Sandites Crown Six Champions at Union Open

The Sand Springs wrestling team crowned six champions at the Union/Pryor Ice Fighter Open Saturday in Tulsa, including three high schoolers and three junior high wrestlers.

High School Boys

Preston Reyna won the 144A bracket with three pins, taking out Broken Arrow’s Robert Miller in the finals in 2:41.

Zander Grigsby won the 175A bracket, outscoring his opponents 25-2 with two decisions and a 13-0 major decision against Stillwater’s Noah Perkins in the finals.

Jaxon Grigsby was runner-up at 132BA, outscoring his first four foes 47-1 with three major decisions and a technical fall before falling 1-0 to Coweta’s Toby Shipman in the finals.

Peyton Callis was runner-up at 190, pinning his first two opponents and winning a 7-5 decision against Broken Arrow’s Braden Jones in the semis before falling 6-2 to Stillwater’s Parker Brown in the finals.

Kase Skaggs placed third at 120B, pinning his first two foes before falling to Broken Arrow’s Hudson Beckley. In consolation he won a pair of decisions.

Jaxon Trotter placed third at 175B, with a major decision, a technical fall, and a pin. He fell 11-0 to Edmond North’s Jude Randall in the semifinals but pinned Union’s Jeremiah T’eo in the consolation finals.

Ayreson Reiss placed fourth at 113A, winning three decisions in the consolation bracket, with both of his losses coming to the same wrestler. Broken Arrow’s Bradley Lazzerini pinned Reiss in the first round and received a medical forfeit in the placement match.

Matthew Moore placed fourth at 138A with two pins and a decision, only losing a pair of decisions including a close 7-6 finale against Poteau’s Jake Fredrickson.

Colt Chambers finished with a winning 3-2 record at 132BA, pinning his first three foes in the first period before being eliminated one round short of placement.

High School Girls

Ambrielle Chambers won the 105 bracket with three first-period falls, taking down Enid’s Kadence Fuksa in the finals.

Trinity Owens placed third at 115, losing her first match to Broken Arrow’s Kristen DeLaRosa before pinning her next two opponents in the first period.

Laila Mirza placed third at 120, pinning her first opponents in 0:24 before giving up a fall in the semifinals to Broken Arrow’s Emily Beckley. In consolation she won a 7-0 decision before pinning Union’s Ma’Kadrian Titus in 18 seconds.

Audree Robinson placed fourth at 130, winning a 12-3 major decision in the consolation semifinals before falling to Henryetta’s Kiley Haywood.

Kayla Arnold went 2-2 at 140 with a decision and a pin, but was eliminated one round short of placement.

Junior High Boys (8th/9th Grade)

Kaden Pope won the 132-pound bracket with four pins and a 10-2 major decision over Owasso’s Jaxon Truitt in the finals.

Hunter Fields placed third at 155 with four pins and an 11-0 major decision, only falling 7-0 to Booker T. Washington’s Maximus Houston in the semifinals. In the consolation finals he pinned Fort Gibson’s Kolt Stevens in 2:52.

Brody Wilson went 4-2; Caleb Childers and Joshua Compton went 3-2; and Andrew Price, Kellen Foster, Conner Mcentire, Elijah Hadley, Camryn Ewing, and Blake Norton all went 2-2, but were eliminated short of placement.

Junior High Girls

Kenzi Johnson took first place at 89 pounds with an 18-3 technical fall and a pin of Ponca City’s Jaycee Wardlow in 1:02 in the finals.

Savannah Taylor was runner-up at 102 pounds, outscoring her first two opponents 19-2 before falling to Broken Arrow’s Jaylyn Lazzerini in the finals.

Lyla Waldren placed fourth at 102 with a sudden-victory decision and a pin, with both of her losses coming to Cleveland’s Hannah Stephenson.

Faith Humble went 2-2 but was eliminated short of placement.

Boys Middle School (6/7th Grade)

Brody Flores was runner-up at 73 pounds, going 2-1 in a round robin with a decision and a forfeit.

Gage Buchanan went 2-2 at 119 but was eliminated short of placement.

Girls Middle School

Kambyr Lee won the 145-pound bracket with two pins.

Chloe Strawn placed third at 82, pinning McAlester’s Lily Dykens in 1:56.

Liz Cline placed third at 126 with a decision and a forfeit.

Baylin Maynard placed third at 138 with two first-period falls.

Brylee Smith placed fourth at 155.

The Lady Sandites also recently held the program’s first ever junior high dual meet at Cleveland, falling 48-30.

Griffin Sensintaffar & Kaden Pope Win Broken Arrow Open

The Charles Page High School boys wrestling team took fourth place and the Lady Sandites placed ninth at the 32nd Annual Joe Zamora, Skyler Holman Open in Broken Arrow this weekend.

The junior high girls placed eighth, the sixth/seventh-grade girls placed sixth, the junior high boys placed sixth, and the sixth/seventh-grade boys placed seventh.

High School

Junior Kase Skaggs placed third at 120 pounds with a pin, a tech fall, and two decisions. In the quarterfinals he won a 6-1 decision over McAlester’s Kam Hutchison, a returning 5A State finalist. Skaggs’s only loss was a semifinal fall against Broken Arrow State qualifier Hudson Beckley.

Freshman Kasen Mcaffrey placed third at 144 pounds, pinning his first opponent before losing a close 9-6 decision to Broken Arrow’s Robert Miller. He bounced back with a pair of decision in consolation, edging out two-time Sapulpa State qualifier Ethan Peterson 4-2 in the finals.

Freshman Corbin Wooley placed fourth at 150 pounds with two pins. His only losses were pins by two-time Arkansas State Champion Benjamin Smith and Broken Arrow State qualifier Kadence Roop.

Junior Peyton Callis placed fourth at 190 pounds with two pins and two major decisions, only falling 4-0 to Union State qualifier Wura Yinusa before getting pinned by Broken Arrow’s Braden Jones in the finals.

Junior High

Griffin Sensintaffar took first place at 86 pounds, dominating his bracket with two pins and a 16-0 technical fall.

Kaden Pope won the 132-pound bracket with three pins, including a fall in the finals.

Kenzie Johnson took second place at 70 pounds with one pin.

Rylee Allen placed third at 121 pounds with five pins, all in the first period.

Stefanie Ortiz placed fourth at 172 pounds, winning three decisions, including back-to-back sudden victories in overtime.

Middle School

Gage Buchanan was runner-up at 119 pounds with one fall and an 11-0 major decision.

Rowdy Ash placed third at 80 pounds with one pin, outscoring his opponents handily while only falling 4-2 in the semifinals in sudden victory overtime.

Zailyn Garland placed third at 80 pounds with two first-period falls and a 12-6 decision in the consolation finals.

Kambyr Lee placed third at 142 pounds with two pins.

Baylin Maynard placed fourth at 129 pounds with one pin.

Sandites End Season in Regional Finals, Fall 5-2 to Edmond Memorial

Kylie King drove in both Sandite runs with a double in the 5-2 loss.

Sand Springs matched up well against Edmond Memorial at the plate but third inning mistakes were the difference maker as the defending State Champions prevailed 5-2 to end the Sandites’ season Friday afternoon in the Regional tournament finals.

Memorial (26-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a home run from Beth Damon, but the Bulldogs did most of their damage in the third when two walks and two errors put the home team up 4-0.

Chenna Davidson scored her team’s fifth and final run on a sacrifice hit after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch.

Sand Springs averted the shutout in the sixth with a pair of singles from Lakelyn Harger and Ashlyn Clark and a two-run double from Kylie King.

Kelsi Hilton ended her high school career stranded at first base on a seventh-inning single.

King (2-3) got the loss in the circle, surrendering four hits, one earned run, and two walks in four innings. Addison Hughes (12-7) got the start and allowed three hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings.

Lilly Stephens got the start for the Bulldogs, throwing three hits, three walks, and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings but Keegan Baker got the win with four hits, no walks, and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Charles Page High School wrapped up the season with a 19-15 mark. The girls will graduate four players this season: Morgan Rector, Hilton, Gracey Massey, and Natalia Delgado. The senior class of 2024 went 87-53 during its career.

Rector and Hilton will have compelling resumes for potential All-State accolades and Hilton is committed to playing at Southern Nazarene University next season.

Edmond Memorial will join Southmoore (21-11), Moore (31-3), Broken Arrow (30-3), Owasso (33-1), Edmond Deer Creek (25-6), Mustang (23-6), and Choctaw (22-10) at the 6A State Tournament on October 12th in Oklahoma City’s USA Hall of Fame Stadium Complex.

Broken Arrow Sweeps Sandite Volleyball 3-0

The Charles Page High School volleyball team is still looking for its first conference win after falling 3-0 to No. 5 Broken Arrow (16-7, 5-1) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Sand Springs (11-11) dropped to 0-6 in the tough Frontier Valley Conference despite playing a fairly competitive match against the perennial powerhouse.

The Tigers ran away with the first game, building momentum behind an eight-point run early in the set to go up 17-3.

Sand Springs responded with a five-point streak of its own behind kills from Brooklyn Shope and Averi Tippit, but Broken Arrow got hot once again and closed out the set with an 8-1 run.

The next two games were much closer, however.

After falling behind 12-5 early in game two, the Sandites cut their deficit as close as 16-13 but could never quite tie it up. Broken Arrow pulled away to win 25-19.

Game three stayed close much longer as the Sandites only trailed 10-9 midway through, but from then on it was one step forward and three steps back before Broken Arrow prevailed 25-15.

Despite the loss, the Sandites were impressive at times, extending the rallies with exceptional defense.

Evyn Morrow recorded 21 digs, followed by Adelynn Ray with 12. Jayden Smith showed off on both sides of the ball with eight digs and a team-high six kills to tie Shope. Hannah McKelvey had 10 assists.

The Sandites will look to get back above .500 when they host 5A No. 6 Sapulpa (23-11, 1-4) on Tuesday.

Sapulpa previously beat Sand Springs 2-0 (25-23, 25-12) at the Claremore Invitational, but the Sandites are the defending Highway 97 Rivalry champion after winning the conference match 3-1 last year.

Hughes & Hilton Pitch Perfect Games on Senior Night - Sandites Shut Out Hornets

There’s no telling how many hundreds of players Shelli Brown has coached in her 27 years at Charles Page High School, but she still got teary-eyed when she reflected on her current class Thursday evening on Senior Night.

“Senior Night is a tough one,” said Brown, after her team won two perfect games in a double-header against Booker T. Washington (1-14, 0-11).

“They’re all special, all bring back memories. We had some former players come back tonight and that’s always special to me when I get to see my kids that have graduated come back.”

Sand Springs (15-8, 6-4) celebrated four seniors between games: Kelsi Hilton, Morgan Rector, Gracey Massey, and Natalia Delgado.

Before the ceremony, Addison Hughes (9-4) pitched her second perfect game of the season, tossing nine strikeouts in the 16-0 five-inning run-rule win.

After the ceremony, Hilton (4-2) threw 11 strikeouts in a 15-0 five-inning perfect game.

Morgan Rector was the hot hand at the plate, going 4-for-4 in the first game with one run and five RBIs. Kenzie King was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

In the second game Hilton was 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs while Massey was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

As a team, the Sandites went 19-of-31 at the plate in game one and 7-of-15 with 18 walks in the nightcap.

Of Washington’s 30 at-bats on the night: 20 were retired at the plate, nine were put out in the infield, and the outfield only had to make one play on the whole night.

“We’ve been working with this group because we’re so young,” said Brown. “We’ve been doing a lot of teaching. This group - I feel like they’re kind of like sponges. Everything we tell them and talk to them about, they really absorb it, take it in, and try to do it out here.”

“Seeing a lot of positive things, and for them to come out here and stay focused, sometimes that’s hard to do.”

The games pushed the Sandites’ win streak to six as they enter the final two weeks of the regular season. The winning momentum is a nice change of pace after a tough 1-6 run in the middle of the season.

“What I tried to do is get a good mix of teams that we can compete with, and play a lot of the good teams,” said Brown.

“Whether we win or lose, they’re going to make you better down the road. And I think this group realizes that.”

The Sandites have been battled tested against the likes of Edmond Deer Creek (18-4), Southmoore (16-9), Owasso (23-0), Edmond Memorial (17-8), Moore (24-3), and Broken Arrow (23-3) - all of which are likely to be in the State Tournament this October.

Through many of their toughest games they were without Hilton in the circle due to a throwing arm injury that appears to be mostly behind her.

“It feels good to get Kelsi back,” laughed Brown. “She’s been a great player for us all four years she’s been a varsity player. She carries that well and she’s a great leader for the team.”

The girls will wrap up district action with another home double-header on Monday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Yukon for Youth Night. Students who come in their softball jerseys or summer camp shirts will get free admission to that game and will get to join the team on the field during the national anthem.

“Yukon is going to be tough,” said Brown. “They have a great program. So Monday, even though it’s a double-header, we just take it one game at a time.”

Shelli Brown Earns 650th Career Win as Sandites Defeat Glenpool 4-1

The Charles Page High School softball team (9-8) snapped a five-game losing streak with a milestone win Friday morning at the Bixby Tournament, dealing Glenpool (10-10) a 4-1 loss for head coach Shelli Brown’s 650th win with the Sandites.

Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, freshman Lakelyn Harger hit a two-run go-ahead double to center field before scoring on a single from Kaylei Rake.

Kenzie King added an insurance run in the fourth to get the Sandites back in the win column for the first time in three weeks.

Addison Hughes (6-4) got the win in the circle, tossing nine strikeouts with only four hits and no walks.

In the second game of the tournament the girls were upset 3-1 by Haskell (16-7) in a five-inning battle.

Both teams left two stranded in the first inning but Haskell got hot in the third to take a 3-0 lead on a walk, two singles, and a double.

Sand Springs stranded two more on a pair of walks in the bottom of the third and both teams stranded a single in the fourth.

The Haymakers hit two doubles in the fifth but were unable to pad their lead. Bella Wilson hit a one-out solo homer to try and spark a Sandite rally but after a single from Morgan Rector the Haymakers put the game away on a pair of fielder’s choices.

Kelsi Hilton (1-2) got the loss, pitching five hits, two walks, and three strikeouts in three innings. Kylie King (2-2) tossed three hits, no walks, and two strikeouts in relief.

Sand Springs will return to tournament play Saturday at 11:40 a.m. against Muskogee (10-11) and will play Coweta (11-9) at 1:20 p.m. at Bentley Park.

On Thursday evening the Sandites fell 9-1 to Broken Arrow (19-2) in a key district battle.

Hughes recorded the loss in that game, surrendering only two hits, no earned runs, and three walks with five strikeouts in 2.2 innings as the starter and the closer.

Hilton returned to the pitcher’s circle in the third inning for the first time in three weeks after nursing an arm injury. She tossed seven hits, three walks, and one strikeout in three innings.

Kylie King tossed two hits in the seventh inning before Hughes returned to the circle to close out the game.

Rake was 2-of-3 as the lead hitter for the Sandites while Rector scored the lone run on a single from Hilton in the fourth inning to avert the shutout.

Sand Springs kicked off the week with a brief trip to Putnam City North (6-11, 2-5) on Tuesday that was supposed to be a double-header.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead before the game was postponed in the top of the second due to inclement weather. Those games will be made up on Monday.
