CPHS Volleyball: Sandites place second at Mustang Tournament, Youngblood named All-Tournament

The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Charles Page High School (16-10) varsity volleyball team took second place at the Mustang High School Tournament Saturday evening, falling 3-0 to the host team. No. 6 Mustang (21-4) lost only one set in the tournament, to Sand Springs during pool play, to win the tournament for the second-straight year.

Sand Springs was hard on the Broncos’ heels during their first meeting of the tournament, but had a tougher time in the Championship match, falling 25-14, 25-15, and 25-20.

Sand Springs committed as many errors as it scored points in the first set, giving the Broncos an easy 25-14 victory.

They cleaned things up big time in the second game, committing only five errors, but the Broncos also upped their game with an impressive sixteen kills, three aces, and a block. Despite the improved performance, the Sandites were still outmatched 25-15.

Game three was closely contested as the Sandites scored ten kills with aces from Madison Blaylock and Raylynn Mong. They also committed eleven errors to the Broncos’ eight. Those three extra points, together with Mustang’s two blocks, were the deciding factor in the 25-20 loss.

Prior to the Championship match the Sandites beat No. 20 Enid 2-0, No. 16 Choctaw 2-1, and 5A No. 6 Carl Albert 2-0, but fell 2-1 to Mustang in the first match of the tournament.

Oklahoma Baptist University-commit Devree Youngblood led the Sandites with nine kills and was named to the All-Tournament team. She averaged 3.7 kills and 3.5 digs per set over the course of the tournament. Mong led the team in assists against Mustang with twelve. Blaylock and Madison Burris led the team in digs with 13.

6’0” junior standout Ruby Kelley led the Broncos against Sand Springs with twelve kills, and Sage McCaskill, Madelyn Booth, and Annabeth Fehrle were also dominant at the net.

The Broncos will return to action Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. with a conference home match against No. 11 Stillwater (13-12). Sand Springs will travel to conference foe No. 15 Union (8-18, 3-2) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Redskins beat Sand Springs 3-0 a month ago at the Union Invitational.
