CPHS Volleyball: Sandites upset No. 16 Union in 3-0 sweep

The Charles Page High School varsity volleyball team (5-12) rolled to a 3-0 upset of No. 16 ranked Union (9-10) Tuesday evening at the Ed Dubie Field House.

Devree Youngblood struck first with an assist from Madison Burris, but the visitors soon ran away with a six-point streak. The Sandites played catch up from there and used a seven-rally stretch to take a 15-11 lead that they never relinquished. Burris recorded two kills, seven assists, and an ace, while Youngblood scored seven kills. The Sandites outkilled the Redskins 14-10 in the stanza and six made their way into the scorebook.

Raylynn Mong kicked the second game off in style with an assist and an ace. The Redskins tied it up nine times but only led twice, both times in the final stretch. Trailing 20-18, Union used a kill from Katie Marth and a pair of aces from Sydney West for their first lead. A hitting error from Marth tied it back up, Tierney Jackson scored a kill for the Union lead, then the Sandites ran away with it. Union made three straight errors and Youngblood scored a kill to secure the victory.

Cheyenne Henry scored the first kill of the final set and Cloe Campfield aced for a 3-0 lead. They held the lead till 11-9, then Union rattled off seven-straight points with five kills before committing three-straight errors to let the Sandites back in the game. Vanessa Wyrick notched a kill and two more errors tied it up at 17-17, then Mia Marth scored a kill and Ashlynn Cunningham served back to back aces.

Down 22-19, the Sandites went on a five-point run with an ace from Madison Blaylock and a kill from Campfield. Union wouldn’t go down without a fight. Mia Marth made another kill and Abby Thompson scored a kill and an ace for a 25-24 lead. Campfield tied it up, an error gave the Sandites the lead, and Henry scored a kill for the win.

Sand Springs will return to action Tuesday, September 18th with at 6:15 p.m. conference road game at No. 9 Owasso (15-5). The two teams have yet to meet this season, but the Sandites won two sweeps last year.
