Jack Karstetter places 8th at Junior Freestyle National Championship

Two Sand Springs wrestlers competed this past week at the USA Wrestling Junior Freestyle National Championship in Fargo, North Dakota.
Class of 2017 graduate and State Champion Jack Karstetter (8-3) took eighth place in his last year of eligibility. Class of 2019 State Champion Riley Weir (17-4) amassed a winning record but was eliminated one round short of placement.
In his first match Karstetter teched Cole Rhone 15-4, then rolled to a 10-0 victory over Maryland State Champion Earl Blake in only forty seconds. Next to fall was two-time Minnesota State Champion Garrett Vos by 12-2 tech fall shortly before the second period.
Karstetter’s win streak came to a close with an 11-0 defeat by three-time Ohio State Champion and University of Michigan freshman Drew Mattin. In the Consolation bracket he scored a 20-11 victory over two-time Iowa State Runner-Up Brady Kyner before falling 14-9 to two-time Wisconsin State Runner-Up Aaron Schulist. He led Schulist on three separate occasions but was outscored 10-3 in the second period. In the placement round he fell 19-9 to Illinois State Champion Austin Macias.
Weir recently cracked the FloWrestling National Rankings, taking the No. 18 spot at 113 pounds. He got off to a good start in Fargo with three-straight technical falls.
Weir defeated Kody Kageler 10-0 in thirty seconds and Brandon Seidman 11-0 in only 42 seconds. Camden Russell was the first to score on the Sandite and the two went back-and-forth through the first period. Weir took the lead for the final time with six seconds in the first period, then tacked on six more points for the 20-10 tech fall in 3:23.
Weir met his match in No. 7 Iowa State Champion Aden Reeves who rolled to a 10-0 tech fall in 25 seconds, one round short of the quarterfinals. In the Consolation bracket Weir topped Nathan Cummings 20-13 before falling 12-0 to two-time Missouri State Champion and 2017 USAW Folkstyle National Champion Cody Phippen who went on to place third. Reeves ultimately placed fifth.
Team Oklahoma placed twelfth out of 45 participating states.
