CPHS Baseball: Sandites go 5-1 in scrimmages, kick off season Friday
/The Charles Page High School varsity baseball team went 5-1 in preseason scrimmages this month, outscoring their opponents 52-22. They won their first five meetings before falling 7-6 to Collinsville in a Tuesday night walkoff.
They beat Booker T. Washington 10-0, Hilldale 5-0, Tulsa NOAH Homeschool 17-7, Bartlesville 7-3, and Jenks 7-5.
The Sandites came close to an undefeated preseason, coming back from a 5-1 deficit to a 6-5 seventh-inning advantage before allowing the Cardinals to walk off with the win, thanks to a pair of errors and a trio of walks.
The team batted .358 as a whole in the preseason, led by Kaegan Murray with a team-best .750. Murray recorded six hits on eight at-bats with five runs and two RBI. Malachi Burks batted .700 with seven hits on ten at-bats, scoring five runs and seven RBI.
Ethan Sartin had a team-high eight hits. Seth Villines and Keaton Campbell scored a team-best six runs apiece, and Cal Watkins led the team with eight RBI.
Eleven different Sandites spent time on the mound. The bullpen combined for a 1.75 earned run average, throwing 34 hits, 56 strikeouts and 24 walks in 40 innings.
Tyler Ash led the team in strikeouts per inning, throwing seven in three, with no hits and only one walk. Ben Banker saw the most action, throwing nine strikeouts, two hits, and four walks in seven innings. Jaxon Skaggs was next up with a team-high ten strikeouts, six hits, and only one walk in six innings.
The regular season will officially kick off Friday at 5:00 p.m. in a non-district home game against Coweta. They will then travel to Piedmont Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Sandites will play the same district teams as last year. They will also compete in the Tate Aggie Classic in Pensacola, Florida, the Tiger/Zebra Classic in Coweta and Claremore, and the Broken Arrow-Bixby Turf War.
Last season Sand Springs went 24-12 under first-year Head Coach James Garrison (38-31). They won both the Tiger/Zebra Classic and the Spartan/Tiger Turf War en rout to a fourteen-game mid-season win streak. They lost twelve varsity players to graduation, but are returning thirteen experienced athletes.
Five Sandite seniors have signed collegiate letters of intent already. Kyler Copeland signed with College of the Ozarks, Watkins signed with Seminole State College, Cale Savage signed with Northern Oklahoma College, and Ash and John Miller signed with Eastern Oklahoma State College.
