CPHS Volleyball: Broken Arrow sweeps Sandites 3-0

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (5-4, 0-2) is still looking for its first win in the Frontier Valley Conference after dropping a 3-0 decision to Broken Arrow Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House. The Tigers (5-2, 2-0) won sets of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-20.

The first two sets were runaway victories for the visiting Tigers, who jumped out to an 8-0 lead in game one. The Sandites committed fourteen errors in the set and only recorded five offensive scores. Jacelyn Smith served up a pair of aces at 8-4, Madison Blaylock had one ace, and Sophie Singleton and Allie Wright had a kill apiece.

Payton Robbins scored the opening kill of set two, but the Tigers won seven straight rallies and never looked back. Singleton, Jentry Hughes, and Kasidy Holland scored kills and Olivia Dewitt served an ace.

Sand Springs tried to get back into contention in game three and gave their guests a run for their money. Hughes served an ace to start the set, then scored a kill for the 4-2 lead. Mackenzie McGuire scored two aces and a kill for the 9-5 tiger advantage and Sand Springs never took the lead again, but they did come close to tying it at 20-19 when Smith and Robbins hit back to back kills. Hughes posted a block at 22-20, but Broken Arrow finished strong and Callie Mullins served an ace for the win.

Broken Arrow will take a week off before traveling to Booker T. Washington (0-0) Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Sand Springs will play at the Holland Hall Tournament this Friday, with matches at 10:30 a.m. against Okay (2-2), 12:00 p.m. against Holland Hall (5-2), and 3:00 p.m. against Cascia Hall (5-2).

CPHS Football: Only 650 tickets available for season-opener in Sapulpa

The Charles Page High School football season will kick off Friday, August 28th with a non-district rivalry road game against Sapulpa. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sapulpa School District will be limiting attendance to half-capacity, or 650 fans on the visitors’ side of the stadium.

Advance tickets will be available at the Ed Dubie Field House from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

On Monday ticket sales will be limited to parents of senior football players, dance, and cheer team members, with a limit of four tickets per athlete. High school seniors will also be able to purchase one ticket, and will be required to show a student ID.

On Tuesday ticket sales will be extended to parents of junior football players, dance, and cheer team members, with a limit of four tickets per athlete. High school juniors will also be able to purchase one ticket, and must show student ID.

On Wednesday tickets will be extended to parents of sophomore football players, dance, and cheer team members with a limit of four tickets per athlete. High school sophomores will also be able to purchase up to one ticket, and must show student ID. The general public will also be able to purchase tickets during this window.

The Sandites are in their first season under Head Coach Bobby Klinck, who inherits a program that went 5-15 over the last two seasons and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2017. Klinck holds a 13-12 head coaching record from East Central High School in Tulsa, and most recently was the Defensive Coordinator at Owasso High School, where he helped the Rams to two State Championships.

CPHS Softball: Sandites go undefeated at BA Tournament, beat Bristow 4-1

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team has been to the State Tournament five straight years, including a State Runner-Up performance in 2015, but none of those teams got off to as hot of a start as this year’s team. The Sandites are 7-0 after their first week, their best opening run since at least 2012. 

Four of those wins came in this weekend’s Broken Arrow Tournament. Broken Arrow’s Arrowhead Park was too wet to play at so the girls got to host their pool of competitors, and defeated Silo, Mustang, Edmond North, and Bristow to remain perfect on the season. Moore, Southmoore, and Coweta won the other pools, but there was no bracketed placement round.

Senior pitcher Aliyah Taff (5-0, 22-14) got the win against Bristow Saturday night, throwing two hits, one walk, and four strikeouts in six innings. 

Nataley Crawford got the Sandites on the board with a two-run double to score Makenzie Burks and Drew Hawkins in the bottom of the second. Abby Morgan scored Bristow’s only run on an error in the fourth, but the Sandites responded by loading the bases in the fifth. Taff and Jaden Jordan hit RBI singles to score Madison Lee and Avery Tanner for the final runs of the game.

The Sandites managed eight hits with three walks but stranded seven runners and committed two errors. McKenna Ingram got the loss in the pitcher’s circle with four strikeouts and three walks.

Sandite softball will look to continue their hot streak Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. when they travel to Sapulpa (0-2) for a district rivalry game.

CPHS Volleyball: Sand Springs beats NOAH, goes 5-2 at home tournament

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (5-3) wasn’t able to defend its home tournament title after graduating seven players from last year’s unit, but the young team was still able to post a 5-2 record for third place in the round-robin event. Bixby won the tournament, and Bishop Kelley JV came in second.

The Sandites won matches against Lawton, Sapulpa, Tecumseh, Edison, and Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschools (NOAH), but lost to the top two teams. They beat NOAH 2-0 in the final match Saturday afternoon with sets of 25-22 and 25-20.

Both games against NOAH were fairly close. The Jaguars had the talent to compete with Sand Springs, doubling the Sandites in kills. They didn’t have the discipline, however, nearly doubling the home team in errors.

Sand Springs led for most of the first set, but it was always fairly close. In game two it looked like they might run away with it, taking a 17-6 lead before the Jaguars won six straight rallies to keep it competitive.

The Sandites needed only 11 kills to win the match, thanks to 30 errors from the Jaguars. Layla Lenex led the Sandites with four kills and two assisted blocks, while Jacelyn Smith scored three aces, a kill, and two assisted blocks.

Sandite volleyball will return to action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference home match against Broken Arrow (3-2, 1-0).

CPHS Softball: Sandites improve to 6-0 with wins over Silo, Mustang, Edmond North

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (6-0) continued its undefeated start to the season with a trio of tournament wins over Silo (3-2), Mustang (2-2), and Edmond North (2-7) this weekend at the Sandite Softball Complex. The games were part of the Broken Arrow Tournament, but were relocated to Sand Springs due to soggy fields at Arrowhead Park. 

The Sandites jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first Friday against Silo as Jaden Jordan hit her second home run of the season. Nobody scored again till the bottom of the fourth when the Rebels went off with three singles and a pair of sacrifices to take a 3-2 lead. 

Sand Springs tied it up in the top of the sixth with a run from Madison Lee and the game went into extra innings at 3-3. Because it was a tournament, the game went to international tie breaker in the eighth inning, and each team started their at-bats with a runner on second. 

Silo was in prime position after striking out the first two Sandites, but Raegan Rector drew a walk and Jordan and Aliyah Taff hit RBI singles for the 5-3 lead. Gracie Lawless scored Silo’s final run of the game on an error.

Taff (4-0, 21-14) got the win in the circle with seven hits and three strikeouts, while Christina Clark got the loss with six hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. 

The game against Mustang was another close one at 3-2 on Friday. Cassie Passwaters hit a solo home run for the Broncos in the top of the first. Lee scored on an error to tie it, Rector scored on a passed ball, and Avery Tanner  batted in Jordan with an RBI single to make it 3-1. Passwaters batted in another run on a sacrifice in the sixth, but that would be the final score of the game. 

Nataley Crawford (2-0, 5-2) got the win with three hits, two strikeouts, and two walks. Kiera McGahee took the loss with four hits, two strikeouts, and two walks.

On Saturday the Sandites got their first shutout of the year 7-0 against Edmond North behind a two-hit, no-walk, five-strikeout pitching performance from Taff. Drew Hawkins was two-for-two at the plate with two runs, two RBI, and a double.

Sand Springs piled on five runs in the top of the first with singles from Lee and Rector, and doubles from Taff, Hawkins, and Olivia Alexander. In the top of the sixth Alexander had another double to score Tanner, and Hawkins scored on a ground hit from Crawford. Morgan Thomas took the loss for the Huskies with six hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.

Sandite softball will return to action Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. against Bristow (3-1) in the final game of the tournament.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites sweep Edison 2-0, lose to Bishop Kelley Red

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (4-3) lost Tehya Johnson to an ankle injury on Friday, but still managed a 2-0 sweep of Edison Prep (2-4) Saturday morning at the Ed Dubie Field House. They lost their second match 2-0 to Bishop Kelley Red, however. The Sandites are now 4-2 in their round-robin home tournament with one match left.

Madison Fowler and Jacelyn Smith scored a pair of kills to start the match against Edison and Allie Wright served an ace to make it 4-0 before the Eagles got on the board. Smith scored five kills and two aces in the set and the Sandites never trailed in the 25-11 win.

Edison won the opening rally of round two on a Sandite error, but two more aces from Smith and a kill from Layla Lenex made it 4-1 and the home team only relinquished their lead once at 5-5. Jentry Hughes had a pair of aces to make it 9-5 and the Sandites soon began to run away with it. Payton Robbins got hot late in the set with three straight kills, and Smith secured the victory at 25-14.

Smith led all scorers with eight kills and four aces, followed by Robbins with five kills. Madison Blaylock had a team-high 13 digs, and Wright had a team-high ten assists. Sand Springs committed 13 errors while the Eagles had 18.

In the match against the Comets, Sand Springs was competitive through the first set but was ultimately derailed by 12 errors in the 25-17 loss. Robbins was on fire early in the round, earning four of the Sandites’ first five points, but the home team had its last lead at 5-4. The second game was fairly lopsided as the Sandites committed ten errors with only two kills and never led in the 25-12 defeat. Robbins had a team-high five kills and one ace in the loss, while Smith had four kills.

Sand Springs will return to action at 2:00 p.m. against Northeast Oklahoma Association of Homeschoools (NOAH) in the final round of the tournament.
