CPHS Baseball: Sandites go 5-1 in scrimmages, kick off season Friday

The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team went 5-1 in preseason scrimmages this month, outscoring their opponents 52-22. They won their first five meetings before falling 7-6 to Collinsville in a Tuesday night walkoff.

They beat Booker T. Washington 10-0, Hilldale 5-0, Tulsa NOAH Homeschool 17-7, Bartlesville 7-3, and Jenks 7-5.

The Sandites came close to an undefeated preseason, coming back from a 5-1 deficit to a 6-5 seventh-inning advantage before allowing the Cardinals to walk off with the win, thanks to a pair of errors and a trio of walks.

The team batted .358 as a whole in the preseason, led by Kaegan Murray with a team-best .750. Murray recorded six hits on eight at-bats with five runs and two RBI. Malachi Burks batted .700 with seven hits on ten at-bats, scoring five runs and seven RBI.

Ethan Sartin had a team-high eight hits. Seth Villines and Keaton Campbell scored a team-best six runs apiece, and Cal Watkins led the team with eight RBI.

Eleven different Sandites spent time on the mound. The bullpen combined for a 1.75 earned run average, throwing 34 hits, 56 strikeouts and 24 walks in 40 innings.

Tyler Ash led the team in strikeouts per inning, throwing seven in three, with no hits and only one walk. Ben Banker saw the most action, throwing nine strikeouts, two hits, and four walks in seven innings. Jaxon Skaggs was next up with a team-high ten strikeouts, six hits, and only one walk in six innings.

The regular season will officially kick off Friday at 5:00 p.m. in a non-district home game against Coweta. They will then travel to Piedmont Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

The Sandites will play the same district teams as last year. They will also compete in the Tate Aggie Classic in Pensacola, Florida, the Tiger/Zebra Classic in Coweta and Claremore, and the Broken Arrow-Bixby Turf War.

Last season Sand Springs went 24-12 under first-year Head Coach James Garrison (38-31). They won both the Tiger/Zebra Classic and the Spartan/Tiger Turf War en rout to a fourteen-game mid-season win streak. They lost twelve varsity players to graduation, but are returning thirteen experienced athletes.

Five Sandite seniors have signed collegiate letters of intent already. Kyler Copeland signed with College of the Ozarks, Watkins signed with Seminole State College, Cale Savage signed with Northern Oklahoma College, and Ash and John Miller signed with Eastern Oklahoma State College.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 41-33 to No. 3 Booker T. Washington, Richardson scores 18

The Charles Page High School boys basketball team got to play on the biggest stage of their careers thus far Saturday evening, at the 4th Annual High School Hoops Showcase at Tulsa’s BOK Center.

The Class 6A No. 6 ranked Sandites (14-5, 8-3) took on No. 3 Booker T. Washington (16-2, 9-1) in a battle for the top spot in the Frontier Valley Conference Standings and held tight till the very end before falling 41-33 in the lowest-scoring game of the season for both teams.

The Hornets missed their six field goal attempts before Trey Phipps gave his team the lead on a reverse layup. Davon Richardson scored the opening two baskets for Sand Springs and assisted Josh Minney with a three-point play for the 7-4 advantage. Richardson hit another basket before Seth Hurd made his way onto the board for the Hornets. Phipps hit the first three of the night to tie it at 9-9 in the final seconds of the first period.

Sand Springs didn’t score a single field goal in the second period, but did work at the charity stripe and only trailed 17-15 after the lowest-scoring half of the season.

Phipps and Michael McHenry hit threes for the Hornets early in the third period, but Richardson got hot with five-straight to tie it at 20-20 and scored the first seven points of the half for Sand Springs. McHenry hit three threes in the third, but Minney scored back-to-back layups to tie it at 26-26 and Fox had the final basket of the period to make it 29-28.

Richardson tied it with a free throw to start the fourth but Phipps scored five and Seth Hurd had two in the Hornets’ longest run of the night before Fox broke it up. Sand Springs entered the final two minutes trailing 38-33 and the Hornets didn’t surrender another point.

Richardson led the Sandites with eighteen points and eleven rebounds for his seventh career double-double. Phipps had the game-high with twenty points.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday on the road at No. 18 Bartlesville (8-10, 2-7) who they previously defeated 64-42 in December. The Hornets will travel to No. 16 Owasso (13-6, 6-4) on Tuesday.

NCAA Wrestling: Undefeated freshman Daton Fix wins Reno Tournament of Champions

Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate Daton Fix has continued his undefeated career at Oklahoma State University with a second-consecutive Reno Tournament of Champions title, improving to 17-0 as a redshirt freshman.

Fix racked up eleven takedowns in a 24-9 technical fall against Cal Baptist sophomore Vince Zavala in only 6:26, and led Oregon State sophomore Devan Turner 12-3 before the Beaver was disqualified with four stalling penalties. In the quarterfinals he teched Old Dominion junior Steven Simpson 18-2 in only 2:52 with three takedowns and twelve nearfall points.

In the semifinals Fix took on former teammate, North Carolina senior Gary Wayne Harding, who, like Fix, was a four-time Oklahoma State Champion in high school. The Cowboy scored takedowns in all three periods for a 10-2 major decision.

In the finals Fix easily easily handled two-time NCAA qualifier, Michigan State senior Anthony Tutolo with four takedowns for a 10-4 decision.

Oklahoma State won the team title with seven champions and 204.5 points. Nick Piccinini (125), Kaden Gfeller (149), Chandler Rogers (165), Jacobe Smith (174), Dakota Geer (197), and Derek White (285) secured titles for OSU while Dustin Hone (149), Jonce Blaylock (157) and Joseph Smith (174) settled for silver. Michigan State placed second with 150.5 points and one champion.

Last month Fix knocked off 2017 NCAA Finalist No. 8 Ethan Lizak 6-1 in a dual with Minnesota, then won 3-0 against No. 12 ranked All-American Montorie Bridges from Wyoming.

Two weeks ago the Cowboys dominated Oklahoma 41-2 in their biggest Bedlam win in 26 years. Fix teched Anthony Madrigal 20-5 in 6:27. In their latest dual the Cowboys blanked Northern Colorado 47-0, aided by a 16-1 Fix tech fall against Sean Cannon, a three-time Nevada State Champion.

Oklahoma State is currently ranked No. 3 in the country with a 5-0 overall record and 4-0 Big Twelve record. FloWrestling has Fix ranked seventh in the 133-pound weight class.

The Cowboys will return to action January 1st at the Southern Scuffle tournament in Chattanooga, against powerhouse programs like No. 1 Penn State, No. 7 NC State, and No. 14 Virginia Tech. No. 4 Tariq Wilson, No. 10 Austin Gomez, No. 17 Roman Bravo-Young, and No. 20 Sean Nickell could all present tough competition for Fix at that event.

On the horizon for Fix is a potential matchup with No. 2 Nick Suriano when the Cowboys travel to No. 25 Rutgers (6-1) after the new year. The two set the world record for longest high school folkstyle match at the FloWrestling Who’s Number One event in 2014. Suriano ultimately won 3-1 at the 31:12 overtime mark.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites handle No. 15 Broken Arrow 54-45

The No. 10 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (3-0, 2-0) continued their undefeated start to the season with a close but solid 54-45 win over No. 15 Broken Arrow in a Frontier Valley Conference matchup at Tiger Field House.

Davon Richardson led the Sandites with sixteen points, followed by Cale Savage with fourteen and Josh Minney with eleven.

The game was a close one for the first half as the Sandites trailed 12-11 after one quarter and only led 22-21 at the half. They blew it wide open in the third quarter, however, giving up only four points for a 37-25 lead that the Tigers couldn’t recover from.

Broken Arrow beat the Sandites in offensive rebounds, blocks, and steals, but Sand Springs excelled in accuracy, going 12-of-13 at the charity stripe, and beating the Tigers in the field as well.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. with a home game against unranked Bartlesville.

CPHS Basketball: Kersgieter and Johnson combine for 48 in 89-56 win at Broken Arrow

Sophomore Darrian Jordan has been a solid playmaker during her first varsity season.

It was a cold night in Broken Arrow but the BA High School Girls’ basketball team turned up the heat at Tiger Field House for a thrilling bout with the No. 4 ranked Charles Page Lady Sandites (3-0, 2-0). While Sand Springs ultimately prevailed by more than thirty points, their unranked conference foes (0-1, 0-1) kept them on their toes for much of the game and only trailed by five at halftime.

For the second game in a row the visitors jumped out to a double digit lead before letting their opponents on the board. Unlike their Friday night massacre of Muskogee, they gave up much of that lead in the second quarter. With a comfortable 20-6 cushion, the Lady Sandites were unprepared for a 28-19 second period resurgence that included a sixteen-point run for the home team.

The back-to-back State Qualifiers settled down in the second half and outscored the Tigers 25-11 in both of the final periods. The Sandites’ three NCAA commits were the heavy scorers. Kansas-commit Holly Kersgieter posted 26 points, closely followed by Tulsa-commit Destiny Johnson with 22, evenly split between the halves, and Northeastern State-bound Isabella Regalado had eighteen.

While Broken Arrow’s sixteen-point run was the longest of the night, Sand Springs had runs of fourteen in the first quarter, nine in the second quarter, nine in the third, and twelve in the fourth.

Just like the game before, the Sandites improved steadily throughout the night, didn’t slow down when they sent in the backups, and ended the night with their biggest lead of the game. Thirteen players made their way onto the court and ten made their way into the scorebook.

The Lady Sandites will return to action at the Bishop Kelley Invitational, where they are back-to-back-to-back champions. They will take on 5A No. 19 Tulsa Memorial (2-0) Thursday at 10:00 a.m.

CPHS Softball: Elizabeth Luttrell signs with Cowley County College

Charles Page High School senior Elizabeth Luttrell signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play softball for Cowley County Community College.

Luttrell was a three-year starting first baseman for the Lady Sandites and finished her career with a .356 batting average, .548 slugging average, .426 on-base percentage, 78 hits, 62 runs, 72 RBI, and nine home runs. She was given an All-District Honorable Mention for the 2018 season.

Cowley College is located in Arkansas City, Kansas and competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II. The Tigers went 42-16 last season under third-year Head Coach Jenny Hoyt.

The Lady Sandites won four-straight Regional Championships during Luttrell’s career, as well as the 2018 Bixby Tournament title and 6A Academic State Titles in 2016 and 2018. They made four State Tournament appearances and one State finals appearance in 2015.
