CPHS Wrestling: Wiseley, Patton, Kirby take gold at Broken Arrow tournament

Members of the Charles Page High School wrestling team competed at the Joe Zamora/Skyler Holman Open in Broken Arrow this past weekend. The Sandites sent four to the finals and crowned three champions in the pre-season folkstyle tournament.

Junior Brendan Wiseley won the 113-pound bracket with a pin of John Goodyear in 3:58, an 8-4 decision over Teyton Burns, a 12-0 major decision against Tyler Fullen, and a 2-0 decision over Broken Arrow’s Bryce Cockrell.

Senior Scott Patton won the 152-pound bracket, pinning Dustin Macy in 0:49 and Garrett Hill in 1:09. He majored Simon Young 16-5 and edged out Durant State Qualifier Connor Hall 6-4 in the finals.

Junior Chris Kirby took first prize at 160 pounds, pinning Jakoby Banks in 1:03, Brett Thompson in 2:41, and Dylan Wilson in 0:59.

Senior Dayvon Taylor placed third at 182. He lost his opening match 3-0 to Cushing State Runner-Up Gage Hockett, but pinned Adam Klein in 2:16 and Durant State Qualifier Fulton Gorges in 2:33. He also scored a 15-0 technical fall against Kayden Brady.

Freshman Christian Forbes failed to place at 106 but finished with a winning 3-2 record, including a 20-4 tech fall against Harley Newberry, a 5-3 decision over Suan Sang, and a 15-1 major decision against Joshua Pasillas. He was pinned by State Champion Eli Griffin of Cascia Hall and eliminated 5-0 by Cushing State Qualifier Luke Ahrberg.

Junior High

Cameron White placed third at 106 pounds. He pinned Justin Aldridge in 0:17 and scored major decisions of 12-3 and 8-0 against Colton Luker and Andrew Lollis. His only loss was 2-1 to Cushing’s Kaiser Simson.

Nichlas Huelsenbeck finished fourth at 126 pounds He lost his opening match to Broken Arrow’s Elijah Hynes but won out with a 15-3 tech fall over Madux Palmer, an 18-3 tech fall against Caden Erskine, a 5-0 decision over Josh Rexwinkle, and a pin of Noah Perry in 1:53 before forfeiting the consolation rematch with Hynes.

Blake Jones came in runner-up at 132 pounds, pinning Kevin Lund in 0:49 and Sawyer Richardson in 2:00 before falling 13-8 to Sallisaw’s Kiowa Coffman.

Wrestling: Sandite Elementary crowns 9 champions at Cleveland Novice Tournament

The Sand Springs Team Big elementary wrestling program competed at the Cleveland Novice Tournament this past weekend and nine Sandites brought home gold medals.

Beginner 4

Aiden Wilkerson won the 100-pound bracket with pins of 1:18 and 1:27.

Kiefer Sullivan placed first at 140 pounds.

Scarlett Spears Ulrich placed second at 84 pounds.

Beginner 3

Andrew Price won the 64 pound bracket with falls in 2:01, 1:21, and 0:24.

Kiefer Sullivan won heavyweight, pinning Jase Robinson in 0:33 and 0:36.

Beginner 2

Cooper Ellenburg came in runner-up at 58 pounds with three falls in under a minute each, but was defeated 10-8 by Landon Bozone in sudden victory overtime. Jordan Satoe placed third with a first-period fall and a 9-2 decision over Conner Biggerstaff.

Isabella Perea placed fourth at 64 pounds.

Aiden Rhine won the 90-pound bracket with three falls, all in 48 seconds or less. Beau Bruner placed fourth, defeating Crew Kaser 14-7.

Beginner 1

Karson Waag won the 37-pound bracket with four falls, all in 39 seconds or less. Kiryn Proctor placed fourth with an 11-7 decision over Gage Stephenson.

Wes Wilson won the 43-pound bracket with a 12-0 major decision, a 36-second pin, and an 8-1 decision over Colton Durant.

C. Zayden Anderson placed first at 46 pounds, pinning his three foes in 0:33, 0:29, and 1:31.

Ryder Black took first at 49 pounds with three pins in under a minute apiece and a 16-3 major decision over Gunner Cupit.

CPHS Softball: Elizabeth Luttrell signs with Cowley County College

Charles Page High School senior Elizabeth Luttrell signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play softball for Cowley County Community College.

Luttrell was a three-year starting first baseman for the Lady Sandites and finished her career with a .356 batting average, .548 slugging average, .426 on-base percentage, 78 hits, 62 runs, 72 RBI, and nine home runs. She was given an All-District Honorable Mention for the 2018 season.

Cowley College is located in Arkansas City, Kansas and competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II. The Tigers went 42-16 last season under third-year Head Coach Jenny Hoyt.

The Lady Sandites won four-straight Regional Championships during Luttrell’s career, as well as the 2018 Bixby Tournament title and 6A Academic State Titles in 2016 and 2018. They made four State Tournament appearances and one State finals appearance in 2015.

CPHS Baseball: Tyler Ash & John Miller sign with Eastern Oklahoma State College

Charles Page High School seniors Tyler Ash and John Miller signed letters of intent Wednesday morning to play baseball for Eastern Oklahoma State College.

Ash is entering his third year on the varsity team and played Center Field and Pitcher as a junior. In his career he has amassed a .268 batting average, .375 slugging average, and .410 on-base percentage with 30 hits, 30 runs, 26 RBI, 2 home runs, and 19 stolen bases. On the mound he holds with a 3-2 record, 3.77 earned run average and 1.46 WHIP with 24 strikeouts in 26 innings.

Miller played his first year of varsity baseball last year and earned an impressive 5-1 record on the mound with a 2.13 ERA, 1.1 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. He saw limited action as a batter, hitting .385 with a .462 slugging average, .467 OBP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 4 RBI, and 1 stolen base.

EOSC is a public community college in Wilburton, Oklahoma competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region II. The Mountaineers went 44-17 last season but will be under new leadership going forward with first-year Head Coach and Athletic Director Matt Parker. Parker was named the 2018 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after taking Oklahoma Wesleyan to a 53-8 record last season.

Ash and Miller will begin their senior season February 11th with a home scrimmage against Booker T. Washington. The Sandites are coming off a 24-12 finish under first-year Head Coach James Garrison. After a 4-6 start to the season they won fourteen games in a row and earned the first place trophy at the Spartan/Tiger Turf War. They went 2-2 at the Regional Championship and were eliminated by State Semifinalist Owasso.

CPHS Baseball: Cale Savage signs with Northern Oklahoma College

Charles Page High School senior Cale Savage signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play baseball for Northern Oklahoma College at Enid.

Savage plays First and Third base and pitches for the Sandites and is entering his third year on the varsity team. He holds a .317 batting average, .433 slugging average, and .433 on-base percentage with 52 hits, 27 runs, 41 RBI, 1 home run, and 15 steals. He mostly pitches in relief and holds a 1-1 record with a 3.1 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in 15.2 innings. He was given an All-State Honorable Mention in 2017.

Northern Oklahoma College is based out of Tonkawa with satellite campuses in Enid and Stillwater. The Enid school has its own athletics program established in 2001 competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region Two. The Jets have won three Conference Championships, four Regionals Championships, three District Championships, and placed third at the NJCAA World Series in 2002 and 2018. They went 48-16 last season under Head Coach Raydon Leaton, who has led the team since its inception.

CPHS Baseball: Cal Watkins signs with Seminole State College

Charles Page High School senior Cal Watkins signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play baseball for Seminole State College.

Watkins is a third-year Shortstop for the varsity team. As a junior he batted .339 with a .393 slugging average, .419 on-base percentage, 38 hits, 32 runs, 15 RBI, and 17 steals. He was named to the Academic All-Frontier Valley Conference team last season.

Seminole went 41-12 last year and will be led by first-year Head Coach Mack Chambers in the coming season. The Trojans have won 37 Region 2 Titles and 15 South Central District Titles.
