#2 Sandites dominate Owasso Rams in season-opener

The Charles Page High School varsity wrestling team easily overcame the Owasso Rams Thursday night in their first competition of the season, and they did it without five starters. 

The unranked Rams entered their match with a 1-1 record, beating Enid 47-24, but losing to #1 Broken Arrow 54-14. 

Sand Springs is starting a bit later than many schools, and the anticipation has been building since Flowrestling listed Sand Springs as the #25 team in the nation.

Several starters are also starting players on the Charles Page State Runner-Up football team and Coach Smith wanted to give them extra time to get in wrestling shape after a long season. 

Those missing links didn't even slow down the Sandites who only lost two matches on the mat, and forfeited two others due to not having anyone at that weight. 

Up first was 106 freshman Riley Weir who shut down his opponent Eric Merida (2-5) with a 10-0 major decision for 4 team points.

113 Michael Ritchey (1-0) expanded that lead to 7-0 with a 3-0 decision over Wyatt Johnson, then 120 Blake Sargent pinned Gavin Damilao in 0:53 for a 13-0 lead.

126 junior #6 (in 113) Jack Karstetter scored a 17-2 tech fall in 3:35 against Jesse Gomez, then his 132 cousin #1 (in 120) Daton Fix pinned #1 Baylor Smith in 3:05.

The Rams didn't put points on the board till Brandon Conrad managed a narrow 5-4 defeat of 138 John Jiminez. Jiminez took a brief 1-point lead on an escape and nearly won it before he was taken down with 10 seconds left and was unable to escape or reverse. Jiminez was a state runner-up two years ago but missed last season due to a pretty serious back injury. Though he's back at 100% physically, this was his first match in over a year and a half.

With a 24-3 lead, 145 junior #4 (in 132) Beau Bratcher pinned Jacob Mitchell in a team best 42 seconds and 152 Cody Mathis ran up the highest scoring match of the dual with a 17-8 major decision over Nolan Miller. 

160 junior (#2 in 145) Zane Basma scored a 1:12 fall against Jalen Johnson and 170 Bryton Beck was right there with him with a pin in 1:08 of Zach Mitchell. 182 John Houston was pinned by JD Johnson, but 195 Zack Sims finished the night off with a 3:09 pin of Harrison Moseby for a 52-9 lead. 

The Sandites didn't have any wrestlers available at 220 and heavyweight so the Rams were awarded 12 points for a final score of 52-21. 

While technically #1 Broken Arrow edged the Rams by slightly more than Sand Springs, the Sandites won it without state qualifier Delvin Jordan, state placer Trace Fleischman, starters Cole Dixon and Gage Fain, and state qualifier Lane Lettich who are all healthy and will be joining the wrestling ranks in the coming weeks. 

Needless to say, it looks like that #25 ranking is well deserved, and Broken Arrow may soon be toppled.

Haddock scores 23 in season opener at Bixby

The #17 Charles Page High School varsity basketball team scored a 50-45 conference victory in their first game of the season at Whitey Ford Athletic Center in Bixby. 

The #20 Spartans were unable to put up an effective defense to a scoring melee by last season's top scorer, sophomore Brooks Haddock. Last year Haddock scored 303 points, but didn't cross the 20 mark in a single game till late January. If Tuesday's victory is any indication of the season-to-come, it's safe to say we can expect further greatness from the young stud.

Behind Haddock was sophomore Colt Savage, son of the head coach, with 11 points and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Defensively, junior Kyle Keener was the star of the show with 10 rebounds and 5 blocks to complement his 4 points.

Senior Arvionte Nichols was also all over the action with 8 points, 7 rebounds, and a steal.

The boys lead the game the whole night and while the Spartans were far from push-overs, there was never any real scare that they might win it. 

Only one Spartan posted double-digits. Senior Parker Jennings scored 18 for his team.

The win is a great start for a team with high expectations. Last season the Sandites had their best record since 2000 and only graduated 1 starter. Head Coach Eric Savage is in his third year now at Sand Springs and has overseen marked improvement each year. Savage took his previous school, Tulsa Memorial, to four state titles in ten years.

JV

The Junior Varsity squad had a much closer battle but ultimately won it in overtime 34-32.

Solid effort against Bixby falls short for Lady Sandites

The Charles Page High School girls' varsity basketball team fell to 1-1 for the season after a couple of strong rallies weren't enough to overcome an early deficit. Junior standout Sydney Pennington led her team both offensively and defensively with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Right behind her was Cierra Scott with 18 points and impressive accuracy, only missing 2 of her 9 shots, and scored 11 points in the third period alone.

#17 Bixby's Addison Richards led both teams with 24 points in the Lady Spartans' 61-51 season-opener at the Whitey Ford Athletic Center Tuesday night.

Last week the #16 Lady Sandites won their season opener in a 59-39 blowout of the Green Country Defenders (home school) at home. Pennington scored a game-high 22 points, aided by Destiny Johnson with 7, Scott with 5, Holly Kersgieter 5, Selena Hitchcock 5, Isabella Regalado 5, Gloria Mutiri 4, Kimi Presnell 3, Lee Leslie 3. 

The Spartans were a much tougher opponent, however, and took a 15-12 lead midway through the first period and only briefly gave it up.

Richards started the scoring with a 2pt field goal, but Kersgieter was right behind her with a layup, followed by a field goal from Pennington to take the lead.

It was a back and forth effort from there. Regan Reinholz sank a 3 to tie it at 9, but Scott retaliated with a 3 of her own, then it was Dariann Myles who tied things up. Richards dropped the game-changing field goal and the Lady Spartans pulled ahead to a 20-14 lead to end the first period.

Pennington went 2-2 on free throws and Kersgieter and Hitchcock sank a few goals to narrow the gap to 22-20, then Hitchcock tied it up at 23 before a Reinholz layup took the lead back.

Already trailing 32-26, the Sandites were put further in the hole by a last-second near-half-court 3-pointer from Myles to end the third that even she was shocked she made. Despite outscoring the Spartans 17-15 in the third, our girls were too far behind to make a comeback in the low-scoring fourth period and Richards iced the cake with the last goal of the game. 

JV

The JV girls were back and forth for most of their game before pulling ahead to a 26-18 win in their first game of the season. Amari Grant led the team with two 3-pointers and one 2-pointer.

Sandite of the Week: Jacob Taber

Senior line backer and defensive captain Jacob Taber earned himself the title of Sandite of the Week with yet another stellar performance. At the 6A-II State Championship game against Bixby, Taber had 11 tackles and arguable the greatest play of the season. 

The Sandites found themselves down 16-7 to the defending state champions going into the half and needed a big play to get things rolling. The Spartans had the ball to start the half. On 3rd and 11 at their 36, Spartan QB Tanner Griffin tried to throw a screen but found Taber's waiting arms for his first interception of the season. 

The interception was one thing, but Taber didn't stop there. Quick on his feet, Taber returned it 11 yards to the 20, and realizing he was about to get tackled, pitched it to Cruz Desjarlais who took it the rest of the way for a touchdown, evening things up to 16-14.

The Sandites would briefly pull ahead to 21-16 on their next drive, but ultimately Bixby would rally to a 38-28 win for their second state title.
