CPHS Basketball: Sandites headed to State after win over undefeated Bartlesville

CLAREMORE - The undefeated Class 6A No. 2 ranked Bartlesville High School Girls' Basketball team (25-1) is undefeated no more. The Sand Springs Sandites repaid a 53-42 regular season loss with a 52-40 Area Championship win to clinch their spot on the State Tournament bracket.

No. 13 Charles Page High School (18-7) will play the OSSAA 6A State Tournament for the second-straight year after topping the Frontier Valley Conference Champions. Bartlesville will have to beat the winner of No. 11 Norman North (17-8) vs. No. 14 Shawnee (21-4) Saturday afternoon at Daniel Webster High School if they want to make the State Tournament. 

It took Bartlesville half a minute to find a lane on their opening drive. They didn’t find the basket, however, and Destiny Johnson took the rebound to the house. The Bruins missed three field goal attempts and gave up two free throws to Jacie Taber before finding their rhythm with layups from Jena Williams and Erin Shoemaker.

Johnson made two more layups for an 8-4 lead before Avery Allen hit the first three-pointer of the night. Taber hit another from the charity stripe and Holly Kersgieter made a two for an 11-7 lead before Shoemaker completed a three-point play to close the first quarter.

Isabella Regalado and Shoemaker traded threes to start the second period. Regalado went to the line and made one free throw, then Johnson rebounded the second for a 17-14 advantage. Williams made a free throw, then Shoemaker and Williams hit back-to-back threes for the first Bruin lead of the game with two minutes left on the half. Bartlesville held a 24-19 lead to end the period.

The Sandites were explosive in the second half, kicking things off with a three-point play from Kersgieter. Destiny Harris made a three, then the Sandites went on a six-point run. Shoemaker iced another three then Regalado scored five and Kersgieter made three more for the biggest lead of the game at 36-30 before Vivian Culver scored three to end the period.

The Bruins battled back early in the fourth to tie it at 39-39, but Sand Springs ran away with a ten-point streak from there for a double-digit lead with 42 seconds left. 

Kersgieter, a University of Kansas-committed junior, led all scorers with nineteen points, followed by Johnson with twelve, Regalado with eleven, and Taber with eight. Shoemaker led the Bruins with eighteen and Williams contributed thirteen. Johnson had a double-double with twelve rebounds.

CPHS Basketball: Holly Kersgieter receives Division I offers from TU and UMKC

Charles Page High School junior Holly Kersgieter received two more NCAA Division I offers this weekend. The 5'10 guard from the Class of 2019 was offered the University of Tulsa and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Kersgieter was part of an undefeated eighth-grade team that claimed the Frontier Valley Conference Championship before arriving on the varsity squad as a starting freshman. 

In the 2015-2016 season Kersgieter was the number four scorer for a Lady Sandite squad that went 17-9. She scored 166 points for a 6.38 average.

This past season was one of the best in school history as the girls went 24-2 for a Bishop Kelley Tournament Championship and FVC Conference Championship before falling in the State Tournament Semi-Finals.

Kersgieter scored 271 points for an average of 10.42 per game. She was second on the team in scoring, second in 3-point percentage, third in total rebounds, second in assists, first in steals, and second in blocks. She led her team in scoring for nine games and posted a career-best 19 points against Jenks.

She was named the FVC Defensive Player of the Year and made the FVC All-Conference Second Team and Bishop Kelley All-Tournament Team.

The Tulsa Hurricane went 10-21 in the 2016-2017 season and finished ninth the American Athletic Conference standings. They are led by seventh-year Head Coach Matilda Mossman. Mossman holds a career record of 232-197 as a Division I Head Coach, and went 191-53 as a High School Head Coach in Norman.

The UMKC Kangaroos went 10-19 in the 2016-2017 season and finished sixth in the Western Athletic Conference. Jacie Hoyt was named the Head Coach last month after spending three years as an assistant at Kansas State. In her six years of assistant coaching, Hoyt has a career record of 94-97. This is her first Head Coaching position.

Last week Kersgieter received an offer from Oklahoma State University. The Cowgirls went 17-15 this past season and finished seventh in the Big 12 Conference. OSU is coached by Jim Littell, in his seventh year at the helm. He holds an all time Head Coaching record of 737-171.

The No. 3 ranked Charles Page High School Girls' Basketball team (24-1) took on No. 13 Mustang (17-11) in the first round of the OSSAA 6A State Championship Thursday afternoon at Memorial High School and rolled to their tenth-straight victory by a final score of 42-24. They will advance to the State Semi-Finals Friday morning at the Oral Roberts Mabee Center where they will meet with No. 4 Deer Creek (25-2) at 9:00 a.m.

The Sandites made their first two attempts from three point range and missed both, but they found their usual niche in transition as sophomore Holly Kersgieter snagged a steal on the Broncos' first possession and turned it into a layup. Fellow sophomore Destiney Johnson struck next for the Sandites, then Kersgieter sank a three for the 7-0 lead.

Next it was time for the upperclassmen to shine as Ohio State Volleyball-commit Gloria Mutiri sank one from the charity stripe and Oklahoma State Softball-signed senior Sydney Pennington scored on a steal for the double digit lead. Johnson got back in the action with another steal and layup for the 12-0 lead and the Broncos used their second timeout.

Mustang finally got on the board with a steal and layup from Mia Brown, then Ellise Foreman added another basket to cut the lead to 12-4 shortly before the buzzer. The Broncos tried to go to work in the second period and scored four straight after an opening basket from McGee, but after a brief timeout, Sand Springs went right back to furthering their lead. Kersgieter scored four, Pennington added three, and Mutiri had two in the final minutes to take a 23-8 advantage into the locker room.

Mustang opened the second half with a pair of free throws from Abby Niehues but Sand Springs retaliated as Pennington hauled in a defensive rebound and sent it down court to Kersgieter for two. Sophomore Bella Regalado struck from three point range to put three sophomores in the scorebook. By the end of the third the Sandites had pushed their lead to 31-15.

Kersgieter, McGee, and Pennington went on a five point run to open the fourth, then the Broncos did the same to negate the damage. But Sand Springs wouldn't be stymied and Pennington and Johnson hit back to back layups for the 40-20 lead with 4:30 left to play. The offense fizzled out from there and the Sandites held on for a 42-24 victory.

Kersgieter led all scorers with 16 points as the only player in the game with double digits. Pennington posted nine and Johnson had eight. Neihuis led the Broncos with eight points.

The Lady Sandites' Friday morning opponent won their quarterfinal 49-42 over No. 6 Booker T. Washington (22-6), who the Sandites defeated 56-44 in the Area Championship.

The No. 3 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (22-1) erased a sloppy start to defeat No. 17 Union High School (14-11) by a final score of 58-46 to win the Regional Championship Saturday afternoon at Broken Arrow High School.

Lady Redskin De'Asia Thomas got the game underway with a layup that was quickly answered by a three ball from Kierra McGee. Ohio State University volleyball-committed junior Gloria Mutiri made a pair of free throws, but Taylor Malham scored through contact and made the bonus free throw, followed by a three pointer from Sadie Moyer. After a timeout was called by Sand Springs the Lady Sandites got things going a bit. Oklahoma State University softball-signed senior Sydney Pennington made a pair of layups and McGee hit a jumper. The Lady Redskins led 17-11 going into the second quarter. 

The second quarter got off to a much better start for the Lady Sandites as Mutiri hit a layup and Holly Kersgieter scored seven-straight points. Malham made a layup to stop the bleeding for Union, only to see McGee hit her second three pointer. The Lady Redskins went on a brief 5-0 run, but McGee hit her third three of the game in the final seconds of the first half to put Sand Springs up 28-25 at the break.  

Both teams came out for the second half fighting. Malham and Thomas combined for all 15 third quarter points for Union. Pennington scored eight of her team high 14 in the third, as well as Destiny Johnson and Isabella Regalado getting on the board. The fourth quarter would get under way with the Lady Sandites up by four. 

Sand Springs refused to relent, however, scoring the first eight points of the quarter to push the lead to 12, a number that was insurmountable for the Lady Redskins as they were unable to cut the lead to single digits for the remainder of the game. Pennington hit a pair of free throws followed by a Regalado triple. Mutiri posted up for a layup followed by a breakaway layup for Kersgieter, and McGee sealed the game with a pair of free throws. 

Four Lady Sandites scored in double figures led by Pennington who also pulled in a game high 10 rebounds. Malham led all scorers with 25 for Union. 

Both teams will advance to the Area playoffs after winning their first Regional games. Sand Springs will take on No. 6 Booker T. Washington (21-4) next weekend, with the winner advancing to State. Union will face No. 9 Norman North (15-9) in the first game of the Area Consolations. The winner of that game will face the loser of Ponca City (15-6) vs. No. 5 Putnam City West (23-2) for the ticket to State.

The No. 3 ranked Charles Page High School girls basketball team (17-1) visited the No. 15 Broken Arrow Lady Tigers (11-9) and dealt the home team a twenty-point loss for the second time this season. Sophomore standout Holly Kersgieter led all scorers with 16 points, and four Lady Sandites scored seven-apiece. None of the Lady Tigers broke double digits. 

It took the Sandites a few possessions before they found their offensive mojo, leading only 11-6 after the first quarter while shooting 30% on field goals. Jalise Smallwood hit a three for the Lady Tigers to start the second period, followed by a two-point response from Kierra McGee.

The Sandites finally turned up the heat midway through the quarter and shot 50%. Sydney Pennington snagged a steal, was fouled on a layup, and made the free throw. Holly Kersgieter scored on back-to-back possessions and the visitors held a 20-9 lead. Smallwood put an end to the streak, but Pennington got the final say of the half, rebounding a free throw from Mutiri for the final points, then rebounded Kinsey Callen on the opposite end of the court to carry the 22-11 advantage into the locker room.

Sand Springs came out pumped after halftime and scored the first points of the half on a free throw from Mutiri and a layup from Pennington. Angelica Cuellar hit a two, then Kersgieter, Cuellar, and Bella Regalado all sank threes. Danyell Moore hit a pair from the charity stripe on a foul from Regalado, then sent Regalado to the stripe for a pair. Johnson closed out the period with two field goals and a penalty shot for the 38-18 lead.

The fourth quarter started out even better for the Sandites. Mutiri hit a two and Kersgieter added a three before Brook Bowker hit a three for the Tigers. The Sandites went on a seven-point run from there and finally subbed in the second string with 3:00 remaining and a 50-21 advantage. Jessica Collins got into the scoring action for Sand Springs and finished with four points as the home team outscored the visitors 8-4 in the final minutes to end the game 54-32.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Friday when they host No. 14 Bartlesville (11-7), who they have already defeated 51-34 earlier this season. Broken Arrow will host No. 17 Union (10-9), who they lost to 41-36 earlier this year.
