CPHS Volleyball: Sandites fall 3-1 to No. 14 Union on the road, Campfield scores 15

The Class 6A No. 14 ranked Union High School volleyball team (9-19, 5-2) beat No. 12 Sand Springs (16-11, 4-3) in a crucial Frontier Valley Conference match Tuesday evening. The Redskins won 3-1 in sets of 25-14, 17-25, 25-21, and 25-18.

The home team rolled to a handy 25-14 win the first set of the night. Sand Springs’s only lead came on a Madison Burris kill for the first point of the match. Ashlynn Cunningham gave Union the lead once and for all. Things stayed fairly close till a 6-1 Union run made it 15-9. Burris and Madison Blaylock scored kills, Union won six more, Cloe Campfield and Payton Robbins scored kills, then Union closed out on a four-point run capped by a Maddi LaPointe block for the win.

The Sandites came back in set two for a 25-17 win. Devree Youngblood and Campfield scored four kills apiece in the set. Union led by as much as 13-9 after a six-point run, but McKenzie Harris, Campfield, Jacelyn Smith, and Burris scored kills and Raylynn Mong served an ace in a seven-point run for the 21-16 Sandite advantage. Mia Martin broke up the run, but Burris kicked off a four-point streak for the Sandite victory.

Sophomore standout Tierney Jackson scored four-straight kills to start the third set with a 5-1 Union advantage. Campfield broke up the Redskin run with a kill, but Jackson kicked off a 9-1 run for a ten-point lead. Sand Springs tried to rally, cutting it to 24-21 after a Campfield ace and Burris kill, but Martin knocked down a kill for the win. Campfield scored five kills in the set, but Jackson had six for the home team.

Union trailed 13-12 in set four after a block from Payton Robbins and Vanessa Wyrick, but won nine-straight rallies and coasted to the win.

Jackson led all scorers with 19 kills, followed by Campfield with 15. Burris had a double-double for the Sandites with 16 assists and 16 digs. Blaylock led in digs with 22, and tied Campfield with 3 aces.

The loss knocked Sand Springs to fifth in Conference standings, while Union moved up to fourth. The two teams each have two conference matches remaining.

Both teams will host non-conference rematches Thursday with teams they lost to at the Union Invitational last month. Sand Springs will play 5A No. 4 Bishop Kelley (14-10) at 6:00 p.m. They fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16) in their last meeting with the Comets. Union will host No. 10 Stillwater (13-13) at 6:30 p.m. The Pioneers beat the Redskins 3-1 (26-24, 24-26, 25-15, 25-21) last month.
