CPHS Basketball: Girls Upset No. 2 Union, Boys Routed

The Union High School girls’ basketball team managed an impressive feat Tuesday night at the UMAC. It didn’t give up a single field goal to Sand Springs senior star Journey Armstead.

Unfortunately for the RedHawks, Armstead put in work from the free-throw line instead, going 10-of-13 with eight points in the fourth quarter to lift her team to a 38-34 upset.

6A-East No. 4 Charles Page High School (13-3) won a war of attrition against No. 2 Union (12-4), taking advantage of three RedHawk foul-outs in the final two minutes to jump from fourth to second in the Frontier Valley Conference.

“I just love it for my girls,” said Sand Springs head coach Josh Berry. “They went out there and fought hard.”

The Sandites have been through a rough patch lately, losing three of their last four games against top-ranked foes Edmond North, Bixby, and Sapulpa.

“They’re going out there against a well-coached team in Union,” said Berry. “But you know, we’re a good team too. So to be able to finally come out with a win against one of those top teams shows that we are a top team as well.”

“I think that’s huge. I think they responded, they learned from some of the losses that we had, and they bonded together today.”

The Sandites were held to their lowest scoring total of the season in the first half and trailed 17-13, but came storming back in the third quarter.

Armstead drew her fourth foul two minutes into the third quarter and spent much of the half on the bench. Layne Kirkendoll scored four points in that stanza and three-pointers from Sakauri Wilson and Taiona Morris lifted the visitors to a 27-24 advantage.

“We had some big contributions with Journey being in foul trouble and some people stepped up today,” said Berry. “That’s what you need to advance and survive from here on out.”

TK Pitts scored through a foul from Hailey Jackson and hit the free throw for one final Union lead at 31-30 with 1:40 left to play, but it was all Sand Springs from there.

Sydni Smith fouled out with 1:31 to play and sent Armstead to the line for two. Then Aubrey Hishaw fouled out with 1:05 to play and sent Armstead to the line for two more. Finally, Pitts fouled out with 41 seconds left and sent Wilson to the line.

Pitts, an SMU commit, led all scorers with 12 points, but was the only RedHawk in double digits. Jackson and Armstead scored 10 apiece for the Sandites. Kirkendoll finished with 6 points and 10 rebounds, and Wilson added 7 points.

Sand Springs also benefited from the brief return of 5’10” sophomore Kiaryn Taylor, who has been out with injury since early in December.

“That’s big for us,” said Berry. “She gives us another versatile person. She’s still struggling right now, but as she gets better, she’s only going to help us more.”

A 58-52 Bixby win over Sapulpa helped lift Sand Springs to second place in conference standings, but the Sandites don’t control their own destiny. With no rematch against Bixby on the horizon, it’ll take the Spartans stumbling against some other conference foe for the Sandites to climb the totem pole further.

Either way, winning the conference isn’t that important to Berry and his Sandites.

“We focus on trying to get better each and every game,” said Berry. “We want to continue to play together and just advance. We don’t worry about that. If we’re winning, it’ll come.”

The RedHawks will return to action Friday in a rematch at 5A-East No. 1 Sapulpa (12-5, 5-3). Union won the first meeting this year 40-36 in the season opener.

Sand Springs will travel to No. 10 Owasso (8-10, 3-6) Friday. The Sandites previously beat the Rams 54-37 in the season opener.

Boys Basketball

Coming off back-to-back losses in Frontier Valley Conference action, the 6A-East No. 7 RedHawks needed a win, and they got a big one Tuesday night against No. 14 Sand Springs.

6’3” sophomore Dalen Fuller scored 28 points in a 79-38 rout of the Sandites as the RedHawks improved to 9-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

The Sandites (5-11, 1-7) led 20-16 early in the second quarter but soon fell out of pace with the taller, faster RedHawks. Union stormed to a 44-25 halftime advantage and had the game safely locked away after outsourcing the Sandites 23-7 in the third.

Chris Mason added 16 for the RedHawks and Trent Pierce had 14. JD Dickson led the Sandites with 12.

Union will travel to 5A-East No. 14 Sapulpa (4-14, 0-9) Friday. The RedHawks previously beat the Chieftains 91-45 in December. Sand Springs will get a rematch with No. 5 Owasso (12-6, 7-2) on Friday, who won the first meeting 47-44 in overtime.

Boys Basketball: Sandites get first conference win, 62-46 against Sapulpa

In a battle for last place in the Frontier Valley Conference, Sand Springs finally got a much-needed 62-46 win against Sapulpa, Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

The 6A-East No. 14 Sandites (5-10 overall, 1-6 conference) out-shot and out-rebounded 5A-East No. 14 Sapulpa (4-12, 0-7) to win their third-straight Highway 97 Rivalry meeting.

“It feels good,” said Sand Springs head coach Eric Savage. “We’ve been close several times this year and we just haven’t been able to finish.”

“Sapulpa’s kind of having a year similar to ours, and we knew this was going to be two teams that were really hungry for a win. I thought from the tip we came out focused and executed, and really controlled the game.”

The Sandites took a 6-0 lead out of the gate and never trailed, though the score stayed close till midway through the fourth quarter.

“We had a few lapses in there and Sapulpa kept coming at us, but overall I thought they followed the game plan and we were able to keep them at bay,” said Savage.

Sand Springs took a 31-23 lead into the half and a 44-32 lead into the fourth quarter, with its biggest advantage being a 16-point lead early in the final stanza.

The visiting Chieftains then mounted a comeback attempt, scoring ten in a row, kicked off by a Gavin Read layup through contact. Read missed his and-one opportunity, but Kylen Edwards made the putback and drew a foul of his own, sinking the free throw.

Charles Hobbs scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 48-42, but it was all Sand Springs from there.

“We just had to keep attacking,” said Savage. “A couple of times we got slow and quit running. I tried to tell them, ‘we’re playing to win, we’re not playing not to lose.’ I thought we got a little tentative there with what to do with the ball.”

Edwards led all scorers with 20 points, but Jaymason Lindsey was the only other Chieftain in double digits with 12 points.

Jason Clark and JD Dickson led the Sandites with 12 points apiece, followed by Kooper Kelly with 10. Ethan Oakley, Cale Askew, and Costen Brockman added 8 points apiece, and Oakley had 15 rebounds.

“We’re making improvements,” said Savage. “It’s hard to see in our conference sometimes because of how top-heavy and good it is, but we’re making improvements, we’re shooting the ball better, we’re passing the ball better. We struggled early in the year when people would press us, and we’re doing a much better job of that.”

The Sandites will embark on another tough week on the road with a Tuesday game at No. 5 Union (8-8, 4-4) and a Friday battle at No. 6 Owasso (11-6, 6-2).

Sapulpa will host Bixby (6-10, 1-6) on Tuesday and Union on Friday.

In junior varsity action the Sandites won 65-40 behind 17 points from Alijah Roper and 11 from Kade Holland.

Sandite Boys place fourth at Port City Classic, beat Catoosa 47-44

The Sand Springs boys’ basketball team (4-9) snapped a three-game losing skid Thursday, taking down Catoosa 47-44 en route to a fourth place finish at the Port City Classic.

The Sandites fell 54-37 to 4A No. 2 Victory Christian (13-3) in the semifinals, however, and 47-46 to No. 19 Tahlequah (10-5) in the placement round.

Jason Clark scored 15 and Ethan Oakley had 13 points to guide their team to its first win of 2022.

Catoosa took a 32-31 lead into the fourth quarter, but freshman Kooper Kelly came alive and scored all seven of his points in that stanza, while Oakley and Clark went a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line in crunch time.

Clark scored ten more on Friday, but was the only Sandite in double digits against the Conquerors, who went on to win the tournament.

Saturday’s game was a real heartbreaker, as the Sandites had it all but locked away late in the fourth quarter.

With only 23.3 seconds remaining, Clark laid up on a steal for a 46-41 Sandite lead.

The Tigers wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and Braylon McDowell hit a three with nine second remaining, then Shaun Young sent Kelly to the line for a one-and-one.

After the freshman missed his free throw, Hayden Smith snagged the rebound and the Tigers took a timeout to dial up a three-point buzzer beater from Brycen Smith for the win.

Clark once again led the Sandites with 14 points in the loss.

Up next for the Sandites is a return to conference action with a Frontier Valley road game at Bixby (5-9, 0-5) on Tuesday. Both teams are still looking for their first conference win of the season.

Sports Roundup: Lady Sandites Still Undefeated, Wrestling Falls to Bixby

Hailey Jackson scored 31 points for the Sandites against Broken Arrow.

This story was originally written by Scott Emigh for the Sand Springs Leader.

The last time the Sand Springs girls basketball team won ten straight games to start the season, it went on to win conference, regional, and area championships.

Whether this year’s eighth-ranked Lady Sandites reach similar heights remains to be seen, but they are still undefeated after meetings with No. 10 Broken Arrow and Bartlesville this week.

The Sandites picked up a 66-46 win over the Tigers (6-4, 2-2) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House before traveling to Bartlesville for a 55-37 win against the Bruins (3-7, 0-4) to improve to 5-0 in Frontier Valley Conference action.

Junior star Hailey Jackson went off for 31 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals against the Tigers, while Journey Armstead contributed 15 points. Layne Kirkendoll added 8 points and 9 rebounds.

“(Jackson)’s just coming along and playing hard,” said head coach Josh Berry. “I’ve always said she had the potential to be that good.”

The Sandites led by as much as 28 points early in the fourth quarter before sending in the backups.

Friday’s game started a little slower, but the Bruins never led after the first quarter and the Sandites ran away with a 22-4 third quarter to put the game safely out of reach.

“Every game for us in this conference, you’ve got to prepare for it,” said Berry. “If you’re not ready to play, you can get beat. Especially the way we play. We’re a defensively oriented team, so if we don’t come ready to play every night, we can get beat by anybody.”

Armstead scored 23 points with 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Jackson scored 8 points with 10 rebounds and Kirkendoll added 6 points with 11 rebounds.

The Sandites will host Muskogee (1-6, 0-3) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before competing at the Jenks/Union tournament Thursday through Saturday. They will play Jenks (2-5) on Thursday before taking on either Trinity Christian or No. 1 Edmond North (10-0) on Friday.

Boys Basketball

The Sandite boys team (3-7, 0-5) is still looking for its first conference win of the season after falling 70-47 to Broken Arrow and 82-54 to Bartlesville this week.

On Tuesday the Sandites were led by Jason Clark with 10 points and Cale Askew with 9 in the home loss to No. 6 Broken Arrow (8-2, 4-1). Clark and Alijah Roper scored 12 apiece against No. 14 Bartlesville (6-4, 3-2).

Sand Springs will get its first unranked opponent in over a month when they play Muskogee (2-6, 0-3) on Tuesday. They will then travel to Catoosa for the Port City Classic with a Thursday matchup against the home team (9-4) at 8:30 p.m.

Wrestling

On Thursday the Sandites (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season, falling 47-24 to No. 5 Bixby (5-1).

David Ritchey and Colt Hood pinned their foes to start the dual, then Zander Grigsby and Jayden Pait won decisions for an 18-0 lead against last year’s Dual State Runners Up.

The Spartans won the next eight matches, however, before Mason Harris collected a fall at heavyweight to end the night.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday at Union with a district triple-header against No. 10 Ponca City (1-2), No. 15 Union (1-4), and Edmond Deer Creek (0-3). The Sandites won five district titles in a row from 2016 to 2020 before coming up short last season.

The Sandite junior high team placed second at the Perry tournament over the weekend with three finalists.

Kase Skaggs, Kaden Pope, and Ryley Kester all placed second and Dawson Briscoe, Jaxon Grigsby, and Jaxon “Scout” Trotter placed third.

Lady Sandites roll Booker T. Washington 60-40, Boys fall 69-58

This story was originally written for the Sand Springs Leader.

After a tournament victory and day at the beach, the Charles Page High School girls’ basketball players didn’t get off their plane from Florida to Tulsa until nearly 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Jet lag and sleep deprivation couldn’t hold them back from a 60-40 drubbing of No. 14 Booker T. Washington, however.

The No. 8 Sandites struggled for all of four minutes before finding their offense and soon imposed their will on the Hornets (3-6 overall, 1-2 conference) in the second quarter.

Marcayla Johnson scored on the Hornets’ first two possessions while the Sandites missed on their first five field goal attempts, and the home team led 5-0 before Journey Armstead’s layup broke the seal on the Sandites’ basket.

Washington took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter after a three-pointer from Aunisty Smith, but the visitors outscored them 15-4 from there for the halftime advantage.

The home team played a close third quarter and only trailed 39-27 to start the final stanza, but Taiona and Leyshia Morris combined for three threes and the Sandites soon had the game comfortably put away.

The Sandites improved to 8-0 for the first time since 2017 and are on their longest win streak of the Josh Berry era. It also marked Berry’s first win against his alma mater since arriving at Sand Springs.

“It is my alma mater, but it just feels good to get a win here,” said Berry. “I knew this was going to be a tough one. Two days of not playing, not practicing, and then getting off the plane at one o’clock, so I’m just proud of them. They just fought through it and found a way to win.”

Armstead led all scorers with 16 points and 6 rebounds, Leyshia Morris had 12 points, Hailey Jackson scored 11 points with 8 rebounds, and Layne Kirkendoll scored 8 points with 7 rebounds and 4 blocks.

The Sandites outperformed the Hornets in every statistical category but free-throw percentage, combining for 29 rebounds, 10 steals, and 11 assists, while shooting 47% in the field.

“We’ve got some players that are stepping up and getting better and better each and every game,” said Berry. “We just need more players to keep stepping up and staying positive.”

Sand Springs’ closest margin of victory this season was 17 points in the season opener against Owasso, and they’re winning by an average of 34 points per game.

The Sandites are 3-0 in Frontier Valley Conference action and will return to action Tuesday against No. 12 Broken Arrow (4-3, 2-1). The Hornets will look to snap a four-game skid Tuesday at 5A No. 2 Sapulpa (5-2, 2-1).

Sandite Basketball takes a beating at Jenks

This story was originally written by Scott Emigh for the Tulsa World.

If the No. 3 Jenks boys’ basketball team (4-0 overall, 2-0 conference) was looking for a statement win, it found it Tuesday against No. 16 Sand Springs (2-2, 0-2). The Trojans dealt Eric Savage the biggest defeat of his Sand Springs career, 84-35, in a game that saw little drop off in second or third-string action.

“Eric is the best in our business at managing games,” said Jenks head coach Clay Martin. “We were trying to create a tempo as early as we could, because he’s so good at slowing the game down for his team.”

The Sandites have a reputation for playing gritty, low-scoring games against higher ranked opponents. In the last meeting between the two teams, the unranked Sandites beat the No. 8 Trojans 43-40 in last year’s Regional playoffs.

“We have a lot of respect for him and that program,” said Martin. “We were just lucky to get a tempo going and create some run-outs early, which got the momentum going.”

The Trojans were fresh off a tournament title from Tahlequah, where they beat Tahlequah Sequoyah 90-19, then edged out Muskogee 59-52 and Moore 60-58 in overtime.

“All the credit in the world to our guys,” said Martin. “Coming off a big tournament win, you come back and we were wondering how we were going to respond. I think with the experience we have and the leadership we have on the floor, we were ready to go.”

Chase Martin led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Benjamin Averitt with 13, and Deke Thompson with 11.

Thompson scored all of his points from the bench, in the fourth quarter, and the backups accounted for 33 in the lopsided affair.

“Obviously when you’ve got a little lead, the rim gets bigger,” said Martin. “I was really proud to see a lot of our guys who don’t always get a lot of minutes get in there and have some opportunity.”

The Trojans will try to ride that momentum into the Tournament of Champions on December 27th with a first-round game against 2A No. 2 Cashion (1-0).

Sand Springs will take three weeks off before traveling to No. 12 Booker T. Washington (2-0, 2-0) after the new year.
