CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites fall 51-38 to Choctaw at State, Kersgieter scores 18

For the second-straight year the Charles Page High School Girls’ Basketball Team (18-8) made it to the 6A State Tournament. This year the No. 13 ranked Lady Sandites overcame a first-quarter thumping to give the defending State Champions a run for their money before running out of steam in the fourth quarter against No. 6 Choctaw High School (23-5).

Choctaw won the opening tipoff and never looked back, building a massive lead in a turnover-ridden opening stanza. Aaliyah Llanusa and Destiny Johnson traded layups, then the Yellowjackets went on a run. Bailey Golden scored back-to-back from both three and two-point range, then Makayla White made it 11-4 before Isabella Regalado hit a three. That didn’t slow Choctaw down any and they rattled off nine more points before Johnson hit a jump shot to break up the streak. Llanusa had the final say of the quarter and took a 22-9 advantage into the second. 

The Sandites wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and Johnson and Regalado hit back-to-back threes to open the second period. Golden and Trinity Gooden hit a pair of twos, then the turnovers began to sway in the Sandites’ favor. University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter scored thrice from the field and twice from the charity stripe to cut it to a manageable 26-23 halftime deficit.

Golden kicked off the second half, Kersgieter responded, Llanusa and Jordan Saxton scored back-to-back, then Kersgieter went on a five-point run. The Yellowjackets rattled off five of their own, then Johnson scored in transition to keep it close. With under a minute in the quarter, Johnson went to the bench with her fourth foul.

Kersgieter made a free throw to start the fourth period, Golden and Kersgieter traded twos, then Choctaw ran away with it. The Yellowjackets scored ten straight before Johnson hit a three, then Crusoe tacked on a pair of free throws to wrap it up. 

Choctaw will play the winner of No. 1 Putnam City West vs. No. 10 Bixby Friday at noon at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center.

CPHS Basketball: 6A State Tournament Preview

After a five-year rebuilding period, the Charles Page High School basketball program has pulled a complete about-face and sent both the boys and girls teams to the State Tournament, possibly for the first time in Sand Springs history. 

In the 2012-2013 season, the boys and girls went a combined 3-41. Both were coming off back-to-back winless seasons in conference action. Eric Savage took over the boys' program, moving up from the 5A circuit where he won three State Championships at Tulsa Memorial High School. Dustin Morrow, a homegrown Sandite, took over the girls' program. 

The Lady Sandites made their last State Tournament appearance in 2010 and won their only State Title in 1994. The boys hadn't made a State Tournament appearance since 1963 and have never won a title. 

Morrow's squad picked up ten wins in its first season and peaked at 24-2 last year with a Frontier Valley Conference Championship and State Tournament appearance, falling 64-54 to Deer Creek in the Semifinals. Morrow is 80-44 in his head coaching career.

Savage's eight wins in his first season were as many as the Sandites recorded in the prior three seasons combined. In 2016 they finished their first winning season since 2000 and this year they made their first Area finals appearance since 1970 to punch their ticket to State. Savage is 65-61 at Sand Springs and 370-154 overall. 

Frontier Valley sends four teams to Girls' State Tournament

No. 3 Owasso (23-3) started the season short-handed and two of their three losses came in December. They are currently riding a fourteen game win streak and will take on No. 7 Edmond Memorial (20-7) Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Comparing mutual opponents they have very similar records, winning by an average margin of 5.8 points. 

No. 13 Sand Springs (18-7) started the season with eight-straight victories, then closed the regular season 7-7. They are currently riding a five game win streak and will take on the defending State Champions in No. 6 Choctaw (22-5) Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The two have only one mutual opponent in Ponca City. Choctaw topped the Wildcats by fourteen, while Sand Springs split two games. The Sandites won by sixteen in the season opener, but lost by ten later in the year. 

No. 2 Bartlesville (26-1) was the only undefeated team left in Class 6A, and one of only four undefeateds in the state when they fell 50-42 to Sand Springs in the Area finals. They will meet No. 4 Edmond Santa Fe (20-6) in the quarterfinals, Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The two are 4-0 against mutual opponents with Bartlesville averaging an 11.25-point victory and Santa Fe winning by a six-point average. 

No. 10 Bixby (20-7) will play No. 1 Putnam City West (22-3) Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The Patriots are 8-0 against mutual opponents with an average victory margin of 30 points, while the Spartans are 3-2 with an average win of 4.4 points. 

The girls' quarterfinal games will all be played at Tulsa Memorial High School at 5840 South Hudson Avenue. The semifinals will be played Friday at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center at 10:30 a.m. and noon. The Mabee Center is located at 7777 South Lewis Avenue in Tulsa. The Championship round will be Saturday at noon. 

FVC and Central Oklahoma send three apiece to Boys' Tournament

No. 6 Edmond Santa Fe (20-6) and No. 7 Putnam City West (20-6) will kick off the tournament at 2:00 p.m. Santa Fe 6-2 against mutual opponents, winning by an average difference of nine points, while Putnam West is 7-2 with an average win of twelve points. 

No. 4 Union (22-4) started the season 4-3, then went 18-1 with their only loss coming to Broken Arrow. They are currently riding a ten game streak and will take on No. 3 Putnam City North (22-5) at 3:30 p.m. Union is 4-1 against mutual opponents, averaging a 26-point win. Putnam North is 6-0, averaging a 27-point win. 

No. 1 Broken Arrow (24-2) is riding a seven game streak after falling 77-70 to No. 8 Owasso (21-6) and will play No. 11 Edmond Memorial (16-11) at 7:00 p.m. Both teams are undefeated against mutual opponents, Broken Arrow winning by ten points on average, and Memorial winning by nineteen. 

No. 10 Sand Springs (19-7) will play No. 2 Norman North (24-2) at 8:30 p.m. in a rematch of their prior year's Area appearance. The Timberwolves are riding a sixteen game win streak. The two have only one mutual opponent this season in Sapulpa, who Norman North beat by five and Sand Springs beat by nine and three. 

The boys' quarterfinals will be held at Catoosa High School at 2000 South Cherokee Street. The semifinals and finals will be at the Mabee Center. Semifinal games will be Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and the Championship round will be Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites headed to State after win over undefeated Bartlesville

CLAREMORE - The undefeated Class 6A No. 2 ranked Bartlesville High School Girls' Basketball team (25-1) is undefeated no more. The Sand Springs Sandites repaid a 53-42 regular season loss with a 52-40 Area Championship win to clinch their spot on the State Tournament bracket.

No. 13 Charles Page High School (18-7) will play the OSSAA 6A State Tournament for the second-straight year after topping the Frontier Valley Conference Champions. Bartlesville will have to beat the winner of No. 11 Norman North (17-8) vs. No. 14 Shawnee (21-4) Saturday afternoon at Daniel Webster High School if they want to make the State Tournament. 

It took Bartlesville half a minute to find a lane on their opening drive. They didn’t find the basket, however, and Destiny Johnson took the rebound to the house. The Bruins missed three field goal attempts and gave up two free throws to Jacie Taber before finding their rhythm with layups from Jena Williams and Erin Shoemaker.

Johnson made two more layups for an 8-4 lead before Avery Allen hit the first three-pointer of the night. Taber hit another from the charity stripe and Holly Kersgieter made a two for an 11-7 lead before Shoemaker completed a three-point play to close the first quarter.

Isabella Regalado and Shoemaker traded threes to start the second period. Regalado went to the line and made one free throw, then Johnson rebounded the second for a 17-14 advantage. Williams made a free throw, then Shoemaker and Williams hit back-to-back threes for the first Bruin lead of the game with two minutes left on the half. Bartlesville held a 24-19 lead to end the period.

The Sandites were explosive in the second half, kicking things off with a three-point play from Kersgieter. Destiny Harris made a three, then the Sandites went on a six-point run. Shoemaker iced another three then Regalado scored five and Kersgieter made three more for the biggest lead of the game at 36-30 before Vivian Culver scored three to end the period.

The Bruins battled back early in the fourth to tie it at 39-39, but Sand Springs ran away with a ten-point streak from there for a double-digit lead with 42 seconds left. 

Kersgieter, a University of Kansas-committed junior, led all scorers with nineteen points, followed by Johnson with twelve, Regalado with eleven, and Taber with eight. Shoemaker led the Bruins with eighteen and Williams contributed thirteen. Johnson had a double-double with twelve rebounds.

CPHS Basketball: Lady Sandites win Regional Championship 60-51 over Bixby

Third quarters haven't been kind to the Sand Springs Lady Sandites this season, and Monday night was no exception. But after blowing an eight-point halftime lead against the Lady Spartans, they doubled down and finished strong, winning their Regional Tournament bracket 60-51 over Class 6A No. 10 ranked Bixby (18-8).

The No. 13 Charles Page High School girls' basketball team improved to 17-7 and advanced to the Area playoffs. They will travel to Claremore Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to take on undefeated Frontier Valley Conference Champion, No. 2 Bartlesville (25-0).

University of Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter, and Destiny Johnson, who also has Division One offers, recorded a team-high nineteen points apiece for the Lady Sandites, while freshman standout Landry Williams posted a game-high 23 for the host team. 

Maddie Bittle scored first, stealing the Sandites’ opening possession. Jacie Taber responded, then both teams traded turnovers before Johnson made a three-point play. Williams and Isabella Regalado traded threes and the Sandites went on a seven-point run for a 12-5 lead. The Spartans wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and rattled off eight of their own. Three-pointers from Williams and Dariann Myles gave the host team a 13-12 advantage to close the first period.

Sarah Tyree kicked off the second period with two, Holly Kersgieter retaliated, then Tyree hit a pair of free throws. Taber and Johnson made back-to-back threes and the Sandites took a 20-17 lead. Kersgieter went on a six point run for the Sandites with three steals to make it 29-20 before Tyree hit a three. Johnson scored a free throw to close the half 30-23.

The Spartans used lethal three-point accuracy to chip away at their deficit, ultimately taking the lead with back-to-back deep balls from Williams in the third period. Johnson scored on a throw in from Kersgieter with a second left to tie it at 42-all.

The basket spit out a jump shot from Johnson in the final stanza, then Williams hit another three to retake the lead. Bree Berge scored on a putback. Myles, Madison Burris, and Bittle exchanged threes, then Kersgieter went on a five point run to jump out front once and for all.

Jacie Taber missed most of the third and fourth quarters after getting into foul trouble, but came back in for a steal and a layup to make it 54-51. It was all desperation fouls from there, and unfortunately for the Spartans the Sandites were 86% from the charity stripe, finishing the game on a thirteen-point streak.

The win gives Sand Springs a little bit of security as they head to the next round of the playoffs. If they lose to Bartlesville, they will get a redemption match against the winner of No. 11 Norman North (17-8) vs. No. 14 Shawnee (21-4). Bixby will have a harder path to the State Tournament, needing to win two more games. First they will play No. 16 Deer Creek (16-9), and if they win that game they will play the loser of No. 3 Owasso (22-3) vs. No. 5 Westmoore (21-4).

CPHS Basketball: Girls win first playoff game 53-48 over Stillwater, Johnson scores 24

The No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls' basketball team (16-7) survived the first round of the Class 6A Regional Playoffs with a 53-48 Friday night win against Stillwater (8-16) at Bixby High School. 

The girls jumped out to a solid 22-14 halftime lead, but Stillwater exploded for 24 points in the third quarter to cut it to 39-38. They scored as many in that stanza as they did in the other three combined, paced by senior star Brooke Rayner. The three-time Class A State Semifinalist, formerly of Pond Creek-Hunter, scored all thirteen of her team-high points in that quarter.

The Sandites did their best to answer, also putting up their biggest single-quarter performance with seventeen points, including three-pointers from Jacie Taber and Isabella Regalado.

The teams were back-and-forth throughout the fourth period till junior standout Destiny Johnson secured the final lead with less than two minutes to play.

Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, followed by Holly Kersgieter with fourteen and Taber with ten. Jaci Littell tied Rayner with thirteen for Stillwater.

The Sandites will return to action Monday at 7:00 p.m. against the host team, No. 10 Bixby (18-6) who defeated Union 54-42 in their first game. Both teams will advance to Area, but the losing team will have to play an additional round to make it to State. The Lady Sandites previously defeated Bixby 69-56 last month.

CPHS Basketball: Regional Playoff preview

The Class 6A No. 13 ranked Charles Page High School girls' basketball team with kick off the first round of playoffs Friday evening in Bixby, followed by the No. 10 boys' team Saturday in Oklahoma City. 

The Lady Sandites finished the regular season 15-7 overall, third in the Frontier Valley Conference, and 3-3 in tournament play. They won the Bishop Kelley Invitational en rout to an 8-0 start to the season and number-one ranking in 6A, then went winless at the Tournament of Champions. They won their last two games of the regular season over unranked competitors following a 61-35 loss to No. 3 Owasso.

Friday at 6:30 p.m. the girls will take on unranked Stillwater (8-15) at Bixby High School. The No. 10 ranked host team will play Union (8-15) at 8:00 p.m. The winners of each game will both advance to the Area Tournament, but will meet Saturday at 7:00 p.m. to decide their seeding. 

Sand Springs has yet to meet Stillwater this season, but is 2-0 against Union and 1-0 against Bixby Sand Springs, Union, and Bixby are each conference foes. The Sandites defeated Union 71-54 and 49-37 and topped Bixby 69-56 three weeks ago at home.

The boys' team finished the season 16-6 overall, 9-5 in conference, and went 5-1 in tournaments, going undefeated at the Memorial Invitational, and placing third at the Duncan Invitational. They ended the season with back-to-back wins after a 97-77 shootout loss at No. 8 Owasso. 

The Sandites will play unranked Jenks (8-15) Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Putnam City West High School in their third meeting of the season. They defeated the Trojans 64-45 and 65-52 in conference play. The No. 7 ranked host team (17-5) will play Bixby (7-16) at 8:00 p.m. The winners will play Monday night at 8:00 p.m. The Sandites have yet to meet Putnam West, but rolled over Bixby 60-42 last month.
