Ava Watts and Kate Webb Sign College LOIs

The Charles Page High School girls’ soccer team had two seniors sign letters of intent to play at the collegiate level Wednesday morning at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Midfielder Ava Watts signed with Texas A&M at Commerce, an NCAA Division I program competing in the Southland Conference.

"Ava is a great athletic box-to-box midfielder from Tulsa SC ECNL with an extremely high engine,” said TAMU head coach Ashley Gordon. “She has great mentality on both sides of the ball. She is good with both feet, dominates in the air and scores goals."

Watts has been one of the most prolific scorers in school history, leading the team with 21 goals last season and 37 in her career.

The TAMU Lions went 9-7-3 overall last season and were 7-1-2 in their conference.

Defender and goalkeeper Kate Webb signed with University of the Ozarks, an NCAA Division III program in Clarkesville, Arkansas, competing in the American Southwest Conference.

The Eagles had their best record in over a decade at 8-8-1 last season to tie the record for most wins in school history. They also set a new program record with six shutouts.

Sandite Recruiting Report: Taiona Morris Commits to NEO

5’7” senior guard Taiona “Yonnie” Morris announced her commitment to play basketball at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Saturday afternoon on X.

“I (am) beyond blessed to say that I will be continuing my athletic & academic career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College,” tweeted Morris.

“None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for GOD, my loving family with their support & my parents who I am beyond grateful for for making the sacrifices they have to get me to all of my AAU practices, tournaments and etc. over the course of 5-6 years.”

“Just about 6 years ago, I had started playing the game of basketball. I would’ve never thought I’d make it this far knowing that I’ve picked up a ball late compared to everyone else. But if it wasn’t for Future Stars Athletics Training I wouldn’t be the player I am today, who’s accomplished so much talent over the past couple of years.”

NEO is an NJCAA program located in Miami. The Lady Norse have been a perennial power under 19th-season head coach Jim Rowland, who led the program to five consecutive Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference titles from from 2014 to 2018. NEO went 14-13 last season and is 1-3 this year.

Morris also received offers from Eastern Oklahoma State College and Coffeyville Community College. She is one of three Sandites courting college attention this season.

Senior lineman/TE Evan Williams (5’10”, 215 pounds) announced on X Friday that he has committed to play collegiate football at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas.

“I can’t wait to continue my academic and my athletic career at Bethel college,” tweeted Williams.

“I want to thank God for all he has done for me to have the opportunity to play at the next level.”

The Threshers compete in the NAIA and are led by first-year head coach A.B. Stokes. The Threshers have won back-to-back Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and are currently 6-4 in the current season.

Before being offered by Bethel, Williams also received offers to play at Kansas Wesleyan University, Hendrix College, Lyons College, and Oklahoma Wildcats Prep.

Lainey Stanfill leads Lady Sandites to 1-0 upset of Union

The 2022 Lady Sandite soccer season has been all about making history, and Tuesday’s 1-0 win against Union was no exception.

With under seven minutes left to play, freshman star Lainey Stanfill connected on her 20th goal of the season to knock off the perennial powerhouse RedHawks (10-5, 6-1) and lift the Sandites (11-4, 4-2) to a new program-best record.

“The Union game was something out of a movie,” said first-year head coach Cisco Chavez.

“Ava (Watts) took it from about half field, it bounced right in front of the keeper and went over. She tipped it out right to Lainey’s foot. Lainey put it in the net and the rest is history, kind of like our season. Just making history, historic moments, and we’re going to keep going.”

The game marked the first time this season the RedHawks have been shut out. Union has averaged more than four goals per game this year, led by University of Arkansas commit Makenzie Malham.

“Lockdown defense,” said Chavez. “We stopped the Gatorade Player of the Year from last year (Malham). They stuck to the assignment and they played well.”

The Sandites had an unfortunate end to the week in a 5-0 loss at Edmond North (11-1, 6-1) with a district title on the line. 

The day got off to a rocky start from the very beginning when the Sandites arrived late to the match due to a scheduling mixup. 

The teams had agreed three weeks prior to move the match up from 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to help the Huskies manage extensive Senior Night festivities between the girls’ and boys’ games. That change of schedule wasn’t documented on the Sandites’ end, however, and the girls had to go straight to action right off the bus.

To make matters worse, Katie Webb suffered a likely season-ending MCL sprain shortly into the first half, and the Sandites were on the receiving end of a 30 MPH headwind that made it nearly impossible to move the ball outside of their own box. 

“We haven’t had wind like this all year,” said Chavez. “First half, (Edmond North) came out, they put their chances away. Unfortunately, we couldn’t put it in the back of the net tonight, and that happens.”

The Huskies took a 4-0 lead into the half on goals by Ady Bechtel, Maddie Holub, Elle Schuppan, and Desi Abney. 

The Sandites played a far closer match in the second half but still only managed one shot on goal, with Leslie Miller recording the save. Julia McBride added the final goal of the night in the 52nd minute to put the match away.

Sophomore goalie Christina Thompson came away with seven saves in the contest.

“I’ll put this loss on me,” said Chavez. “This was mine for miscommunication with the other coaches. This loss was on me, not on the girls. We look forward to bouncing back and moving forward.”

Due to circular losses in a hotly contested district, the Sandites would have finished first with a win, but slipped to fourth with the loss. They will play the 6A-4 District Champions in the postseason, either Broken Arrow (10-1) or Owasso (14-0).

Sand Springs will wrap up the season Monday with a Senior Night district match against Putnam City (3-11, 0-6) at 6:00 p.m.

Boys

The Sandites (0-11, 0-6) fell by way of 10-0 mercy rule Tuesday against Union (10-5, 5-2) and lost 8-0 to Edmond North (9-3, 5-2) Friday night on the road. They will have one last shot at a win Monday at 8:00 p.m. when they host Putnam City (5-7, 2-3) on Senior Night. 

Layne Kirkendoll sets school long jump record, wins Frontier Valley Conference

The Sandite track teams had a successful week, competing at the Jenks Invitational last Monday and the Frontier Valley Conference meet on Saturday. The team won five first-place medals between the two meets, including three conference championships.

Junior star Layne Kirkendoll won the high jump and long jump at both events, and at the FVC meet she broke her own school record in long jump with a mark of 18 ft. 8 in. She has now won 12 events this season and is undefeated in long jump. Joseph Mattison won the 200-meter FVC title in 22.37 seconds and placed fourth at Jenks. 

The team will take a reduced roster to the Sapulpa meet on Friday, and some will take the week off to rest for the Regional meet Saturday, May 8th, also at Sapulpa.

Baseball

Sandite Baseball (11-18 overall, 5-9 district) split a district double-header with Putnam City Monday, April 19th, beating the Pirates 9-1 in game one before falling 4-3 in the sequel. 

Cason Savage hit a triple and a home run, scoring three runs and two RBI, and Keaton Campbell hit two doubles for two runs and two RBI in the first game. Jabe Schlehuber got the win on the mound, throwing nine strikeouts, no walks, and only one hit in five innings. 

Sand Springs out-hit the Pirates ten to six in game two, but stranded eight runners in the loss. The Sandites led 3-1 till the seventh inning when Putnam loaded the bases on two hits and a walk, and scored all three runners on an error.

They lost another close one 11-9 against Oologah on Thursday, leading 9-8 till the top of the seventh. Savage and Brooks Dudley were both 3-of-4 at the plate. 

The Sandites will host Guthrie Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Glenpool Friday at 6 p.m. 

Soccer

The varsity girls (7-5, 1-4) fell 1-0 to Bixby last Tuesday in an overtime shootout. The girls made it through regulation and both OT periods without giving up a goal, despite playing shorthanded after two players fouled out. Alyssa Perry and Katie Webb made their PKs, but the Spartans won the shootout.

The Sandite boys (7-4, 3-1) won their district match with Bixby 3-0 behind goals from Jack Bratcher, Fernando Saldana, and Cameron Summerton. 

The girls started their game against Booker T. Washington last Friday, but it was rained out before either team scored. That match will be made up Friday, with girls at 6 p.m. and boys at 8 p.m. The boys will also play a make-up match Thursday at Moore at 7 p.m.

Slow Pitch Softball

Raegan Rector and Jaden Jordan hit home runs, and Lauren Hammock hit a grand slam against Broken Arrow Thursday, but the No. 2 ranked Tigers rolled to a 20-11 win after scoring eight runs in the top of the seventh. No. 15 Sand Springs (7-15) will travel to No. 3 Moore Thursday for the Regional tournament, starting with Putnam City at 11 a.m.

Wrestling

Former two-time State Champion Sandite Riley Weir went 4-3 at the NJCAA National Championships for eighth place at 125 pounds. Weir is in his freshman year at Labette Community College.
