CPHS Baseball: Braden Askew signs with Connors State College

Charles Page High School senior Braden Askew signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to play collegiate baseball for Connors State College. 

Connors State College is located in Warner, Oklahoma. The Cowboys compete in the National Junior College Athletics Association Division One and are currently 37-7 overall and 15-6 in conference play. 

Askew holds the second-highest batting average on his team at .383, the second-highest slugging percentage at .481, and the third-highest on-base percentage at .429. He leads the team in hits and runs batted in.

As a pitcher Askew is 3-3 in his senior campaign with a 3.43 earned run average and 1.38 WHIP. He throws 66% strikes and leads his team in strikeouts with 30. He holds a career record of 6-5. 

CPHS Track: Ian Baustert signs with Colby Community College

Charles Page High School senior Ian Baustert signed a letter of intent Wednesday morning to run collegiate Track and Cross Country at Colby Community College.

CCC is located in Colby, Kansas and competes in the National Junior College Athletics Association Division One and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. 

Baustert is primarily a distance runner with personal records of 2:11.19 in the 800 meter run, 4:23.79 in the 1500, 4:43.46 in the 1600, and 9:48.35 in the 3000. He placed first at the 2017 USATF Oklahoma Association Championship 1500 and second in the 3000. 

In Cross Country Baustert was part of the first team in Sand Springs history to quality for the State Championship. He alternated between second and third on the team and finished his high school career with personal records of 10:21 in the two-mile run and 17:19.97 in the 5K.

CPHS Softball: Lady Sandites fall 9-3 to Tahlequah

Sand Springs Softball had a rough time at Union High School Tuesday night, dropping games to both the Union Redskins and the Tahlequah Lady Tigers. 

The Class 6A No. 17 ranked Charles Page High School slow pitch softball team (6-10) fell 13-3 to No. 2 Union in game one and 9-3 to No. 11 Tahlequah (16-11) in game two.

Rogers State University-committed junior Kimi Presnell hit a lead-off triple to start the game and scored on a single from Sabrina Usher on the next play. That would be the only lead of the night for the Sandites.

Hailey Sams hit a home run in the bottom of the first to score Alexa Cacy and Emily Sampson for a 3-1 lead. An error and three walks gave the Tigers loaded bases and a free run in the second inning, then Sams hit a grand slam to make it 8-1.

Kinsey Skaggs singled and scored on a triple from Madison Lee, then Lee scored on a fly ball by Drew Hawkins in the top of the third. Betty Danner scored the last run of the game in the bottom of the third, and the game went scoreless for the next four innings. 

The Lady Sandites will return to action Thursday in Jenks with a 4:00 p.m. game against No. 6 Broken Arrow (10-6) and a 7:30 bout with the No. 10 Trojans (17-9) at 7:30 p.m.

CPHS Soccer: Owasso sweeps Sand Springs, Luke Jeffus scores lone goal

The Charles Page High School varsity soccer teams suffered defeat Tuesday night at the hands of the Owasso Rams.

The Lady Sandites fell 9-0 and the boys went down 2-1 in a pair of district matches at their home field in Memorial Stadium. 

The Owasso girls (7-4, 3-2) took a 3-0 first half lead on Sand Springs (7-5, 1-4) with goals from Morgan Krispense, Gracie Pate, and a free kick from Faith Lewis that barely sneaked past the outstretched arms of Sandite goalkeeper Allison Day. 

Shelby Gibbs, Kassidy Collins, Baylee Kosciolek, Reagan Krueger, Sasha Pedersen, and Hope Kasterke each notched goals in the second half against the Lady Sandites.

The boys' game was far closer and both teams entered the second half scoreless.

Sandite goalie Ethan Tippit notched a beautiful save on a penalty kick in the first few minutes and was crucial throughout the game. 

Sand Springs (4-8, 0-5) took the lead in the 57th minute with a goal from sophomore standout Luke Jeffus, but Kolby Bauer responded with a brace, scoring at 67:42 and 76:10 for the victory. Owasso improves to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in district action.

Sand Springs Soccer will return to action Thursday with a pair of district matches at Norman High School. Owasso will host Sapulpa on Friday. Girls' games begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by boys at 8:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Sabrina Usher hits home run in 13-3 loss at Union

The Class 6A No. 17 ranked Charles Page High School Slow Pitch Softball Team (6-9) suffered a 13-3 run-rule loss Tuesday afternoon at No. 2 Union High School (17-3).

Sabrina Usher kicked things off with a solo home run in the top of the second. The Sandites gave up a single and a double but Kimi Presnell caught a pop fly to strand two.

Union buried the Sandites in the bottom of the third with nine hits, two walks, and an error for a 9-1 lead.

Madelyn Blair doubled in the fourth and the Redskins walked two before Taber batted in Blair. Jensen Arnold scored on a pop fly from Makenna Skaggs but the inning came to a close soon after.

Union reloaded in the bottom of the fourth but the Sandites got off easy, giving up one run on a fielder's choice before Madelyn Blair caught a line drive and picked off a runner at first. Two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth pushed it to 13-3 and the Redskins secured their fifth-straight win. 

Sandite of the Week: Tyler Ash leads Sandites on the plate and the mound

Tyler Ash was selected as our Sandite of the Week after helping the Sand Springs Baseball team extend their winning streak to fourteen at the Spartan/Tiger Turf War this past weekend.

The Sandites had a busy week, playing two district games and going 4-0 at the Bixby-Broken Arrow tournament for an 18-6, 4-2 record. 

Ash was five-of-nineteen at the plate over the six games, hitting two singles, one double, and two home runs. His homers came against Jenks and Bixby. Ash led his team offensively with six runs and six RBI. He also stole three bases over the course of the tournament.

In the Tournament finals the Sandites topped Booker T. Washington 11-3 and Ash went the distance on the mound, pitching three hits, five strikeouts, and no walks in five innings with zero earned runs. 

Overall this season Ash holds a .284 batting average, .432 slugging average, .418 on-base percentage, 4.27 earned run average, and a 2-1 record on the mound.

Sand Springs will take on Jenks (12-12, 4-2) in district action Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sandite Baseball Complex. The Sandites haven't lost a game since March 19th at the Best of the West Tournament in Peoria, Arizona.
