Stella Millican caught a fly ball from Sierra Kreiling that would have loaded the bases again, and Blair threw out Meredith Iden at first to bring the Spartan’s lone scoring inning to a close.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pennington found the third baseline again—this time for a double. Schuler brought her home on a centerfield single, then was replaced by designated runner Cameron Clemons who would score a few plays later on a single by third baseman Cody Cheatham for a 6-2 lead.

The final score of the game was a homerun over the fence from Pennington in the bottom of the sixth.

Pennington got the win on the mound for the Sandites with only 7 hits and 5 strikeouts, while Iden got the loss for Bixby with 15 hits and 1 strikeout. Schuler also led the game defensively with 10 putouts and 1 assist.

The Lady Sandites are 24-7 overall and 13-1 in district play. Recently, they went 1-1 at the Putnam City Tournament, losing 6-2 to Putnam City and defeating El Reno 10-1. A third game, against Duncan, was rained out.

• Sandite Volleyball's 7th and 8th grade teams both defeated Bartlesville and Union at Home.
• The 8th Grade Sandite football team continued a three game losing streak, falling 34-14 to Sapulpa Blue. Blake Goodman scored both TDs for the Sandites. The boys are now 1-3 for the season.
• The 9th Grade football team suffered their first loss of the year, 12-7 to Jenks White and are 2-1 overall. QB Hayden Cramer completed a 35-yard TD pass to Noah Almy and kicked the PAT for Sand Spring's only score. 
• JV football lost 35-14 to Bixby. Cade Pennington threw a 6-yard TD pass to Bryson Denton and Ben Norte registered a 70 yard rushing TD. The team falls to 1-2 for the season. 

9/22/15

• Highway 97 rivalry resulted in an intense battle for Sandite Volleyball at Home. Sapulpa won the 9th grade match, but the JV squad won 25-14 and 25-12 for a 2-0 shutout. The varsity girls lost their first set 18-25 but had back-to-back wins of 25-14 and 25-21 before the Lady Chieftains came back for a fourth set win of 22-25. The final set marked a Sandite V-I-C-T-O-R-Y in a close 18-16 as our girls claimed a 3-2 win!
• Lady Sandite softball extended their undefeated district record to 13-0 with a 7-2 win over Bixby at home.

9/24/15

• Lady Sandite varsity volleyball lost straight sets to 5A #1 Collinsville, 15-25, 15-25, 14-25. The girls are 11-20 for the season. 
• Varsity Softball lost their first district game of the season to Yukon, 4-0 on the road. Previously the Sandites beat the Millerettes 7-6 at home. 

9/25/15

• Varsity football suffered its first loss of the season 24-7 at Bartlesville. The lone score came on a Hunter Greathouse 2 yard keeper and a Cade Loomen PAT.

9/26/15

• Girls Cross Country came in 17th at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree, lead by Cheyenne Walden in 1st place overall.
• Boys Cross Country came in 37th at the OSU Cowboy Jamboree, lead by Aden Baughman in 133rd place overall. 
• Sandite Cheer came in 8th at the 6A state championships in Stillwater.

CPHS softball trumps Yukon in district battle

Sydney Pennington led the scoring for the Charles Page varsity fast pitch team with two runs and four RBIs, while Cheyenne Factor led the Yukon Millers’ softball team with three runs and three RBIs. Both hit the lone homeruns for their teams.

The Sand Springs Lady Sandites and the Yukon Lady Millers both entered Thursday’s district match-up at the Sandite Sporting Complex with undefeated district records and battled neck-and-neck to maintain that status.

Senior Goose Salyers got the start and win on the mound for the Sandites, while Breeley Webb suffered a loss for the Millers. Both players had a hard time pitching to such incredible talent at bat. Salyers allowed 34 hits over 7 innings and Webb allowed 29 hits over 6 innings—though Webb managed two strikeouts.

Yukon was first at bat and emerged to an early 2-0 lead over the home team. Mady Taylor was first on base with a single into center field, and was quickly brought home on an RBI homerun by Cheyenne Factor that easily cleared the fence. Makenna Arnold hit what should have been a single, but turned it into a double thanks to an error in left field by Rachel Blair. She was left stranded however as Stella Millican caught a fly ball into right field to bring the Lady Sandites in to bat.

Salyers hit a single that she turned into a double due to a Miller error. Jessica Collins hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Salyers to third, and Pennington smacked a big single into left field to bring her home, 2-1. Jessica Schuler nailed a double into the fence to bring Pennington to third, but they were both left stranded at the end of the inning.

The second inning saw four hits, no runs, and one stranded for the Millers, followed by three hits from the Sandites that failed to land anyone on base.

The Lady Millers furthered their lead in the third inning as Aleah Holman, Factor, and Webb hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, with Factor’s bringing Holman home and Webb’s bringing Factor home. Some impressive batting by Yukon was trumped by even more impressive Sandite fielding and two were left stranded as the home team came in to bat, trailing 4-1.

Salyers got on base with a single off of a fielding error by Webb, and was quickly brought in by a Sydney Pennington homerun that cleared the fence.

Sand Springs tied things up in the fourth inning, holding Yukon scoreless and scoring on a double into the centerfield fence by Salyers that brought Cody Cheatham home.

 The fifth inning saw plenty of hits but no runs by either team. Great fielding by Kimi Presnell helped the home team to prevent any Yukon runs in the sixth inning and the Sandites came in to take the lead at bat. With back-to-back outs to start, Salyers changed the momentum with a single into centerfield followed by Collins. Pennington smacked an RBI single to bring Salyers home, and Schuler was walked leaving the bases loaded. Finally, Kalli Mallory hit a 2RBI single to bring Pennington and Collins home, 7-4.

The Lady Millers didn’t go down without a fight, as Riley Khr and Factor both hit singles and Arnold brought them in on a 2RBI double. Their attempt to retake the lead fell short, however, as Presnell caught an infield fly from Taylor to end the game.

Charles Page is now 16-3 overall and 9-0 in district play, maintaining the top spot in 6A-3 as Yukon drops to 12-6 and 7-1. The Sandites will next take on Tahlequah in the first round of the Coweta tournament Friday morning, and the Millers will travel to Norman next Tuesday. The two teams will get a rematch in a double header at Yukon’s home turf later this month.

Schuler and Collins lead Lady Sandites in 9-6 defeat of Jenks

              The Charles Page High School varsity softball team improved to 14-3 overall Thursday evening at the Sandite Sporting Complex in a 9-6 come-from-behind defeat of the Jenks Lady Trojans. First-Baseman Jessica Schuler led the scoring with 4 RBIs and 1 run, followed by Jessica Collins with 3 runs of her own.

                Junior Sydney Pennington got the start and the win on the mound and Jenks was first at bat. It was a rough beginning as the first batter up hit a double into left field on the fourth pitch of the game, followed by a single then two walks, which left the bases loaded and a Lady Trojan walking in for the point with no outs to start the inning. By the time the home team came in to bat, they were already behind by four runs. This is unusual for a team that wins by an average of 5 runs per game. Kennedy “Goose” Salyers was the lone Sandite to score in the first inning, on a sacrifice fly from Schuler. 4-1.

                The second inning was uneventful as neither team scored, though Pennington got her first of five strikeouts for the evening. Presnell hit a single, but was tagged out trying to steal second.

                Jenks’s Kate Kouplen walked to first to start the third inning, but was tagged out along with Megan Henderson on an impressive double-play by Kimi Presnell who caught the line drive and sent it to Schuler who tagged Kouplen off-base. That duo was the star of the next play as well, as Presnell scooped up a groundball and sent it to first base to tag out Raegan Berkinshaw.

                The bottom of the third is where the Lady Sandites came alive. Salyers and Collins both hit singles. Collins’s went straight through the third baseman’s glove. Pennington was intentionally walked every time she was at bat. With no outs and the bases loaded, Schuler smacked a 2RBI single into right field. Kalli Mallory was walked, then replaced by curtesy-runner Caley Thompson. The bases were loaded once again. Madelyn Blair let loose a sacrifice fly to bring Pennington home. The inning ended tied 4-4.

                Jenks retook the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI double from Brenlyn McCoy which brought home Maggie McClary, followed by Liz Carson coming home on an RBI sacrifice from Ally Ryan. The Sandites returned to bat trailing 6-4. They quickly tied things back up, however, with an RBI Double from Salyers that brought home Presnell, and a sacrifice fly from Mallory that brought home Collins. 6-6.

                Neither team scored in the fifth inning and Jenks failed to get on base in the sixth, which gave the home team the chance to take the lead. Collins and Pennington were both walked. Schuler hit an RBI single that scored Collins. With Pennington on third and Schuler on second, Stella Millican hit a 2RBI single that gave the girls their final score of the evening as the Lady Trojans never got on base in the seventh inning. I asked Stella how it felt hitting that 2 RBI single and she said “It was amazing. It feels like all the hard work is finally paying off.”

                The Lady Sandites are undefeated 7-0 in district play and will travel to Bixby next Tuesday for their next district game.
