CPHS Volleyball: Sand Springs beats No. 16 Ponca City 3-1 on Senior Night

The Charles Page High School volleyball team celebrated seven seniors Thursday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House before playing their final home match of the season. The Class 6A No. 12 ranked Sandites (17-13) rolled to a 3-1 non-conference win over No. 16 Ponca City (12-13).

The Sandites played with their winning formula, starting an all senior lineup in game one, and the changes hindered their flow. The Wildcats jumped out to an early advantage with five straight rallies before Raylynn Mong put the home team on the board. Ponca took an 8-1 lead with three blocks, two kills, and an ace from Hannah Gibson. Devree Youngblood notched a kill after a Sandite timeout and the two teams traded blows for a while, but Ponca soon began to run away with it, taking their biggest lead of the set at 18-7. The home team rallied late in the game, cutting it to 24-17, but a Sandite service error gave Ponca the game.
Ponca committed only four errors in the first set, but committed four in game two before they ever scored a point. Madison Burris won the opening rally with a kill and Youngblood added one of her own in a 6-0 start before Naomi Gertken broke up the run. Things got competitive from there and Ponca cut it as close as 12-9 before Youngblood got hot with three kills in four rallies. Burris notched a kill to kick off a six point run shortly before the Sandites secured a 25-13 win.
Gibson served up an ace and an error to start the third set and Lindsay Hollis gave the Wildcats their last lead at 2-1 and it was the Sandite show from there on. The home team went on runs of three, five, and six for a 17-8 lead before the game devolved into a blow for blow exchange. Jacelyn Smith knocked down the game point at 25-15.
The final set was another dominant Sandite victory. The home team took an 8-2 lead with two four-point runs, and ended on a six-point run with three aces from Burris for the 25-11 win.
Youngblood notched her sixth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs. Mong led the team in assists with 14, and tied Youngblood with 15 digs. Burris scored 7 kills, 13 assists, 7 blocks, and 5 aces, and Campfield had 10 kills. Hollis led the Wildcats with 9 kills, followed by KaSanda Lyons with 7. Sabrina Green had a team-high four blocks.
The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at Bixby (5-22, 3-4) in their final match of the regular season. Ponca will travel to No. 1 Broken Arrow (26-2) next Thursday. Regional pairings are set to be released next Wednesday, with tournaments to be played Tuesday the 15th.
