The Class 6A No. 14 ranked Union High School volleyball team (9-19, 5-2) beat No. 12 Sand Springs (16-11, 4-3) in a crucial Frontier Valley Conference match Tuesday evening. The Redskins won 3-1 in sets of 25-14, 17-25, 25-21, and 25-18.

The home team rolled to a handy 25-14 win the first set of the night. Sand Springs’s only lead came on a Madison Burris kill for the first point of the match. Ashlynn Cunningham gave Union the lead once and for all. Things stayed fairly close till a 6-1 Union run made it 15-9. Burris and Madison Blaylock scored kills, Union won six more, Cloe Campfield and Payton Robbins scored kills, then Union closed out on a four-point run capped by a Maddi LaPointe block for the win.

The Sandites came back in set two for a 25-17 win. Devree Youngblood and Campfield scored four kills apiece in the set. Union led by as much as 13-9 after a six-point run, but McKenzie Harris, Campfield, Jacelyn Smith, and Burris scored kills and Raylynn Mong served an ace in a seven-point run for the 21-16 Sandite advantage. Mia Martin broke up the run, but Burris kicked off a four-point streak for the Sandite victory.

Sophomore standout Tierney Jackson scored four-straight kills to start the third set with a 5-1 Union advantage. Campfield broke up the Redskin run with a kill, but Jackson kicked off a 9-1 run for a ten-point lead. Sand Springs tried to rally, cutting it to 24-21 after a Campfield ace and Burris kill, but Martin knocked down a kill for the win. Campfield scored five kills in the set, but Jackson had six for the home team.

Union trailed 13-12 in set four after a block from Payton Robbins and Vanessa Wyrick, but won nine-straight rallies and coasted to the win.

Jackson led all scorers with 19 kills, followed by Campfield with 15. Burris had a double-double for the Sandites with 16 assists and 16 digs. Blaylock led in digs with 22, and tied Campfield with 3 aces.

The loss knocked Sand Springs to fifth in Conference standings, while Union moved up to fourth. The two teams each have two conference matches remaining.

Both teams will host non-conference rematches Thursday with teams they lost to at the Union Invitational last month. Sand Springs will play 5A No. 4 Bishop Kelley (14-10) at 6:00 p.m. They fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) in their last meeting with the Comets. CPHS Volleyball: Sandites place second at Mustang Tournament, Youngblood named All-Tournament

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School (16-10) varsity volleyball team took second place at the Mustang High School Tournament Saturday evening, falling 3-0 to the host team. No. 6 Mustang (21-4) lost only one set in the tournament, to Sand Springs during pool play, to win the tournament for the second-straight year.

Sand Springs was hard on the Broncos’ heels during their first meeting of the tournament, but had a tougher time in the Championship match, falling 25-14, 25-15, and 25-20.

Sand Springs committed as many errors as it scored points in the first set, giving the Broncos an easy 25-14 victory.

They cleaned things up big time in the second game, committing only five errors, but the Broncos also upped their game with an impressive sixteen kills, three aces, and a block. Despite the improved performance, the Sandites were still outmatched 25-15.

Game three was closely contested as the Sandites scored ten kills with aces from Madison Blaylock and Raylynn Mong. They also committed eleven errors to the Broncos’ eight. Those three extra points, together with Mustang’s two blocks, were the deciding factor in the 25-20 loss.

Prior to the Championship match the Sandites beat No. 20 Enid 2-0, No. 16 Choctaw 2-1, and 5A No. 6 Carl Albert 2-0, but fell 2-1 to Mustang in the first match of the tournament.

Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood led the Sandites with nine kills and was named to the All-Tournament team. She averaged 3.7 kills and 3.5 digs per set over the course of the tournament. Mong led the team in assists against Mustang with twelve. Blaylock and Madison Burris led the team in digs with 13.

6’0” junior standout Ruby Kelley led the Broncos against Sand Springs with twelve kills, and Sage McCaskill, Madelyn Booth, and Annabeth Fehrle were also dominant at the net.

The Broncos will return to action Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. with a conference home match against No. 11 Stillwater (13-12). Sand Springs will travel to conference foe No. 15 Union (8-18, 3-2) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Redskins beat Sand Springs 3-0 a month ago at the Union Invitational.

CPHS Volleyball: To the Ship! Sandites upset No. 6 Carl Albert 2-0 in tournament semifinals

Mustang, OK - In ancient Greek mythology the Titans were the supreme race. That is, until they were overthrown by a supposedly lesser set of deities. It’s fitting then that the lesser ranked Sandites pulled off a 2-0 upset against a team of Titans at the Mustang Volleyball Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (16-9) defeated 5A No. 6 Carl Albert (19-6) 25-15 and 25-19 in the Gold Bracket semifinals to advance to their second Tournament Championship this year. The Sandites will play the winner of 6A No. 6 Mustang (19-4) vs. 4A No. 2 Oklahoma Christian (17-2) in the championship round as they look for their second tournament title of the season.

The Carl Albert Titans won their pool earlier that day and were riding a four-match win streak before falling to the Sandites. Senior Cloe Campfield scored 8 kills in the win and sophomore standout Jacelyn Smith had a team-high 4 blocks. Madison Burris led in assists with 10 and Devree Youngblood had a team-high 7 digs.

Sand Springs only trailed once in either set, both times after the opening point. Izzy Brown struck first for the Titans, Sand Springs took the lead, then Abby Boyer tied it at 2-2. That was the closest they would come. McKenzie Harris kicked off a seven-point run for the Sandites and Carl Albert never recovered. The Titans rattled off four straight wins to cut their deficit to 17-12, but Sand Springs won eight of the final eleven rallies to secure the win, capped by an ace from Youngblood.

Boyer scored the first point of set two for the Titans, but Youngblood scored a kill and an ace in a five-point run for the lead. Kaylee Goggans tied it at 6-6 but Sand Springs won four more and led for the remainder of the match. Carl Albert committed only one more error than the Sandites, but trailed in kills, blocks, and aces.
