Men’s Basketball

2021 CPHS alum Marlo Fox is in his junior year at Rogers State University (2-2). He played two minutes in a season-opening 82-58 loss to Minot State but didn’t see action in the past three games. The Hillcats will return to action Saturday afternoon against Fort Hays State (5-1).

Football

Pittsburg State University backup quarterback Ty Pennington (2021) saw his season come to an end in a 24-21 loss to No. 2 Grand Valley State (11-1) in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The seventh-ranked Gorillas (11-2) took a 21-14 lead into the fourth quarter but gave up 10 unanswered points, including the go-ahead touchdown with 35 seconds remaining, to end their season.

Pennington ended his redshirt-freshman year 46-of-69 passing for 447 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception with another 359 yards and four touchdowns on 76 carries.

Cheer

Ashley Blake (2022) is in her sophomore year at Oklahoma Baptist University and Coleman Wright (2020) is in his senior season at Nichols College.

Softball

Drew Hawkins (2021) is gearing up for her junior season next spring at Northeastern State University. The starting outfielder had a flawless defensive record last season while batting .235 while the RiverHawks went 30-21.

Jordyn Pearson (2021) will look to pick up some additional playing time in her junior year at Missouri Baptist University after playing two games last season in a 35-18-1 Spartan campaign. Pearson holds a 3.82 ERA and .333 career batting average after two seasons.

Shooting Sports

Gunnar Casey (2021) and Sammy Naugle (2021) are in their junior season at Connors State College. Casey recently posted a top-20 finish at the Ft. Hayes tournament in double skeet.

Baseball

Kyler Copeland (2019) will kick off his junior year this spring at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. Copeland is in his second year with the Savage Storm after previous stints at College of the Ozarks and Dodge City Community College.

Kaden Young (2021) is expected to play at Randall University in Moore this spring after a two-year stint at Oklahoma Wesleyan.

2023 graduates Jabe Schlehuber and Dominic Ornelas will start their college careers at Northern Oklahoma College at Enid this spring.

2019 graduates Cale Savage and Cal Watkins will play their junior years together at Washburn University. Watkins played two years at Seminole State College while Savage played two years at NOC-Enid before the two reunited last season.

Meghan Charles Wraps Up Fall Season at OCU

Oklahoma City University junior Meghan Charles (Class of 2021) is enjoying the mid-season winter break after a successful fall campaign.

Charles shot a two-round score of 150 in the season-opening Swinging Eagle Invitational at Southwestern Christian to help her team win the tournament title.

She tied for 49th place at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational, shooting 238 over three rounds.

In the final tournament of the fall she scored a 245 for 22nd place at the Coqui Classic in Puerto Rico as the Stars finished second in the team standings.

OCU will return to action on February 26th at The Trailblazer in Las Vegas.

Sandite Volleyballers Continue as Teammates in College

Three former Sand Springs volleyball players are still teammates even after moving up to the college level.

Teyha Johnson (Class of 2022), Charley Fahland (2022), and Payton Robbins (2023) are all continuing their volleyball careers together at Friends University and recently wrapped up an 8-25 season.

Johnson played in 10 matches this season, recording 32 assists, 5 aces, and 9 digs.

Fahland appeared in 3 matches, recording 1 assist and 4 digs.

Robbins earned a starting role as a freshman and played in 17 matches, recording 120 kills, 1 assist, 17 digs, and 14 blocks.

In addition to their on-court success, they’re also having success in the classroom. Johnson and Fahland both earned the 2023 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete award for maintaining a 3.5 GPA. Robbins was ineligible because she’s still a true freshman.

Gloria Mutiri (2020) is in her first season with the USC Münster professional team in Germany. She also played pro ball in Puerto Rico last season after graduating from the University of Oregon.

USC Münster is 1-6 on the season and sitting eighth in the Bundesliga but will have a big opportunity for a win on December 2nd at VC Neuwied (0-7).

Four Former Sandites Kick Off College Wrestling Season

Charles Page High School’s four-time undefeated State Champion from the Class of 2017 is back in the lineup at Oklahoma State University.

Daton Fix is in his seventh year overall and final year of eligibility. The redshirt senior is a three-time NCAA runner-up and four-time All-American and is looking to close out his storied career atop the podium.

Fix pinned his first opponent of the season, No. 16 Kurt Phipps, in 5:31 in a 38-6 dual win against Bucknell.

Also in the lineup at OSU is Carter Young, who won a State title at Sand Springs as a freshman before transferring to Stillwater.

The Pokes will return to action on December 1st at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas.

Ethan White (2023) is in his freshman year at Reinhardt University. White is 1-4 thus far, competing in two open tournaments. The Eagles will return to action at the Lindsey Wilson Duals on December 9th.

Ethan Norton (2022) is in his sophomore season at University of the Ozarks where he recently took 8th place at the Maryville Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open. The Eagles will compete at the Drury University Open on December 2nd.

Sandites Wrap Up College Cross Country Season, Prepare for Indoor Track

2021 Charles Page High School alum Erika Baker is in her first year at Pittsburg State University after transferring from Oral Roberts.

The Gorillas just wrapped up their season with an 18th place performance at the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Baker competed in four events for the Gorillas this season, wrapping up her season at the Firestarter Classic on October 14th when she ran a personal record 5K time of 19:58.7 for ninth place.

The junior will return to action with the Track & Field team this winter.

Aden Baughman (2019) will kick off his junior indoor season at Pitt State on December 8th at the Boo Rogers Combined Events. He also transferred from Oral Roberts this year.

Layne Kirkendoll (2022) will leap into her sophomore season at South Dakota State on December 1st in the SDSU Holiday Open. She competed in seven meets for the Jackrabbits last indoor season with five top-five finishes in the high jump.

Sakauri Wilson Scores 26 as Sandites Defeat Edmond Memorial in Season Opener

A fast start and suffocating defense led the Lady Sandite hoopers to a statement 41-33 win over Edmond Memorial in Tuesday’s season opener at the Ed Dubie Field House.

“It was a hard one to start off with,” said head coach Josh Berry. “I think they just played great. We executed. We’ve got a lot to work, but you like to work on it with a win, so I’m just glad for that.”

Southwestern Oklahoma State-committed senior Sakauri Wilson piled on 26 points in an East vs. West matchup that heralded the new district era of Oklahoma prep hoops.

The OSSAA has shifted to district play for the first time in basketball, throwing conference rivalries out the window. The West side of the state has historically been seen as a more dominant region in basketball, but districts 3 and 4 will put that to the test this season.

The East side got its first big win as the Sandites took down one of last season’s State semifinalists.

Wilson scored 8 unanswered points to end the first quarter with a 15-8 advantage.

Avery Hjelmstad, a heavily recruited Division I prospect, gave her team its only lead at 8-7, but was held to only four points in the first half as the Sandites took a 25-12 lead into the locker room.

Wilson, meanwhile, tallied 19 first-half points, including three treys.

“She’s a special player,” said Berry. “She carried the load offensively, but I thought Yanni (Morris), Tayja (Butler), Tianna (Butler), and Kiaryn (Taylor) did some great jobs defensively.”

“To hold somebody like that to 12 points at halftime, as a team, I think that’s really where we won the game today is defensively.”

Wilson was the only Sandite with a field goal in the first half but Morris and Taylor found the backboard in the third quarter and the Sandites took a 39-22 advantage into the fourth.

Memorial tried to rally, scoring 11 in a row to cut it to 39-33 but Wilson ended the night with a pair of free throws to put the game away.

Sand Springs had the better shooters both in the field and at the charity stripe and won the turnover battle as well with 10 takeaways,

Notably, the Sandites got the win without two of their potential starters. Hope Bump, a junior transfer from Claremore whose dad joined the coaching staff this season, is still waiting for clearance from the OSSAA.

They were also missing Abigaile Martin, who saw substantial playing time last season but is out with a likely season-ending injury.

Janiyah Williams, a heavily recruited five-star prospect, was held to only 11 points to lead the Bulldogs while Hjelmstad only had 8.

The Lady Sandites will return to action Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a district road game against Owasso (1-0, 1-0) while Edmond Memorial will host Putnam City (1-0, 1-0) on Friday.
