Sand Springs's Daton Fix wins World Championship in Tampere, Finland

Charles Page High School Class of 2017 graduate and Oklahoma State University freshman Daton Fix (30-0) traveled to Tampere, Finland this week for the United World Wrestling Junior World Freestyle Championship. The four-time undefeated High School State Champion breezed through the competition to attain his longtime goal of winning a World Championship.

Fix has previously competed in three World Championships. Last summer he took Bronze at Junior Worlds in Macone, France, and in 2015 he took Bronze at Cadet Worlds in Sarajevo, Bosnia. In 2014 he placed tenth in Snina, Slovakia. He also won Silver at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

The Sandite sailed through the tournament with unreal ease, outscoring his opponents by a combined score of 53-1, not giving up a single point till the finals.

Building up to the finals, Fix defeated Mediterranean Champion Salah Eddi Kateb of Algeria, defending World Champion Afgan Khashalov of Azerbaijan, fellow World Bronze medalist Gulomjon Abdullaev of Uzbekistan, and Asian Bronze Medalist Nader Amir Nasrisamakoush of Iran all without giving up a single point. In the finals he topped Youth Olympic Gold Medalist Ismail Gadzhiev 12-1 to seal the deal.

Fix was joined in the winner's circle by Mark Hall of Penn State and Gable Steveson of the University of Minnesota. Zahid Valencia, Ryan Deakin, and Mitchell McKee came in runner-up and together the six finalists secured the team title for the United States by a one-point margin over Russia.

SOTW: Aden Baughman wins National Championship in 800 meter run

Charles Page High School junior Aden Baughman was selected as Sandite of the Week for his first place finish at last weekend's USA Track and Field National Championship. The event was held in Rock Chalk Park at the University of Kansas.

Baughman competed in the 15-16 year-old division of the 800 meter run and took first place in both the preliminaries and finals. In the prelims he finished in 1:56.1, less than half a second ahead of the runner-up. On Saturday he repeated his win with a 1:56.72 performance, edging the runner-up by half a second.

The Sandite won all but one of his 800-meter races this past school year, and the National Championship marked his eight-straight victory in the distance.

On Thursday afternoon Baughman placed thirteenth out of 45 runners in the 1500 meter preliminaries, falling just one place short of qualifying for the finals. His 4:15.71 time was 5.58 seconds behind the first-place runner, and 0.82 seconds away from qualifying.

Baughman trains with Revolution Running & Fitness, an all-ages club led by CPHS Cross Country Head Coach Chris Corbin. The Competitive Club practice is held Wednesdays at the high school track, while the Strength and Conditioning Class is held Tuesdays and Thursdays at Angus Valley Elementary School.

Sandite of the Week can be anyone with significant ties to the Sand Springs community who is making a positive impact in Sand Springs or the world.

Sapulpa tops Sand Springs 10-6 in Alumni Rivalry Game; Thayer scores lone touchdown

For the past 87 years, Sapulpa and Sand Springs students have met in one of the most bitter football rivalries in Oklahoma. And for the past four years, alumni from the two schools have duked it out on the gridiron in a fundraiser for the students.

Sapulpa leads the high school series 45-41-5, and tied the alumni series 2-2 Sunday night. The two teams split the ticket sales, with the host team keeping concessions.

The first alumni game was held at George F. Collins Stadium in 2014 and was a resounding 20-7 Sapulpa victory, but for the past two seasons the Sandites have both hosted and won the game.

Sand Springs won 35-0 in 2015 and 20-14 last year while Collins Stadium was undergoing renovation. In 2016, Cody Hilderbrant, Cody Hale, Znick Ferrell, and Davey Thayer got in on the scoring action for Sand Springs, while J.R. Romine and Jason Broom found the endzone for the Chieftains.

This year, the dynamic Sapulpa duo returned to wreak havoc on the small Sandite team. Romine completed only four passes, but totaled 74 yards. Meanwhile, the Sandites went through four QBs and failed to establish an offensive rhythm.

The first quarter went scoreless for both teams, but the Sandites hit paydirt early in the second with a 62-yard march, capped by a half-yard scoring run from the Class of 2015's Davey Thayer. A two-point conversion attempt fell incomplete, however, and Sapulpa took the lead shortly before halftime after Michael Cashon scored on a six-yard run and Romine drilled the point-after.

The first half ended with a flair of excitement as Taylor Lewis and Cruz Desjarlais picked off back-to-back interceptions. Lewis snagged another later in the game.

The third quarter was plagued by fumbled hikes on the part of the Sandites, and Sapulpa got the ball back on the second play of the half. On their first possession they marched 19 yards in five plays before Romine connected on a 35-yard field goal for the final score of the game.

Five possession changes later, and neither team had found the endzone again. The Sandites put together an impressive, but ultimately unsuccessful, last-ditch effort in the final three minutes - picking up three first downs before running out of time in Sapulpa territory.

Sapulpa Head Coach Robert Borgstadt previously spent five years as defensive coordinator in Sand Springs, while Wide-Receivers Coach Tim Beacham spent two years as Head Coach at Charles Page from 2001-2002. This marked Borgstadt's first victory against his old team, a feat he will aim to repeat for Sapulpa Homecoming on September 22nd.

Carter Young wins Cadet Greco-Roman National Championship

Incoming Sand Springs freshman Carter Young (27-1) was already named our Sandite of the Week for his National Runner-Up finish in Freestyle wrestling this past weekend. On Friday he padded his resume with a first-place finish in Greco-Roman.

The USA Wrestling Cadet National Championships are held annually in Fargo, North Dakota, and are one of the biggest events of the year in the wrestling community. Two styles of wrestling are held in Fargo. Freestyle is the most widely-practiced form of wrestling in the world, while Greco-Roman limits wrestlers to above-the-waist wrestling only. No tripping or holding below the waist requires a radically different skill set.

Young came into the event as the defending National Champion in freestyle. He lost his claim to the freestyle title after a 10-4 loss to Jett Strickenberger in the finals, but improved on his prior year's third-place finish in Greco.

The young Sandite won his first match 11-0 in only forty seconds with a tech fall against Dylan Driver. Next to fall was Devin Thomas by 5-1 decision, then Jack Ryan went down 10-0 in 1:08.

Young topped Idaho three-style State Champion Kase Mauger 6-3 in the semifinals, then won the first-place bout 10-0 over Danny Curran.

Jack Karstetter places 8th at Junior Freestyle National Championship

Two Sand Springs wrestlers competed this past week at the USA Wrestling Junior Freestyle National Championship in Fargo, North Dakota.

Class of 2017 graduate and State Champion Jack Karstetter (8-3) took eighth place in his last year of eligibility. Class of 2019 State Champion Riley Weir (17-4) amassed a winning record but was eliminated one round short of placement.

In his first match Karstetter teched Cole Rhone 15-4, then rolled to a 10-0 victory over Maryland State Champion Earl Blake in only forty seconds. Next to fall was two-time Minnesota State Champion Garrett Vos by 12-2 tech fall shortly before the second period.

Karstetter’s win streak came to a close with an 11-0 defeat by three-time Ohio State Champion and University of Michigan freshman Drew Mattin. In the Consolation bracket he scored a 20-11 victory over two-time Iowa State Runner-Up Brady Kyner before falling 14-9 to two-time Wisconsin State Runner-Up Aaron Schulist. He led Schulist on three separate occasions but was outscored 10-3 in the second period. In the placement round he fell 19-9 to Illinois State Champion Austin Macias.

Weir recently cracked the FloWrestling National Rankings, taking the No. 18 spot at 113 pounds. He got off to a good start in Fargo with three-straight technical falls.

Weir defeated Kody Kageler 10-0 in thirty seconds and Brandon Seidman 11-0 in only 42 seconds. Camden Russell was the first to score on the Sandite and the two went back-and-forth through the first period. Weir took the lead for the final time with six seconds in the first period, then tacked on six more points for the 20-10 tech fall in 3:23.

Weir met his match in No. 7 Iowa State Champion Aden Reeves who rolled to a 10-0 tech fall in 25 seconds, one round short of the quarterfinals. In the Consolation bracket Weir topped Nathan Cummings 20-13 before falling 12-0 to two-time Missouri State Champion and 2017 USAW Folkstyle National Champion Cody Phippen who went on to place third. Reeves ultimately placed fifth.

Team Oklahoma placed twelfth out of 45 participating states.
