Sandites End Season in Regional Finals, Fall 5-2 to Edmond Memorial

Kylie King drove in both Sandite runs with a double in the 5-2 loss.

Sand Springs matched up well against Edmond Memorial at the plate but third inning mistakes were the difference maker as the defending State Champions prevailed 5-2 to end the Sandites’ season Friday afternoon in the Regional tournament finals.

Memorial (26-9) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a home run from Beth Damon, but the Bulldogs did most of their damage in the third when two walks and two errors put the home team up 4-0.

Chenna Davidson scored her team’s fifth and final run on a sacrifice hit after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch.

Sand Springs averted the shutout in the sixth with a pair of singles from Lakelyn Harger and Ashlyn Clark and a two-run double from Kylie King.

Kelsi Hilton ended her high school career stranded at first base on a seventh-inning single.

King (2-3) got the loss in the circle, surrendering four hits, one earned run, and two walks in four innings. Addison Hughes (12-7) got the start and allowed three hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings.

Lilly Stephens got the start for the Bulldogs, throwing three hits, three walks, and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings but Keegan Baker got the win with four hits, no walks, and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.

Charles Page High School wrapped up the season with a 19-15 mark. The girls will graduate four players this season: Morgan Rector, Hilton, Gracey Massey, and Natalia Delgado. The senior class of 2024 went 87-53 during its career.

Rector and Hilton will have compelling resumes for potential All-State accolades and Hilton is committed to playing at Southern Nazarene University next season.

Edmond Memorial will join Southmoore (21-11), Moore (31-3), Broken Arrow (30-3), Owasso (33-1), Edmond Deer Creek (25-6), Mustang (23-6), and Choctaw (22-10) at the 6A State Tournament on October 12th in Oklahoma City’s USA Hall of Fame Stadium Complex.

Hughes & Hilton Pitch Perfect Games on Senior Night - Sandites Shut Out Hornets

There’s no telling how many hundreds of players Shelli Brown has coached in her 27 years at Charles Page High School, but she still got teary-eyed when she reflected on her current class Thursday evening on Senior Night.

“Senior Night is a tough one,” said Brown, after her team won two perfect games in a double-header against Booker T. Washington (1-14, 0-11).

“They’re all special, all bring back memories. We had some former players come back tonight and that’s always special to me when I get to see my kids that have graduated come back.”

Sand Springs (15-8, 6-4) celebrated four seniors between games: Kelsi Hilton, Morgan Rector, Gracey Massey, and Natalia Delgado.

Before the ceremony, Addison Hughes (9-4) pitched her second perfect game of the season, tossing nine strikeouts in the 16-0 five-inning run-rule win.

After the ceremony, Hilton (4-2) threw 11 strikeouts in a 15-0 five-inning perfect game.

Morgan Rector was the hot hand at the plate, going 4-for-4 in the first game with one run and five RBIs. Kenzie King was 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

In the second game Hilton was 2-for-2 with a run and two RBIs while Massey was 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs.

As a team, the Sandites went 19-of-31 at the plate in game one and 7-of-15 with 18 walks in the nightcap.

Of Washington’s 30 at-bats on the night: 20 were retired at the plate, nine were put out in the infield, and the outfield only had to make one play on the whole night.

“We’ve been working with this group because we’re so young,” said Brown. “We’ve been doing a lot of teaching. This group - I feel like they’re kind of like sponges. Everything we tell them and talk to them about, they really absorb it, take it in, and try to do it out here.”

“Seeing a lot of positive things, and for them to come out here and stay focused, sometimes that’s hard to do.”

The games pushed the Sandites’ win streak to six as they enter the final two weeks of the regular season. The winning momentum is a nice change of pace after a tough 1-6 run in the middle of the season.

“What I tried to do is get a good mix of teams that we can compete with, and play a lot of the good teams,” said Brown.

“Whether we win or lose, they’re going to make you better down the road. And I think this group realizes that.”

The Sandites have been battled tested against the likes of Edmond Deer Creek (18-4), Southmoore (16-9), Owasso (23-0), Edmond Memorial (17-8), Moore (24-3), and Broken Arrow (23-3) - all of which are likely to be in the State Tournament this October.

Through many of their toughest games they were without Hilton in the circle due to a throwing arm injury that appears to be mostly behind her.

“It feels good to get Kelsi back,” laughed Brown. “She’s been a great player for us all four years she’s been a varsity player. She carries that well and she’s a great leader for the team.”

The girls will wrap up district action with another home double-header on Monday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Yukon for Youth Night. Students who come in their softball jerseys or summer camp shirts will get free admission to that game and will get to join the team on the field during the national anthem.

“Yukon is going to be tough,” said Brown. “They have a great program. So Monday, even though it’s a double-header, we just take it one game at a time.”

Sandite Volleyball Falls 3-1 in Exciting Match Against Owasso

The difference between an average team and a good team oftentimes comes down to how it responds to adversity. Do they resign themselves to failure after tough losses, or do they learn and grow with their losses?

The No. 16 ranked Charles Page High School volleyball team (10-9, 0-4) has taken some tough losses this season, but thus far has refused to roll over - coming out strong time and time again against higher-ranked programs.

That competitive spirit showed up again in a 3-1 loss to No. 7 Owasso (15-8, 3-0) Thursday night at the Ed Dubie Field House.

“It was good volleyball and I’m just so proud of them for continuing to work hard even though it hasn’t necessarily shown up in the win column,” said head coach Skylar Jackson.

After losing the first set 25-22 the Sandites rallied from a 17-11 deficit in game two to win 25-22 before falling 25-18 and 25-14 against the Rams.

“Last year we played a really really great first match against Union and just couldn’t rebound,” said Jackson. “Even though we played so well, we got hung up on the fact that it’s a loss.”

“(This year) we played Booker T. early, we took them to five (sets), they’re one of the top 5A teams in the state. And I told the girls you have one of two options. We can either keep pushing forward or we can get hung up on the fact that we still lost and do what we did last year.”

“They haven’t gotten hung up on it. They work hard every day in practice and it’s starting to show. Taking sets from a top-ten Owasso is a good day.”

A very good day. In fact, the Sandites have only taken a set from Owasso twice since 2017 as the Rams have won the last eight meetings by a combined 22-2.

Sand Springs played a close opening set with four lead changes, six tie scores, and several strong rallies to stay in it. After falling behind 18-13, Adelynn Ray scored a kill and served two aces to close the gap to 18-16.

Owasso tried to pull away again, leading by as much as 23-19 before Averi Tippit and Jayden Smith scored back-to-back kills to keep it close. The Sandites won three of the final five rallies but couldn’t quite even the score before Madi Hill secured the Owasso victory.

In game two it looked like the Rams would run away with it, jumping out to leads of 5-1 and 17-11.

An Owasso service error gave the Sandites new life and Brooklyn Shope served a pair of aces to make it 17-14. Another Owasso service error kicked off a four-point streak with a pair of kills from Smith as the Sandites tied it up at 19-19.

Kiya Colvin scored a pair of kills as Owasso got back in front, 22-20, but yet another service error sparked the Sandites to win five-straight rallies for the victory.

Tippit and Alia DeBerry combined on a block, Evyn Morrow served an ace, and Shope and DeBerry scored kills to tie the match up.

“We’ve had that talk a lot, that when you’re down you’ve got to find another level to go to,” said Jackson. “So that’s something we’ve been talking about - being ready and working hard until October. They did that tonight.”

In game three, however, the Rams took an early lead and never relinquished it, though the Sandites made several late rallies. After trailing 15-7 midway through they cut it as close as 20-17 late in the match before Owasso won five of the final six rallies.

Owasso ran away with game four, winning eight rallies in a row for a 17-6 advantage that the Sandites couldn’t claw their way out of. After trailing 20-8 the girls cut it as close as 23-14 before a pair of errors put the match to bed.

An offensive adjustment for the Rams was the key difference as they ran a higher volume of their attacks through University of Oklahoma-commit Carley Butler in the final two sets. After scoring only two kills through the first two games, she scored eight in the final two.

Freshman phenom Madi Hill scored 14 kills to lead the Rams while Colvin added 11 to put three Rams in double-digits.

Sand Springs was led by Smith with 9 kills, Hannah McKelvey with 15 assists, Morrow with 23 digs, and Shope with 4 aces.

“I’m always impressed with Evyn Morrow,” said Jackson. “She just absolutely freaking kills it. Alia DeBerry - she hasn’t gotten a lot of playing time this season but she stepped out there on right side and had a really great blocking night.”

“All around, our servicing was great and our offense looked good. We were getting some good big blocks out there. I’m just proud of my team.”

The Sandites will return to action Tuesday at Bixby (4-15, 3-1) as they look for their first conference win of the season. The Spartans have won their past two meetings with Sand Springs.

Sandites Fall 61-7 to No. 1 Bixby

Every week, some poor soul has the task of trying to get his team to buy into the idea of toppling Bixby. Since 2018, only one team has managed the feat.

Seven of those coaches are district opponents. They have no choice but to suit up against the top-ranked Spartans. But three choose to play the five-time defending State Champions in non-district play, including Sand Springs head man Bobby Klinck.

“When they call me to schedule an appointment, I’m going to say yes,” said Klinck, following a 61-7 Spartan victory Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

“And it’s not going to get any easier next year when we play them and then we play Owasso as well. So let’s go. We’re not going to shy away. You want to play big boy football? You got to play big boys and that’s what we’re going to do around here.”

The Sandites actually kept things competitive for a while.

Last season the Sandites trailed 25-0 by the end of the first quarter - this time around it was only 14-0.

The home team went three-and-out on three of its first-quarter possessions. The fourth ended in an interception.

But they also got some key stops.

Bixby scored on its third offensive play, a 12-yard pass from Carson Kirby to Sam McCormick, but on the next Spartan drive Gatlin Gunn came up with an 18-yard interception.

Then the Spartans were forced into a rare three-and-out.

With less than a minute remaining in the quarter it was only 7-0 Bixby. By that same minute mark of their first two games the Spartans led Owasso and Springdale Har-Ber 21-0.

“After that first quarter it’s 14-0, we made a few plays, we got the pick, we stopped them,” said Klinck. “You could feel the stadium - the air kind of sucked out. And then they get a big-time football play.”

The big-time football play was an interception from Kordell Gouldsby to set up a hurry-up five-play 72-yard scoring drive. Clay Peters, the second head of the Spartans’ three-QB system, punched in a 15-yard run with 14 seconds left in the quarter.

Then the Spartan machine came roaring to life.

Gouldsby opened the second quarter with a 64-yard punt return for a touchdown. Jett Turner made a fourth-down sack in Sandite territory to set up a 5-yard scoring wildcat run by Cooper Parker. Turner made another fourth-down sack to set up a 33-yard TD run from Gouldsby.

Gouldsby ran in one more score on an 11-yard reception from Kirby to end the half 41-0. Still better than last year’s 53-0 halftime deficit, but a far cry from the “close game” it felt like just a half hour earlier.

“You’ve got to go make tackles,” said Klinck. “Number one (Gouldsby)’s an incredible football player, but we’ve got guys in position. You’ve got to go make plays.”

Sand Springs forced another three-and-out to open the second half and put together its most successful drive thus far, picking up three first-downs to knock on the gates of the Bixby red zone before starting quarterback Easton Webb took a late hit out of bounds and suffered what appeared to be a shoulder injury. He did not reenter the game.

“I think he’s going to be okay,” said Klinck. “We’re just going to evaluate him and make sure he’s okay, but we’ll see what happens.”

Webb ended the night 6-of-12 passing for 34 yards and one interception. Senior backup Jace Arnold took over and was 3-of-6 for 13 yards and two interceptions against the stingy Spartan secondary.

“It’s tough,” said Klinck. “I haven’t had him take any live snaps except for a wildcat and to go against a team like that - it’s tough. I thought he did a good job of just being calm and running the offense.”

Arnold’s first snap was a successful 9-yard screen to Ali McCoy, but his next was just in and out of the hands of Caleb Goodman for a turnover on downs.

Bixby responded with an 11-yard pass from Kirby to Garrett Vaughn to go up 48-0. Three plays later and Tyler Wright returned a 21-yard pick six. Then he returned a 41-yard pick six early in the fourth to go up 61-0.

McCoy averted the shutout on the next possession with a 37-yard touchdown run.

The vaunted one-two punch of McCoy and Kenneth Page was held to 109 yards on 25 carries just two weeks after combining for 316 yards in the Sandites’ season opener.

McCoy racked up 60 yards on 12 caries while Page had 49 yards on 13 carries.

Defensively the Sandites were led by Alex Dudley with 10 tackles, while Gunn and Owen Floyd had 7 apiece. The Sandites totaled two sacks and six tackles for loss on the evening.

Next week the Sandites will travel to Ponca City (0-2) in one of the Sandites’ longest-standing rivalries. The two teams have played in 45 consecutive seasons, with the Sandites leading the series 29-20-1. Ponca last beat the Sandites in 2019.

“I haven’t watched them yet,” said Klinck. “I know coach (Scott) Harmon always has a hard-nosed team and we’re going to have to get ready to play.”

Bixby will take a bye week before Norman North (2-0) takes on the tall task of trying to topple the Spartan giant. .
