Sandite of the Week: Edgar Soberano

This week Sandite Pride would like to recognize Charles Page High School sophomore Edgar Soberano as Sandite of the Week for his continual impressive goal keeping for the varsity soccer team.

While Sandite Pride hasn't tracked saves this season, there's no disputing that if we had a number, it would be impressive. He blocked multiple shots in an overtime win over Sapulpa last Tuesday, and was incredible in a game against a nationally ranked team from Edmond.

The Deer Creek Antlers were ranked No.18 in the Nation when they hammered the Sandites 7-0. Despite the large amount of goals, were it not for Soberano's quick wits and desperate dives, it would have been a mercy ruling in no time. The Antlers got off thirteen shots in the first twenty minutes of the game, with seven resulting in impressive saves by Soberano.

Sandite of the Week: Jessica Schuler

This week Sandite Pride would like to recognize Charles Page High School senior Jessica Schuler for her consistent outstanding performances at all three slow pitch softball games last week. Schuler is the second-highest scorer on the team with 25 runs and 34 RBI this season and is the leading home-run hitter with 13 this season. She has the highest slugging average at 1.644 and is the only Lady Sandite to hit a grand slam this season.

This past week has been particularly notable for Schuler, who is signed to play for Northeastern State University this fall. In a Tuesday evening game against 2A No.3 ranked Barnsdall (23-4) the No.14 Lady Sandites (10-5) scored a 13-8 upset win with Schuler (6-2) on the mound. 

The Lady Panthers led 4-3 in the bottom of the third when Schuler scored a go-ahead 2RBI homer. Barnsdall had tied it back up at 8-8 in the top of the fifth, but once more it was Schuler to the rescue with a grand slam to make it 12-8. Schuler pitched all seven innings and gave up 12 hits, 1 walk, and 8 earned runs with 1 strike out while throwing 43% strikes. 

On Thursday evening the Sandites had a close double-header rivalry match-up at Sapulpa. In the first game Schuler only got off a single on four at-bats, but she was instrumental in the second game.

Once more Schuler was on the mound, giving up just two earned runs and twelve hits over eight innings while throwing 73% strikes. Schuler got a base hit in the top of the second and courtesy runner Jensen Arnold scored the go-ahead on a Jacie Taber sacrifice. The Chieftains retook the lead in the bottom of the third, but in the top of the fourth Schuler hit a home run to tie it back up. Sapulpa battled back to a 6-6 tie by the top of the fifth and it held through extra innings till Sydney Pennington scored Kimi Presnell, then came home on a single by Schuler to ice the cake. 

The Sandites have just two game-days left in the regular season and will play next at Bixby (5-14) on Tuesday.

Sandite of the Week: Ethan Baxter

This week Sandite Pride would like to recognize Charles Page High School freshman Ethan Baxter as Sandite of the Week for his outstanding performance at the Tulsa Edison Green and White Tournament this past weekend.

Baxter leads his team in scoring this season with four goals, three of them coming in a single game this weekend. His hat trick led his team to a 4-1 victory over Regent Prep to snap a five-game losing streak. 

He scored his first goal of the season in a 4-0 shutout of Muskogee in the opening week. He scored his first goal of the Regent game on a header less than 8 minutes into the game, then added his second exactly 4 minutes later. 

The Sandites are now 2-7 for the season and came in 6th of 8 teams in the Edison Tournament.

Sandite of the Week: Rhett Rutledge

This week Sandite Pride recognizes Charles Page High School senior Rhett Rutledge as Sandite of the Week for his outstanding performance at the Bixby Tournament this past weekend. 

Rutledge averaged .267 batting, .467 slugging, with a .368 OBP, and made his season pitching debut with a Championship round victory over the host team. 

The Sandites (12-3) won their fifth straight in the tournament opener 8-5 against Hilldale (6-9). Rutledge landed the first hit of the game with a triple and came in on the next play with a sacrifice fly from Jake Ward for the first run. He was walked on his next plate appearance and scored once more on a Hunter Greathouse double. He reached first on an error in the bottom of the sixth and scored his third run of the game on a Greathouse single. 

Their sixth straight victory was a come-from-behind extra-inning win over Union. Rutledge landed one hit in the top of the fifth and stole second on a passed ball, but was left stranded. The Sandites won that one 7-6 in eight innings. 

He failed to land a hit in the next two games (a 4-1 loss to Bixby and an 8-0 run-rule shut out of Life Prep Academy), but batted .667 in the finale and won the game on the mound. He struck out one in the first and gave up an unearned double. He grounded out on a sacrifice to score Jake Terry for a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. 

He scooped a grounder to put out a batter at first in the bottom of the second and struck out another for a no-hitter. He sacrificed again to score Treyce Tolbert in the top of the third, but gave up a run in the bottom of the inning. 

He pitched a no-hitter in the fifth, striking out one and putting out another at first on a grounder. He hit a leadoff line drive single in the top of the sixth and was batted in by Josh Taber. By the bottom of the sixth the Spartans were pushing hard for a rally and loaded the bases. Rutledge gave up one single, two runs, one earned run, and two walks before being relieved by Brock Youngblood. The Sandites went on to win the game 10-6 for the tournament championship.

Sandite of the Week: Hunter Greathouse

This week Sandite Pride would like to recognize Charles Page High School junior Hunter Greathouse as Sandite of the Week for his consistent outstanding performances in all five games at the Best of the West baseball tournament in Phoenix, Arizona over Spring Break.

Greathouse averaged .500 batting and slugging with a .467 OBP, as well as pitched his first win of the season in the tournament finale against Coconino. 

The Sandites (6-2) won their fourth straight in the tournament opener 3-1 against the Greenway High Demons (8-2). Greathouse hit a single in the top of the fifth as the teams were tied up 1-1, but was left stranded. In the seventh, however, he was walked, and scored the final run of the game on a Josh Taber single.

In the first loss of the season, Greathouse singled in the third period against Sunrise Mountain (10-5-1), but was stranded as the Peoria, Arizona team went on to a 7-0 shutout. 

In the third game of the series, the Sandites were pitted against Chaparral High (12-2) of Scottsdale, Arizona. Greathouse flied out his first two at bats, but hit a single in the top of the sixth. He was replaced with courtesy runner Kameron Adcock, who was left stranded as Jake Terry struck out. The Firebirds won that game 2-1. 

Sand Springs got back on track in the next round with a 14-2 run-rule over Scottsdale's Notre Dam Prep (7-8). Greathouse got on base twice, each time with singles, each time being batted in on doubles from Trevor Tolbert. 

In the final game the Sandites took on Coconino (2-11) from Flagstaff, Arizona. Greathouse went to the mound for the second time this season, his first time as the starter, and threw 58% strikes, giving up only three hits and striking out nine batters over six innings. He struck out two in the first inning, giving up one walk that scored. He struck out three more over the next two innings, but walked in two runners on loaded bases in the top of the fourth and Coconino took a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning he hit a single and courtesy runner Tyler McCallie went on to score. He singled to load the bases in the bottom of the fifth and once more McCallie scored in his stead. He struck out the side in order in the top of the sixth then scored Rhett Rutledge on a sacrifice for a final score of 8-3. 

In addition to being a stud on the diamond, he's also the starting quarterback on the State Runner-Up football team where he threw 99-185-8-1767 for 18 touchdowns, as well as 5 rushing touchdowns.

Sandite of the Week: Trevor Tolbert

This week Sandite Pride would like to recognize Charles Page High School senior Trevor Tolbert as Sandite of the Week for his outstanding performance against Booker T Washington last week at OneOK field.

Tolbert is signed with Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma, and is the son of Jason and Deena Tolbert. His cousin, Treyce, also plays for Sandite baseball.

Tolbert, who currently owns a .250 batting average for the season, batted two-for-two last Monday for two RBIs off a single and a triple and scored one run. He sits at a .500 slugging average and a .454 OBP with five putouts and five assists for the season.

The Sandites have won their first four games by a combined score of 22-5, including a 3-1 upset of Greenway High who run-ruled them twice in a double-header last season.
