CPHS Football: Sandites head to Shawnee for first time in 21 years

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-2) will kick off district action at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Shawnee against the No. 15 Wolves (0-3). The last time the two teams met, none of the current players were born yet. While the Sandites are hoping to get back to an even record in their third-straight road game, their hosts are simply hoping to snap a four-game losing streak.

Last Week

Sand Springs traveled to Greenwood, Arkansas (2-1) to take on the defending 6A State Champions, and they more than met their match. The Bulldogs prevailed 49-13 with a first-string 42-0 shutout. Caden Pennington was held to a 12-21-45-0 passing performance, but he led the ground game with fifteen carries for 95 yards and a score.

Shawnee was the 25th-straight victim of the defending 5A State Champions from Carl Albert (3-0), falling 47-7 on the road. The Wolves scored their lone touchdown in the first quarter and gave up 33 unanswered points. Heath Hunter passed for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Sandites started out with a 41-28 loss to Mansfield Summit, TX (1-2) and rebounded with a 45-24 victory at No. 13 Putnam City (0-3). Shawnee lost 35-34 to Choctaw (2-1) and 42-7 to Guthrie (3-0).

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 61-62 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Shawnee is coming off a 7-4 season at the 5A level. Head Coach Billy Brown is in his fifteenth season with a 90-71 record and back-to-back playoff appearances. The Wolves won the 5A State title in 2003 and the 3A title in 1973.

The Series (Sand Springs 5-1)

10/30/1992 - The first ever meeting between the two teams went to Shawnee. The Wolves (6-3) earned a 6A playoff berth with a 21-14 home victory over L.D. Baines’s Sandites (3-6). Mike Quimby scored on a one-yard keeper and on a fourteen-yard pass to Aaron Fugate.

10/29/1993 - Sand Springs (6-3) won a 14-0 shutout over Shawnee (2-7) in district action, led by Delvin Jordan with 130 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. The stifling Sandite defense surrendered only seventy yards of total offense.

11/4/1994 - Sand Springs (4-6) ended the season on a high note with an 18-6 victory, led by Jordan at QB.

11/3/1995 - Dustin Morrow passed 12-16-130 for a touchdown to lead the Sandites (6-4) past Shawnee (2-8) in the regular season finale. Walker Childers carried seventeen times for 96 yards and a score and the Sandites prevailed 20-7.

9/27/1996 - Marc Brown carried for 116 yards to lead the Sandites (4-0) in a 36-0 shutout at Shawnee.

9/26/1997 - Sand Springs (4-0) rolled the Wolves 35-0 thanks to a four-touchdown performance by Pedro Negron. The Sandites ran 33-251 in a mostly grounded attack, recovered four Shawnee fumbles, and blocked a field goal attempt.

CPHS Football: Sandites fall 49-13 to defending Arkansas State Champs

Senior QB Caden Pennington racked up career yardage on the ground Friday night in Greenwood, Arkansas.

The Charles Page High School varsity football team (1-2) bit off more than they could chew Friday night in Greenwood, Arkansas, falling to the defending Class 6A State Champions (2-1), a team that has only lost three games in the past four seasons.

Senior quarterback Caden Pennington was held to a season low 45 passing yards after averaging over 180 in the first two games. He made up for it on the ground, however, running up a career-high of 95 yards with his second career touchdown. Joel Mackey contributed 82 yards and a score on the ground, while Trey Wilkerson had fifty.

The Bulldogs scored on the first offensive play of the game with senior quarterback Peyton Holt running it fourteen yards after Max Vickery recovered a fumbled kickoff return.

Greenwood’s special teams continued to shine with Luke Leonard returning a punt for a 57 yard touchdown after the Sandites were held to a quick three-and-out. Less than three minutes into the game and they led 14-0 with two extra points from kicker Grant Ennis.

The Sandite offense managed a slow and steady eleven-play sixty-yard march to the Bulldog redzone. After taking a six yard sack, Pennington tried to make up for it with a double-reverse endzone pass that was dropped by the receiver. A false start and two pass breakups later and the Bulldogs got the ball back for a score.

Greenwood catapulted 67 yards in three plays, highlighted by a 54-yard keeper. Marc Jones took a handoff from two yards out and Ennis made it 21-0. They scored again on the opening play of the second quarter with an eighteen yard pass from Holt to Leonard.

Holt found Treyton Dawson from 31 yards out and Dawson broke two tackles for the 35-0 lead. Sand Springs marched 65 yards in thirteen plays, including a fourth down conversion, but turned the ball over with an incomplete pass at the Greenwood fifteen.

The Bulldogs scored on the opening possession of the second half when Holt made the most of a broken play and ran it in from ten. With a 42-0 lead, the Dogs finally sent in the second string.

The Sandites scored on an eighty-yard drive with a twenty-yard run from Mackey. Jaden Weiser’s kick missed, but the Sandites had averted the shutout.

Second-string quarterback Jace Presley led the Bulldogs in a 66-yard scoring march capped by an eighteen yard Aydin Chatfield touchdown run and Jackson Stewart kicked the extra point shortly before the end of the third quarter.

Sand Springs struck again to start the fourth quarter off. They traveled seventy yards in twelve plays before Pennington scrambled in from ten yards out after the pass play fell apart. This time Weiser’s PAT rang true for the final point of the game.

Timothy Earnhardt took over at quarterback and brought his team to the Sandites’ six before taking a knee to end the game.

Sand Springs will travel to Shawnee (0-3) next Friday at 7:00 p.m. to kick off district action.

CPHS Softball: Luttrell hits home run in 5-2 loss to Broken Arrow

The Sand Springs and Broken Arrow high school softball teams came into Tuesday evening’s matchup with undefeated district records, and the battle lived up to the hype. The Tigers came from behind for a 5-2 seventh-inning victory, scoring five runs on three errors.

Cowley County Community College-committed senior Elizabeth Luttrell hit her second home run of the season and eighth of her career in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jacie Taber reached on an error in the sixth and scored on a single from Aliyah Taff for the 2-0 Sandite lead.

The seventh inning spelled disaster for the Sandites, who gave up three straight singles to load the bases. Three errors and five runs later and Raegan Edwards grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to bring the Sandites in to bat.

The Sandites picked up a pair of walks, but the Tigers had a double-play of their own in store to bring the game to a close.

Madelyn Blair (7-1, 26-6) pitched the first four innings, throwing four hits and one walk. Taff (4-3, 4-5) got the loss with four hits, three strikeouts, and no walks in three innings.

Sand Springs Softball (16-5, 6-1) will return to action Tuesday with a district home game against Stillwater (14-5, 4-2) at 5:00 p.m. They will get a rematch with Broken Arrow (25-3, 6-0) Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

CPHS Softball: Sandites win seventh straight, top Ponca City 11-1 on Senior Night

The Charles Page High School varsity softball team (16-4, 6-0) made quick work of Ponca City (17-9, 2-5) Tuesday evening on Senior Night. The Sandites won their seventh-straight game 11-1 to remain undefeated in district action.

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma-committed senior Madelyn Blair (7-1, 26-6) got the start and the win on the mound, throwing no hits, no runs, no walks, and four strikeouts in four innings. Mackenzie Bechtold (3-0) gave up two hits and one run in the fifth and final inning.

Sabrina Usher hit her fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the first, and Makenna Skaggs hit the first home run of her career in the third. Felicity Horn scored on a ground out by Blair, Kimi Presnell doubled in Cameron Clemons, and Skaggs’s homer brought in Presnell for a 5-0 lead.

Ponca averted the shutout in the top of the fifth with an RBI single from Tally Goddard to score Mackenzie Laughlin, but the Sandites piled on six more runs for the run-rule victory.

Jacie Taber hit an RBI double to score Usher, then scored on a double from Horn. Horn scored on a single from Blair, Clemons scored on a ground ball from Elizabeth Luttrell, and Skaggs hit a 2RBI single to score Blair and Presnell.

The Sandites currently lead their district with a 6-0 record, winning all six of those games by a ten-run margin. They have four district games left, two of which will go against Broken Arrow (23-3-2, 5-0).

The Lady Tigers are riding an eight-game win streak, or sixteen-straight if you ignore two tie games at an out-of-state tournament. The two top dogs will meet Thursday at 5:00 p.m. on the Sandites’ home turf.

CPHS Volleyball: Sandites upset No. 16 Union in 3-0 sweep

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (5-12) rolled to a 3-0 upset of No. 16 ranked Union (9-10) Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Devree Youngblood struck first with an assist from Madison Burris, but the visitors soon ran away with a six-point streak. The Sandites played catch up from there and used a seven-rally stretch to take a 15-11 lead that they never relinquished. Burris recorded two kills, seven assists, and an ace, while Youngblood scored seven kills. The Sandites outkilled the Redskins 14-10 in the stanza and six made their way into the scorebook.

Raylynn Mong kicked the second game off in style with an assist and an ace. The Redskins tied it up nine times but only led twice, both times in the final stretch. Trailing 20-18, Union used a kill from Katie Marth and a pair of aces from Sydney West for their first lead. A hitting error from Marth tied it back up, Tierney Jackson scored a kill for the Union lead, then the Sandites ran away with it. Union made three straight errors and Youngblood scored a kill to secure the victory.

Cheyenne Henry scored the first kill of the final set and Cloe Campfield aced for a 3-0 lead. They held the lead till 11-9, then Union rattled off seven-straight points with five kills before committing three-straight errors to let the Sandites back in the game. Vanessa Wyrick notched a kill and two more errors tied it up at 17-17, then Mia Marth scored a kill and Ashlynn Cunningham served back to back aces.

Down 22-19, the Sandites went on a five-point run with an ace from Madison Blaylock and a kill from Campfield. Union wouldn’t go down without a fight. Mia Marth made another kill and Abby Thompson scored a kill and an ace for a 25-24 lead. Campfield tied it up, an error gave the Sandites the lead, and Henry scored a kill for the win.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday, September 18th with at 6:15 p.m. conference road game at No. 9 Owasso (15-5). The two teams have yet to meet this season, but the Sandites won two sweeps last year.

CPHS Softball: Sandites shut out Putnam City North 10-0, twice

Strong performances from a youthful bullpen propelled the Sandites to a pair of 10-0 run-rule victories over Putnam City North High School (4-17, 0-4) Monday evening in Sand Springs. Junior Mackenzie Bechtold pitched a five-inning no-hitter in game one and sophomore Aliyah Taff threw a one-hitter in game two, which only lasted three innings.

Charles Page (15-4, 5-0) currently leads the district, but has to get past Broken Arrow (23-3, 5-0) on Thursday to take full control of the standings. They will also host Ponca City (17-8, 2-4) for Senior Night Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. They defeated the Wildcats 11-0 last week.

Jacie Taber scored Kimi Presnell and Makenna Skaggs on a hard ground ball in the bottom of the first, then Presnell doubled in Madelyn Blair in the second inning. Skaggs sacrificed to score Elizabeth Luttrell and Presnell scored on a wild pitch for a 5-0 lead.

Presnell hit her third home run of the season to score Luttrell in the fourth, Skaggs scored on a passed ball, and Taber stole home to make it 9-0. Drew Hawkins scored on a double from Luttrell to secure the victory.

Bechtold (3-0) had a career-best performance with six strikeouts and no walks. Taff (4-2, 4-4) threw one hit, three strikeouts, and one walk in game two.

Skaggs scored Presnell on a single and came in on a single from Felicity Horn, then Reagan Rector walked in on loaded bases for a 3-0 first inning lead. Jenson Arnold and Taber scored Luttrell and Skaggs on singles in the second.

An error and two walks loaded the bases in the third. Skaggs doubled in Cameron Clemons and Luttrell, then Sabrina Usher tripled to score Presnell and Skaggs. Arnold scored Usher on a single for the 10-0 lead. Taff struck out two in the final inning to secure the win.
