CPHS Softball: Sabrina Usher hits home run in 13-3 loss at Union

The Class 6A No. 17 ranked Charles Page High School Slow Pitch Softball Team (6-9) suffered a 13-3 run-rule loss Tuesday afternoon at No. 2 Union High School (17-3).

Sabrina Usher kicked things off with a solo home run in the top of the second. The Sandites gave up a single and a double but Kimi Presnell caught a pop fly to strand two.

Union buried the Sandites in the bottom of the third with nine hits, two walks, and an error for a 9-1 lead.

Madelyn Blair doubled in the fourth and the Redskins walked two before Taber batted in Blair. Jensen Arnold scored on a pop fly from Makenna Skaggs but the inning came to a close soon after.

Union reloaded in the bottom of the fourth but the Sandites got off easy, giving up one run on a fielder's choice before Madelyn Blair caught a line drive and picked off a runner at first. Two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth pushed it to 13-3 and the Redskins secured their fifth-straight win. 

Sandite of the Week: Tyler Ash leads Sandites on the plate and the mound

Tyler Ash was selected as our Sandite of the Week after helping the Sand Springs Baseball team extend their winning streak to fourteen at the Spartan/Tiger Turf War this past weekend.

The Sandites had a busy week, playing two district games and going 4-0 at the Bixby-Broken Arrow tournament for an 18-6, 4-2 record. 

Ash was five-of-nineteen at the plate over the six games, hitting two singles, one double, and two home runs. His homers came against Jenks and Bixby. Ash led his team offensively with six runs and six RBI. He also stole three bases over the course of the tournament.

In the Tournament finals the Sandites topped Booker T. Washington 11-3 and Ash went the distance on the mound, pitching three hits, five strikeouts, and no walks in five innings with zero earned runs. 

Overall this season Ash holds a .284 batting average, .432 slugging average, .418 on-base percentage, 4.27 earned run average, and a 2-1 record on the mound.

Sand Springs will take on Jenks (12-12, 4-2) in district action Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sandite Baseball Complex. The Sandites haven't lost a game since March 19th at the Best of the West Tournament in Peoria, Arizona. 

CPHS Baseball: Sandites win 14th-straight for Tournament Championship

Ty Steelman was two-for-two at the plate against Booker T. Washington and scored three runs.

The Sand Springs juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down and the Charles Page High School baseball team secured their fourteenth-straight victory in the Championship round of the Spartan/Tiger Turf War. 

The Sandites (18-6) easily handed Booker T. Washington (11-13) an 11-3 loss with a dominant performance at the plate and on the mound.

Riley Rutledge scored Tyler Ash on a double and came in on a ground ball by Kyler Copeland for a 2-0 first inning lead. Wes Omalley scored on an error to get the Hornets on the board in the second inning, but Ash responded by doubling in Kameron Adcock and Ty Steelman.

A pair of errors in the top of the third helped the Hornets cut it to a one-run deficit, but Sand Springs exploded in the bottom of the inning for a 10-3 advantage. 

Kameron Adcock hit a sacrifice fly to score Cale Savage, then Copeland, Lucas Adcock, and Ty Steelman loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Cal Watkins singled to bring in Malachi Burks and Lucas Adcock, then Rutledge was hit by pitch to reload. Steelman scored on an error, then Braden Askew hit a double to score Watkins and Rutledge. 

Watkins was next up with a double in the fourth inning to bring in Steelman for the final run of the game. 

Ash (2-1) got the win on the mound, pitching three hits, five strikeouts, no walks, and no earned runs in five innings. 

Sand Springs Baseball will return to action Monday at 6:00 p.m. when they host Jenks (12-12, 4-2). The two teams are tied for third place in district action. Sand Springs previously defeated the Trojans 5-1 on Saturday.

CPHS Track: Sandites make strong showing at Yukon Classic

The Charles Page High School track and field teams competed at the Yukon Classic this weekend and several Sandites set impressive personal records. 

Defending State Champion Aden Baughman placed second in the 800-meter run in 1:56.83, coming in a twentieth of a second behind Ansel Pendley-Griffin. 

Joel Mackey finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a personal record 10.86 seconds. Payton Scott and Joseph Mattison also set personal bests in the event.

Mackey also placed fifth in the 200-dash with a PR of 21.62 and Mattison set a PR of 23.42.

The boys' relay teams fared well. The 400 meter relay team finished in ninth place in 43.59 seconds, just a fifth of a second behind their prior competition's team-best. The 3200 relay team placed sixth out of 21 teams.

Mason Shipman placed 21st in the 110 meter hurdles with a personal record of 16.64 seconds and Alex Newport had a PR of 19.66 for 39th place. 

Tiqvah Soap cracked the top fifteen in the 400-meter dash with a personal-record 1:04.66. 

The boys placed seventeenth out of 33 teams but failed to crown a champion for the first time this season. The girls' team tied for 27th.

CPHS Soccer: Union thumps Sand Springs, Weiser scores lone goal

Sophomore Jaden Weiser scored the lone goal for the Sandites in an 8-1 Friday night loss at Union. 

It was a nearly perfect night for Union High School, not so much for Sand Springs.

The three-straight defending Girls' Soccer State Champions (10-2, 4-1) dealt the Sandites a 10-0 mercy rule shutout on the Redskin Senior Night. The nationally-ranked No. 3 Union boys (12-0, 5-0) continued their streak as the only undefeated team in 6A with an 8-1 victory.

It was an easy night for the Union girls' goalkeeper as Sand Springs didn’t take a single shot and only crossed into the Redskin box a couple of times.

University of Nevada, Reno-commit Payton Lieb scored at 2:25 and University of Arkansas-commit Kyler Goins scored at 11:31 for an early lead and the Lady Sandites never recovered.

The Sandite goalie blocked a shot from Lieb at 31:00, but Holli Meyer put it back less than a minute later for a 3-0 lead at the half.

Alison Day took over at goalie in the second half but things didn’t improve. Mahayla Benedict scored just 23 seconds into the second half and Lieb notched a brace at 41:27.

Day made a pair of great saves in the middle of a Redskin onslaught that sent half a dozen close shots within a foot of the net.

University of Central Arkansas-commit Morgan Hurd got in the scorebook at 50:40, Carsen Bartmess joined her at 52:05, University of Guelph-commit Haileigh Lochhead at 69:17, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M-commit Megan Knox at 76:30, and Northeastern Oklahoma A&M-commit Molly Knox at 77:34 to end the game by mercy rule.

Ruben Torres kicked off the boys' game with a goal at 5:15, followed by Alejandro Martinez at 11:15. Rogelio Jurado scored with an assist from Torres at 25:35 and Adolfo Bustos made it 4-0 with thirteen seconds left in the half. 

Torres made a brace just fourteen seconds into the second half, but Sand Springs responded and Jaden Weiser averted the shutout at 47:11. Brennan Tate got in on the action at 50:10, Jonathan Solorzano at 65:19, and Rylan Franca at 67:04.

The Lady Sandites fall to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in district action, while the boys are 4-7, 0-4. Sand Springs Soccer will host Owasso Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Rams are 5-3, 1-2 and the boys are 6-3, 1-2. 

CPHS Baseball: Sandites win 13 straight, Ash hits home run against Bixby

Tyler Ash hit two home runs Friday night in back-to-back games. 

In one of their biggest tests of the season, the Charles Page High School varsity baseball team (17-6) prevailed 7-4 over the Bixby Spartans (15-8) Friday night at the Spartan/Tiger Turf War. The Friday the 13th victory was their thirteenth win in a row.

Sand Springs was first on the board as Lucas Adcock scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning, but the Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the inning. 

Alex Bighorse scored on a wild pitch and Gage Conger singled to score Blake Williams for the 2-1 advantage, then Jaxson Crull scored on an error in the third inning.

The Sandites came from behind in the top of the fifth with four hits, two walks, and an error. Ty Steelman tripled to score Kameron Adcock, Tyler Ash singled to score Steelman, and Braden Askew doubled to score Ash. Riley Rutledge scored on the error for the 5-3 advantage.

Tucker Pawley scored on a single from Sam Hink in the bottom of the fifth, but that would be the last run of the night for the Spartans.

Ash, who hit his first varsity home run against Jenks just a few hours prior, repeated the feat to score Kameron Adcock in the top of the sixth and led the Sandites offensively with two hits, two runs, and three RBI.

Bixby went down swinging, hitting a pair of singles and loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Ty Steelman pitched two strikeouts and Ash caught a fly ball in center field to bring the game to a close. 

It was a joint effort on the mound as Cale Savage (0-0, 1-1), John Miller (4-0), and Steelman (2-0, 2-1) each saw pitching action. Miller got the win, throwing two hits, three walks, and three strikeouts in three innings. Savage pitched two hits and three walks in two innings, and Steelman picked up his third save of the season with two hits and three strikeouts in two innings. 

Sand Springs Baseball will return to action in the championship round against Booker T. Washington (11-12) Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Broken Arrow High School. The Sandites previously defeated the Hornets 9-6 at the Tiger/Zebra Tournament in March.
