CPHS Softball: Sandites roll Lincoln Christian 11-1, lose to Coweta in extra inning

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (9-1) started its season on the best undefeated run in many years, but after beating Lincoln Christian 11-1 in the first game of the Rogers State University festival, they fell 5-4 to Coweta in an international tiebreaker Thursday afternoon.

Against Lincoln Christian (2-7) they needed only four innings to secure the win. Nataley Crawford (3-0, 6-2) got the start and win in the pitcher’s circle, throwing four hits, four strikeouts, and two walks in three innings. Raegan Rector made her season pitching debut with two strikeouts in relief.

The girls wasted no time in jumping out to a commanding lead, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Madison Lee capitalized on a walk with two stolen bases and scored the first run on an error. Rector and Jaden Jordan also drew walks and came in on a double from Aliyah Taff, who went on to score on a wild pitch. Drew Hawkins singled, Lauren Hammock walked, and Nately Crawford brought them both in on a single before the inning came to a close.

The Bulldogs put two runners on base in the second, but both were stranded after Crawford struck out the next three batters. Rector hit a double in the bottom of the inning, then scored on a triple from Taff. Taff scored on an error to make it 8-0.

Adyson Roberts hit a single in the third, took third on a double from Mackenzie Kelley, then stole home to avert the shutout, but Sand Springs went right back to scoring in the bottom of the inning. Lee scored on a single from Avery Tanner, who came in on a passed ball to make it 10-1. Lee finished the game off with an RBI single to score Lauren Hammock and the game ended mid-inning.

Roberts got the loss for the Bulldogs, throwing eight hits, four strikeouts, and eight walks in 3.1 innings.

The loss to Coweta was nearly a come-from-behind victory as the girls scored three runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-3 advantage. The Tigers forced extra innings, however, and won it in an international tiebreaker.

Lee and Jordan hit a pair of doubles in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead, but Kayley Lott doubled in Chaney Helton to tie it. The Sandites stranded seven runners over the next four innings and Coweta took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three singles and a pair of runs from Helton and Sherri Mason.

Lee kicked off a Sandite rally in the seventh with a single, then Tanner hit a double to put the team in scoring position. Rector hit a two-run double, then scored on a single from Jordan for the lead. Coweta wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and put together four singles with a run from Karley Mcnamee to force an extra inning.

In the tiebreaker inning, both teams started their at-bats with a runner on second. The Sandites failed to land a hit and left Kelsi Hilton stranded on third, while Holcomb tagged up on a line out from Denton to secure the win.

Taff (6-1, 23-15) took her first loss of the season with twelve hits, no walks, and seven strikeouts. Braedyn Sheofee got the win with ten hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

Sandite softball will look to kick off a new win streak Friday at 10:00 a.m. when they play Stillwater (6-2) in the first round of the Stillwater Festival. They will also play Deer Creek (4-2) at 12:00 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Sandites throttle Sapulpa 15-2, Kelsi Hilton hits home run

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (8-0, 2-0) continued its undefeated start to the season with a 15-2 trouncing of Highway 97 rival Sapulpa (0-3, 0-3) Tuesday afternoon on the road. The Chieftains led 2-1 after four innings, but the Sandites found their rhythm in the fifth and exploded to a dominant win. Sand Springs is one of only three undefeated teams left in Class 6A, and leads the class in wins.

Sand Springs recorded 24 hits in the district win, with a perfect five-for-five performance from sophomore Jaden Jordan. Raegan Rector was a perfect four-for-four, and freshman Kelsi Hilton hit her first high school home run.

The Sandites loaded the bases in the top of the first but Rector was called out for offensive interference, bringing the Chieftains to bat. Sierra Hughes hit an RBI double and Hailey Dye scored on a sacrifice. In the top of the second Drew Hawkins tagged up on a fly ball from Olivia Alexander to get the visitors on the board.

The teams went scoreless till the top of the fifth when Rector and Jordan singled, then both came home on a double from Aliyah Taff. Hilton hit an RBI single and scored on an error, then Madison Lee hit an RBI double to score Lauren Hammock for the 6-2 advantage.

Jordan hit an RBI triple in the sixth, followed by an RBI double from Taff. Taff scored on a ground out from Hilton to make it 9-2. Rector added a two-run double in the seventh, Jordan hit an RBI single, then Hilton smacked the three-run dinger over the center field fence for the final runs of the game.

Taff (6-0, 23-14) got the win in the pitcher’s circle with five hits, four walks, and ten strikeouts. Dye got the loss with 24 hits, four walks, and no strikeouts.

Sandite Softball will return to action Thursday at 1:30 p.m. when they take on Coweta (3-2) at the Rogers State University festival in Claremore. Sapulpa will travel to Owasso (5-1, 2-0) Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for a district match-up.

CPHS Softball: Sandites go undefeated at BA Tournament, beat Bristow 4-1

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team has been to the State Tournament five straight years, including a State Runner-Up performance in 2015, but none of those teams got off to as hot of a start as this year’s team. The Sandites are 7-0 after their first week, their best opening run since at least 2012.

Four of those wins came in this weekend’s Broken Arrow Tournament. Broken Arrow’s Arrowhead Park was too wet to play at so the girls got to host their pool of competitors, and defeated Silo, Mustang, Edmond North, and Bristow to remain perfect on the season. Moore, Southmoore, and Coweta won the other pools, but there was no bracketed placement round.

Senior pitcher Aliyah Taff (5-0, 22-14) got the win against Bristow Saturday night, throwing two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts in six innings.

Nataley Crawford got the Sandites on the board with a two-run double to score Makenzie Burks and Drew Hawkins in the bottom of the second. Abby Morgan scored Bristow’s only run on an error in the fourth, but the Sandites responded by loading the bases in the fifth. Taff and Jaden Jordan hit RBI singles to score Madison Lee and Avery Tanner for the final runs of the game.

The Sandites managed eight hits with three walks but stranded seven runners and committed two errors. McKenna Ingram got the loss in the pitcher’s circle with four strikeouts and three walks.

Sandite softball will look to continue their hot streak Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Sapulpa (0-2) for a district rivalry game.

CPHS Volleyball: Sand Springs beats NOAH, goes 5-2 at home tournament

IMG_1425.JPG

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (5-3) wasn’t able to defend its home tournament title after graduating seven players from last year’s unit, but the young team was still able to post a 5-2 record for third place in the round-robin event. Bixby won the tournament, and Bishop Kelley JV came in second.

The Sandites won matches against Lawton, Sapulpa, Tecumseh, Edison, and Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschools (NOAH), but lost to the top two teams. They beat NOAH 2-0 in the final match Saturday afternoon with sets of 25-22 and 25-20.

Both games against NOAH were fairly close. The Jaguars had the talent to compete with Sand Springs, doubling the Sandites in kills. They didn’t have the discipline, however, nearly doubling the home team in errors.

Sand Springs led for most of the first set, but it was always fairly close. In game two it looked like they might run away with it, taking a 17-6 lead before the Jaguars won six straight rallies to keep it competitive.

The Sandites needed only 11 kills to win the match, thanks to 30 errors from the Jaguars. Layla Lenex led the Sandites with four kills and two assisted blocks, while Jacelyn Smith scored three aces, a kill, and two assisted blocks.

Sandite volleyball will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference home match against Broken Arrow (3-2, 1-0).
