Daton Fix three-peats at Kansas City Stampede

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

The 25th (nationally) ranked Charles Page varsity wrestling team was still missing 5 starters at this weekend's tournament, but that didn't stop them from finishing 15th at the national-caliber event, ahead of all 6A Oklahoma teams.

132 pound junior Daton Fix, ranked #1 in Oklahoma and #3 in the nation, improved his high school record to 86-0 with a third-consecutive 1st place finish at the Kansas City Stampede, making him only the sixth competitor in tournament history to win it 3 or more times. Five other Sandites placed in the top-ten.

The Kansas City Stampede is one of the biggest high school tournaments out there. Last year the Sandites came in 6th, but this year settled for 15th with one champion. The team is suffering from a prolonged football season in which more than half a dozen wrestlers, including #4 Lane Lettich and #2 Trace Fleischman, were part of the state runner-up gridiron team. With aims of a state championship, Coach Smith has decided to rest several starters for the beginning of the season to ensure their health later down the line.

4A #1 Tuttle came in 1st place in the tournament with 2 champions and 3 runners-up. Tuttle is ranked 16th nationally by Flowrestling.

Other Oklahoma teams represented at the event include 5A #2 Coweta who finished 7th, #8 Edmond North at 16th, #6 Stillwater at 18th, 5A #1 Collinsville at 23rd, #11 Ponca City at 24th, 3A #3 Perry at 29th, and Southmoore at 38th.

World Champion Kyle Snyder visits Sand Springs Wrestling Tournament

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

Sand Springs has more than its fair share of great wrestlers right here in town. Saturday, however, we were blessed with the opportunity to host the youngest FILA junior world champion from America in more than 20 years.

Sand Springs' Team BIG hosted Kyle Snyder as their weekly technician and the champ put on a technique clinic before the Team Big tournament at Ed Dubie Field House Saturday morning.

Snyder is only 20 years old, and last year he won his title in Las Vegas at only 19. In his first three years of high school he amassed a staggering 179-0 record to win 3 state championships in Maryland. His senior year he decided to forgo high school wrestling and compete internationally as a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

As an Ohio State Buckeye freshman Snyder became the NCAA runner-up. Now Snyder is taking an Olympic red shirt to prepare for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Pictured is Snyder signing autographs for the young people at Saturday's event. The novice portion of the tournament just began at 12:30 so it's not too late to go cheer on Sand Springs's Team Big and meet Snyder.

Sandites headed to national caliber tournament at Kansas City

By: Scott Emigh, Editor-in-Chief

This weekend the Charles Page High School varsity wrestling team will travel to the 10th annual Kansas City Stampede at Hale Arena.

The event will include 40 teams from 11 states, 28 of which placed in the top 4 in their state tournaments last season. More than 150 state medalists and over 40 state champions will participate; several of which have international experience, including our very own Daton Fix.

Fix is the only Sandite to finish first in this tournament, and is one of only 17 wrestlers in the 9 years the event has been held to win it twice. He's also an Olympic silver medalist and World Championship bronze medalist.

Last year the Sandites came in 6th with four wrestlers finishing top-8. Stillwater and Tuttle were the only Oklahoma schools to finish ahead of Sand Springs. This year the Sandites are ranked 25th nationally by FloWrestle. Tuttle is the only other Okie school on that list and they are ranked 18th.

Other teams participating this year include #8 Archer, GA and #19 Neosho, MO from the FloWrestling rankings, and #41 Platte County, MO.

Last year Jack Karstetter placed 9th, Beau Bratcher placed 6th, and Zane Basma took 10th.
